Oooh, I get to start the thread.

Story.

Roma might be the first foreign language film to win Best Picture.

I am gonna be livid if "Into the Spider-Verse" doesn't win Best Animated Film.

It’s the only one that deserves to win given what it actually does for the medium.

Didn't see Isle of Dogs, how does that one stack up?

Also, Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody and B.P for best picture ?!

Buuuuuuuuullllllll....

I’m still irked over Bohemian Rhapsody since there’s the Bryan Singer problem. That would be yet another failure for people to actually do anything in spite of the Weinstein effect.

Yup.

Also, didn't it get pretty middling reviews when it first came out? I mean, it wouldn't be the first movie to be nominated that did, but it's still baffling.

Films I wish got Best Picture noms that didn’t: Sorry to Bother You, Widows, If Beale Street Could Talk, Into The Spider-Verse, Annihilation.

All these noms for Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book, but nothing at all for Sorry to Bother You? I mean, I guess it's to be expected, but pretty much the only surprise on this is that Black Panther was nominated for so many things—it's a good movie, to be sure, but I figured that the judges would think it wasn't "prestigious" enough for the Oscars.

Isle of Dogs will most likely not win. The movie which should win is Into the Spider-verse. Only one of the Disney movies has a shot at beating it because they are Disney movies and academy award voters are lazy regarding animation.

Dull year. Nothing for Annihilation. Nothing for Hereditary. Nothing for Bad Times at the El Royale. Can You Ever Forgive Me gets axed in favor of a racist movie and one made by a child molester.

Only really interested in Best Animated.

I'm very pleased with Adam Driver's nomination, I actually thought his performance in BlacKkKlansman upstaged just about everyone else in terms of raw quality (he gets the best acting moments as an undercover cop rather than just being an amusing Large Ham).

Bohemian Rhapsody's Best Picture nomination is surprising, considering the mediocre critical reviews it might have the lowest RT score of any Best Picture nominee (Gladiator is definitely one of the lowest wins at 76). I enjoyed the film mostly as a tribute to the creative process (the movie shows the characters working endlessly on developing their iconic anthems and bouncing ideas off each other, rather than just getting random inspiration) but can understand the criticism of the general story being workman.

Black Panther's nomination is probably due to being culturally significant coupled with an aggressive award campaign. They have a slightly better chance with Production Design and Sound Editing but still facing very stiff competition with A Quiet Place, First Man and Bohemian Rhapsody on that front.

Original Song is probably going to be "Shallow." I'm actually surprised A Star is Born didn't get Original Score.

Visual Effects are probably going to be a fight between Infinity War and Ready Player One, although I also see First Man as a darkhorse. While there are a lot of times you were aware that Aquaman was actors in front of a green screen, I still felt it should have gotten nominated for Visual Effects, Production Design or Costumes if only for just how immense the production was on that front, easily equaling IW or RPO.

I think that honour still goes to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Pandering Close. The Reader wasn't particularly well received either.

I hope Into the Spider-Verse gets the awards, because it definitely deserves it.

In other news: Eighth Grade, Sorry to Bother You, Blindspotting, and Bad Times at the El Royale were all snubbed.

Does it actually matter what movies are nominated and given awards anymore? Its pretty clear how flawed the awards are - what's the point of holding them up as the highest achievement a movie-maker can attain when its obvious how biased and out of the loop the Academy is?

Saying a movie 'deserves' to win is like saying your art project 'deserves' the approval of your least favorite art professor. It only makes sense if you actually value the opinion of whatever authority is judging.

"It only makes sense if you actually value the opinion of whatever authority is judging."

This isn't a great analogy. The professor's opinion actually affects your grade.
