The Encounter that ended the Dogma
OTOH we have the Cake twins, a Unicorn and Pegasus pair born to an Earth Pony couple.
Cadance used to be a pegasus, so her descendants, watering down her alicorn blood to being pegasii makes just enough sense.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.kind of weird, but I always thought it would be cool if Sunset shimmer was a character in the show, not just relegated to the movies. It just seemed to me that she had a lot of potential from the little backstory she had and I really liked her character design.
Bide your time, and Hold out Hope — GANKUTSUOU Just because it's irrational, doesn't mean it's not real.On the one hand, Sunset might have run into a problem if she became a recurring character in the show. After her rainbow lobotomy overhauled her personality, she basically became EQG's Twilight. I'm not sure what she would bring to the table as a Mane Six character.
On the other hand, having Sunset join the Mane Six instead of chilling with AU cardboard cutouts of the characters might have either a) prevented her personality from being erased wholesale and replaced with Twilight's or b) given her the opportunity to develop a new personality distinct from her original or Twilight's.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.It seems pretty clear to me that they wanted to keep EG and FIM separate as much as possible. Not exactly sure why, beyond the basic "don't want to confuse fans of FIM who haven't watched EG."
I'm curious how people here would have done Sunset's personality, if she had to grow along Twilight instead of slotting into her role. Most fanfic I've seen goes with her being The Atoner and following in Twilight's footsteps because she thinks it's the best way to lead, but I've seen a few others. Biggest divergence is probably "she's actually still a giant bitch, but she's good at aiming it at the bad guys."
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff. The idea that they just didn't want to confuse anyone who didn't watch the movie was taken out back and shot in season eight, when the events of My Little Pony: The Movie became a plot-critical fulcrum around which the entire direction of the show swiveled.
They spent a bit of an episode catching kids up on the important bits they needed to know in order to understand this new direction and that was that. Which is exactly what they could have done with Sunset Shimmer.
That. I want that. There's a reason I cite Trixie as the best recurring ex-antagonist.

Trixie may have been one of Starlight's friends, but she is still a pretty big jerk throughout her time in the series. She's a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, yes, but still a jerk. Hopefully since she's the school's guidance counselor, she mellowed out with age.
Her standing up for Gallus is a good sign she was becoming a more empathetic individual.

Different writers and prerogatives by then though.
What if in G5, Spike became a recluse?
Then it's revealed that Twilight started Twilighting when racial tensions started to come back, and her solutions only made things worse. Spike, seeing how bad things were, decides to resign as Royal Advisor and second in command. Twilight, in her anxiety, accuses Spike of treason and declares him an enemy of the state, forcing Spike to go on the run and flee to the far reaches of Equestria.
Sometime after, Twilight dies, and Spike was never able to make amends with her.
Or would that be too sad?
That's a bit unnecessarily grimdark, yeah.
