Edit: I've created the index. So far I've added only those pages that have mandatory waiting periods already in effect.
It's been brought up in a few places recently (most notably in this ATT thread
) that we have a few tropes / Audience Reactions / etc. that have mandatory waiting periods before being added. The suggestion has been made— which I tend to agree with— that some sort of index to keep track of which tropes have waiting periods and what those periods are would be helpful.
Besides what's already on the index, we've got:
- Specific Mandatory Waiting Period Suggested:
- Critical Dissonance - Brought up here
as being too early to call on release weekend. Fighteer suggests a one-month mandatory waiting period on all similar "reception tropes."
- Overshadowed by Controversy - a 6-month mandatory waiting period has been suggested
but not agreed upon yet
- The Scrappy - Due to its close association with Base-Breaking Character and its status as a complaining magnet, has been suggested for a 6-month waiting period in this thread.
- Critical Dissonance - Brought up here
- No specific waiting period has been suggested, but adding it too early has caused problems:
- Eight Deadly Words - It was suggested here
that the below should apply to this as well
- So Bad, It's Good - Fighteer noted here
that the weekend of release was too early to apply tropes like these
- So Okay, It's Average - see above
- Eight Deadly Words - It was suggested here
Template tag for work pages:
%% Per Administrivia/NoRecentExamplesPlease, do not add [Trope] until [X] months/days/weeks after the episode's release (Month Date, Year).
Use this date calculator
to add the amount of months/days/weeks in accordance to No Recent Examples, Please!.
- As mentioned here
, the consensus is that NREP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.

Should we add So Bad, It's Horrible since it already encourages waiting for reception to settle before adding an example?
Peace is the only battle worth waging.SBIH is already officially NREP; it has a one month waiting time.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.I think that could work. Like documentary examples focusing on how events are presented in a narrative.
Honestly, I find a lot of prematurely added examples have decent structure and can be stored as writeups while not yet being on the pages themselves until the date's passed. So I made a sandbox just to store them until the date has passed: "No Recent Examples, Please!" Potential Writeups Storage.
Mostly keeping the ones with a lot of context. I marked the date when they can finally get put but before doing so, make sure it's still relevant and the general consensus is still in agreement with the writeup. If it changed, then the writeup can be rewritten before getting added back.

If living people must be included, then I would prohibit examples within the past 25 years, also for ROCEJ reasons.
is there any specific clause in ROCEJ that requires an exact limit? i dont think 'patent troll gets thrown out of court' or 'literally holds the world record for frivolous lawsuits' would breach ROCEJ
i may be dead inside but at least i have Mystery :,)Bumping regarding the issue of Award Snub, should a 1-month time limit be considered for it to prevent knee-jerk reactions?
Eh, good enough.A month after the winner is announced seems about right, because it's enough time to prevent those reactions.
(Wording is deliberate, because "Work X wasn't nominated" is highly subject to complaining itself, and forcing it to wait until the same point as "Work X was nominated but lost" avoids most of that.)
2025: the year it all ends?I think that'd be for the best. A lot of Award Snub entries seem knee-jerk and I think some fans mellow out more once they see the work that actually won and go "Eh, that's fair."
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.
and ![]()
Agreed. It gives plenty of time to assess the merits of a work rather than making knee-jerk complaints.
Agreed on a month waiting period for Award Snub.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadI am sorry if this has already been brought up but should And You Thought It Would Fail have a one week or month waiting period. I am not actually sure but just thought I would ask.
Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadHmmm, I feel like it's easier to prove success (or just not-failure) than failure, but maybe one week would be enough to account for an opening weekend.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.Should Hype Backlash have a brief waiting period of maybe a month? I noticed one of the new Doctor Who specials (YMMV.Doctor Who60th AS Wild Blue Yonder) had an entry added the day after it was broadcast, which seems a bit quick.
I think so. A day isn't really long enough to build a hype and then backlash. A month waiting period sounds like a good idea.
I dunno about a month, but I think two or three weeks after the media in question is released/finished could work for Hype Backlash.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."I mean two weeks too short to me. 1 month aka 4 weeks leads to enough time for the hype to build and get widespread enough to lead to the backlash to also build and get widespread enough, along with making sure that the backlash lasts long enough to know that it is not just a small moment of a few making noise about being over the hype.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadIs the limit for Character Perception Evolution five years since the series began, five years since opinions began to shift, or five years since the series ended? There are ongoing examples on the page so I assume it's the second option. Asking because I think Todd from BoJack Horseman might count, but the series only ended in 2020. I think Todd's shift into Base-Breaking Character mode might be old enough, however, as it started around season 4 or 5 (Season 4 was in late 2017, Season 5 in late 2018).
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe. It is five years since the changed happened I believe.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadI have been thinking. Should Memetic Mutation have a one week waiting period after the meme begins? Just so we can make sure it mutates. I think a week is a reasonable time for a meme to catch on but not too long as to be unfair. Because sometimes people will add something because a few people said it and then a week later the "meme" is nowhere to be seen.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup thread
Crown Description:
These are pages where it has been proposed to limit some or all examples (e.g. all Real Life examples) to those before a certain point in time, usually for reasons of the Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgment or recency bias. Please discuss tropes in the thread before adding them; entries added without discussion are subject to deletion. Proposed time limits may be over a rolling period (e.g. "no examples from the past 6 months") or a fixed point in time (e.g. "no examples after 1975"). Vote UP to agree with a proposed change; vote DOWN to disagree. If an item has a (CLOSED) on it, there is no need to vote on it; the result has already been decided, meeting the following requirements:- They have ten or more total votes,
- have been on the crowner for at least a week, measured from when the addition of the new crowner entry is announced in a thread post,
- and are stable with at least a 2:1 vote ratio.

Ten years is too recent for Frivolous Lawsuit for currently living people filing lawsuits.
However, I have no problems with examples that are at least 10 years old as long as those who filed the lawsuit are currently deceased for ROCEJ reasons.
If living people must be included, then I would prohibit examples within the past 25 years, also for ROCEJ reasons.
