So even the EU stuff hammers home Kylo is this manchild.

And he still wins over Rey.

Though I have to say the idea that Rey is without her knowing, actively sapping all the joy & positivity in Ben is interesting.

That has a less than ideal overlap with Dave Sim's weird gender politics

Its not a good note to hit.

Hey guess what How the emperor came back and rebuilt his army which isn't explained in the film will instead be explained by a....New tie in book.

We've officially hit the existence of actual dlc for this film to explain everything since they won't in the actual film.

Say what you say about Dark Empire but at least it bothered to explain within the story how Sidious came back for round two.

Name a more iconic Ensemble Dark Horse duo from 2003 Clone Wars, I'll wait. Current Status: Forced to be teammates in HGS

Oh my God this is the equivalent of patching an unfinished plothole filled game with payed DLC.

...The sequel trilogy finds new ways to get worse.

The paid DLC thing was a joke! No one was supposed to take it seriously!

Unfortunately cross Multimedia marketing is the New Normal

Honestly the biggest flaw with the NEU outside of a few standouts is... its rather mediocre

Its like the worst aspects of the Del Ray and Bantam era or BW novels that had to explain like where half the game went in TOR and why there will never a real KOTOR 3 stop whining you big babies!

but without the charm to it?

I mean I got sick of Denning's Grimdark angst porn as much as the next guy but come on...

Then again Denning was deranged enough to have a Cthulhu like monster eat Callista for no other reason then to take her out of the equation.

Its like Blowing up Hosnian prime... except we aren't told that, but you make sure you make it look as much like Coruscant so people will take it as big FU to the PT cause you think your saying something!

To be honest, Rise of Skywalker kind of makes a total mockery of the new supplamentary materials and renders them as obsolete as the old Expanded Universe.

It's difficult to take seriously that the books, comics or TV shows coming out today have an equal canon status with the films when the films introduce concepts out of the blue that by all rights should have been mentioned somewhere previously. Like Palpatine having a kid — how has this never been so much as alluded to in the numerous works involving the character over the years? The new EU and the films very much aren't building on each other — rather, the supplamentary material is racing to correct itself to accomodate the films and to patch up the films' plot holes post facto.

This has been a problem since the prequels.

A good chunk of material was left to books, comics, cartoons, etc.

Blah blah its worse now. I dunno! General Grievous sure came out of nowhere if you only watch the movies and he's a lot less fearsome than the narrative says he is! But dang is he HUGELY important to the story for some reason.

And Ep 2 ends with the start of the Clone Wars and the Ep 3 features its end with 99.9% of the war happening in tie-in material.

[up]At least for the most part CW kept its tie-in material to television shows. Not random books.

This is hardly news, the information is from the Visual Dictionary which came out the same day as the movie. It's been out for weeks. And the explanation is just "There are a bunch of Sith cultists in the Unknown Regions who were building the fleet in secret and used some combination of technology and the occult to resurrect him". Which can kinda be inferred in the movie anyway. It's just confirming that the guys living on an ancient Sith planet, speaking the Sith language, have elite soldiers called Sith Troopers, and with cloning technology are in fact Sith worshipers who maybe cloned Palpatine.

Mostly it was comic books

Zombie Gungans

Really pretty Female jedi that would always instantly die gruesomely

Quinlan Vos is a loose cannon Jedi that doesn't play by the Rules

Kruuhk was immortal

[up][up]Because having the material in one consistent serial narrative, while not ideal, beats a scavenger hunt for supplementary material that otherwise wouldn’t sell a single copy.

Also that the Clone Wars Series was you know, legitimately good.

Cool. It’s nice that it’s good

Doesn’t change the fact that Star Wars has been relying on the EU to fill gaps in its narrative since the prequels

Forget Grievous. Want to know anything about Maul except “wow cool”? Tough luck! Go read some books! Wait many years for a cartoon to give him a decent shake!

And Clone Wars the show was one basket but other bits of the Clone Wars happened in other material not covered by the show. So it’s not like you only need to watch one thing.

[up][up] Immortal Kruuhk is my favorite

Grievous is a Tarkin-esque figure. You don't need to know his backstory or why he's exactly important when his very position is self-explanatory. The Separatists have a huge army of droids to counter the clones, naturally it must have a general of some kind. The fact he's more machine than alien visually spells out he's the boss over the droid army. His usage of lightsabers and the fact he collects them kinda tells this is not a foe that can be easily defeated by the Jedi.

His entire purpose in the story is to keep the Clone Wars going when it should have ended with Dooku's death, and to get Obi-Wan out of Coruscant just when Palpatine makes his move on Anakin. He's not the Big Bad of the film, just a Red Herring for the Jedi before their entire Order is destroyed from behind.

Grievous as a concept has a lot more moving parts than Tarkin does

Tarkin is a high ranked guy and commands the Death Star. Cool, don’t need his shoe size. It’s too small anyway.

Not to mention that the previous movie didn’t establish someone else was in charge and suddenly go “now here’s a coughing cyborg”

Episode 3 assumes you’ve been exposed to EU material so it can hit the ground running.

You don’t need to have been. You can just roll with it. But you’ll be sorta perplexed. Episode 3 is very dense with plot and happenings and characters and beats.

So what you’re all saying is this story would have made a lot more sense as a long, serialized show, because at least then there wouldn’t be all these moving parts.

[up][up] There was explanation. It just wasn’t thorough or satisfying

[up] Not a bad idea. Not sure it could fix the bad ideas but more time to explore those bad ideas and the ideas which weren’t necessarily bad but undercooked could only have helped

[up] What's so hard about Grievous to understand? He's the General of the Droid Army to distract the Republic from their true enemy, Chancellor Palpatine, and to get Obi-Wan off the planet when he should be needed in Coruscant.

It's like asking why Vader is always wearing that helmet all the time in A New Hope back when it was a standalone film.
