Really? Because I feel like there were several well-received Japanese games around that time period. The Dark Souls games, Fire Emblem Awakening, Kid Icarus: Uprising, the Etrian Odyssey games, Super Mario 3D Land, just to name a few.
Unless there's some metric being used that I'm not aware of?

The Latter are handhelds, and Dark souls isn't considered very Japanese by a few people.
Its why Code Vein is called Weeb Souls despite Dark Souls already being made by a Japanese dev.
I mean, I will point out your post said:
Nowhere does it say there that handheld games don't count as Japanese gaming, and the idea that Japanese handheld games don't count as Japanese gaming is baffling to me. As for Dark Souls, it is still a Japanese game, no matter what those few people think.

Not gonna lie, with this game and Persona 5 Scramble, part of me wants to see Platinum do a take on the Persona series.
Jumping into Astral Chain. Any beginner tips?
If you are used to playing Bayonetta or any other Platinum Games that have the dodge mapped to the shoulder buttons, and simply cannot kick the habit from the default controls, I would suggesting choosing Control Style C under the Options menu.
Also you might want to keep the "Track enemy during combat" option to ON, too. It can get especially hectic when fighting multiple chimera.
Learn to pull out your Legion/Cancel it the moment you see the Limiter meter reach 5 units or less. It's better to not fully expend your Limiter Guage as it locks you out from certain options, including the incredbly handy Chain Counter ("clothesline").

The game is #1 in the UK.
Yes more success to Platinum.
I eagerly await the sequel even though I haven't finished the game yet just to see what new Legion they can come up with.
Was just able to play the game for a bit. Couldn't do it before now since the TV room was a huge mess and I refuse to play this in handheld mode.
The controls keep throwing me off (e.g. why is ZR the attack button by default?) but it's really fun. 30fps isn't really a big deal either. Can't wait to do crazy shit with the Legion.

If the controls keep throwing you off (I know it did for me, too), then try Control Type C or D. It's in the Options menu.
Make sure the redo the Training Room sections to get reaquainted once you switch control methods. Some buttons have been switched around.
Crazy shit happens after the end of File 03/Chapter 3. You and your Legion's combat options get unlocked and combos now become a thing.

The controls are actually pretty clever. The Z buttons are the biggest and easiest to use so they'd be the actions you do the most of. The Legion usually is summoned just to your left so of course the button for the Legion is on the left.
Simplifying the controls down to three buttons (attack, legion attack, and dodge) also makes the game easier. Instead of memorizing combos, you memorize techniques.
I havenít been able to find an answer to my most stupid of questions: I know the FPC can get pants and/or tights, but can MPC get short shorts?
I haven't even been able to find many outfits in general.
Just out of curiosity, is anyone else really bothered by how utterly characterless the PC is? I almost put a box over his head just to have something better to look at but that turned out the be redundant.
I kinda was, but I do like that it puts more emphasis on your sib. Very interesting that they end up the Dante to your Nero, more or less up to the ending.
I did a short review on this game if anyone is interested:
Finished the game. Noah Prime was a bastard and I had to restart the chapter to get more battery charges so I could kind of squeak by.
Overall, great game, but can someone talk to the developers and tell them that 'Peace' is a really annoying chapter? I like the quiet investigative beats in this game. I don't like maddening mini-games and fucking block-moving puzzles.
I ended up liking a lot of Astral Chain's non-action bits, but God, that file was hell.
...i liked the block puzzles >.>
Do you mean the traffic puzzles?
i was really bad at the last one but i got it after about an hour or so
I just cheated through the whole thing.
It's a breather chapter before the finale kicks off. Ironically I felt like I did more fighting in that chapter than just about any other, juat because the pacing was so totally under my control.
I had been playing for a while so maybe my mood was a little off, but the way they handled some of the clean-up puzzles in that whole part just kind of annoyed me. The stuff where you're fighting and doing side missions is fine. I think it was mainly just the traffic and the box carrying (especially since the side-to-side gyro controls aren't very responsive on a pro controller).

I think itís fair to say that last traffic clearing puzzle deserves a That One Puzzle wick. If only I knew how to word it...
