Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

Template for the unreleased work comment
%%
%% Speculative troping is not allowed on TV Tropes.
%%
%% We trope what DOES happen in works, not what MIGHT happen or is LIKELY to happen.
%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.

In the official Volume 8 trailer for RWBY, Jaune suggests that they split the party up into two after Ren and Ruby reach an impasse on what to do. Does this fit as an example of Let's Split Up, Gang!? Also, would Yang's eyes widening in shock before cutting to the Grimm's assault on Mantle count as an Oh, Crap! moment?

Just created a page for the upcoming series Big Sky, which premiers November 17, 2020.

All tropes from the trailers. Would appreciate a fresh pair of eyes to make sure I didn't miss anything.

[up][up] Let's Split Up, Gang! could maybe count as a discussed(?) trope. Can't tell if they actually do end up splitting up. Similarly, can't tell if Oh, Crap! actually applies. She may be reacting to something else entirely.

This is my first time so forgive me if I'm a little unfamiliar with how things work here.

Some time ago, Nippon Ichi released a trailer for the sixth game in the Disgaea series Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny with a release date as well as some other supplemental information. Naturally, a work page went up with tropes pertaining to what has been released thus far. However, the entire list of tropes had been hidden due to Speculative troping. As far as I saw, the tropes listed on the page seemed to be following the guidelines, but perhaps I'm not entirely familiar with the pre-release guidelines so maybe they just need tweaking. The tropes listed below were the ones hidden. I'd gladly appreciate any advice to fix that page as well as any other examples that can be added:

  • Absurdly High Level Cap: While this trope has been a series staple since its inception, 6 takes it to its (il)logical extreme with a level cap of 99,999,999!
  • Ascended Extra:
    • After being demoted to a visual gag in 5, the original Dragon class is playable again and is one of the first classes to be shown in the reveal trailer.
    • The Disgaea 1 trio are once again available in the base game after being demoted to DLC in 5.
  • Came Back Strong: Zed comes back stronger every time he dies by using Super Reincarnation
  • Video Game 3D Leap: After six games of utilizing Sprite/Polygon Mix, Disgaea 6 becomes the first game in the Disgaea series to make the full leap to 3D note , replacing the HD 2D-sprites that were introduced in Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten with 3D polygon character models.

All of them were hidden because none of them cite a source, like a trailer.

[up][up] Also, I'm in a strange situation about what to do with troping the volume 8 trailer, since the RWBY pages have a notice that we should not trope episodes that have been released for First Members until the week after (the first episode will premiere for First Members on November 7).

What is the best possible way to achieve this? Should we trope the trailers for now?

I don't see the issue, since the trailer is (a) not an episode, and (b) publicly available, rendering the First membership irrelevant.

Has an episode of volume 8 already come out? If not, then just trope the trailer per normal. If it has, don't trope the episode page itself until the episode is available.

Wyldchyld raised his thoughts about potentially troping the RWBY trailers not too long ago on the RWBY thread when I asked about:

I know the situation on the wiki is that trailers can be troped but only if it's made absolutely clear that the trope pertains to the trailer, but I honestly think it's crazy to do that for works known to favour Never Trust a Trailer. All it does is trigger a raft of premature troping that increases the amount of clean-up that has to be done at a later date.

It's how misuse happens. It seems eminently more sensible to just hold off troping until the work begins airing properly, and it creates far less work in the long run to do so.

However, when I brought it up on the policy feedback page here, crazysamaritan noted:

We can trope marketing and never worry about being wrong, so long as we make the example about the marketing.

Any thoughts?

I'm with crazysamaritan. Trope the trailer, and specify it's the trailer, and there should be no issue, even if the episode later contradicts the trailer.

I wasn't aware anyone had brought a quote of mine from elsewhere, so allow me to clarify the context.

My post was based on the fact that we were discussing at the time a fandom that is prone to desperately troping everything it can, the second it comes out, even if there's no context to help trope what's happening accurately. That is what I was talking about when discussing the problem of constantly cleaning up.

For example, the trailer for Volume 2 drove the fandom crazy because it depicted Ruby holding Weiss in a Pietà Plagiarism cradling as she screams. Cue the fandom interpreting that as character death and seeking to trope it that way.

It was a Food Fight. The company had deliberately airbrushed out all the signs of a food fight to make it look as serious and dramatic as possible. Weiss wasn't dead, she wasn't even unconscious. She and Ruby were just hamming it up. So, while Big "NO!" and Pietà Plagiarism could be picked up from the trailer, the context turned out to be completely wrong.

Crazysamaritan's point about troping marketing isn't my problem and it's not what I was referring to. If people want to trope in that manner, I don't see the issue. However, look just a few posts further up the thread to where gjjones has linked the current Volume 8 trailer and asked if Let's Split Up, Gang! and Oh, Crap! can be troped from that trailer. Twiddler's already pointed out the context problem there.

That is the problem my post was talking about.

[up] Indeed.

Basically, I’m trying to figure out which tropes would be appropriate for the trailer itself until the season (or volume) premieres. However, some of the tropes I proposed, like the Oh, Crap! and Let's Split Up, Gang! ones above, are unclear.

If the scenes from the trailer do show up in the episode itself, we can remove the "In the trailer for [season]..." text from the example(s) and switch it to the more appropriate text (such as "In the [season] episode...").

I still think that just pointlessly creates extra work for us when we could just wait a couple of weeks and then put in a single correct entry.

However, I can see that troping this trailer clearly matters a lot to you, so I suggest we use the RWBY forum thread to figure out which tropes do apply and run anything we're not sure of through this thread, rather than hogging this thread any more than we need to. Would that be okay?

On YMMV.Monster Hunter Rise there is this AST entry:

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • One for Nintendo Switch owners who were unhappy with Monster Hunter: World not being on Switch and only getting a localization of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, despite Tri and 4 being Nintendo exclusives. For other players, after Generations Ultimate played much more like older games, World players became quite spoiled by World's much more seamless moment-to-moment gameplay.
    • Monster Hunter: World was well received, but once the "honeymoon period" wore off, people became a little tired with World's roster containing almost nothing but Wyverns (prior to its Iceborne expansion, anyway). One of the first trailers of Rise shows off an Amphibian monster named Tetranadon, the return of Arzuros, and a new Temnoceran, which implied that there would be more monster classes.
      • In general, Rise 's return to form is seen as this by long-time fans who feared that Capcom would stick to World 's design philosophy 100% moving forward. Rise has what many perceive to be the perfect mixture of World's QoL changes and gameplay mechanics along with earlier MH titles' brighter color palettes, "arena" styled maps and "minute" additions such as monsters once again bleeding from melee strikes.
    • Fans of the AI-controlled companions often get disappointed the moment a third player steps into an online lobby, as companions can only be brought on 1- and 2-player hunts. Rise now allows each player to bring one companion on 3- and 4-player hunts as well.

The game will not be released until 2021. Given the recent questioning on ATT about AST's timing restrictions, I think no one will object to to me pruning the entry under the Speculative Troping ruling?
