Hate Sink cleanup

Go To

The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

Please note that we do not use Effort Posts.

Here is my draft for Takasu:

  • Takasu (Armstrong in the English Dub) is a corrupt warden who sadistically abuses the inmates in the Detention center, confiscating their decks as well as lying and cheating to get his way. Rex Godwin orders him to observe Yusei's Mark of the Signers when he is arrested and sent to the Detention Center, but Takasu goes out of his to make things as unfair to Yusei possible, challenging the latter to a duel despite his deck being confiscated, inflicting Electric Torture on Yusei whenever he loses Life Points (while ensuring he doesn't get the same treatment), and having his men use the security cameras to look at the cards in Yusei's hand. Takasu slowly loses it when Yusei counter each of his methods of cheatingnote  and when Yusei uses Takasu's Mill strategy against him to win the duel, Takasu breaks his end of bargain and attempts to have Yusei locked up. Godwin (who was watching the entire duel and had discovered Takasu's abuse of power) puts a stop to him and fires him on the spot for his lack of honor and sadism. Among the many antagonists without supernatural powers, Takasu is definitely one of the most loathsome, being a bully (as shown by how abuses his authority as the warden and sadistically tortures the inmates), Politically Incorrect Villain (looking down on people from the Satellite District), Sore Loser (refusing to accept his loss against Yusei and trying to lock him up), and cheatter, all of which disgust his superior enough to fire him once he discovers his abuse of power.

So. We are dealing with Shin Megami Tensei. I've decided that P5 it's up for anyone who want to do such massive task.

However...Let's talk about Persona 2.

Persona 2 is a duology of games released in 1999-2000 as an Urban Fantasy spinoff of the popular JRPG franchise Shin Megami Tensei. It is the second title in the Persona spinoff series developed by Atlus, and takes place approximately three years after the first Persona.

Innocent Sin (Tsumi) stars loner tough-guy Tatsuya Suou, a Japanese high school student from Sumaru City. A popular rumor going around the city states that if you dial your own cellphone number, a mysterious man named "Joker" will appear before you and grant you whatever you wish. When Tatsuya and his friends investigate, Joker appears and marks them for death, accusing them of committing a crime against him which they can't remember. As the Joker Charm runs out of control and rumors start to become reality, Tatsuya and his friends must uncover the mystery of "The Masked Circle" and stop Joker before it's too late.

Eternal Punishment (Batsu) stars intrepid pollyanna Maya Amano, a Japanese journalist from Sumaru City. A popular rumor going around the city states that if you dial your own cellphone number, a mysterious man named "JOKER" will appear before you and murder whoever you wish. When Maya and her friends investigate, JOKER appears and marks her for death, accusing her of committing a crime against him which she can't remember. As the Joker Curse runs out of control and rumors start to become reality, Maya and her friends must uncover the mystery of "The Other Side" and stop JOKER before it's too — wait a second... Haven't we done this before?

Now...

Who is Ginji Sasaki?

Prince Taurus from the Masked Circle is a record producer rumoured to be a ephebophile. Introduced helping The Big Girl Lisa's friends with their dreams to be a idol. Ginji uses them to sing a special song in front of a large crowd (While also believing that Lisa knew english due to her american ancestry, something that annoys her badly).

After the group Muse does their debut, Ginji is discovered for the heroes and forced to retreat, with his plan to absorb the Ideal Energy (energy born from dreams, having it drained from you turns the victim into a Empty Shell that eventually banishes) from the crowd ruined, Ginji absorbes the Ideal Energy of Lisa's friend out of spite.

However, Ginji's worst thing was that he, alongside King Leo, planted explosives in the Aoba stadium, bombs that are set to explode. Ginji escapes, swearing revenge towards Lisa after having being a creep towards her during their battle.

After that, Ginji is mentioned after he kidnapped Maya Okamura. His body is found after he died trying to reach the top of Xibalba, the team is horrified at it, but nobody denies he was a jackass. Jun Kurusu, former Joker (no relation with Persona 5 BTW), confesses that Ginji called him in a attempt to recover his fame...he just went too far.

He appears again in EP, in a new universe, where he is trying to drain Kegare in a self help group. The team ruins his plans and he becomes a JOKER, a Humanoid Abomination that has to be put down.

Why he's disgusting?

Ephebophile, creep, attempted mass murderer, personal villainy towards Lisa. Dude is nasty, most Masked Circle members have fanbases, even the psychotic King Leo (whose abuse at hands of his fatherhe...doens't.

Verdict?

Yes. By the way, the reason why I'm not EP-ing King Leo is because he might be too much of Evil Is Cool and because, according to Tadami Satoshi, King Leo is meant to be sympathetic (he kinda failed IMO, but he's right in that Tatsuya Sudou is legitimately mentally ill).

—-

Who is Tatsuzou Sudou?

Ok, first of all. Who the heck is changing his official CM entry for this one?

Honestly, I just want to use this as the Hate Sink entry to get a compromise. Because it's a good summary

Tatsuzō Sudō is the tyrannical Japanese Foreign Minister who uses the doomsday cult he founded, the New World Order, to further his own political ambitions, and to coordinate an ascent to a utopian society free from original sin; through the cult, his criminal activity runs the gamut from unethical human experimentation, to assassinations, to political whitewashing. Even his own son Tatsuya proves to be no exception to his father's despotism, and when he escapes from the sanitarium he was committed to, Tatsuzou orders a hit on him from the Taiwanese mafia. When the New World Order successfully raises the spaceship Torifune from underneath Sumaru City, nearly annihilating everything on the Earth's surface in the process, he transforms his companions, and finally himself into mutant demons to protect both the ship and his "god" from the party, though his efforts are unsuccessful. Is it any wonder he was revamped into the nasty piece of work that is Masayoshi Shido?

Why he's disgusting?

Abusive Parents, wants to kill his own son, unloyal bastard, A God I Am.

Verdict?

Easy Yes.

  • Final Space: Clarence is a greedy tradesman who enslaved Gary in the beginning of season 2. Expressing disgust towards Gary and Little Cato — the former for being a human, the latter a Ventrexian — Clarence is motivated primarily by his ego. He even betrays the crew by working with Gary's mother when he was enraged that he wasn't being lavished in praise. Not even his adopted children deter him from his goal; he attacks Fox upon being exposed, the attack nearly killing him. Because of his sins, Clarence found himself alone in the finale.
  • The Bible:
    • Book Of Genesis: Shechem was the son of a prince in the town of the same name. Upon seeing the fair Dinah, he kidnapped and raped her before sending his father to Jacob to ask him his daughter's hand in marriage due to the custom at the time.
    • Book Of Judges & Samson and Delilah: Delilah was the second lover of Samson, but in truth was deceitful. Accepting a bribe from Samson's enemies which stated she would receive payment for discovering the secret of Samson's strength, she stood by and watched her servant cut off Samson's hair in his sleep and getting blinded and carried away by the Philistines.

Moar from me.

What is the work?

Ashigei Shoujo Komura-san is a manga about a high school student named Tsukinaga who unwittingly finds himself to be married to his classmate Komurai Komura who had come from a long line of acrobats with her essentially doing any mundane task with her feet.

Who is the candidate? What has she done?

Lulue Hanabira is a rich dancer who was known for engaging in competitions across the globe. She is introduced in Chapter 27 entertaining a crowd of people. From there, you could get the basics of her personality: she is completely egotistical and snobby referring to Komura as a "monkey." But when she saw that Komura could twirl sticks with her feet, she is distressed but when her butler gives her some reassurance, she tries to do the same...but it leads to her accidentally making it seem as though she were going to take Tsukinaga from Komura due to an odd custom in her family.

Later on, Lulue tries to practice on her acrobatics and she decides to kidnap Tsukinaga, threatening to hit him with tennis balls if he didn't tell her what weaknesses Komura had. But Komura comes in at the last minute and stops one of the tennis balls from hitting him.

Complexity? Mitigating factors?

No, a spoiled brat who thinks highly of herself. Nothing more, nothing less.

What makes her personally despicable?

Again, a self-entitled brat who is a Green-Eyed Monster if I ever saw one.

So, this one comes from the Books of Kings.

Who is the character? What has she done?

Queen Jezebel was the spouse of King Ahab, ruler of the kingdom of Israel. Her role was something akin to Lady Macbeth where she would be the one working behind her husband. She had several of the Jewish prophets massacred; came under conflict with Elijah the Tishibite numerously; and oversaw the creations of several temples of the Canaanite god Baal. When her prophets of Baal were killed under Elijah, she sought to have him killed, becoming his Archenemy.

Her worst act, however, is when she arranged for the man Naboth to be executed under false accusations. Her husband wanted his vine yard but was informed by Naboth that he couldn't part with it as it was in his family for generations. After Naboth is stoned to death, a prophet of God decrees to Ahab and his wife that they would be punished for the crime and their bloodline eradicated. Ahab is killed in battle, and Jezebel is tossed to her death and her corpse is reportedly eaten by dogs.

Freudian Excuse? Evil Is Cool? Complexity?

There is actually a debate with scholars over whether or not Jezebel truly was as monstrous as the scriptures present her as. But aside from that, she is depicted as not having any positive traits to her.

What makes her despicable?

Mass murder, tyranny, the usual.

Alright, first October candidate.

So I recently watched When Good Ghouls Go Bad a 2001 light hearted, but deep and touching zombie/ghost movie written by RL Stine, and staring Christopher Lloyd, and Joe Pichler (who has been missing since 2006 IRL). Some would call it a precursor to Paranorman). I really recommend it, despite the fact I'm gonna spoil a good chunk of it. The film tells the story of Danny Walker, whose family moved back to Walker Falls. Despite the town name, the Walker's aren't looked at too fondly due; Danny's grandfather "Uncle" Fred was once a pillar of the community especially with his charities and running a chocolate factory, until he shut it down after blaming himself to the unfortunate death of a boy named Curtis Danko, the films Decoy Antagonist. "Uncle" Fred dies in a freak accident and shortly after resurrected as a Revenant Zombie...which is followed by more such zombies rising from the grave.

Curtis Danko is a sympathetic character and turns out to be Good All Along, along with the other zombies, which leaves us with the films actual antagonist, Michael Kankel.

Who is he ? What does he do ?

Michael Kankel is the new arrogant "pillar" of the community, working as both the assistant principal and the coach at the local school, as well as running for mayor. He's also important to the story of Curtis Danko; Curtis was an outcast by "normal people" due to being a Creepy Child, but was quite artistic - one October, the art students were supposed to make statues of their hero and whoever wins the contest gets their statue put up in a town square. Curtis kept his statue a secret by working on it in a kiln until one Halloween he ended up accidentally burning to death. Kankel found his body and saw the statue, emerging from the kiln seemingly blind for three days. He claimed the statue and Curtis were pure evil and Curtis wrote a curse in the ashes saying that if the town were to celebrate Halloween again, he would destroy them all. But as we later find out the statue was actually of "Uncle" Fred Walker, who was Curtis' hero. There was nothing evil about the statue or Curtis, but the truth is that Curtis' death was the result of a Deadly Prank; Kankel and his friends locked Curtis in the kiln where he accidentally burns to death. When Kankel saw the body and the statue, he fabricated the whole curse because he was jealous that Curtis' statue was going up on the town square. As a result, Walker Falls has never celebrated Halloween for years, Fred Walker shut down the factory out of guilt (he donated the kiln) and the town fell into an economic sinkhole. Many of the townspeople blame the Walker's for their misfortune.

Halloween twenty years later is coming up, when the Walker's move back into town and Kankel has established himself to be the towns new "pillar", and actively encourages the fear and paranoia regarding Halloween as he tries to run for mayor. Anyways it turns out there's now something supernatural happening in Walker Falls; ever since Fred's death and resurrection as a revenant we find out other such revenants are being led by Curtis Danko to decorate the town for Halloween, but no one knows what the zombies actual intentions are. Curtis has the zombies gather the townsfolk to reveal the statue and Kankel makes an attempt to break Curtis' body apart to play hero. After Curtis reassembles himself, he reveals what the statue actually is (again, Uncle Fred). After being pointed out as Curtis' killer, Kankel is forced to confess the truth about that night, after which he is dragged off by his disgusted zombified father.

Authors intent ?

It seems pretty clear despite the guys cowardice and childishness being a little Played for Laughs, the R.L Stine was aiming just to make the movies antagonist someone the audience and characters to be disgusted by, in contrast to the Good All Along Curtis Danko. We need someone to root against I guess.

As far as Evil Is Cool or complexity goes, Kankel has none of these. At best he's kind of a buffon, and again his childishness and cowardice gets played for laughs. He's kind of like Biff Tannen in that regard. And complexity ? Kankel takes an a huge amount of pride in his family, especially his football playing father whose approval was part of the reason he starts the whole "curse" myth up for. But even his father sees that Kankel was acting out of his own ego and is disgusted by him, along with everyone else.

What makes him hateable ? Familiar Faces puts it best when he found out the twist in his review.

I'm sorry, I don't think anyone really understand how incredibly fucked up this is. I mean I can understand his childlike recklessness if he were in any way remorseful about what he did, but not only does he not feel bad, he uses the blood on his hands to buy for political power. Even when he realizes the zombies could be his fault, he doesn't step forward with all the other people apologizing, he just wants to become mayor. He's been blackmailing his friend, who if not the chief of police is the only cop around, he drags the town into an economic sinkhole, and ruined many, many lives. And the worst part about it is, it's not even about the fact he murdered someone.

[tup]Kankel.

By the way, I did some rewriting in the Animanga page for the Kill la Kill entries to make the look more professional and less word cruft-y.

Original:

Rewrite:

  • Ragyo Kiryuin is the head of REVOCS and one of the worst parents in all fiction. A cruel dictator, Ragyo sends her daughter, Satsuki, to run Honnouji Academy. She displays little true love for Satsuki, as their mother-daughter bonding moments are instead replaced with what amounts to incestual molestation. The action-packed hilarity of the show is drowned out by a pseudo-Cosmic Horror Story the moment she shows up and takes the reins from Satsuki. From there, it is revealed that she experimented on both her daughters, Satsuki and Ryuko, then threw the latter out when she thought Ryuko had died. She also sent Nui Harime to kill Soichirou/Isshin, her husband and the father of Ryuko. When she finally meets Ryuko, she Mind Rapes her and temporarily makes her a minion. Finally, she explains that her ultimate goal is to annihilate humanity and have the alien Life Fibers rule Earth instead. None of her evil plans are expanded upon beyond being evil for the sake of it. An abusive mother and tyrant who happily sells out her own species, Ragyo Kiryuin shortly and successfully took up the mantle of 'Worst Anime Mother Ever' within the hearts of anime fans, quite rightfully.
  • The aforementioned Nui Harime is The Dragon to Ragyo. A Cute and Psycho madwoman, Nui always keeps a cheerful attitude, even when she is causing misery in others. She toys with her enemies, constantly puts down Ryuko, Satsuki, and anyone who challenges her whenever they fight her, displays smug self-importance, and eventually gleefully reveals to Ryuko that she was the one who killed her father on orders from her mother. Though it is hinted that at least some of this may have come from Ragyo’s abuse, no sympathy is given to her for it, given how gladly she follows Ragyo’s orders. A cheerful yet murderous girl, Nui Harime commits her evil acts under her twisted belief that hate is the same thing as love.

On that note, can we get “Check” declared as Word Cruft? I feel like it breaks the readability of examples.

[up] Word Cruft? Check!

Also, I'd like to add the bolded lines to the header, albeit, they won't be added to the header in bold.

With regards to this trope, actions still generally speak louder than words. The format of editing which brings up characters who don't fit the bill, doesn't generally go into enough detail with regards to what makes these characters loathsome. Additionally, beginning entries by rattling off the names of the characters who don't fit the bill often ends up being Word Cruft, due to disrupting entry flow. Saying "Check" after each damning quality also impedes entries.

Yeah, but I mean “Check” in general tends to pop up on some entries of other tropes after every single aspect of how the trope is displayed. This is just one example. Another one was on one of the Big Bad pages, wherein the entry described every single bad thing the character did and said “check” afterwards (do not bother looking, I cleaned it up).

That is why I propose that “Check” as a whole be added to the list of Word Cruft.

On another note, I also often mention a villain who does not count, but a) I always mention them in direct relation to the actual hate sink, explaining how their sympathetic qualities emphasize the hate sink's lack thereof, and b) I generally limit said mention to at most a sentence or two. Take the last sentence of the Djbrill entry:

  • Cowardly abandoning his allies once things get hard while entertaining plans to rule the world, Djbrill is a petty genocidal bully with the resources of a state, standing in sharp contrast to his sympathetic rival Durandal.

It briefly mentions Durandal, who is not an example, in order to demonstrate how his sympathetic-ness makes Djbrill even more hatable, and does not clutter the entry but gets a small mention at the end. So that is how I think mentioning characters who are not hate sinks can be done properly.

I was thinking more along the lines of those people who do that whole "you can't hate x, for reason, you can't hate y, for reason, but you can hate z, for reason. As a result, I have changed the proposed addition as follows:

Additionally, beginning entries by rattling off the names of the characters who don't fit the bill often ends up being Word Cruft, due to disrupting entry flow. Saying "Check" after each damning quality also impedes entries.
