Hate Sink cleanup

Go To

The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

Please note that we do not use Effort Posts.

Draft for Marvolo Gaunt.

  • Marvolo Gaunt is The Patriarch of the Gaunt family and one of the last living descendants of Salazar Slytherin alongside his children Morfin and Merope. Marvolo treated his daughter Merope with nothing but contempt, forcing her to do all the work and berating her for her lack of magic, a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy since abuse stifles the development of magic. Because of his bloodline, Marvolo thought he was untouchable, and proved to be unreasonable when confronted about his son’s attack on a muggle named Tom Riddle. When Marvolo learned of his daughter’s infatuation with Riddle, he tried to strangle her in front of a Ministry official, leading to his and Morfin’s arrest. Marvolo’s abusive treatment of his daughter caused decades of suffering for the wizarding world when Merope despaired after being left by Riddle and died giving birth to his son, who would become Lord Voldemort and instigated two wars in a mad quest for power.

Also, do we want to consider reorganizing the entries, ie alphabetization?

Also... Ace Attorney has a Hate Sink page of it's own HateSink.Ace Attorney and I think the majority of examples are good but I will reevaluate them regardless. Put Yakra the 13th in his Character page as well as that is where the example was originally. Just look for Yakra.

Good, looks like you found it. Will do Redd White next I think. Should be an easy keeper.

Edit: Any more votes on Grubba?

I'll try and alphebitize the live-action film entries later.

EDIT: Here's Vera. Stellarvore has one more keeper from this film, so I'll make the tree in the drafts page.

  • BrainDead: Ever since her husband died, Vera Cosgrove has bullied her son Lionel into spending all his time with her. When he actually gets a date, she stalks the two and manipulates him into leaving her after getting bitten by an animal. The infection eventually turns Vera into a zombie, who turns several of the neighbours. As Lionel tries to deal with the zombie attack, he learns that Vera drowned her own husband along with his mistress. Soon after, she mutates into a giant monster and tries to force Lionel into her womb to be with him forever.

Lekain's writeup time...

  • Fire Emblem Tellius
    • Duke Lekain of Gaddos is the Vice Minister of Begnion and an extremely heartless and an extremely bigoted man. Before the events of both games started, he and a few other Senators murdered Empress Misola of Begnion and blamed the murder on the peace-loving Serenes Forest Heron Laguz, leading to the people of Begnion massacring all but four in a single night, and bedridding one. In the beginning of Radiant Dawn, he allows Duke Numida and General Jarod to brutally enslave the conquered kingdom Daein and cruelly mistreat and or kill them. He tells Izuka, a man the Mad King Ashnard had as his loyal adviser, to work with him and together they find a young man named Pelleas who appears to be Daein's prince, and manipulate him into signing a blood pact. Lekain also had King Naesala of the raven kingdom of Kilvas sign said pact tricking both rulers into thinking it was a sign of goodwill. After approving laguz slavery between the various nobles, and the usage of a drug made by partner in crime, Izuka, to turn the Laguz into Feral Ones, he murders an ambassador of goodwill which kickstarts a massive war between the Laguz Alliance and Begnion. Using the king of Daein and his nation, as well as Kilvas, he takes this opportunity to attempt to wipe out the Laguz for good. Upon Ashera unleashing her divine judgment, he quickly sends fanatics of the goddess to murder the remaining heroes. In short, he's nothing but a despicable, bigoted human.

[tup] To Lekain. I love Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, and he and the Begnion senators are most definitely designed to be despised. Even the least malicious of them is a spineless Dirty Coward who rides the coattails of the other senators and can't stand up to them.

Here's the second BrainDead candidate. Man, I still remember renting that alongside Kill Bill and I didn't have the appetite for the latter after watching the former.

Who is Uncle Les? What has he done?

Les is Lionel's uncle, looking to extract his half of Vera's inheritance after her death. The first time we see him acting like a dick, he laughs when Lionel crashes into his mother's funeral service. He only gets worse, finding the zombies in Lionel's basement, although they aren't exactly animate, so he mistakes them for just plain corpses. Seeing these, he blackmails Lionel into giving him his inheritance and letting him keep the house. Les promptly throws a party.

Paquita shows up to the party, and Les starts groping her. She runs away into the basement, and he chases after her. Once she leaves, he starts to grope her again and tries to rape her in the kitchen after Lionel unsuccessfully tries to fight him off. The zombies escape the basement and start attacking everyone, and Lionel finds his way into the kitchen as the zombies converge at the door.

Lionel tries to persuade Les to stay, but he jumps out the window and runs to the toolshed, where he's attacked by the zombified pastor. How does he handle that? By pulling his teeth with pliers. Then he takes a pair of garden shears and hacks his way through the zombies before returning to the kitchen, finding Paquita with an infected woman named Rita as he chops up the horde with a pair of meat cleavers, and tries to kill Rita as Paquita pleads with him not to.

Just as he's about to finish her off, the zombie baby attacks him, and he chases after it into the basement, where he runs into an oversized Vera, gets his head ripped off Predator-style and shoved up his ass. Now infected, he returns to the kitchen to finish off Rita, only for Paquita to take his spinal and smash his head to bits on a table.

What makes him personally despicable?

Greedy, lecherous, cowardly, Ax-Crazy, has a toupee ... that about sums it up.

Evil Is Cool traits? Freudian Excuse? Complexity?

He does prove to be a pretty competent zombie killer, but the thing of it is, he takes way too much enjoyment out of it. Like pulling the pastor's teeth and chasing the baby just for hitting him. He does have a point when he says that Rita will be turned, but then ... he just starts gloating about how he's going to dismember her. And when he becomes a zombie, he still seems to retain some level of consciousness, since he goes back to strangle Rita, implying that he's always been little more than a sociopath. There's one moment where he displays kindness to Lionel, when he mistakenly believes him to be watching some of his father's porn movies, he offers to let him grieve in private. Of course, this is all before the party. He does have his moments where he's Laughably Evil, but overall, I'd honestly say he's worse than Vera. At least she had good reason to be angry with her husband, she just went too far and her abuse of Lionel was inexcusable.

Verdict?

Easy keep.

Yes to Les. As you say he's an easy keep.

Also, guys? Please don't ignore effortposts. It's pretty disheartening for someone who has gone out of their way to play a game, read a novel or watch a film or TV show just to give you an effortpost on said character. If you don't have anything to say about a character, that's one thing, but don't ignore an EP in favour of a character you think is a more obvious keep.

Don't forget to weigh in on Les, and this upcoming candidate from a depressing film which calls itself a Black Comedy, Trash Fire:

What is the work?

Trash Fire is a depressing movie about a grumpy man in his 30s named Owen, and his girlfriend, Isabel, who go to his grandmother, Violet's house in order to make amends with his sister, Pearl. Violet is a texbook domestic abuser, and it turns out, the one who orphaned Owen and Pearl.

Who is Violet, and what has she done?

The monster entry, Jarvis.

"Violet, Owen's abusive grandmother, is a religious fanatic who regularly mistreated Owen and his sister Pearl as children. Initially presented as merely an unpleasant woman, Violet is later revealed to be behind the fire that killed his parents, attempting to drive Owen to suicide by convincing him he was responsible. When Owen is not looking, Violet tampers with his epilepsy medication. Revealing her involvement in the fire and her intentions to kill the rest of her family to her minister, Pastor Sterling, Violet blackmails Sterling into refraining from interfering by reminding him that he molested her daughter. Stealing the latter's pet rattlesnake, she attempts to kill Owen's pregnant girlfriend, Isabel, by hiding the snake in the toilet. When this fails, she sends Owen under the porch under the pretense of checking the pipes, trying, but failing to set him on fire while he is underneath. Violet pulls a gun on Pearl later that night, only backing off when Pearl pulls her own gun. When Owen finally collapses due to his faulty medication, Violet prepares to shoot him and Isabel. A disgusting, self-righteous woman, Violet is a chilling example of an abuser."

What makes her personally despicable?

I don't know. Maybe her religious fanaticism? Maybe the reveal that she killed her own daughter and son-in-law? Maybe the fact that she attempted to drive her own grandchild to suicide? Maybe her horrific treatment of her disfigured granddaughter? Maybe it's all those things, plus the fact that she plans on finishing killing her remaining family?

Evil Is Cool traits? Freudian Excuse? Complexity?

FEH! Cool Traits, Schmool Traits; Freudian, Schmeudian; Complexity Schmexity.

The fact that she blames the pastor who molested her daughter for the fact that she killed the latter smacks less of giving the slightest rat's ass about her late daughter, and more about blackmailing the man into not telling anyone about her evil plot.

Verdict?

Easy keeper, and a disgusting example of an abuser.

[up] Any thoughts on Les?

Trash Fire: Violet is Owen and Pearl's abusive religious fanatic of a grandmother who made their lives miserable for years, continuing to mistreat the disfigured Pearl to the present day. Intending on murdering the rest of her family, Violet sabotages Owen's epilepsy medication when the latter is not looking. Revealing to her Pastor that she she killed her own daughter and son-in-law, and attempted to drive her own grandchild to suicide, Violet reveals her intention to finish killing the rest of her family, Blackmailing the pastor into compliance so that he does not interfere. Intending to murder the rest of her family, Violet puts a rattlesnake in the toilet in order to make an attempt on Isabel's life, then attempts to set Owen on fire. Later on, Violet attempts to shoot an incapacitated Owen, as well as Isabel, only to be shot by Pearl. Overall, Violet is a textbook example of a self-righteous abuser, and a sociopath.

[down] Oh. Right.

[up] Stellar did Les' EP.

New proposal, from Edward Scissorhands.

Who's the candidate?

Jim, Kim Boggs' boyfriend.

What does he do?

When Edward Scissorhands is tajen in by Kim's mom, Jim is one of the few people to not like him, seeing his presence as competition of Kim's affections. Eventually, he decides to trick the naive Edward into picking a lock for him during a robbery, leaving the poor guy to he arrested when a byrglar alarm goes off. When Kim dumps him for this, he ends up nearly running over her kid brother while driving drunk. He blames Edward for the attack, leading an angry mob to try and kill him. When he slaps Kim for trying to stip the violence, Edward stabs him through the stomach and throws him out a window.

Personally despicable?

Possessive, abusive, manipulative Jerk Jock who refuses to accept fault for anything he does.

Redeeming qualities?

Nope. He seems overprotective of Kim at first, but turns emotionally and physically abusive when she stands up to him.

Verdict?

[tup]. Expect one more EP from this film.

New proposal, from Edward Scissorhands.

Who's the candidate?

Joyce, a bored housewife.

What does she do?

When Edward shows up, Joyce takes an immediate interest, offering to help him open a salon. However, when she gets him alone, she tries to seduce him. As Ed is rather childlike, he has no idea what's going on, and she tries to force herself on him. He flees, accidentally cutting her in the process, and she accuses Ed of trying to raoe her, leading the town to ostracize him. Sadly, she's a Karma Houdini.

Personally despicable?

Tries to manipulate a man with the mind of a child into having sex with her, trying to rape him when he doesn't understand what's happening, and making a False Rape Accusation when that fails.

Redeeming qualities?

None. She's just a manipulative sexual predator.

Verdict?

I know the work is contentious nowadays thanks to the history behind its author, but that's for another thread. I nominate Takeda Kanryu from Rurouni Kenshin:

What Is The Work? Rurouni Kenshin is a manga set in the Meiji Resotration era in Japan.

Who's the candidate?

Takeda Kanryu is a druglord and one of the few Big Bads who doesn't do any fighting himself.

What does he do? Let's look at his Complete Monster entry, shall we?:

Kanryu Takeda is an industrialist who earns a massive amount of profit by hooking innocent and desperate people on opium. To this end, he enslaves Doctor Megumi Takani, having killed her mentor, and forces her to create a drug to destroy lives. When his elite bodyguards, the Oniwaban Group, turn on him, Takeda unveils a Gatling gun and opens fire on their leader, killing the rest of the group when they try to save him. Kanryu simply gloats how invincible he is before trying to kill everyone else, bragging about how his money gives him the right to do anything he wants.

Personally despicable?

A Non-Action Big Bad who's a Smug Snake Asshole, a Dirty Coward who could give less of a rat's ass, not even his own men beyond them being pawns. He also turns a doctor into a drug maker against her will.

Redeeming qualities? Evil Is Cool? Ha! He's a Dirty Coward who needed Aoshi to do everything for him! Sympathetic Qualities? What's that? Sounds like broke in here! Complexity? Far as we know, he's a selfish asshole who only cares for himself.

Verdict? Yes, Yes, and Yes.
