Hate Sink cleanup

Go To

The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

Please note that we do not use Effort Posts.

  • Edward Scissorhands:
    • Jim is Kim Boggs' boyfriend, who gets violently possessive when the childlike Edward is brought home by her mom. He decides to manipulate him into picking a lock for his gang to rob a place, leaving him to be arrested when a burglar alarm goes off. When Kim dumps him over this, he drives around in a drunken rage and almost runs over her kid brother. He then blames Edward for a scratch the kid got from being rescued and leads an Angry Mob to kill him, eventually slapping Kim when she tries to stop him.
    • Joyce is a bored housewife whose interest is piqued when Edward arrives. She offers to help hom use his scissor hands to open a salon, but this is a front to seduce him. When he resists, not understanding what's happening, she tries to force herself on him. Edward succesfully escapes the assault, but Joyce uses a scratch she got in the process to claim he tried to rape her.

Draft:

Rurouni Kenshin: Industrialist Kanryu Takeda is a Drug Lord responsible for the mass production of opium, which he accomplishes by forcing Megumi Takani, an innocent doctor, to making them after killing her mentor. What pushes him into being a loathsome person is a combination of his cowardice in a series where all the major antagonists are badass blood knights, a Smug Snake who sees himself much more majestic than he actually is, and a Bad Boss who doesn't truly give a shit about his own men beyond being pawns, as evident when he gets out a gattling gun to kill his bodyguards when they finally turn against him. It's quite satisfying as even though Kenshin still doesn't break his vow to ever kill, he doesn't give the dirtbag a chance to redeem himself and instead disfigures him with one swipe of his sakabotou.

New proposal, from First Blood.

Who's the candidate?

Art Galt, chief deputy of a small town police department.

What does he do?

When John Rambo is arrested for vagrabcy by Sheriff Will Teasle, Galt decides to rough him up some while processing his case. This culminates in him forcibly blasting Rambo with a firehose to "shower" him, which triggers his Vietnam War torture PTSD. He then tries to dry-shave him, abd gets kicked across a room before Rambo escapes. Incensed by this grave offence, Galt vows to kill the drifter as Sheriff Teasle leads the wh9le department on a manhunt in the woods. Eventually, Galt corners Rambo in a helicopter, abd completely defies Teasle's orders to take him alive. This forces our hero to throw a rock at the chopper, causing Galt to fall to his death.

Personally despicable?

Sadist, lover of Police Brutality, and actively defies his boss and supposed best friend's orders out of petty vengeance.

Redeeming qualities?

None. He's a pretty minor character, but his sadism and pettiness shines through.

Verdict?

[tup]

Speaking of the Rambo franchise, Major Tint needs a rewrite bad. I'd do it myself, but I've only seen the first movie.

My first Sequel Trilogy candidate.

What's the work?

Star wars Episode VIII:the Last Jedi is the 8th installment of the epic Star wars Space Opera series.

Warning, Spoilers ahead.

Who's the candidate?

DJ, a Criminal "Code Breaker" 2 of the main Charachters Finn and Rose meet while in jail, he manages to Break them out. And ends up saving them later with a ship he stole because Finn and Rose needed a Code Breaker for a mission. He then makes rose give him her Necklace as payment for his assistance(Wich is a Tragic Keepsake from Roses late Sister)

He then has a talk with Finn telling him his philosophy about "Live free, don't join"

Later he helps them break into the First orders Flagship, revealing he only needed Roses Neckalce so he could help hack into the flagships hinting he may not be that bad a guy after all....

Then after they get Caught, he sells out the Resistance to the first order to save his own Skin and leaves Finn and Rose to die.

What makes him personally Hateable?

He's a Textbook Jerk with a Heart of Jerk who cowardly sells out the Resistance and Finn and Rose.

Freudian Excuse? Evil Is Cool? Complexity?

He has a good deal of Charm and Charisma, but this is to bait the Audience into thinking he'd be a Han Solo type Charachter...to make it more shocking when it's revealed he really IS just a Self serving Scumbag instead of a Loveable Rogue.

There's been some Alternative Charachter Interpretation about his final scene, where Finn Says his philosophy is wrong and DJ says "Maybe", with some speculating this means he does feel some remorse over his actions...but the film itself Dosent go much into this.

Final Verdict?

I'll let you decide.

[up][up] Do we have author's intent? Because honestly, I don't know what DJ is supposed to be seen as. My impression that DJ was more of a subversion of the Lando archetype than someone to be despised.

Abstain on DJ from The Last Jedi as I'm pretty sure the directot dis not intend for him to be hated.

Yes to Galt from Rambo though.

Any more votes on Grubba or is everyone okay if I do the writeup now?

[up][up] I'm not sure what the distinction is. The point of his Charachter is that some people Really Are just self serving Bastards rather then a Loveable Rogue.

We're meant to start to like him, feeling he'll be another Han solo, and then, like Finn and Rose, feel betrayed when he shows his true nature.

[up][up] If Grubba has three [tup] more than [tdown], you're good to go.

[up] I did find this from Benicio Del Toro:

""Maybe you could find him in a Bob Dylan song or a Tom Waits song. Or maybe in a Dostoyevsky novel. You'll find DJ in one of those stories. You don't know what he is. But that's the idea... You don't know if he's good or bad."

[up] I think I heard of that quote somewhere, thing is, Del Toro was the actor not the writer. I've heard a couple cases of Actor and directors/Writers having different takes on the Charachter

Also, minor note but when was the quote said exactly? Cause if it was said Before the movie it would make perfect sense to do so, as to avoid spoiling the twist with DJ.

  • First Blood: Art Galt is a small-town deputy with a fondness for Police Brutality. When John Rambo is arrested for vagrancy, Galt decides to rough him up for fun. This culminates in him blasting Rambo with a hose and trying to forcibly dry-shave him. This triggers Rambo's PTSD, and he kicks Galt across a room. Galt vows to kill him for this, even ignoring his boss's orders to take Rambo alive. Even his death, which was accidental, is hatable, as it only makes the manhunt against Rambo more extreme.

I'll set up a Rambo franchise tree in the drafts.

After much thought, I'll give DJ a [tdown]. Why? Because after the moment where he's revealed to have betrayed Rose and Finn to the First Order for money? He vanishes from the film with no comeuppance. Before his betrayal, there was nothing indicating that this was a despicable scumbag you cannot trust (beyond the implausible circumstances of finding a hacker in the same jail cell). He was the one who rescued Finn and Rose from the authorities and he's the one who gave back Rose's heirloom with no strings attached. And sometimes, the film suggests that his whole Grey-and-Gray Morality is somewhat correct by revealing that the arms dealers sell weapons to both sides.

The time when we the audience lose sympathy for DJ and start hating him is supposed to be after his betrayal. But the film never gives that much focus since he left like Karma Houdini and we don't know if DJ was always in cahoots with the First Order or is just switching sides like Captain Jack Sparrow. In the end, his betrayal is more of Shocking Swerve than true Hate Sink.

Then we have these entries on his character folder:

  • Hidden Depths: DJ's lackadaisical mannerisms belie a surprisingly jaded and pessimistic worldview. He figures that at the end of the day, there are no "Good Guys" or "Bad Guys" — just fools who fight and jerks who profit from it, and he'd rather be the latter. There's also some ambiguous depths that are revealed just before and after his betrayal — just before, he gives Rose her down-payment back seemingly out of genuine kindness, and after, he seems to display at least some degree of remorse over selling the Resistance out.

  • Only in It for the Money: He doesn't care one way or another about the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order, and his only goal is to find a way to make some credits off the chaos. Unsurprisingly his loyalty to the Resistance evaporates the moment he realizes things have failed leaving him with no pay and minutes to live. He's even able to swing a reward out of the First Order in the process, the subsequent deaths bothering him not at all. That said, he does appear to show some guilt in his body language and, assuming he wasn't scamming from the start, it was either betrayal or death.

  • Pet the Dog:
    • He initially demands Rose's necklace as a deposit for his services, but returns it to her after it turns out he only needed it as a conductor.
    • He also appears to be a bit buddy-buddy with BB-8....whom he affectionately refers to as "Roundy" and the droid even went with him when he initially ditched to jail (reuniting with Rose & Finn on the beach).
    • The one-shot comic about him seems to show that DJ mainly only scams the rich and powerful, casinos, other crooks and big business (rather than the poor, average person, old widows, etc. like a lot of con-artists). In a way, despite his betrayal in TLJ, he may genuinely be a genuine Lovable Rogue (albeit one who's adverse to fighting and wouldn't give his life for a cause).

[up] yes, I recognize that he Dosent do anything loathsome before the betrayal, as I said before his actions beforehand were Textbook Bait the Dog, the film has a running theme of Subverting expectations and DJ was one of them, the audience is supposed to he Baited into liking DJ, as I said above to give off a Loveable Rogue vibe.

As for him getting away with no commupenance...There wasn't really a way to write him getting commupenance without stretching out the film's screen time.

The comic i persoanly just think is a case of Depending on the Writer

  • Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny:
    • Lord Djbrill, successor of Muzuta Azrael, is just as hateful as his predecessor but without any of his seemingly charismatic behavior or intelligence. Leader of the hate group Blue Cosmos, Djbrill takes advantage of the worldwide tragedy of the Colony Drop of Junius 7 to plunge Earth and the PLANTs into a new war with a nuclear attack in the colonies. Continuing the Extended Program and brainwashing Mu La Flaga, he unleashes the Destroy—piloted for one of the Extended—in Eurasia, destroying many cities. Firing the Requiem and personally killing a million of Coordinators, Djbrill congratulates himself. Cowardly abandoning his allies once things get hard while entertaining plans to rule the world, Djbrill is a petty genocidal bully with the resources of a state.
    • Yuna Roma Seiran is a noble of Orb who becomes Cagalli's fiancee due to an Arranged Marriage agreed to in the past. Antagonizing his fiancee and mistrusting her allies, Yuna manipulates Cagalli into accepting an alliance with the Earth Alliance despite her unwillingness until she leaves Orb to join to the Three Ship Alliance. Attempting to win a reputation within the Earth Alliance, Yuna constantly sacrifices his own forces in vain attempts while blaming his failures on others, unable to admit that Cagalli abandoned him for his cowardice and impulsivity. Giving refuge to the above-mentioned Djbrill while pathetically trying to hide it, the Seiran's family causes Orb to be invaded by ZAFT. Arrested for treason after believing that Cagalli would save him, Yuna dies trying to escape from a battle that he caused.

Also, second star wars Candidate.

Warning spoilers.

Whos the candidate?

Supreme Leader Snoke, head of the first order, Kylo Rens master, and supposed Big Bad of the Sequel Trilogy.

In the force Awakens he didn't do too much aside from act as the film's Greater-Scope Villain. In the Sequel however he takes a bit more of a role, Scolding Kylo ren for his failures in TFA.

Then he creates a bond between Kylo and Rey, Wich ultimately results in Rey thinking Kylo can be changed, she travels too the Flagship and is captured and brought to Snoke himself.

He proceeds to Mind Rape Rey so he could get the Info of where Skywalker is, after doing so trying to get Kylo to kill Rey, gloating how he read Kylos mind and he felt "Resolve" and a desire to "Kill his true enemy". It turns out he was misinterpreting Kylos thoughts, as Kylo proceeds to kill Snoke.

What makes him personally Hateable?

He's a smug Prick who Abuses Kylo as we see in TLJ, Mind Rape's Rey and Smugly mocks her before getting a well deserved death.

Essentially he's as cruel as Palpatine, but lacks all his Charisma and Ability to back up the Ego.

Freudian Excuse? Complexity?

Zip, the novel of TFA gives him some hints of redeeming qualities like disliking Mind Rape and treats Kylo as his "Favorite apprentice". He subverts all of this in TLJ. Primary reason he isn't a CM is that he still Dosent quite have a backstory

Evil Is Cool?

He paints himself as a Calculating Mastermind like Palps, and pulls off the admittedly Clever scheme of force bonding Kylo and Rey, but ultimately, as part of TL Js theme of Subverting expectations, Snoke is ultimately just a Smug Big Bad Wannabe who gets unceremoniously Offed by Kylo.

Final Verdict?

Unlike DJ who I myself wasn't 100% sure about, I think Snoke is an easy keep.
