Hate Sink cleanup

Go To

The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

I hate to play the devils advocate especially since they decided to humanize a rapist anyways but think the point was that there’s no going back for rapists. Hence why everyone rejects Bryce. This is not a case of “rapist is misunderstood imo”.

[up]It definitely isn't. No one is excusing Bryce's actions. Not the writers, not his actor, none of the characters (except maybe freaking Ani).

Not going to comment much on Bryce. Whatever the writers were attempting to convey with him, they failed IMO.

Anyway, second one from O Maids in Your Savage Season:

Who is he? What has he done?

So in this case we have a high school student named Satoshi Sugimoto. He was someone who at best was a bit of a narcissist. He met Kazusa's friend Momoko Sudo one day, and as you'd expect, decided to get to know her better. Now, unlike with the other members of the literature club, Momoko found herself not being attracted to any of the boys she would have as classmates or anything of that sort. She later starts to develop a one-sided crush on Niina Sugawara, but that's a different story.

With Satoshi...sure, he does come off as condescending — especially when he is critical of other men for "not treating girls right" — he seemed to be unaware for the most part that he was making Momoko uncomfortable. Like with calling her, texting her frequently, as evidenced in one of the latter episodes, and then goes as far as to introduce his friends to her at the culture festival event at their school...but that one occasion has Momoko essentially explode at Satoshi, giving him the picture, and he leaves. Yeah, you could make the argument that Momoko could've handled it in a better way, Satoshi's next appearance makes sure that yo don't feel bad for Satoshi.

Episode 10? Shortly after the fall out of episode 8's events, Momoko had indirectly confessed to Niina but is crushed when she is told that having sex with friends was wrong (I mean there exists friends with benefits, but I guess that's off the table). Momoko finds herself playing an arcade game alone to cope with her discovery that some girls just don't see other girls as romantic objects. For whatever reason, I guess because the show needed that contrivance to happen, she gets a message from Satoshi asking if he could meet with her. She begrudgingly decides to meet with him and after offering her to discuss the issues at some cheap restaurant, he cuts to the chase: after that little breakdown she had at the culture festival, she had unwittingly made him look bad to his friends. So, he was going to give her an ultimatum: if she were to apologize for that incident, then he'd forgive her, and she would still be able to show her face at the cram school. From there, it is made clear that he never liked her that way and was most likely just using her to make himself look big in front of his friends. Naturally, Momoko refuses the offer and Satoshi has the balls to ask her whether she was a slut or not if she went out with him when she didn't even like him.

Momoko is of course offended by the insult and turns to leave...by Satoshi then grabs her by the arm. This causes Momoko to freak out once again, and Satoshi asks her if she were psychopathic on top of being a slut. From there, he kind of drops out of the show, but I doubt he was going to be given a last-minute change of heart.

What makes him personally despicable?

A narcissistic asshole for one? Or the fact that he didn't actually like Momoko and was using her as an ego boost? Or calling her a crazy slut for making him look bad in front of his friends? You decide.

Redeeming factors?

No. He seems like he is at first ignorant at best about making Momoko feel uncomfortable whenever he was around her, but nevertheless seemed to be a guy that was looking out for her best interests. But then episode 10 throws that out of the window by showing that it was an ego stroke the entire time.

[tup] Satoshi.

By the way, I forgot to make note of this earlier, but without this thread, we would have a harder time adressing questions such as “can a Chew Toy be a Hate Sink?” The answer to that question, by the way, is yes, a Hate Sink can DEFINITELY be a Chew Toy, as long as the narrative intends that they be seen as detestable, and their suffering be seen as well deserved; but we would not have established that had Beast not had his doubts about Richard Bagg.

Who is he? What has he done?

Marcus Cole is a senior and the student body president of Liberty High. He is the subject of Hannah Baker's sixth tape. He had asked Hannah out on a date as part of a bet with Bryce after hearing that she was "easy", where he made her wait an hour for him to show up. During the date Marcus makes unwanted sexual advances toward Hannah, even going as far as attempting to molest her.

When Hannah forced his hands off her private area, he has the gall to get pissed. Yelling at Hannah claiming that he never liked her and thought she would give it up, embarrassing infront of the whole restaurant and walking off.

Following Hannah's suicide and the release of the tapes he starts a "stop the tapes" movement. He even gets Clay suspended by framing him for being a marquinna user.

He continues to spread rumors and spew sexiest lines even after Hannah's death such as talking about how Hannah wanted "attention" and stating that what happened to Hannah isn't any different than what happens to any girl at any school.

During his despotion, he spreaded lies in the courtroom. Claiming that Hannah and Bryce had a relationship and that Hannah lied about being raped and that she really committed suicide because Bryce broke up with her. Marcus also lies about his date with Hannah claiming that he didn't mean to hurt her feelings and not mentioning the part where he had an outburst at her or tried to sexually assault her.

In his last scene, Tyler and Cyrus blackmail him with a picture of him getting wasted with a girl at the clubhouse, claiming it's either him or Bryce threatening to expose the picture. Marcus of course chooses Marcus and calls Bryce s rapist in front of the school.

Any Cool or Redeeming Qualities?

None. As of season three of 13RW, he is literally the only recurring character to never be put in a positive or sympathetic light, which says a lot.

There is nothing cool about him. He is a sexiest, perverted, narcissistic slimeball. Unlike every other character on Hannah's tapes he never shows remorse or has any moments of self reflection. All he cares about is his own image and is willing to put anyone even do called "friends" to keep himself clean.

He exposed Bryce not because it was morally the right thing to do but to keep his own image clean.

Even his attempts at manipulation show what a slimy Smug Snake he is, as he is so self absorbed he frequently makes mistakes in his narrative to the point where almost everyone can tell when he is lying.

While it is implied that he may have an FE as his father pushed him to be an overachiever. This FE comes across as downright petty when many of the characters have much more tragic F Es, and the FE is hardly brought up either way.

And to top it all off, he is the only antagonist to be a Karma Houdini, as while it is possible that he may have been expelled, seeing as he was a senior at the time of the second season and the third season takes place a year after, it is more likely that he simply graduated.

[tup] Satoshi and Marcus

New proposal, from Mad Max.

Who's the candidate?

The Toecutter, leader of a biker gang.

What does he do?

After one of his men, Nightrider, is killed in a car chase fleeing from police officer Max Rockatansky, the Toecutter decodes to terrorize the area in response. He leads his goons in attacking randon travellers, usually killing them. They also love to raoe the women and sometimes the men. Eventually, the gang hunts down Max (who was on vacation for much of the film) and runs over his wife and child. This causes Max to go mad and slaughter them all in a Roaring Rampage of Revenge. While being chased down by Max, the Toecutter gets run over by a truck.

Personally despicable?

Brutal murderer and rapist, without even the excuse of living in a post-apocalyptic aociety like the other baddoes of the series.

Redeeming qualities?

He genuinely cares for hos men, but given that this becomes thw catalyst for most of his onscreen crimes? I'm not gonna count it against him.

Verdict?

[tup]. Expect one more EP from this franchise; any other proposals are yours if you want them, though I do not recall anybody else qualifying.

New proposal, from Mad Max: Fury Road.

Who's the candidate?

Immortan Joe, a post-apocalyptic warlord.

What does he do?

Joe runs his chunk of the wasteland as a giant Cult of Personality, urging the people to not get "addicted" to water despite having plenty of it. He makes most of the men into brainwashed Warboys while keeping most of the women as sex slaves. When Imperator Furiosa busts out with some more of Joe's "brides" and the assistance of Max, the warlord spends the whole movie chasing them through the desert, not caring how many Warboys are killed in the process. Eventually, he gets sick of the pursuot and decides to just kill them all, despite one being pregnant with his child, but Furiosa manages to rip his face off before he can.

Personally despicable?

Cult leader, water hoarder and serial rapist.

Redeeming qualities?

He may have Evil Is Cool traits, being an imposing cynorg who has badass cars and charisma, but it's shown that deep down he's just a petty raider who happens to be smarter and more badass than others. The film was also intended to have a feminist message, so Joe is basically the narrative's embodiment of misogyny.

Verdict?

They don't go into too much detail on his intelligence, but he is shown to run a decent-sized empire that has higher tech than others (which isn't saying much given the setting), and he's charismstic enough to run the cult, but he's also clearly super vile. That said, I do think Toecutter is more cut-and-dry for this trope.

To Elfen: I honestly say No to Seryu, she's a psychotic Tautological Templar, but she has a fair amount of moments of genuine kindness, a determination that's...honestly kind of cool, dies Defiant to the End, genuinely values her comrades in the Jaegers. She definitely isn't meant to be utterly hated all the time.

I wouldn't kmow where to look, but one more thing that made it clear to me that we were mot meant to think Joe was cool: The film ends with Furiosa showing Joe's cprpse to the Warboys, and the cult immediately collapses.

That said, User, any thoughts on ths Toecutter?

Sure on Toecutter. Don't remember much on Fury Road, so can't really comment much on Immortan Joe. I know there was that comic book that was written as a segue into the film that had him more overtly nasty and without his charm, but I hadn't read it.
