Hate Sink cleanup

Go To

The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

Please note that we do not use Effort Posts.

I do stress again, that EP-ing is entirely optional and not a necessity to just put someone up, right?

I'm saying if they are going to do an effortpost. The primary reason we started doing effortposts to begin with was in order to address anything that casts a shadow of a doubt on the author's intent.

In the cases of obvious keeps with nothing to cast doubt on the author's intent, I actually agree that an effortpost isn't strictly necessary per-se. All that is needed is a blurb explaining their deeds and highlighting their most detestable behaviour.

However, there are some cases where effortposts definitely help, such as an upcoming effortpost where I intend to assess a certain character who starts out as an abusive harpy, but eventually grows out of it. She also has sympathetic moments. I still haven't finished the series, but when I do, I think anything that could cast a doubt on the author's intent should be addressed.

The only reason I personally do formal effortposts, even when I don't have to, is because I feel that for me, it's easier to structure.

Found this in the literature section:

  • In The Hunger Games, the Careers from District 1, 2 and 4 are Child Soldiers that volunteer to be in the game as they were trained from birth to kill others. Given their cruel mindset and superior skills, the Careers always team up to take down the weaker tributes, then gleefully kill each other once the others are dead.

Are you guys sure this belongs? Ignoring that the Careers only act the way they do because of the Capitol raising and training them from early ages to kill (they would have been decent people otherwise), they are mourned and seen as victims in-universe. And the Careers had a couple of Pet the Dog moments as well in the first book/movie.

Basically, I would agree that some of them can come across as particularly unlikable, especially since one of them cruelly taunted Katniss about Rue’s death while making an attempt on her life, and they are generally sadistic, but to call them Hate Sinks would be taking it too far.

Anyways, since I admittedly can’t wait to add Ryan, and all the votes he got so far are upvotes, here’s his write-up:

  • 30 Days in Spring (can be read here and here): Ryan Rhodes, despite being the protagonist of the story, is the only character without any likable traits. Not only does he kill, rape, and torture just for the fun of it, he is an absolute coward who acts like a jerk to basically anyone he sees, showing no gratitude towards Aaron for saving his life despite begging for someone to come to his rescue just seconds ago. He hates his own family for no real reason aside from the fact that they get on his nerves at times, and he even treats his own gang like dirt, not batting an eye when they are killed. All in all, it is clear that he is not someone we should feel any sympathy for.

Remove the bold emphasis. Our CM and MB entries must avoid these as well, to make them look professional.

And because this is an authorial intent trope, then if you, the author, say that the character is supposed to be hated, then they qualify as per Word of God (ie, word of you).

@Austin DR From what I was told, yes, this is allowed. But only in the HS thread.

@Master M Alright, they’re gone. And being the author of the story, I can confirm here that he was meant to be written as a bona fide Hate Sink. There’s a reason I had him commit acts of animal cruelty too.

So if that's the case...

What is the work?

My Father Was a Serial Killer was a story I was working on and added to the /nosleep over on Reddit. The story is about a young woman named Abby who recounts her childhood where she had an abusive father. Worse yet, a series of murders were occurring in the small, nameless town.

Who is he? What has he done?

The unnamed father was a reverend at the town's local church who was a strict fundamentalist who saw everyone around him as a sinner. He would often spend his time taking notes from Jonathan Edwards by terrorizing his congregation with threats of eternal hellfire.

Aside from that, he is an abusive husband and father. He blames his wife for charming him into having Abby, forever christening her as "abomination." With his wife, he kept her in a perpetual state of terror whether it be not catering to his needs, or simply viewing her as a blot in God's sight. When the family was sitting down at the table eating breakfast, a pregnant woman is announced as having been found dead in grizzly fashion. Turns out she was the sixth woman that was found dead, apparently having gone out to meet some friend she met online. When the father hears the announcement, his wife speaks out of turn with him due to him having zero empathy for the murder. She pecks him on his whereabouts the night prior only for him to deck her with his coffee mug.

Abby notices that her father would seclude himself for extended times in his study, apparently browsing the internet, which she passes off as him just looking for more material for his sermons. When that happens, the murders suddenly cease the final one being of a 16-year-old girl named Amelia whose body was found being weighed down in a pond. The father becomes more insane in his mannerisms climaxing in him getting arrested after a victim he attempted to kill managed to weasel her way out of his grip. Through interrogation, it was revealed that the father became obsessed with murder and dissection due to assisting his uncle, a butcher, during his childhood. He is sentenced to life in prison, but before going, he curses the jury and his family by saying that he would get his vengeance. Eventually, he would die in prison.

Evil Is Cool? Complexity? Freudian Excuse?

No. He was a self-righteous psychopath who killed women out of a morbid fascination with dissection.

What makes him personally despicable?

Guess.

New proposals, from The Bronx Warriors series.

    Hammer the Exterminator

Who's the candidate?

A mercenary in the employ of a MegaCorp.

What does he do?

When the daughter of the corp's late President flees to the Bronx, now a Wretched Hive of gang violence, so the Vice President can't use her as a puppet boss, the company sends Hammer to capture or eliminate her. He immediateky goes in guns blazing, killing a couple members of the Riders gang currently protecting his target. When she flees with their leader Trash, Hammer starts paying Riders to betray the two to him. They manage to consistently escape, so Hammer simply murders members of rival gang the Ogres so they'll blame the Riders and start a Mob War, where he plans to wipe out his targets under the cover the violence will provide. He confronts Trash, and reveals that he's from the Bronx himself and his end goal is to become famous for his merc work. After our heroes escape and reveal the frame job, Hammer simply calls more corporate goons in to burn both gangs alive. Trash escapes as the Sole Survivor, and shoots Hammer in the chest with a harpoon gun.

Personally despicable?

Manipulative corporate thug who only wants fame.

Redeeming qualities?

None. Despite his Awesome McCoolname, Hammer is a scumbag who prefers to have patsies do his dirty work. Growing up in the Bronx isn't portrayed as a Freudian Excuse either.

Verdict?

[tup]

    Floyd Wengler

Who's the candidate?

Another mercenary for another MegaCorp.

What does he do?

When hired to clear out the Bronx so his bosses can gentrify it, Wengler immediately goes the genocidal route. He bribes people to leave by promising accommodations in New Mexico, only to kill any who accept. Those who resist are simply gunned down in their homes. When Trash escapes one of these attacks, he becomes a Folk Hero to the residents of the Bronx. Wengler decides to wipe out his gang by strapping bombs to their family members. Trash and a few other rebels kidnap the company's President, so the VP (see below) hires Wengler to help him coup the company. Wengler forces his goons to kill themselves in Trash's booby traos so he can just walk up and kill the President himself. However, this turns out to be a trap, as our heroes have organized the people into open revolt. Wengler decides to hightail it out of there, killing friend abd foe alike until Trash shoots his truck in such a way that it explodes.

Personally despicable?

Genocidal sadist who, despite his boss's good intentions, flat-out admits that he's Only in It for the Money.

Redeeming qualities?

Absolutely none. Doesn't even oretend to have any.

Verdict?

[tup]

    Vice President Hoffman

Who's the candidate?

The Vice President of the second MegaCorp.

What does he do?

When his boss initiates the massacre of the Bronx, Hoffman happily supports him while plotting his own advancement in secret. Seeing an opportunity when the President is kudnapped, Hoffman promises Wengler a higher salary to kill the man for him. He does, and Hoffman rides away in a limousine, preparing for his new position... Only to be blown up by a rocket launcher fired by a Bronx rebel.

Personally despicable?

Corporate douchebag willing to slaughter innocents and kill his boss for power.

Redeeming qualities?

Nothing indicates that he intends to betray Wenglwr, but the man is a highly competent killer, so he has no reason to and many reasons to not. He also doesn't share his boss's good intentions, only wanting money and power.

Verdict?

Btw. Since a poster can propose someone from their own work that they create. I'm just gonna leave this here and I don't think EP is warranted because I guarantee you that these two were easy keeps. So they were coming from the story that I made, Dresden's Haunted Forest, and these are the two keepers that I can vouch on:

  • Ralf: He's a schoolyard bully who loves to torments and bullies Reinhardt just because he's a coward and at one point, challenged him to stay in that infamous forest until dawn and if Reinhardt doesn't comply, he planned to send a video about Reinhardt's embarrassing moments to all of school students. He does however, met a brutal death after he got attacked by one of the creature in the forest.
  • Joachim Dirlewanger: Essentially, he's actually a former Stasi member who had a nasty reputation because of his cruelty, trying to scare off all the intruders in his hideout by fabricating ghost rumors and is essentially the reason why Reinhardt is a coward until his teenage years. You see, after Reinhardt accidentally found out about him and his henchmen, he then took all of Reinhardt's friend as a hostage and threatens Reinhardt to call his parents and orders his parents to give 5.000 Deutsche Mark so that he could buy a bomb that could wipe out several landmarks on Berlin which would cost countless innocents of lives in order to restore the communist regime. When defeated by Reinhardt's father, he spitefully tries to take down Reinhardt, his father, his henchmen and Reinhardt's friend. Even though Reinhardt, his father and some of his friend survive, that incident left a huge psychological trauma for Reinhardt and made his father crippled and hung the badge from Dresden's police force so yeah...Also, for the cherry on top? His last name, Dirlewanger, came from "Oskar Dirlewanger", one of the most evil Nazis in real life so you know where I'm coming from...
  • No redeeming qualities, Freudian Excuse or Evil Is Cool moments as I intended to make them hateable at the end. Especially with Joachim's case

So what do you say about it? :3
