Hulu’s announced a slew of adult toons based on Marvel characters!

They are:

  • Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. centers around an egomaniacal supervillain with a really big head and a really little body, who struggles to maintain control of his evil organization and his demanding family. Writers Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt will also executive produce along with Jeph Loeb.
  • Marvel’s Hit-Monkey tells the tale of a wronged Japanese snow monkey, mentored by the ghost of an American assassin, as he cuts a wide swath through the Tokyo underworld in this darkly cinematic and brutally funny revenge saga. Writers Josh Gordon and Will Speck will executive produce along with Jeph Loeb.
  • Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show is a story about two woke superheroes and best friends, Tigra and Dazzler, as they fight for recognition among powered people who make up the eight million stories in Los Angeles. Writers Erica Rivinoja and Chelsea Handler serve as executive producers along with Jeph Loeb.
  • Marvel’s Howard The Duck is trapped in a world he never made, but America’s favorite fighting fowl hopes to return home with the help of his unstoppable gal pal Beverly before the evil Dr. Bong can turn him the crispiest dish on the menu. Writers Kevin Smith and Dave Willis will also executive produce along with Jeph Loeb.

And they’ll come together for:

  • Marvel’s The Offenders, is a story in which nobody asked them to — and we’d be better off if they didn’t — but MODOK, Dazzler, Tigra, Hit Monkey and Howard the Duck are all forced to team up in order to save the world and certain parts of the Universe. Jeph Loeb will executive produce.

Almost thought this was an MCU thing, which made me think "wait, isn’t Dazzler a mutant?" But then I found out it’s animated so...I don’t know.

EDIT: Kevin Smith + the creator of Aqua Teen Hunger Force + Howard the Duck = HOLY SHITSNACKS.

[up]This sounds like a giant middle finger towards Netflix and their cancellation of all their stuff.

No room to revive FX’s cancelled Deadpool, is there?

[up] Didn't think of it as a middle finger to Netflix, but then I realized Hulu will mostly be owned by Disney in a few months' time so maybe it IS a middle finger?

As for FX's Deadpool toon reincarnating as a Hulu original...maybe? Though we’d have to see how these shows work out. I’m particularly excited for Howard the Duck. I wonder if they’ll have any elements from the Chip Zdarsky series.

Tigra and Dazzler getting a show? Never thought I’d see the day.

We already got a first look at the leads!

Howard is looking a lot like how he did in the Zdarsky run...

I loved Zdarsky's Howard the Duck book, so i hope the show takes inspiration from it, in addition to the classic Gerber works of course.

And i dig that they're Teaming up Tigra and Dazzler. It's an odd duo, but i can see it working.

And looks like Disney will use Hulu for their projects aimed at older viewers. So i guess the Disney streaming service will be mostly all ages.

Tigra looks like she escaped from planet Thundera and landed in LA.

I cannot think of a single thing she’s been in, while my main exposure to Dazzler was the X-Men arcade game and a review Linkara did.

Outside of comics? She was in that Avengers show from the 90s and in the Super Hero Squad & Lego Marvel games.

I think she might have been an NPC in the Ultimate Alliance games, but can't remember for sure.

[up] You forgot her appearance in X-Men TAS AND the X-Men Arcade Game.

Now for my thoughts: 1) MODOK: Fitting considering how the character is often (especially nowadays) the punchline of Marvel Universe. Its the reason why he is the star of their What The!?! series. Will watch.

2) Hit Monkey: Never really cared for the character. Especially seeing how he was a product of the Daniel Way era. Will not watch.

3) Tigra & Dazzler: Weird pairing of two characters, but certainly sounds like an interesting concept. Seems like a super heri equivalent of Broad City. Something tells me the description of that show triggered the fuck out of a certain section of Youtube and are now making 20 minute long video bitching about it. Will watch.

4) Howard the Du- WILL FUCKING WATCH! I’m already sold when they said Kevin Smitch and Dave Willis is working on it.

5) The Offenders: If the villain is Mojo than that would be the best. Possibly watch.

I'll watch all of them even if Howard the Duck is the only thing really drawing me to this. They'll all be on the same platform. Why not?

Tigra was in X-Men:TAS?

Doubt it. He's probably thinking about Feral - and even then she was just a recurring background mutant.

Tigra And Dazzler is having a complete creative overhaul. Everyone was let go from the series.

[up]Wow. That is...rare. The product they came up with must have been something extremely subpar for them to let everyone go.

I wonder if it has anything to do with Loeb leaving. Though the article said it's not.

[up]The way it sounds is that in the midst of the shakeup someone looked at the scripts and said no. It could be any number of things, similarities to the Harley Quinn show, being way too similar to failed programs (if it ended up being a Marvel equivalent of Tuca & Bertie I could see panicky executives pulling the plug post haste) or just wasn’t all that funny in test readings.

Tony Isabella, creator of Tigra (and Black Lightning) volunteered his services to Marvel to get his character to the small screen.

For the MODOK show anyway.

Is Jodie a new character? Since the only women i remember MODOK being into were Kate Waynesboro as Ms.MODOK, Maria Hill and Monica Rappaccini who just seems to be a rival in the show.

That's very unfortunate as I was really looking forward to those specific two shows. Currently, M.O.D.O.K and Hit-Monkey are still on track, but now "The Offenders" crossover series is retroactively in limbo considering half the roster is gone.

Alternatively, I suppose Tigra, Dazzler, and Howard could join up on either show as recurring characters.

Yeah, i did like the idea of teaming up two normally unrelated characters, mainly because it means they were doing something new.

I wonder why MODOK and Hit-Monkey were the ones they decided to stick with though.

Maybe they were further into production.

Dazzler and Tigra had problems in development so that's why probably they were canceled.

Guessing from premises alone, MODOK is wacky supervillain fun that can also answer to DC Harley Quinn and Hit-Monkey can have over-the-top action. Howard is more made for subdued satire.

There will be a 4 issue miniseries called MODOK: Head Games written by Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt. It comes out in December.

Patton Oswalt reaffirms that Marvel's M.O.D.O.K will still debut in early 2021.

t. “The episodes have been written. They’ve been recorded. Now they’re being animated. And because we committed very hard to the stop-motion aspect to it and we’re really packing every frame with crazy detail,” he says. “It’s looking like it’ll be early next year, but I don’t know the exact date yet.”

On that note, this is my first time reading that M.O.D.O.K will in stop-motion, animated by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios (Robot Chicken, Buddy Thunderstruck). It makes me wonder if this will be a spiritual successor to Marvel Super Heroes What The—-?!
