Have you ever wanted to put a known character in an otherwise original story, but didn't know if/how you could get away with it? We all know parody is fair game, but what about a regular old cameo (like, for example, the Toons in Who Censored Roger Rabbit? or all those eighties media properties in Ready Player One)? Can you make that happen without stepping on somebody's toes?
I want to put a surprise character cameo in an original story I'm writing, but I don't want to commit to it (and all that comes with it) if I'm just going to have to remove or change it later. I've worked it out so that the character appears in a maximum of two chapters, doesn't speak, and only has minor interactions with the original characters, but is mentioned by name and influences the plot. Is that doable? What precautions should I take? If anyone has any juicy info they can share, I sure would appreciate it.
