The Scrappy of the Trope Pantheon, God of Thumps
Apparently GOW Ragnarok, a single played game, requires a PSN account
Sony is probably wondering if they should just charge people Psplus to play their games on Steam
Pantheon server for all who click here. Lost too much money and time, this coaster ain’t stopping. But really, it's awfully scuzzy of Sony to be pushing PSN accounts just to play a single-player game on PC when the Helldivers community basically cyberbullied and refunded HD2 over this same exact BS.
It's like the universe is force-teaching Sony a lesson but Sony doesn't want to learn from their mistakes.
On a related note, how were we feeling the State of Play? I came in with zero expectations and the only ones that really got my attention were Monster Hunter Wilds and Astro Bot. And only one of those is a first-party PS game.
This tweet
brings up a great point: What does it say about modern first-party PlayStation games that people are championing one that looks much more like a first-party Nintendo game than anything else they've published in the past five years?

A good chunk of the presented games are just probably there due to legacy with the PlayStation company (mainly during the PS1, PS2, or PSP days). And Infinity Nikki, the closest Eternights equivalent in the presentation looks more like Genshin Impact x Palworld with Dead or Alive character designs. Not very appealing for the weebs.
"You can't spell 'Wario' without 'war'."Where Winds Meet is good looking Wuxia fun, even if its also a Multi platform game.

Yeah, not sure I was feeling Infinity Nikki either.
I already made a stance
about this topic on Twitter (take a hike, Elon), but I'll save you guys a click:
It tells me that Sony needs to SERIOUSLY stop gushing about how many pores they can render into a 3D angsty human with daddy issues and lulling people into daily brainless grinds featuring space people shooting each other (I really was vibing with Concord until they revealed it was just a 5v5 FPS Overwatch clone) and just let themselves be weird sometimes like in the earlier PlayStations.
I mean, look, they want their award-winning 80-hour long bouts into depression or shooters that demand you play every day? That's fine. But they shouldn't be the only output.
The real problem is that there's barely any variety in the PS5 era. I'm not exactly in any rush to score "TLOU Barely Remastered Deluxe Edition 2.4675410" or "Shooter Game Where Everyone Tries to Be Funny to Some Degree", but stuff like Astro Bot? I'd consider it! And for pity's sake, they have a VAST library of IP that hasn't been touched in 10+ years, what exactly is stopping them from doing a new Sly Cooper (whom I bring up because his first game is coming to PlayStation Plus) or even a new MotorStorm? (I almost mentioned Ape Escape since they haven't been in anything since 2010-11, but whoops! Japan Studio is still dust. Unless Team Asobi gets to do something that isn't just "Cute Robot Hero and the Million Zillion PS Cameos"?)
TL;DR: GIVE US SOME FREAKING VARIETY, SONY!
As far as how I felt about the state of play, I expected nothing and still somehow was delivered less.
Concord might be fine honestly (disappointment in what it is non-withstanding). Overwatch 2 has fumbled so badly lately that honestly all it has to do is be fun and competent and it'll steal Overwatch's lunch money.
Which then Blizzard tried model encryption and nerfed some characters for OW 2 wrecking a lot of interest in that direction... which only compounded the issues OW 2 has of meaningless boring progression, only tailored to E-Sports and so on.
If there is to be another Overwatch boom with other games, they need to really attempt to capture the singularity that was Overwatch 1 in its entirety. Concord is not at all that, its playing it super safe and I dont think it will get any kind of traction... I give 2 years max before it shuts down.
@Targetmaster Joe: To be fair, really accurate leaker Midori said there's gonna be more Sony games at Summer Games Fest next friday, so I wouldn't catch the chickens before they hatch yet.
Watch SymphogearOooof, I think I see what you meant there...
Your point is valid, but I'm not exactly expecting any of those chickens to be, say, Sly Cooper 5, MediEvil 3, Jak and Daxter 5, or even PaRappa the Rapper 3 and Gravity Rush 3.
If they announce any of those titles or anything that has to do with IP they haven't used in forever, I'll eat a hat!
Can't speak for Hong Kong, but last I checked, the Switch was schooling the PS5 in Japan.

I have a feeling Lost Soul Aside will be there, as that's under Sony's China Joy project.

With Sony's policy of AAA or nothin... I wouldn't expect any of those I Ps to show up, at least for a long time. 6+ year development time on a project means less comes out.
Naughty Dog is never going to touch Jak and Daxter again especially, their studio head wants to make movies in games more than an actual game.
NanaOn-Sha hasn't made a game since 2016 as they tried to kickstarter up a rhythm game in 2017 that failed completely. Maybe if Sony threw them money in 2017 a project might be coming out soon?... probably the only realistic option here.
Sony closed Japan Studio so no Gravity Rush.
MediEvil doesn't have a studio as well, Guerrilla Cambridge was closed.
Sucker Punch is rumored to be working on Ghost of Tsushima 2 so they wont be returning to Sly and the devs who did Thieves in Time, Sanzaru Games, have moved over to just VR games.

I probably should've mentioned that I don't even expect the OG developers to bring those series back, and Sony could reassign those IP to different devs like Team Asobi taking over Ape Escape and Gravity Rush, but. Yeah, thanks for the reality check.
And for the record, this "AAA or nothing" policy they're adopting sounds like they're begging for trouble. It's insanely foolhardy to believe every single AAA title will be a slam dunk.
Do they have any contingency plans for when one AAA title doesn't meet expectations?
What if there are people who aren't even interested in AAA angst trips or live-service BS? They'll just flock over to the competition!
I mean, I can't be the only one who sees the holes in this, right?
In case I wasn't clear, stuff like TLOU 2 is just overrated. Maybe TLOU 1 had merit, but the second was just…eh.

Besides the obvious case of corporate greed, I'm wondering if there's some other reason at play here for this kind of decision making. Like they have to realize that this is heading for a wall crash at high speeds. No it wont lead to a literal crash, but we could see MAJOR disruption in the gaming ecosystem.
I am not sure they do see it. PS 5 sales right now are on par with PS 4 sales at the same period, but less overall thanks to the part shortfall earlier in its life, and releasing games on PC seems to be their plan for 'growth' in a stagnated market.
Sony doesn't seem to care they are spending more money on less games. The Insomniac leaks were staggering on how much they are spending and how long things are taking.
Nor do they seem to care that they have essentially lost the Japanese AA scene and indie scene to Nintendo in its entirety due to their double standards.

Astro Bot coming to PS5 on September 6, 2024!
