Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

Template for the unreleased work comment
%%
%% Speculative troping is not allowed on TV Tropes.
%%
%% We trope what DOES happen in works, not what MIGHT happen or is LIKELY to happen.
%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.

[up] Um, dude, I'm not sure what's eating your shorts, but the rules here are simple and straightforward. If a work hasn't been released yet:

  • Examples based on speculation are not permitted.
  • Examples must state the source (trailer, gameplay footage, demo, etc.).

Regardless, all existing example rules must be followed, such as having adequate context and not relying on external links.

People fixing what you're doing is not edit warring, unless you are reverting it, in which case you are committing the edit war. Now get off your high horse, take a Ritalin, and work with us.

So I added context and links to what was revealed to the press and otherwise. For example, IGN got permission to put up the first fifteen minutes of the game (and two days before the pre-order beta), so right now I'm treating the first fifteen minutes as officially confirmed by Ubisoft to remain unchanged until release.

  • Ink-Suit Actor restored with the reference to live-action trailer (Ubisoft's YT channel also has a featurette of Bernthal talking about his preparations for the role, but that's less important).
  • Badass Beard restored, limited to Nomad's default model as it's an example of the "Operator Beard" mentioned in the trope examples, and Nomad is very much operatoring operationally in the trailers.
  • Character Customization described in-depth as of the pre-order beta, with a link to a beta video serving as a clarification to the rather lengthy description.
  • Attack Drone restored. Every trailer but the live-action one features them heavily, so I included a general reference to them.
  • Same for Faceless Goons, they're featured in the trailers as well so that's what's referred to.
  • Gatling Good is everywhere in the trailers, so that's what's referred to.
  • Guttural Growler now points to specific examples in trailers.
  • Rogue Agent provided with a reference to the live-action trailer, quote included.
  • Villain Opening Scene restored with a reference to IGN's video.

I've decided to hold off with the more controversial and unclear things tied to whatever the beta revealed, mainly Mads and Sentinel as a faction, as nothing that can be readily cited shows much of it.

I'm waiting for the Trivia page as the game has a case of The Other Darrin for Nomad (both male and female voice actors for the characters were replaced).

Before I ultimately and irrevocably lose it, could you please look at the Guttural Growler and Badass Longcoat trope pages, particularly the video game sections of both, and tell me if I'm right that about two thirds of them are zero context examples?

Just to preserve my sanity. Because to be entirely honest, I have no idea how to describe both of them on the Breakpoint page to be meaningful, aside from the fact that Jon Bernthal once again growls whenever he's angry, like in The Punisher, and Alex Mallari gargles gravel even more than he did in Dark Matter.

[up] Without needing to look at the pages, I am virtually certain that you're right about the relative number of ZCEs on them. The "Badass" tropes in particular are ZCE magnets due to being generally underdefined and of questionable tropeworthiness, and there is a cleanup thread that is slowly but steadily going through them.

"There are lots of ZCEs other places that haven't been cleaned up yet!" is a poor reason for adding to the problem, however.

Jon Bernthal once again growls whenever he's angry, like in The Punisher, and Alex Mallari gargles gravel even more than he did in Dark Matter.

If you were to actually write that in the example text, that would be better than what is there now, which is:

This is the classic Zero-Context Example that says when the trope ostensibly happens, but not what happens and how, which are far more important.

As a general rule of thumb, if the entry text would make exactly as much sense attached to a different randomly-chosen trope to a reader unfamiliar with the work, then you probably don't have enough context.

  • Mr. Fixit: Both Nomad in the Reveal trailer and Walker when delivering his Badass Boast in the "We Are Wolves" trailer.

Huh. I guess this Walker guy really likes to boast about his mechanical skills. Who knew.

[up] It was more about not being able to find a working example to start from than an excuse, but yeah, I basically rephrased what I posted in this thread.

Along with describing the coats.

Troper Kersey 475 has taken it upon themselves to unhide every hidden entry on Film.Jojo Rabbit without alteration, plus adding a handful of new Zero Context Examples. I've sent them a notifier. Hollering for a moderator revert.

The page for the game Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was cut some time ago because it didn't have a release date. It does now and, at the recommendation of someone in the Ask the Tropers page, have made a preliminary page in the Wiki Sandbox. If anyone would care to help and contribute, that would be great. :)

As the sandbox will inevitably be changed in the future, [up] is:

    Test: Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fed15dda731aa2e48aebf986c1efa877.jpg

''This is the story of the mysterious Dragon Balls. A story about determination, despair, and hope. This is the story of Goku, the one they call "Kakarot".

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an upcoming Action-Adventure game by Bandai-Namco and CyberConnect2, slated for release in January 2020.

Kakarot follows the story of Dragon Ball Z in its entirety, from the Saiyan Saga through the Majin Saga. In addition to following the story and reenacting famous battles through the series, players will also be able to take advantage of wide-open areas to partake in various activities, such as side-quests based on filler episodes from the anime which also sees the return of many of Goku's oldest friends and foes, fishing, hunting, and eating to boost stats. Even though Goku is the titular character, he isn't the only playable one: as players progress through the game, they can party up with, or even take control of, Goku's fellow warriors, from Piccolo to Vegeta to Gohan.

Borderlands 3 has been released now, right? Does it mean that it will no longer be covered by this policy? And it means we could unhide tropes now, right?

[up] Yeah, now that the game has been released, it's safe to unhide the tropes as long as there aren't any ZCE. Hope this helps.

[up][up] You shouldn't just blindly remove all of the comment tags, but entries that 1.) actually apply to the final, released version of the game, and 2.) have sufficient context can be unhidden.

Entries that don't meet those two criteria should be edited or deleted.

Per Creating a Work Page for an Upcoming Work "These pages must have a confirmed release date not year, quarter, or month, but an exact date"

"Fall of 2020" isn't an exact release date so I don't think it's ok for now.

Hello, there was an example for Pokémon Sword and Shield that I thought could be added, any chance you could check it out and see if it works? I was redirected here from the locked page requests thread as the moderator who replied to me said they weren't convinced. If it helps, the trope page itself also lists this exact example though that one was added by someone else.

  • Ascended Glitch: On the official website for the game, a new Pokemon was added without announcement but wasn't listed with the rest of the new Pokemon, instead appearing as a pixelated image that darts across the screen a couple of times when moused over before allowing itself to be clicked, linking to the Pokemon's info page. Said info page contains the same pixelated image as well as garbled graphics replacing the name, category, height and several words in the description, complete with a graphical glitch animation - not at all unlike the glitch Pokemon from Pokémon Red and Blue which tend to have similarly glitchy data.

[up]I'm going to say I doubt it fits right now; for all we know, it could just be as a way to build hype with no relation to the glitch Pokemon whatsoever. I say wait and see before we add anything prematurely.
