Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

Template for the unreleased work comment
%%
%% Speculative troping is not allowed on TV Tropes.
%%
%% We trope what DOES happen in works, not what MIGHT happen or is LIKELY to happen.
%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.
%%
%% If you have questions, please consult the Unreleased Work Speculation Cleanup thread at https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=15514631230A64268600

[up][up]As someone who hadn't seen the work, I wouldn't know whether it was in it or not so I wouldn't object. We assume good faith in other editors.

Of course, once someone who had seen the work removed it, I'd have a problem with your edit.

Edit: Was responding to an edited post, this no longer makes sense but keeping it around.

Can you say that there is a fundamental difference between "released a day early in one theater in Los Angeles" and "released a week early in one theater in Los Angeles?" Since the former is clearly allowed.

I don't know where you get the idea that the former is "clearly" allowed. That would also be Loophole Abuse and I would also be against it.

What is so urgent about this that you can't wait until literally anyone on this site has actually seen the film?

Precedent states that public release anywhere means it's fair game. We unlocked Spider-Man: Far From Home when it was released in China a few days before it came out in America.

I hope you will agree that there is a rather significant difference between the number of people in China and the number of people in one theater in LA.

Seconding Irene's link; we could always use some more input over there. And for the record, Crossover-Enthusiast brought the preview-screening question up there first and the small consensus we had seemed to lean against troping previews.

[up]It was literally three posts in the middle of a thread, that's not consensus on anything.

Seriously, if you want to debate this, head over there. I have no desire to engage in circular arguments with the same three people again.

Exactly why I brought up the link. There's no consensus. Incidentally that's the exact issue we're discussing right now.

Okay, "consensus" was the wrong word. I just wanted to point out that he did run things by people first, and the feedback given pointed towards "don't trope that yet".

To be fair, I am actually a young nerd.

Anyway, regarding the warning that kicked this whole thing off, it's the exact reason I asked if we had a consensus. Since there's only like 5-10 people here anyway, I thought four (myself included) saying "they shouldn't be troped" was enough. Obviously I was wrong, heh.

[up]Yeah, I'm the one who put the warning here in the first place, so sorry 'bout that.

So, I guess that TV Tropes will not be safe for those trying to remain blind about movie spoilers from Aug 26th onward?

My Hero Academia: Heroes: Rising is a stub that only had a speculative example. There's a 30 seconds trailer but I'm not sure if that's enough.

There definitely isn't enough material for Heroes Rising to have a page yet. That trailer barely has any tropes in it.

I'm not sure if this necessarily falls into the purview of this thread, but I figure it's as good a starting point as any. If not just say the word and I'll hit up Ask The Tropers.

The developers of Dead by Daylight today announced their next DLC, which will introduce three characters from Stranger Things into the roster of Killers and Survivors. Someone already created folders and such on Characters.Dead By Daylight. I initially deleted them because, given the announcement was literally today, we didn't have anything besides which characters they were, the month, but not day, they were set for release, and about five-ish Zero Context Examples for tropes. In my edit reason I suggested waiting until we're at least in Public Testing so we'd have stuff to actually trope.

A second user re-added the folders, but only the folders. Nothing else in them. I'm not sure this is kosher. There's nothing in the folders, but it does work off of publicly available/announced info. Since removing the folders again would start an edit war on my part, I wanted to ask if it's an issue to leave them there or if I absolutely should remove them.

Characters need tropes to be listed on a Characters page. If no one can come up with a trope to put under them, they probably don't need to be on the page.

Announced DLC for a released work doesn't fall under the policy, but characters need tropes to be added.

Unless there's some publicly-released tropable material that I don't know about, there doesn't seem to be much else to do with it.

No Time to Die has been launched but all we have now is a title and a short behind the scene video

and the Mythology Gag examples appear to be speculative

  • Mythology Gag: A significant portion of the film, the 25th in the series, will take place in Jamaica, well known as the setting for the first film, Dr. No, as well as several of the books, and as the second home of author Ian Fleming.
    • Additionally, there was to be a cameo by Grace Jones (it's unclear if it was to be a Continuity Nod to A View to a Kill as well), but she quit within minutes upon seeing how small her part was.
    • For the third time, there will be a female OO-agent. However, unlike the brief, non-speaking appearances in Thunderball and The World is Not Enough, this one will have a larger role—she is the new OO7! (This is also undoubtedly a reference to the numerous fans who have clamored for a female or black actor to take the role).

Still feels like jumping the gun to me. We know the title and release date, sure, but very little else (and it's word of god).

Yeah, I'm inclined to motion to cut until / unless we get something more substantial like an actual trailer.

If someone thinks they can glean three valid trope entries from that teaser / BTS music video... thing... I guess they can try, but what's on the page right now is pretty bad.

Troper ~number9robotic added the following to VideoGame.Death Stranding:

  • Event Title: The game is named after the In-Universe event known as "the Death Stranding". The game itself takes place after this Stranding occurred.
  • Video Game Caring Potential: If something happens that puts the Bridge Baby under stress and start crying, Sam can take a moment to gently rock its incubator and play a lullaby to soothe it.

I commented them out for lacking citation. They restored them with the edit reason, "The event is directly called "The Death Stranding" in-universe in the Heartman trailer. The Video Game Caring Potential entry is based on Kojima's direct word in the Gamescom 2019 presentation."

The Event Title entry could probably be salvaged with proper citation in the entry text itself; citation in an edit reason isn't enough, since it's not visible to a casual troper.

If the only source for Video Game Caring Potential is Word of God, then the trope hasn't actually happened yet. "Word of God says that the trope will happen" is not context. It should stay deleted until/unless the trope actually happens in material to which the public has access.

Have you told the tropes themself this? Or reported them in Ask The Tropers for edit warring?
