Oh Dang.
I've heard someone say that making this film R was a mistake as well.
An r rating isn't really associated with the birds of prey and by making it r. They more or less remove any of the younger teenage audience who would be most likely to see it.
Though man DC can't catch a break. Their films either flop/bomb or make oddles of cash.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Thing is I didn't think the trailers were bad. As a fan of the material it was odd seeing Birds of Prey starring Harley Quinn (and barring Harley, none of the characters really look like their comic book versions), but from a layperson it looked funny with some slick visuals and the right amount of insanity.
Really, maybe the negative reception to Suicide Squad leaked over to this film even with Margot Robbie's star power.
Someone worked this out on reddit. Basically the Opening box office weekend
◊ has been decreasing since bvs and every film since then.
BVS, Justice league and suicide squad left a bad taste in the audiences mouths that has meant that those films will often succed in spite of being part of the dceu not because of being part of it.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."I think he was referring to Japan's much more stringent gun laws, which makes most gangs rely more on blunt and bladed weaponry moreso than gunfire. Now by my reckoning they don't use katanas all that often, but they do use a lot of baseball bats, hammers and batons.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."![]()
Yeah that's what I mean.
The very strict gun laws means most yakuza grunts have to make do with either their fists or whatever makeshift weapons they can get their hands on like knives, pipes, or even wooden swords.
While only the bosses around at Black Mask's level can actually carry guns.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I just got back from it and I love it. I haven’t enjoyed fistfight action sequences like that in a while, and I loved all the characters - all of them were really well set up and super likeable. In fact, it’s one of the more we’ll balanced ensemble action movies I’ve seen in ages, and it’s a delight.
I really liked Harley’s perspective of the unfolding situation. It has the tone of a character focus book, showing the whole world of Gotham from a different perspective, balancing both character and overall setting.
I would’ve preferred for Cassandra to end up with the Birds than Harley, but other than that it ended well.
Loved it too. I do have minor gripes, like how jarring it is to see Canary use a superpower at the end when the rest of the film was relatively grounded or the men being hit by a severe Mook Chivalry syndrome but it took Harley in an interesting direction without letting us forget that she's… not exactly a nice girl. Although damn, it's easy to forget she doesn't have superpowers considering how much abuse her frail body can take.
A true artist he is.
Speaking of which, some might have asked this already but… where the hell is the Joker in this film? It's like he magically disappeared the second Harley ditched him. I get that they didn't want to have him involved in this particular story, but it seems strange that he never appears except in the opening animation and that he'd just let another mafia boss take over Gotham. Did Jared Leto sign up for only one movie?

Birds of Prey made $33.3 million at the box office, enough to beat Bad Boys at the Box Office, but the lowest BO opening for a DC movie since
Jonah Hex.
The most immediate comparison for a February R-rated release, Deadpool, made $99 million more. Fault seems to be placed firmly on bad marketing, as well as the fact that it created a divide between fans of the BOP and Batgirl against fans of Harley, and the feeling Harley is being a bit played out as a lead.
