MOD NOTE: TROPES BLANKET-BANNED FROM HAVING VIDEO EXAMPLES:

It's been discussed a lot at the Video Uploading thread that a lot of poor videos are slipping through the cracks, and that a clean-up effort is necessary if we are to combat the problem.

Common issues are:

  • Videos spoiling major events from a work
  • Videos not actually fitting the trope they're attached to
  • Videos in which the important part doesn't happen until halfway through, with the length being ultimately pointless
  • Videos that use the entire work, breaking copyright; this can be done either with one video showcasing an entire short video, or multiple videos that add up to using the entire work in piecemeal.
  • Videos lacking the proper media source, or any media source at all.
  • General quality problems, like audio issues or artifacting.

So, we've got our work cut out for us; but this is at least a place to discuss problems and come to solutions.

[up][up] (re:blocking functionality) We just submitted a video to Epileptic Flashing Lights with no apparent obstacle. It's possible it's being silently blocked, though.

On the flashing lights issue, is it possible to consider Blinking Lights of Victory a candidate for no videos as well? The trope description states that flashing lights such as strobe lights are allowed to count if the context is relevant.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

[up] Blinking lights in game shows usually don't reach the rapid levels required for Epileptic Flashing Lights. They're usually dimmer and/or less choppy.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Insurmountable Waist-High Fence has two different videos from the same The Nostalgia Critic scene. One of them uses the media source to list it as an example of Insufficiently Advanced Alien, so maybe it can just be moved to that trope instead?

~Winged Cat Girl I'm certain it will get blocked, Before I was directed to here, I had videos that showcased the Electric Soldier Porygon scene and the end parts of the Monty Python and the Holy Grail introduction credits with the mentions of Llamas. These were withdrawn following an ATT and that led me to the thought of the No Video Examples Please rule.

Is the video on Dominatrix too NSFW? Mostly near the end (around 1:27) when there seems to be a blurred out shot of Snow White flashing the dwarves with her genitals. It's censored, but still worth mentioning; the page doesn't have image links so it probably shouldn't have videos for the same reason.

I don't think the PAW Patrol video on Ship Tease fits. The trope is about when writers deliberately tease a possible future relationship between characters. I highly doubt they will ever do that on PAW Patrol, and I don't think that one frame was a legitimate Ship Tease. The video is also overly long for the one second it claims represents the trope, and has no description.

[up] Yeah, that video should go. There seems to be a single person who's been uploading PAW Patrol videos that lack sources, capitalize every letter in the description, and tend to be misuse. There's another instance of such on A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing.

Hey mods, now that you can look into who added hats, it might be a good idea to do the same for video examples if you can't already see who uploaded them. Cases like [up] this can only be resolved by tracking down the uploader.

In that case, yeah, the uploader needs to be tracked.

Either video examples "belong" to the uploader, and we need to know who that is

or video examples "belong" to the wiki, and we need to be able to freely edit them like text examples.

But this has been brought up dozens of times already by now, hasn't it?

On that note, is it possible to ban people from uploading videos? Say someone has made a habit of uploading copyright breaking videos, videos to banned tropes, troll videos, or what have you. Theoretically, the mods should have the ability to ban people from uploading videos. Maybe that'd fall under the generic editing ban, but it's different enough.

We may need to track down the uploader of the PAW Patrol Videos so that they can be moderated. I'd put them in the Video Moderation Requests chat but because the PAW Patrol videos are missing media sources, I can't find them easily.

The video from The Lonely Island on Mushroom Samba is the entire video. Is this a copyright violation? I can't remember if it started as an SNL sketch which might make it okay, but Lonely Island is kind of a distinct thing and they do sell the songs individually. (Also I was planning to use the very end of that same song as an example on Cutting Back to Reality, if that's okay.)

Alright, I've got a question.

So, we can't upload entire works, I know that. But does a Vanity Plate count as an entire work? Because I had wanted to upload the 20th Century Fox logo as an example, and I want to know if it is allowed first.

I would say no, because it's always attached to another larger work. You can't get in copyright trouble for just posting a logo. Kind of like how we're more lenient on commercials.

I plan on uploading a clip from part of this video to Ominous Visual Glitch: does 0:38 to 1:15 show enough before everything starts bugging out?
