Today I saw the 2018 version of A Star Is Born.

A Star is Born was a 2018 Best Picture nominee just as the original was a 1937 Best Picture Nominee.

The new version won the 2018 Song Oscar for "Shallow" just as the 3rd version won the 1976 Song Oscar for "Evergreen". The 1954 version earned a Song Oscar nomination for "The Man Who Got Away". I like "Shallow" but I still say the best movie song from 2018 is "Upbeat" from the Teen Titans Go! movie (I'm not kidding)

Bradley Cooper (3rd Oscar Nomination, 4th Best Picture Nominee) and Lady Gaga received Oscar nominations for their lead performances just as Fredric March & Janet Gaynor were for the 1937 version and James Mason & Judy Garland were for the 1954 version. Lady Gaga shows she is far better than that god-awful Simpsons episode that was centered on her. Bradley Cooper does a stupendous job of filling in Kris Kristofferson's shoes. I just hope Cooper doesn't go too far and end up starring in a remake of Heaven's Gate.

Sam Elliot was nominated for Supporting Actor. None of the first 3 versions of Star Is Born received Oscar nominations for supporting roles. Elliot's Oscar nom is somewhat surprising given his lack of screen time, especially compared to Marshiala Ali, who won the Oscar and he was really the co-star of Green Book. I wonder if Elliot's Oscar nomination was not so much about Star Is Born and more about praising Elliot for his awesome career as a whole. His lack of screen time is likely the main reason for his Golden Globe snub. Elliot was the only 2018 Supporting Actor Oscar nominee not nominated for the Golden Globes. Instead the Golden Globes nominated Timothy Chalamet for his supporting role in Beautiful Boy. Star Is Born is Elliot's second Best Picture Nominee after a brief appearance in Up In The Air

Star Is Born was a 2018 Adapted Screenplay Oscar nominee. The 1937 version was nominated for a Screenplay Oscar and won the Original Story Oscar.

Star Is Born was a 2018 Cinematography Oscar just as the 1937 version received an honorary Oscar for Cinematography and the third version was nominated the 1976 Cinematography Oscar.

The new version was nominated for the Sound Effects Mixing Oscar just as the 1976 version was Oscar Nominated for Sound (the Academy didn't honor Sound Effects Editing at that time).

Between Star Is Born and Black Klansman, Alec Baldwin becomes the latest person to appear in multiple Best Picture noms in the same year. He joins the ranks of John Malkovich (Killing Fields & Places In The Heart in 1984), John C. Reilley (Chicago, Gangs Of New York, The Hours in 2002) Marshiala Ali (Moonlight and Hidden Figures in 2016) and Lucas Hedges (Three Billboards and Ladybird in 2017). In addition to his single-scene appearances in these 2018 films, Alec Baldwin had a larger supporting role in the 1988 Best Picture nom, Working Girl

I thought up a game: linking 2018 Best Picture Nominees to 2017 Best Picture Nominees

1. I link Black Panther to 3 Billboard Outside Ebbing Missouri. They are both about traumatic past experiences and the consequences they cause for the present.

2. I link Black Klansman to Get Out. They both have issues of racial identity and they certainly involve some pretty evil caucasian dudes.

3. I link Bohemian Rhapsody to Darkest Hour. They both are biopics of some very unforgettable members of the British Empire.

4. I link The Favorite to Phantom Thread. They both involve the issue of how far a woman will go to get ahead in life.

5. I link Green Book to Call Me By Your Name. They both show life-changing friendships and they certainly have weird scenes involving food.

6. I link A Star Is Born 2018 to Shape Of Water. Both movies center on relationships that initially make you wonder what the female could possibly see in her companion but you come to see how they are right for each other.

7. I link Vice to The Post. They both involve some questionable government activity. Vice puts a suspiciously high level of blame on Dick Cheney for current events, somewhat similar to how The Post was criticized for giving too much focus on the Washington Post when the Pentagon Papers ordeal was more related to just the New York Times.

8. I link Roma to Ladybird. They both seem to be the Best Picture nominees that focus most on family relationships.
