Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

Template for the unreleased work comment
%%
%% Speculative troping is not allowed on TV Tropes.
%%
%% We trope what DOES happen in works, not what MIGHT happen or is LIKELY to happen.
%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.

Jojo Rabbit has only one properly-cited, non-speculative example and also hasn't been indexed.

[up] Couldn't you just watch the trailer, and then cite the proper examples? Watching it shouldn't take up too much time.

No Time to Die should be a (locked?) disambiguation page since more than one film exists with that title, the 1958 film being eligible for troping while the Bond movie isn't.

Yeesh. That page is a mess. It's four years' worth of people attempting to trope a work that doesn't actually exist yet based on creators' social media posts about what it will be like. Motion to cut.

Don't we still have that "grandfather clause" rule? If there haven't been any trailers I'd be down for cutting, but if there are we should at least try to salvage the page before tossing it.

[up][up] If you'd like to attempt to clean up the page and see if there's anything worth saving under the grandfather clause, go for it.

This is supposed to be a group effort, but okay:

Three good examples, so it can stay after a cleaning. I also discovered a clip from the pilot while looking at the trailer. Random Fan 11 seems to be the one who's added the most to the page, so I'm gonna PM them to come here.

[up][up] I count one valid example (Dem Bones). The others you list as "okay" all lack citation.

I'm still in favor of cutting, if no one cares to sort through and see which entries might be salvaged with citation.

Edit: Speaking of pages I'm in favor of cutting, Characters.Watchmen 2019 seems very premature considering it has no tropes on it, valid or otherwise.

So last weekend, from September 5th to September 9th, beta of Ghost Recon Breakpoint was available to people who preordered the game. Unsurprisingly, people decided to stream it on Twitch, and I spent upwards of eight hours on watching those streams (mainly in my native Polish). Now here's what's confirmed (and the sources):

  • A.K.A.-47: From what I saw, it's all over the place. FN F2000 is once again named SC-20K, fallout from whatever licensing kerfuffle happened back with the first Splinter Cell game, and the Springfield XDM pistol is called differently, with some three-letter acronym that doesn't contain either of the official names. There is a FN Five-Seven pistol, but I didn't pay attention to its ingame name.
  • Attack Drone: The beta clarifies what was shown in the trailers, with the exception of the Transforming Mecha feature. I haven't noticed that one.
  • Badass Beard: Visible on Nomad's default model in the trailers. In the beta, we also meet a local rebel leader, Mads Schulz, who sports a big-ass lumberjack beard.
  • Border Patrol: Aside from a glimpse of it bringing your helicopter down, the beta shows you a cutscene of the drone swarm tearing apart a boat with refugees escaping from the island after one of the storyline missions.
  • Character Customization: The system is similar to the one implemented in The Division. You can modify and paint your rifle, and select both active and cosmetic uniform/armor parts.
  • Cool Old Guy: Mads Schulz is an old cowboy kind of guy, complete with a hat and Southern drawl.
  • Covered in Mud: Featured in the trailers, confirmed in the beta. Better yet, it washes off if you go in the water.
  • Faceless Goons: that one's been featured in the trailers and indeed, the Wolves are Elite Mooks - they react really fast and are decked out in those creepy ballistic masks.
  • Gatling Good: Yeah, there are large mooks with miniguns, drones with miniguns and cars with miniguns, all of which were featured in the trailers. That's almost enough dakka.
  • Guttural Growler: Nomad's The Other Darrin now (Steve Byers has been replaced with Dark Matter's Alex Mallari Jr, the info's on IMDB), and Jon Bernthal growls as Walker in the live-action trailer.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Jesus Christ, Jon Bernthal playing Walker is advertised everywhere and the journos can't shut up about it. Who in their right mind edited that one out?!
  • Private Military Contractors: The basic mooks are Sentinel, the PMC company originally employed as the local security force.
  • Rogue Agent: I didn't even put that one there, it was already there when I came in. But still, the live-action trailer reveals that Walker went rogue, and that much is true (it appears as he somehow overthrew Skell and took over the islands).

Oh, I even found a complete playthrough of the storyline portion on YT: https://youtu.be/a-RNSo9sdso

[up] That's not a citation. Where does the page image come from?

HighCrate Since: Mar, 2015

[up][up][up]

If the tropes are present in the beta and/or trailers (which is what it sounds like), and the beta and trailers are all publicly available (which is also what it sounds like), then that's fine, but the entry text on the page itself needs to say that that's where they happen. Otherwise to the casual reader they appear to be referring to the final work, which logically they can't be, because the work isn't, well, final.

Edit: Not in a commented-out editors' note like you've done. In the entry text itself, viewable to any reader of the page. It's enough to say something like, "In the beta," and then move on to describe what happens in the beta (or trailer, or whatever), giving context as normal.

Many entries, like Badass Beard and Cool Old Guy, are also Zero Context Examples.

It seems bad form to use the image as the implied citation, since we actively discourage things like "see image above" in example-writing in general. Why not just explicitly say "in promotional artwork"?

Film.Jojo Rabbit was submitted to the cut list, but by the time I got to it today, it seems like at least one troper is trying to rehab it. Paging ~Fogsgse to see if they can add one more valid example.

[up][up][up][up][up] Look. Your pointless edit war is nonsense. Particularly the entries you commented out that were there before my edits.

And once again, the "exclusive beta" is nothing but a glorified demo slash stress test, as in case of Anthem. They'll hardly fix or change anything in the coming month.

  • Attack Drone is heavily featured in the trailers, I just removed the Transforming Mecha mention that is apparently a trailer-only bullshot.
  • Badass Beard is true for the trailers featuring Nomad. He's a gun-toting badass with a beard, surrounded by absolute Bayhem.
  • Character Customization has a link to a beta gameplay video that everyone can watch for themselves.
  • Covered in Mud was in the trailers, is in the beta and will be in the full version as a very basic game mechanic. That and it wasn't even me who added it in the first place.
  • Faceless Goons were added before I even started editing, they're heavily featured in the trailers, and in the beta as well.
  • Gatling Good is EVERYWHERE. Wasn't me who added it. It's in the trailers, it's in the beta, and I'm not expecting Ubisoft to go all hands on deck to change it to supersoakers over the next month.
  • Ink-Suit Actor - REALLY?! As in, after all the trailers, Live Action Trailer being the most triumphant example, there are ANY doubts as to Walker being based on Jon Bernthal?! It's not a Japanese game, they're not going to hastily replace the character model, re-record all the voiceover and delay the release because the Big Name Star was caught powdering their nose...
  • Rogue Agent - this entry was originally much broader with no real confirmation (or examples), so I narrowed it based on the Live Action Trailer.
