Before the time of humanity, there was a time of magic, deities and cruelties. The age where precursors of humanity suffered at the hands of malevolent gods called Daemons. This age was called “Old Earth” or “The Age of Daemons”. The Age of Daemons would end when a deity calling itself God-Creator and its first creations Angel-Machines waged war against diabolic Daemons to save the world from their clutches. God-Creator and his forces proved to be victorious, but influence of Daemons proved to be too enrooted in the world that the deity saw no choice but to destroy this world and create “New Earth.” With the soul of the denizens of Old Earth, God-Creator created humanity with Ambers of Creation (an element which Angel-Machines are also made of, albeit with different nature)

However, even with the great cleansing, the essence of the Old Earth called by modern scholars “Lifeblood of Magic” became a fundamental part of the world itself. As such, magic flourished in the world, birthing beings like mages, gods and monsters of varying kinds. They were called “Oldkins”. Oldkins and magic coexisted with humanity in a strained harmony… until the fall of Roman Empire, Han Dynasty and other centres of magic. Not to mention Gotterdammerung, an event that either killed or severely weakened all pantheons.

These events started an era named “Dark Age of Magic”, where the effects of Lifeblood to the world was minimal. During this period, an unknown malevolent force called the Rot, a force that turns a human into a monster (Rotten Being) corresponding to their Sin (like how Bloodlust would turn them into a Homicider (werebeast) or Greed into a Devourer (vampire), but this is not a strict rule) resurged and terrorized humanity. Around this time, the civil war among Angel-Machines occured, resulting in some of them turning into Demon-Organisms.

This state of affairs lasted until 2000, start of the new millenia. Influence of Lifeblood grew exponentially, resulting in the resurgence of magic and oldkin. There was an attempt of establishing a Masquerade… but it lasted only a week. Deeming that hiding the existence of magic would be a futile attempt, Mage Union (former secret society of mages) with WORM (hunter of Daemonkin, creations of Daemons) and Knight Order of Zaziel (patrons of God-Creator and Angel-Machines, hunters of Rotten Beings) elected to organize an ordered revelation of magic. This event is officially called “The Second Renaissance”.

As of late, a strange phenomenon has been occuring throughout the world. Individuals with strong affinity towards Lifeblood (Oldkin) or Ambers of Creation (creations of God-Creator) tend to gather towards a particular places, which are designated as “Magic Magnets”. A metropolis in the East Coast of the USA by the name of "Linburn" is one such city.

No one knows the fundamental reason behind this phenomenon. But then again… do you need to know?

Welcome to the world of magic!

Hello, hello. Some might remember this RP, but some might not. It doesn’t matter. This is a relaunch of urban fantasy RP called Uncanny Tales of Linburn. You can either play as mages, nerfed mythological gods, oldkin in general, Rotten Beings (vampires and werewolves are included here), Daemonkin (servants of Daemons that can be oddly Lovecraftian), Angel-Machines, Demon-Organisms or other beings that you create (if you require some assistance in creating characters of these species, always feel free to contact me)

Requirements for characters that apply to all species:

  • No stereotype or Mary Sue

  • They must either be a denizen of Linburn or someone who just arrived at the city

  • Not grimdark of grimdark, nor ridiculously goofy

Requirements specific to species:

     Mages

  • Mages can have any form of magic, however, the more specialized he is one magic, the more powerful that one magic becomes. As an example, in terms of power, fire magic of a mage who only learned Fire magic will be a lot stronger than fire magic of the one who learned Fire and Ice. However, it is not discouraged to have a mage of multiple specialties.

     Gods

  • Gods are heavily affected by Gotterdammerung. They suffer from severe loss of power, and even from loss of memories. You can create other sorts of negative consequences, if you wish.

     Oldkin

  • Anything that is made of Lifeblood and created during New Earth can be considered an oldkin. Be creative.

     Daemonkin

  • Daemonkin are generally more eldritchy, although they don't have to be. They're created by Daemons, and that's all you need to create your own Daemonkin.

     Angel-Machines

  • Angel-Machines have three forms: True, Human and Manifestation. True is the mechanical form, Human is human (obviously) and Manifestation can be anything you wish (it doesn't have to be mechanical).

     Demon-Organisms

  • Same as Angel-Machines, although their True form is closer to a biological monstrosity (it can still be mechanical, if you wish). Just stick with "fallen angel/demon" concept with these rules and it's all cool.

     Rotten Beings

  • Their powers have to be themed around some form of sin or evil. Otherwise, get creative.
  • Their shared weaknesses are holy objects made by Tears of Angels.
  • Vampires are mostly Devourers. Werewolves are mostly Homiciders. Mages with corrupted magic and a cult dedicated to them are called Philosophers. Monsters who seem angelic on the outside are Lucifers. People possessed by Wraiths are called Hollows. Knights or other humans who seek twisted justice or vengeance are called False Templars.

     Knights of Knight-Order
  • They use weapons made from Tears of Angels to combat Rotten Beings

     The Dead

  • There are three types of the Dead that are connected to the Spirit House, New Earth equivalent of afterlife: Wraiths, Revenants and Phantoms. Wraiths are those whose Rot Purification process was unsuccessful. Revenants are walking corpses that have unfinished vendettas. Phantoms are those who are displaced from the Spirit House due to lack of storage.

  • However, you do not have to follow these rules.

There are some changes that I have implemented to this game:

  • You can only play and make two characters maximum. If one of the characters dies, then you can make another.
  • You can introduce some new lores of your own, but new cosmic/deity level species (basically, anything besides Daemons, Gods, Angel-Machines, Demon-Organisms and God-Creator) are prohibited and always will be.

Like in the previous game, there is an overarching plot, but you’re free to create and have your own adventures.

Feel free to ask questions to me. Feel free to criticize me if I screw up somehow.

These rules are mandatory:

  • No player drama.
  • No OP actions (auto hit, ghosting, insta-heal and such)
  • Listen to GM (unless he’s being unreasonable)
  • Have fun

Finally...

This is a little bit of an oddball, but here's hoping it works grin Let me know if the physiology needs any nerfing in regards to the setting.

  • Name: Nayme
  • Species: Angel-Machine - Manifestation - Tengu
    • In the days of yore, the Tengu were created to serve as messengers for the God-Creator, their swift wings and dark plumage allowing them to traverse the land to pass word from one battalion to the next. However, with the advent of the New Earth, the Tengu were presumed to have all been decimated. Whilst there have been rumours of a Tengu resurgence, sightings of them have been incredibly rare, to the degree that they are considered by many to be cryptids.
  • Age: Youthful. Not quite an adult, not quite a child.
  • Gender: No thanks.
  • Appearance: Squawk. Big scary knives not included.
  • Morality: Lawful Neutral - Tengu are loyal to those they serve, through right or wrong.
  • Powers and Abilities:
    • Mimicry: One of the Tengu's defining characteristics, though some would consider it a curse more than a power. Tengu do not have voices of their own, and instead can only mimic those that they hear. They can do so perfectly, regardless of the pitch, timbre, or language of the speaker- indeed, the Tengu don't need to understand the words themselves to repeat them. Tengu's have incredibly sharp memories, capable of remembering words from years ago- however, they are not infallible, and without repeated usage some phrases can be forgotten in time.
    • Play The Music: As a corollary to the above, Nayme can perfectly replicate not only the human voice, but that of any instrument it hears.
    • Avian Physiology: The wings of a Tengu are strong and allow them to fly. While at a push Nayme can fly for days at a time, its usual limit is six hours. Its running speed is comparable to that of a human, perhaps even a little slower, but its maximum speed while flying is twice that of an athlete. Its beak is powerful; at its strongest, with the best angle and without interruption, it could be capable of breaking bone. Otherwise, it's comparable to the bite of a large dog.
    • Inky Plumage: A curious quirk of the Tengu- if one were to pluck a feather from a Tengu's plumage, they would find it capable of secreting ink for upwards of a week or so. Very useful for the travelling writer.
    • Polyglot: Fitting of a messenger race, Tengu are capable of understanding and writing in many of the common languages. They are not all-encompassing, and may be unfamiliar with languages that are dead or lesser-known, but they are quick learners when it comes to words.
  • Personality: A bit of an odd one, Nayme has a naive personality in contrast to its intimidating appearance. It appears to be new to sustained social ventures, somewhat lacking in its understanding of nuance and double meanings. Nevertheless, it is eager to learn, and while it's endlessly loyal to those that it deems worthy of serving, its temperament in isolation trends towards good.
  • Backstory: Nayme was picked up on the edges of Linburn and carted to the local police station after a supposed 'altercation' with the denizens. The sight of the mysterious bird creature had perturbed some of the locals, which in turn had frightened Nayme and caused it to sound out in alarm. The officers caught the gist of this in the spurts of recollection that Nayme was able to provide them, as well as garnering a few tidbits about the bird itself, though they're still trying to piece the mysterious words together: Nayme came from the sky, called by the city, where it seeks "Destiny." "Destiny." "Your destiny, young one." "Find the reparation."
  • Miscellaneous:
    • Nayme, at all times, carries a notebook for writing.
    • Despite being an Angel-Machine, Nayme does not seem capable of shifting to any form besides its Manifestation.

Uh... whoops? Anyway, I hope this is different enough despite the similarities for it to be okay. Wasn't expecting another mimicking avian type :P

  • Name: Wren
  • Species: Oldkin – Osun
    • An extremely secluded tribal species with a mixture of traits—the most prominent being that of birds. There is a notable hierarchy and sexual dimorphism with them; females are typically comparable to humans (if not a little shorter) and have vestigial wings and innate teleportation abilities, while the males are contrastingly massive (8-10 foot on average), incredibly strong, and are capable of flight (though occasional crossovers are possible and certain tribes have the roles reversed). The focal point of each tribe is the local Mother—a particularly rare instance of female born once every generation or so that dwarfs the others and grows to incredible and monstrous sizes, requiring the majority of scavenged food and having the final say in the tribe's matters. Wren is an example of an ordinary female—if not for some reason lacking any semblance of wing whatsoever.
  • Age: 19. Physically, at least. Less so mentally.
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: 5'2". Mix of avian, mammalian, and humanoid traits. Notably lacks nails in favour of retractable claws. Long, purple tongue and prominent canine teeth. Eyes are large in comparison to her face, and have a birdlike third eyelid. Feathers are iridescent; rarely wears any clothing due to them covering her up anyhow and because of the risk of overheating.
  • Morality: Neutral, but impressionable. Osun by nature are self-serving, and that's reflective in Wren as well.
  • Powers and Abilities:
    • Teleportation: The typical ability of a wingless/female Osun, which helps make up for their flightlessness. With an accompanying burst of plumage and sulphurous smoke, Wren can warp herself to any point within her line of sight that falls under her maximum distance limit of 8 metres. Wren may chain these 'ports together up to three times before losing her breath (the process cuts off her breathing and acts as a temporary vacuum), and she can also alter the potency of the 'port so as to warp quickly and violently or warp more slowly and softly. A violent 'port (most often seen when she's startled or in the middle of a battle) usually knocks over small items in her immediate vicinity once she remanifests, but a softer 'port is next to silent and does not affect her environment nearly as much. Wren's teleporting is signalled audibly by one of two possible sounds: a sharp crack for a violent 'port, or a muted ‘puff’ for a softer 'port. The lingering smell of sulphur and burnt wood can be sensed for up to a minute and a half after each successful 'port. Interestingly, Wren can be knocked out of her 'ports mid-process—if timed correctly, one could interrupt the process as she's moving and send her sprawling as a result. However, Wren's variation of teleporting is distinct; it is fundamentally tied into her genetic makeup, and so it is very difficult for her to be affected by conventional nullifiers.
    • Enhanced Senses: These can be a detriment just as much as they can be an advantage. Wren has an internal sense much akin to birds that ties directly into the Earth's own magnetic field, which enables her to identify magnetic north on a semi-regular basis (granted if nothing's there to scramble it somehow). Her sense of touch all across her body is equivalent to that of human fingertips, and as such the soles of her feet and the palms of her hands are even more sensitive as a result. Her feathers contain ‘feelers’ which enable her to be constantly aware of her immediate surroundings at all times (which also prevents her from Telefraging on accident), and her distinctive eyes enable her to see targets from a long distance and even grant her the ability to perceive thermals. She has a broader range of taste and smell and can easily track down individual scents, and her hearing is equally sensitive.
    • Abnormal Physiology: Wren possesses doubled joints and is incredibly athletic as a result; able to curl up into a ball like a cat and even bend herself backwards to the point where she becomes horizontal. Her lack of fatty masses and refined musculature also means she has great upper-body strength—able to scramble up walls and obstacles as well as use this enhanced physicality in conjunction with her flexibility in order to wrap herself right around poles like some sort of serpent. Wren's plumage flutters and shifts according to her more positive emotions and stiffens like hackles when under stress; as well as naturally providing an efficient protection to extreme weather conditions and moulting on a regular basis according to seasonal change. Her clotting process is quickened in comparison to a normal human's and her healing acts much more effectively—she is able to regrow even lost limbs with time—however it can take hours or even days to actually kick in and can still take multiple weeks to mend the more severe injuries. Her blood is of a more vibrant shade of red and of a thinner consistency than that of a human's, her tongue is long and prehensile, and her teeth are more comparable to that of a wolf's than a primate's.
  • Personality: An overly cautious, sensitive sort with a high degree of curiosity but a matching sense of distrust towards newcomers. By her nature Wren is benevolent and gentle, but unrecognized faces or certain triggers (aggressive stances, loud voices, and impermissible approaches) can figuratively and literally cause her hackles to raise in defense—after which it is not uncommon for her to snarl and swiftly teleport away to a corner someplace. While indeed territorial and weary, Wren rarely lashes out unless pushed repeatedly; most often snapping the air or scratching at an arm if she feels intolerant of people's business intruding on hers. Yet despite this, she seems to paradoxically lack a sense of personal space—regularly moving (or teleporting) right up into people's faces to study them better and reacting as aforementioned if they behave indignantly over it. Wren seems to have a mixture of animal instinct and base human behaviours: she scratches herself with her legs like a dog would, sits in a perched position, and seems to prioritize her mouth and head over her hands and arms—yet she also knows how to drink from a beaker, regularly uses hand gestures and pointing to get her message across, and incorporates the odd word or short sentence of English when necessary. Despite her more... difficult traits, Wren also possesses an undying loyalty and an innate sense of maternal instinct towards young children; however her somewhat violent and bestial idea of dealing with her enemies is perhaps not the best model of morality out there.
  • Backstory: Originating from the Ninin tribe of the Osun, Wren had the incredible misfortune of being born without any sign of wing structure in her body—meaning that if she was allowed to grow and mate, the society of her tribe (which is heavily based on the power and girth of one's wings) would be undermined by her very existence. With the local Mother declaring it best that she be cast out, Wren was left abandoned to fend for herself in the forests and plains—too young to recall her origins and as such growing up more bestial than intelligent. Eventually being drawn towards Linburn, the lost Osun has managed to get by with steadily growing knowledge and usage of mimicry to get and/or steal food, and has managed to grasp the fundamentals of her innate teleporting ability enough to be able to use it to her benefit. With her origins still unknown to her, the presence of other bizarre creatures may either help or hinder her in finding her place in the world. Especially with the apparent presence of another birdlike entity too.
  • Miscellaneous:
    • Wren's teleporting is actually a more complicated procedure than it initially appears to be. With the ‘feelers’ intermingled in her plumage, she subconsciously casts a powerful electric discharge around herself; which rapidly dematerializes her and warps her to the point she has targeted. In the first few seconds of movement and the first few seconds of materialization she is still technically substantial, which explains why one can knock her out of it when timed correctly.
    • Wren can mimic sounds she hears in a manner similar to that of a lyre bird; able to copy voices, environmental noises, and instruments to an extremely efficient degree. This enables her to pick up on spoken tongues relatively quickly by simply parroting certain phrases back and incorporating it into her normal speech, but complete fluency in her own voice is still beyond her due to her lack of initial mental development.

Well, this looks interesting. Vampire time? Vampire time.

  • Name: Armando Morelli
  • Species: Rotten Being - Devourer (Vampire)
  • Age: 24
  • Gender: Male
  • Appearance: Gaunt and pale, with an eyepatch over one eye.
  • Morality: Chaotic Neutral. Though self-serving at heart, Armando understands that sometimes the best way to help yourself is to help others, and is willing to cooperate so long as each party understands the other's self-interest.
  • Powers and Abilities:
    • Superhuman: Far stronger and more durable than a human, and doesn't feel pain. He can flip cars, punch through steel, and take several low-caliber bullets with minimal bruising. His best quality, however, is his speed; Armando is easily able to skirt the sound barrier. As a result, he prefers dodging attacks to tanking them, generally.
    • Super Senses: The nose of a bloodhound, the ears of a bat, and the eyes of a hawk. All of Armando's senses are far greater than a humans. He can even fight reasonably well while completely blinded.
    • Claws and Fangs: Retractable, and sharp enough to slide through flesh and bone.
    • Wall Walking: Armando can walk or crawl on any surface as though it were the ground
    • Regeneration: Other than his heart and brain, Armando heals very quickly when harmed, up to regrowing a limb in a matter of minutes. However, as Armando's left eye was destroyed by blessed silver as a child, before he developed this ability, said eye can never grow back.
    • Consumption: The Sin of his family is Gluttony. Where most vampires drink the blood of the living to sustain themselves, Armando can consume anything. So long as he can fit it in his jaws, which he can unhinge like a snake, he can devour it. His stomach is a bottomless void, dissolving anything he consumes into raw energy to power his other abilities. All his other superhuman abilities draw from his body's energy pool, and so excessive use of said abilities must be counterbalanced with more eating. Living organic matter (be it blood or fresh meat) provides him the most energy, followed by dead organic matter. Inorganic matter is highly inefficient for him to eat, and so he generally doesn't consume it.
  • Personality: Ruthlessly pragmatic, and a bit snide. Armando likes to think he's smarter than most people, but is also very aware of the Dunning-Kruger effect, and accepts that he doesn't know everything. Some might call him a coward, but Armando merely prioritizes his own survival above anything else. This is likely the result of watching his parents die in front of him. Despite this, he isn't at all bothered by talking about this event, coming across as remarkably well-adjusted despite the trauma of the experience.
  • Backstory: The Morelli Clan of vampires dates back centuries, though few are aware of it. The family has never been particularly wealthy or renowned. As far as the world is concerned, they're an average Italian-American family, albeit one with a history of chronic albinism. Rather than gothic castles and velvet coffins, the Morellis have always lived simple, peaceful lives, with most becoming chefs. This doesn't preclude the occasional would-be hunter from coming after them, but most are promptly dealt with.
    • Armando's parents weren't quite so lucky, having been targeted by a particularly competent hunter with some unspecified grudge (Armando would later suspect he had the wrong vampire family). As he turned to dust, Armando's father drove his fist through the vampire hunter's chest, and the silver knife that would have struck Armando's brain was thrown off course. It permanently disfigured his left eye instead.
    • The orphaned Armando was taken in by his uncle in Linburn. His childhood there was remarkably quiet for a Devourer, and he wound up eventually starting his own business, a restaurant. Unimaginatively titled Armando's, the Italian style hole-in-the-wall is now his pride and joy. The sudden increase in less-than-human patrons, however, has him a bit worried for the future of his business in Linburn.
  • Miscellaneous: Because of his ability of consumption, Armando can never put on weight. The price of Gluttony is to hunger forever.

Incidentally, do vampires have the standard weaknesses in the universe (i.e. sunlight, silver, holy things) or nah? And if so, should I list them on the sheet?

  • Name: Fancy Tim (Not his given name because that would be really dumb, just an amnesiac's odd choice for a temporary identity)
  • Species: Undead. His particular type of life after death is not consistent with most known varieties, so his exact nature is a bit unique.
  • Age: 23 (Probably. Amnesia isn't doing him any favors)
  • Gender: Male
  • Appearance: Tim is average in height with a slim build. His hair is black and messy, though it doesn't grow anymore so it does have a bunch of bald patches. Skin is unnaturally pale due to his lack of circulation. The poor guy also exhibits many minor signs of early decomposition, though that particular problem isn't progressing. A large chunk is missing from his right ear, though it appears to be an injury that occurred long before he died. While Tim isn't really too concerned about these issues himself, he makes sure to wear obscuring clothes to keep things simple. Hoodies and long pants are common to see on him for this reason.
  • Powers and Abilities:
    • Corpse Physiology- It wasn't his fault (maybe?) that he became an undead being, but that's just what happened to Tim. His mind is still perfectly unaffected, sans memories, but his physical body has been altered drastically. First of all is a complete lack of physical needs. His soul provides all the energy his body needs and does all the thinking, so he is free from the tyranny of hunger, thirst, and fatigue. On top of this, his sensitivity to pain and temperature have been dulled to negligible levels. Since his body is kept moving through his soul rather than any physical reason, dismemberment won't stop limbs from functioning though he won't be able to properly attach them again without help. Killing him is in fact impossible to do without something that can target his soul, as the metaphysical sum of his very being will live on no matter what happens to the flesh... even if he can't do much without a functioning body. His brain is being slowly eaten, but it's alright because his soul took over all his brain functions. This has the side benefit of making him immune to certain kinds of mind manipulating magic. His body can operate at its maximum efficiency for strength and speed, but this causes the expected stress on the flesh. No natural healing occurs either, though magic can still mend him. Hair and nail growth have halted completely. While he decomposed slightly in the time between dying and becoming what he is now, the rotting process has completely halted.

    • Loose Soul- Fancy Tim's unusual situation has left his soul a bit... unhinged from the flesh it was once contained in. His essence can enter objects he has an emotional connection to, empowering them in durability and effectiveness. Some particularly abstract effects might manifest for certain objects, like, as a hypothetical, a flashlight's beam of light could have a magical effect. It's fairly vague but any use beyond a simple improvement in effectiveness would be run through the GM first. As an amnesiac he doesn't really have anything he feels connected to yet, but that can change. Empowering an item with his soul won't remove his control over his body, they have a remote connection.

    • Unexplained Knowledge- Despite his lack of memories of how he got this understanding, Tim has a solid grasp on the theory behind magic. While he can't use it practically, his knowledge is there if needed. Adding on to this, Tim has a lot of practical knowledge on anesthetics and muscle relaxants of both magical and scientific nature.

    • Worm- Earlier it was mentioned that this undead man is having his brain eaten. That is the work of a worm that Tim has named Apple. It entered through his right ear when he first died and began to make itself at home. All was going as normal before Tim's soul reattached itself to the corpse. Continued consumption of the brain of what was now a magical entity caused a few changes in Apple's biology. He can't die, or at least is living far longer than a worm has any right to, and has acquired intelligence equivalent to a dog. Tim is close to forming enough of a bond with his body invader turned pet that his soul would be able to bond with it. This would allow him to assume control over the worm and make it quicker, stronger, and larger (like a large dog) than any worm has any right to be. Apple's natural abilities only grow with the amount of brain matter it eats. Currently, Apple lives inside Tim's right ear canal.

  • Morality: He thinks he would be Lawful Neutral if he could still remember what rules he stood for, but right now he is a True Neutral.
  • Personality: Tim likes to see himself in a negative light. In his eyes, he's simply someone borrowing the original's body. A shallow approximation of the surely valuable human that was there before amnesia. In Tim's eyes, you see, nurture is far more important than nature. Therefore he dissociates himself completely from whoever he was before he revived from death. With this view, Tim cares not for who he "once was" and has little interest in what he might have forgotten. His goal is to make himself a "real" person. Someone who has shaped and been shaped by others. And to achieve that he wants to simply live life. Despite this negative view of his current self, though, Tim presents a positive attitude towards everyone around him. Even if he might be cynical when talk turns to him, he'll always be ready to give his best efforts to those who have lead an actual life of experiences. By being close to those people he hopes to become real himself. He has a sharp mind despite his missing brain and is quick to pick up on what others are thinking. His only "relationship" at the moment is with Apple. He latched onto a worm because he was that desperate.
  • Backstory: As you've read by now, Tim has severe amnesia regarding his identity. The earliest thing he remembers is waking up at the side of the road with part of his ear missing and a distinct presence of light decomposition. Understandably unsettled by his lack of memory regarding how he got in this situation, he sat by the road and considered things. The only object of note he had on his person was an unfinished manuscript for a story. Figuring that it was probably written by him, the amnesiac man read through the whole thing on the road. Nothing that jogged his memory, though the setting sounded familiar: Linburn. It was a haunting name, one that drew his attention. Despite having no interest in who he might have been, there was a distinct pull towards this Liburn that he felt. And so he started walking. He knew the way somehow, even if he didn't know how. Through rain and sun he walked, never tiring. Along the way he chose a new name for himself, something taken from the manuscript. Not the main character of course, that wouldn't fit someone as insignificant as him. Rather an odd name from a character that couldn't even be called tertiary: Fancy Tim. It was absurd but something about it jumped out at him. And so Fancy Tim came to Linburn and started his brand new borrowed existence.
  • Miscellaneous: While he does work at a book store, Tim is working on the unfinished manuscript he had on his person. It feels like a duty to the old him, the one that no longer was, to finish his work. It's slow going though. Tim doesn't have as much of a knack for writing clearly, yet more proof of how his lack of memories makes him inferior. On a more positive note Tim has an odd relationship with Apple, the worm in his head. Feeding him in public by holding food up to his damaged right ear, for instance. Pretty nice considering his brain is slowly being devoured completely by Apple.

[up][up] All Rotten Beings have weakness in the form of holy objects made of Tears of Angels. I'll add it to the first post for future reference. Also, it would be helpful if you could list that.

Besides that...

You know what? Adaptation time. Lucy's here, so may god help us all.

  • Name: Lucy Melanie Livingston
  • Species: Oldkin – Mage
  • Age: 16
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: 5'0. Deathly pale complexion most often and sometimes mussed hair. Overall looks gaunt and unhealthy, yet carries a gentle (albeit fragile) demeanour. Rather than avoid direct eye contact, Lucy seems to have a habit of staring intently (this changes obviously if the person on the other end embarrasses or flusters her somehow). Can gain a frightening look of sternness when angered and even glares with the purest intent to kill on occasion, and tends to vary between excessively covering clothing (such as her characteristic baggy hoodies) or a simple black shirt and jeans depending on her mood. Eyes gain a notable pinprick of light when she's using her powers excessively.
  • Morality: Neutral Good
  • Powers and Abilities:
    • Ink Manipulation: Lucy is mentally tied to her own produced ink, and has incredibly precise control over it as such. With pure instinct she can lash out with it in violent yet uncontrolled bursts, but with concentration she can mold it into weapons and manipulators able to be used for a variety of situations. She can manipulate the density of the ink by packing it tightly together or stretching it into loose membranes, and her versatility with it allows her to form practically anything needed for a situation granted if it isn't overly complex. Lucy most commonly shapes her ink into external tendrils or uses it to enhance her physical strikes, but high velocity pellets launched from her skin are also used for offensive purposes on occasion.
    • Ink Generation: By isolating excess fats and fluids in her body, Lucy can create new reserves of ink for her usage by pushing it out through her pores; either as a gradual trickle or a violent burst akin to a geyser. It is directly tied to her metabolism and as such overuse of this ability can quickly fatigue her and put her at risk of starvation and dehydration—but she is able to simply pull back the ink supplies if they've remained intact and absorb it back into her skin to rejuvenate herself. Theoretically, Lucy could perhaps convert other parts of her body into ink, but out of fear of the risk and whether or not she'd be able to reverse it properly she primarily avoids using anything other than disposable materials anyhow.
    • Tactile Telepathy: Of a sort, at least. Either through direct physical contact or by concentrating through her ink, Lucy can extend her psionic signal out and into others for a brief moment in time to snatch up flashes of information (most commonly the person's current emotions). This is indicated visually by a slight electrical discharge that bounces off of her skin and the person she touches, or similarly arcs of static that flash through her ink if she decides to do it from a distance. Lucy has yet to solidify this ability into anything substantial, but it can be useful for gathering her enemies' intentions in the heat of a battle.
  • Personality: A withdrawn, painfully shy, yet incredibly selfless and softhearted individual. Lucy puts herself at detriment for the benefit of others, and that is seen most clearly by her sickliness and severe amounts of stress she has to wade through. She's the type of person to stand in silence for hours at the side of the room only to gauge people as they talk amongst each other—yet be the first to approach with gentle reassurances and calming diffusions if the situation somehow escalates and someone is hurt. She seems to think her opinion is somehow invalid and only useful when asked for, and even then her prominent stammer when pressed on things can make it difficult to get her to speak most of the time. An expressionistic sort, Lucy relieves her pent-up anxieties through paintings, music, and other such artistry—things she is always reluctant to share for reasons more than simple shyness. In reality, Lucy is a very opinionated, unforgiving, and even hurtful individual against those she perceives as being unjust or somehow in the wrong, but her own doubts and sense of self-awareness prevent her from making her more intolerant side visible most of the time. While under opposition she can be rendered nigh-unrecognizable, Lucy remains a genuine person at heart and is always willing to provide support to those who need it. Granted if they haven't avoided amending some prior wound inflicted on her, of course.
  • Backstory: The Livingstons are a family with a long history of mages and individuals with extranormal abilities, and Lucy is no exception to this. With the typical Livingston manifesting powers based off of their personality, desires, obsessions, or fears, Lucy gained the ability of ink manipulation and generation at a fairly young age—first manifesting while she was painting a portrait of her then-crush at school. Since then, Lucy has worked on refining her abilities in semi-secrecy, with the only ones other than her knowledgeable of her mage status being her younger brother David and her older sister Hannah. With a shy nature and a burning desire to help others, Lucy has elected to further develop her abilities to do just that—aiming to gather enough courage and capability in order it go out into the world and work on making it a better place for people. Unfortunately, her family has a history of instability and dark secrets unknown to her, and with her father remaining absent and the situation of her family's finances being poor, there's no telling what her family—and her own subconscious—may be hiding from her...
  • Miscellaneous:
    • Lucy often auctions off her paintings to those willing to buy, and though she isn't exactly well-known (her reclusiveness helps contribute to that) her style is distinctive and of a niche melancholy. Despite this career choice potentially being lucrative for her simply because of how many paintings she has stored and makes each day, Lucy currently works as a shop assistant—managing stock and occasionally working behind the counter in a small corner store for knickknacks and antiques. It's not uncommon to find her lost in thought and humming to herself while sifting through the shelves.

  • Name: Kathy Burnquist
  • Species: Human
  • Age: 17
  • Gender: Magical Girl
  • Appearance: Her work outfit. Not to say that she doesn't have any other outfits, but she ends up wearing it around town anyway. Kinda short.
  • Morality: Lawful Angry
  • Powers and Abilities:
    • Black Blade 『Demon Stabber』: Named it herself. Unnaturally light and ever keen, Demon Stabber was gifted to her a few years ago for being really good at killing Rotten little shits. Forged from the Tears of an Angel in her possession, Kathy holds it near and dear to herself. Its only truly special property is its tendency to rattle in its sheathe in the presence of Rotten Ones.
    • Gun: A wrist-mounted version of the R0639 SMG. Somehow manages to be belt-fed, via a connection in her backpack, which means she can shoot a lotta things.
    • Cuban Pete: Carries with her two kinds of explosives: multiple grenades specially forged from scrap Tears, the individual fragments normally too impure to be considered weapons grade but functioning just fine as shrapnel, and plastic explosives. The latter isn't special or anything, but it's true that most Rotten don't like being buried underneath buildings.
    • 1980-something Honda Civic: For the kind of person who want to hunt abominations, but their employers won't let them use cars in the fleet until they're 21.
    • Plate Carrier: Having more pockets than anyone else in Linburn is a power. Also contains ceramic bulletproof plating, like the one attached to her arm.
    • Actual Magical Powers: The only reason why they let in a pre-teen into the fold, besides her zealotry, is because she has the unusual ability to jump around like an anime protagonist. Leaping over mildly high buildings in a single bound, running along walls, generally being pretty good at running, that kind of thing. Kathy has no idea why and is reticent to find out.
  • Personality: She's kinda mad. Mad about Rotten Beings. That isn't to say that those are the only things that piss her off, but it definitely informs the rest of her personality. She's surly and doesn't connect well with other people, and what better excuse to get out of social situations can you have than "Sorry, I need to go kill something"? A workaholic who really needs to take things slower. She doesn't immediately trust non-Rotten magical beings, but she doesn't hate them either.
  • Backstory: Bursting onto the scene at the young age of 12, Kathy Burnquist really is kind of an enigma. Why, of all people, is she actually good at fightan the evil bad guys? Who would trust a teenager to go around with a fully-automatic weapon? Technically you can't drive alone until you're 18, so who waived that restriction? The Knights are a powerful organization, but they seem to be a bit eager to kit out an orphan girl with some nice equipment. A good deal of this is because the only thing she's been more proactive in than Rotten-slaying is keeping her personal history a secret. Operating with an almost perfect record for 5 years now, she shows no signs of stopping...but what, exactly, is the fire that fuels her burning hatred for the Rotten? You know, besides that they're unholy creations of sin and darkness? It's a secret that she cannot ever tell anyone
  • Miscellaneous: Did you know that once you're 16 or older, it is legal to drop out of the educational system in the United States in order to pursue employment? That's right, no high school hijinx for her. All business, all the time.

  • Name: Wilmarina Printer
  • Species: Mage (Diviner)
  • Age: 20
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: Wilmarina is short and stocky. She has brown eyes and waist-length hair, which she gathers into two low pigtails. She usually wears some sort of business attire with pleated skirts and some form of practical-looking leather boots. Most notably, she never seems to take off her darkly colored aviator glasses.
  • Morality: Neutral/Neutral Good (If provoked)
  • Powers & Abilities:
    • Huginn & Muninn: Wilmarina can use her own eyes as familiars. They look like her eyes, each bearing a pair of crow wings and legs, and each possessing a small mouth with sharp teeth. Wilmarina can see through her two familiars, and can also toggle on the abilities to a) see through things, b) remotely read text, or c) see "hidden" things (like lies) one at a time, with a steady stamina drain. Finally, they are able to fire off medium-powered magical blasts from themselves, which also eats away at Wilmarina's magic stores. If one of them is destroyed, then she can make a new one with another eye, though it requires a ritual.
    • Foresight: Wilmarina's most powerful ability is a sort of precognition, which lets her know what will happen in the future if she and the people around her continue on their current paths. Some of her predictions never come to pass, but some do because of a series of freak occurrences. She cannot control this ability, her visions coming and going as they please with no way to tell if they are accurate or not.
  • Personality: Quiet and reserved, probably because she feels more like listening than speaking. On the rare occasion that she speaks, it's in a monotone cracked murmur. However, she has a kind disposition wrapped under all that mysticism, and will often help people when others are not looking. Overall, she may seem strange to some people and more concerned with minuscule matters than the big picture—but those people have never heard the phrase "For want of a nail..."
  • Backstory: Wilmarina was once a humble fortuneteller, but she was forced to flee because of her successful prediction of a mob boss' son dying. The mob boss accused her of killing his son, which she denied, saying that she only predicted things, and he could have been saved had he been moved to a different hospital. Being chased, she fled to Linburn, where the mob boss' underlings were too scared to pursue her due to the town's reputation for uncanny happenings. A few weeks after her arrival, she took a job as a librarian due to her love of literature, but remains anxious, as mob bosses don't have a reputation for giving up easily...
  • Miscellaneous:
    • Huginn and Muninn consider each other as brothers and in fact, have their own distinct personalities.
    • The farther Huginn and Muninn are sent away from her, the weaker her powers get (with the drain increasing).

I'm not quite sure if this will work.

  • Name: Avery Eirin
  • Species: Rotten Being (Lust)
  • Age: >100 years
  • Gender: Genderless
  • Appearance: In Avery's natural form, it resembles a dark brown/greyish slime-woman-thing, just under 200cm tall. Has one eye with dark sclera and deep blue iris. Its "hair" is more like a oily, prehensile mess of gooey appendages, and a heart-shaped "core" is visible in its chest. To ease daily matters, Avery has two favoured humanlike forms:
    • A 31 year old-looking Indo-European man, going by Frederick Nair. Somewhat dark skin, dark brown eyes, sports a buzz cut and a goatee. 181cm tall.
    • A 22 year old-looking Japanese woman, going by Hibiki Moriaki. Fair skin, navy blue eyes, loose shoulder-length hair similarly dyed navy blue. 169cm tall.
  • Morality: Chaotic Neutral, though Avery thinks itself a Chaotic Good.
  • Powers/Abilities:
    • Shapeshifting: Avery is able to alter its appearance into any organic being. Time it takes for its appearance to wholly transform is dependent on how different the intended being's physiology is (e.g. shapeshifting into a human would be much shorter than say, a spider). While it can fine-tune its features enough to precisely replicate another individual, the replication's voice will be a weird mix of Avery's natural voice (somewhat raspy female) and what Avery thinks the being's voice would sound like, and on contact their skin/fur/anything would feel gooey. With time, Avery would be able to completely mimic the intended being, voice and skin texture included. So far, the only two forms this applies to are Frederick and Hibiki.
    • Better Than You Know Yourself: Similarly, Avery can revert specific parts of a replicated form back to its slimy state. Mild contact between Avery's slime and exposed skin can immediately inform it of things like heart rate, focus of attention, and general mood. The more contact of its natural form, the more information can be gleaned, like memories, morals, motivations, but they cannot be influenced, at least not yet.
    • Pleasures of the Flesh: As a being of Lust, Avery would seek out other sentient beings to, well, indulge in. Those that have kissed or copulated with Avery are marked with its taint, making them far more susceptible to any suggestion Avery makes to them, no matter the source or context. Marked individuals may show some sort of hive mind instinct if they follow the same suggestion, acting with unnatural coordination to please their master.
    • Slime Physiology: Most attacks would harmlessly pass through Avery's liquid body, and if anything gets removed it can regenerate in due time - even its head. In fact, as long as its core is untouched, Avery is practically invulnerable (the core one organ that effectively does the job of many, brain included). It can also squeeze its body through small crevices, but a sizeable amount of slime must remain around its core (Avery can carry its core through large enough gaps).
  • Personality: Silver-tongued and sleazy, Avery is always trying to find out all about the subject of its attention. Manipulative and subtle, its main goal with most people would be to comfortably get into their pants. It views the world as difficult enough in nearly every aspect - intimacy should add to that struggle. Despite this, Avery still stops itself from pursuing anything that moves, though more to avoid negative repercussions than any moral restraint.
  • Backstory: Sometime ago in Linburn's history, there were occurrences of a "carnal demon" stemming from the Rot afflicting a woman cast out for inordinate behaviour. Avery itself is hazy on the details, the first few years of its existence spent on what an entity of Lust is wont to do - and even then, its memory only reaches back to its first meal. Eventually its initial nymphomania died down, and Avery hid away from the public eye as stories of a covetous being faded into mere legend. The Second Renaissance brought Avery back to the city it watched over, as a resurgence of Lifeblood would certainly invite various beings - all the more to savour and indulge in.
  • Misc:
    • Avery operates a small bar in the south side of Linburn, named the Pussyfoot, and mostly appears as Frederick when tending to customers. The bar also serves as its residence, through a hole in the floor behind the counter. In most other places, it chooses to mask itself as Hibiki.
    • While Avery opts to slowly work its way into someone's pants these days, there is the ever-present urge to cut loose and violate everything in its vicinity. It has heard of hunters of its kind in Linburn, though, and that is the main reason why it keeps the urge in check.
