Rebecca Dart is returning for G5.

I think G5 might actually be good.

Is it this one?

That's quite the cover image she got there.

It's cool that the character designer's returning but I'm holding out for writers, producers, and directors. That's what will really give you an impression of how good this will be.

According to the IMDB page, right now we have:

  • Producer: Cecil Kramer. best known for Flushed Away and Watership Down.
  • Producer: Peter Lewis. Lot of producer credits but the most relevant one is G4's Pony Life. He also produced the Rainbow Roadtrip special.
  • Director: Robert Cullen. Best known for directing Transformers: Cyberverse, Danger Mouse, and El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera.
  • Director: Jose Luis Ucha. Best known for directing Invizimals, Sunday Pants, and the Secret Life of Suckers.
  • Co-Director: Mark Fattibene. No previous directing experience.

I'm rather alarmed by the fact that there isn't a single woman involved with the production or direction of this film. Going down the list of credits, women seem to be a stark minority.

But we don't have any writers yet. The only writer credit they have is Lauren Faust, and she's only listed as "Based on characters by". As in, they're obligated to credit her because she created the G4 characters that the film will be referencing.

Watership down? Man, that would be a very different show...

Actually, a PG parody of Watership down with Angel does sound fun.

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera.

[up][up][up] I'm mean, this is going into another extreme but I was a bit tired of all those shows that were proudly announcing that their writing staff was all-female or didn't have a single white male or whatever as if that guaranteed quality. If next Transformers or G.I. Joe were written by women would that be a reason to alarm?

[up][up]It's a field, as many fields, where women often struggle for relevance and representation in the first place, with a product that should be a slam dunk for them as it is primarily meant for girls.

If a woman spearheaded a Transformers show, I'd be surprised for sure.

Nicole Dubuc did co-create Transformers: Rescue Bots and Transformers: Rescue Bots Academy , though she worked with her husband on both shows. I think she's the only woman to at least co-create a Transformers show.

Good for her. I've always liked Dubuc's work on MLP. I used to joke that every writer has their own unique signature quirks with their storytelling, and Dubuc's is that she's actually watched this show before. Her episodes often made Continuity Nods and references to other episodes. That alone wasn't unique to her, but the fact that these references were generally accurate is what caught my attention.

A writer that's actually a fan and active watcher of the show they're writing for? Fantastic! No fake fan engagement for her, then.

Eh, still having my own doubts on that.
Yeah, that's definitely not going to happen.
They literally said that it was set in the future of the FiM universe because they want to use FiM's lore. There's literally no reason to doubt that what they've said is true.

I'm a bit curious as to what role Hitch will play in G5. He's advertised as the "first main male MLP character", so that makes me hopeful that he'll be treated as equal to the female characters. But I have a feeling that he'll either be the Spike of G5, or just a token male character.

What do you think?

Doubtful. Hitch strikes me as testing the waters. Hasbro struck unexpected success with male viewers in G4. I'm not surprised that they're now experimenting with the market viability of male ponies.

If he's being advertised as the first main male character I expect him to be just as important as the female characters, yeah.

Having the previous be legends and figures from the past would essentially be the best way to go about things. I think having a mythos about each of the six virtues and how the citizens go about living or being invested in that tenant would be an interesting subplot during the run of the show.

Hitch isn't a dragon so he'll most likely be just as important.

They could try with Spike but in the end, it was like expecting April to be as important as Ninja Turtles.

In fact, so far Zipp and Pipp seem to be slightly less important.

Side note, interesting that after all this unicorn supremacy, this show will have only one and not even in the main role.

Maybe another unicorn will join later but they will have to reform first and it will take time?

IIRC, magic having left Equestria is supposed to be a plot point. If magic is gone, then unicorns being the unofficial "best race" is something that would take a dramatic nosedive. Magic is their whole thing.

Pegasus flight and earth pony strength seem like things that would matter much more than unicorn... horn sharpies in a post-magic Equestria.

Of course, elephant in the room, if magic is actually gone then the whole cosmology of Equestria shouldn't function. Magic literally makes the sun rise and set.

Of course Pegasus Flight and EP Strength are ALSO magic, but I doubt the writers will remember that.

Yeah, as I recall Tirek's magic-stealing rampage explicitly grounded the pegasi and made the earth ponies weak and puny in addition to taking away unicorn spellcasting.

Of course, whether this will be reflected in the new series is another question altogether.
