Hate Sink cleanup

Go To

In order to properly evaluate a Hate Sink candidate, the following questions must be answered.

What is the work?

State the work and which medium it is a part of, as well as what the work is about.

Who is the character, and what do they do?

State who the character is, and what courses of action they take.

What makes them personally despicable?

State the specific reasons they are despicable, such as petty behaviour and personal villainy.

Evil Is Cool traits? Complexity? Freudian Excuse?

State whether or not the character has any traits which get in the way of them being despicable, and if so, whether said traits are de-emphasised in favour of their despicable behaviour.

State whether or not you believe the criteria are met.

In order for this trope to be in effect, the character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author’s declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

Haman the Agagite, for instance, displays qualities of ego, bigotry, and pettiness; additionally, there is a custom of jeering at his name’s mere mention. It goes without saying, according to this thread, that Haman was intended to be despised by the audience. Being a Draco in Leather Pants, like Draco Malfoy, or a character people Love to Hate, like Joffrey Baratheon, doesn’t preclude being a Hate Sink; being a Complete Monster, like Haman, certainly doesn't preclude this trope either.

The main concern is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

With regards to this trope, actions still generally speak louder than words. The format of editing which brings up characters who don't fit the bill, doesn't generally go into enough detail with regards to what makes these characters loathsome.

The entries for this trope should focus on who does qualify, not the characters who do not.

Admittedly, this trope is less complex, but, because a Hate Sink carries out loathsome actions the same way a Complete Monster carries out evil actions, and a Magnificent Bastard carries out clever actions, it is ostensibly necessary to write these entries with a similar structure, albeit usually with a shorter paragraph.

Can a character barely get screen time and still be a Hate Sink? I'm asking because I feel unsure if the creators intended Blumiere's father from Super Paper Mario to be an example.

I got someone that I believe counts. I apologize if I say too much; I'm new to effort posting and I want to make sure you all understand the character as best as possible so it doesn't seem like I'm excluding or misrepresenting certain details.

The work

My First Girlfriend is a Gal, known as Hajimete No Gal to some, is a manga and anime series about a guy named Junichi Hashiba who goes from being a loser who hangs out with other losers to the center of multiple girls' affection, but opting for a Gyaru Girlfriend named Yukana Yame.

Bear in mind that I've only watched Crunchyroll's subtitled version as of posting this effort post. I know Funimation made a hilarious English dub that I need to check out, although this is about author's intention, so whatever.

The character and their actions

Dai Mitarai is a character who only exists in the anime adaptation. He appears at the very end of episode 8, after the end credits, as well as episodes 9 and 10.

When we first meet him, he seems like a nice guy and all. He talks to Yukana, if only to tell her that he's a cool guy now and that he's meeting his middle school friends for lunch the next day. He also alludes to some embarrassing Noodle Incident that Yukana was involved in. A menacing glare and lip-licking upon the couple's departure foreshadows his true colors.

Junichi's concerns are initially that Yukana was using Junichi to mess with him until she found someone better. Was It All a Lie? Actually, it turns out not, but that's besides the point. Yukana tells her friends Ranko Honjounote , Nene Fujinokinote , and Yui Kashinote  about this, leading Ranko to visit Junichi, who is at a different restaurant with his friends Shinpei Sakamotonote , Keigo Ishidanote , and Minoru Kobayakawanote . Ranko's intent was to attack Junichi for making Yukana cry, making good of a If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her... promise made earlier.

However, Dai and his friends enter the restaurant Junichi and company are in, in which they discuss how gyarus are so easynote . We get these rather useful, on-the-nose lines about how he loves taking girl who have boyfriends and that he would pass her on to his other friends, as she looks like the type of person who would go along with this. Junichi confronts him, but Dai maintains his smug attitude, reaffirms that Yukana is a "slut", and chooses to challenge the person he correctly determined a virgin outside.

Junichi is surrounded by Dai and his friends outside of the restaurant now, in which Junichi misses an attack and Dai subsequently strikes him. He mocks Junichi's attitude and punch for a bit before Junichi attacks him and bites him in the leg, promising to not let go until Dai promises him that he will not go near Yukana again. Dai sics his friends on Junichi, who still refuses to let go. Dai seems to give in after a bit... but uses this to attack Junichi further, kicking him onto the ground before repeatedly and literally kicking him while he is down in a manner not unlike what Vanilla Ice does to Iggy in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. The Japanese script, at least, has Dai call Junichi a dog, so I guess this makes this somewhat of a literal-ish Kick the Dog moment, except not really.note  During this, he says "like I'd keep my promise! Sluts like Yukana do what they do to get guys to use them like a tool! So I'm gonna use her! That's what she wants!" As Junichi attempts another attack, Dai hits him again.

And then Ranko comes in, almost in a Big Damn Heroes style, attacking and knocking out several of the cronies. She walks up to Dai, with some of the cronies stepping back, with Dai saying "you were a grade above us" in a smug tone still. His facial expressions and language ("You've got a pretty nice body, too. Lemme use it a bit.") make it clear that despite her friendship with Junichi and attacking the others, he sees her as an option for more in-bed action. Ranko calls him lame, Dai tells his cronies to attack, and then the other Big Damn Heroes arrive in that style; the three loser friends from earlier. Junichi leaves in order to settle things with Yukana while his friends handle the bad guys. Dai attempts to run to Junichi, since he wasn't intending on letting him leave, but our other four heroes stop him.

After a scene with the other four main characters i.e. Junichi, Yukana, Yui, and Nene, we see that Dai's cronies are knocked out, but Ranko, Shinpei, Keigo, Minoru, and Dai are still standing. Dai says "I'll go away, so forgive me!" Ranko says "did you really think we would do that?" and prepares for an attack, but a small girl appears. Dai tries to run away and knocks over the girl, but Minoru catches her and Dai reaffirms that he would never apologize to them. Hitting the girl angers Minoru, who rushes toward Dai. Dai is thus scared and runs away, but Keigo and Shinpei catch Minoru and Ranko catches Dai, proceeding to kick him in the balls, say that those who see girls as objects don't deserve balls, before they all proceed to let Minoru finish him off.

What makes him personally despicable?

None of the other characters are quite this mean or otherwise are Played for Laughs. This guy is played seriously.

Evil Is Cool traits? Complexity? Freudian Excuse?

Besides the backstory listed earlier, nope, although he is Bishōnen.

To Shadao.

Yeah, Pym always get that scene brought to him. It's honestly annoying given how all Marvel Superheroes usually do worst things and Hank already has Ultron to be his greatest failure. But yeah to his Ultimate version.

Now. For my Gundam guys.

  • Mobile Suit Gundam: Gihren Zabi, the de-facto dictator of Zeon is the first Big Bad of the franchise and one of the most despicable. A cold man that underestimates his enemies, Gihren is responsible for the One Year War, leading to the death of the half of humanity. Turning his brother's funeral into a militarist speech, Gihren kills his own father alongside the General Revil to avoid an armistice. Confronted for his sister, Gihren is apathetic at her rage at the death of their father. A megalomaniac that uses a hypocrite rhetoric about liberating the Colonies while murdering their population, Gihren had plans to reduce the population of Earth to less than one Billion to ensure his complete control over the Earth Sphere. The biggest mass murderer of the Universal Century, Gihren's tyrannical legacy haunted the Earth Sphere even beyond his death.

  • Mobile Suit Gundam SEED:
    • Muzuta Azrael is the leader of the terrorist hate group Blue Cosmos. Motivated for hatred against the Coordinators, Azrael uses his influences to ensure control over the Atlantic Federation and the Earth Alliance Forces. Having used Blue Cosmos to cause a accident that kills thousands of Coordinator civilians, Azrael embraces the radicalization of the war, intending to end the war with a genocidal attack towards the homeland of the Coordinators, without care for any of his allies and constantly abusing them, leading to his own death once the Captain of his ship betrays him. A genocidal bigot that used children and teenagers in experiments to enchance their combat skills, Azrael's actions continued haunting the Cosmic Era.
    • Al Da Flaga, father of Mu La Flaga, was a Abusive Parent that disinherited his own son for a grudge with his mother, seeing Mu as tainted for his mother's DNA. A narcissist that saw himself as a superior human, Al contacted the amoral scientist Ulen Hibiki and funded his investigation to clonate himself. Subjecting his clone to emotional abuse and traumatizing him, Al clonated himself again after discovering about the genetical defects of his clones. Dying in a fire caused for his first clone, said clone grew up as a misanthrope manipulator that saw himself as the embodiment of the failures of the world.
    • Ulen Hibiki is the biological father of Kira Yamato and Cagalli Yula Athha. A amoral scientist that wanted to create the Ultimate Coordinator, Ulen forced his own wife to uses their own embryos for the experiments without concern for her mental health, "allowing" her to have a daughter just to shut her. Having accepted funds from the above-mentioned Al Da Flaga, Ulen created rational clones to fulfill the wishes of a narcissist and realize more illegal experiments.

Well, it seems I'm a bit tight on schedule for the moment, so I'm putting up this batch and finish the rest later in the day:

  • Megamind: Hal Stewart starts off as Roxanne Ritchi's creepy and stalkerish cameraman, and only gets worse from there. After being accidentally given powers by Megamind, the latter disguises himself as his "Space Dad" and trains him to become the superhero known as Titan/Tighten. More interested in getting the girl than actually being a hero, Tighten uses his new powers to try to impress Roxanne. She rejects his advances, causing him to storm off and begin a life of crime. When he finds out that Megamind was his "Space Dad" and got Roxanne to go out with him, Tighten attempts to murder him in a fiery rage. Following Megamind's retreat, Tighten subjugates Metro City as his own, and when Roxanne attempts to talk sense into him, Tighten declares that there is no good in him, and kidnaps and tries to kill her for not loving him.
  • Fist of the North Star:
    • Jackal is a ruthless leader who lives by the rule "If you want to survive in this world, don't pick a fight with someone stronger than you". Overhearing about the rich water supply from a child from a village, who asks Kenshiro for help in digging it up, Jackal sets on his path to take away this water from the village, but not before killing his two henchmen for picking a fight with Kenshiro and disobeying his rule about not picking a fight with someone stronger than you. After Kenshiro left the village, which consisted of an old woman and a group of children. After Kenshiro left the village, Jackal attacked the village with his gang and upon taking over tries to force an old woman to watch as he prepares to hang all the children of the village. When Kenshiro started hunting him down for his crimes, Jackal has no problems sacrificing his own gang to ensure his own survival.
    • Jagi is a Third of Hokuto Brothers and the only evil one among them. After being humiliated by Kenshiro and left crippled for trying to force Kenshiro into abandoning his position of the successor of Hokuto Shinken, Jagi swears to make Kenshiro suffer. Vowing revenge, Jagi manipulated Shin into kidnapping Kenshiro's fiancee, Yuria, from him and later Jagi becomes the leader of a gang of slavers, who at one point occupied a village and started bullying, torturing and killing several men, women, and children for no reason.
    • Amiba is an arrogant martial arts scientist who claims that he could easily master any martial art style in record time. Coming to a Village of Miracles several years ago, Amiba decided to master the art of Hokuto No Ken and when he tried to cure an old man's broken leg, he hurt him instead, then Toki rushed to help this old man, accidentally slapping Amiba's face, angry Amiba tries to attack Toki, but Toki easily stopes him and put fear in him in front of everybody. Humiliated Amiba vowed revenge on Toki. When Toki was captured by Raoh, Amiba took the appearance of Toki, came to his village and started to experiment on men, women, and children by pressing their various pressure points and seeing what will happen, resulted in many agonizing deaths.
    • Jakoh is the chancellor of the Celestial Empire who ruled the empire through the young Celestial Emperor Rui and manipulating Falco, his adoptive brother, into doing his dirty work by using her as a hostage, keeping her in such unpleasant conditions that she eventually went blind. The Celestial Empire was exceptionally repressive, rewarding the wealthy and brutalizing the poor whilst punishing dissent with death. Eventually, Jakoh's paranoia led him to order Falco to obliterate the nations formed under the Hokuto Shinken and Nanto Seiken martial art schools. After an encountering with Raoh, Jakoh was left with an intense fear of the dark and thus he worked thousands of slaves to death in keeping the capital of the Celestial Empire under constant light.
  • Mad Max: Scabrous Scrotus is a brutal wasteland warlord and the son of Immortan Joe. Introduced kicking his own dog to get it to attack Max, Scrotus also runs a substantial portion of the wasteland. Out of spite, Scrotus not only attacks Max after Max legitimately wins a race, and finally, decides to murder Max's new family, Hope and Glory, leaving Max lonely, insane, and dedicated to vengeance.
  • Berserk:
    • Downplayed with Gambino. Even though he genuinely loves Sys, even abandoning a battle to try and return home to save her, he puts Guts through Training from Hell, abuses him, and sells him to the pedophile mercenary Donovan at a cheap price because he blames Guts for Sys' death. Still enraged by Sys' death, he drunkenly attempts to kill Guts and ironically draws sympathy when Guts kills him in self-defense.
  • One-Punch Man:
  • The Governor in "Good Hunting" is a disgusting man who can only become aroused by machines. He abducts the prostitute Yan to painfully turn her into a cyborg so he can treat her like a toy and regularly physically and sexually abuse her.
  • Detention: Sander Sanderson is introduced making unwanted advances towards Riley Jones, a process he repeats on a regular basis. Having murdered popular students Taylor Fisher and Billy Nolan, as well as Principal Karl Verge and Exchange Student Gord, Sander goes back in time, and, after being rejected by Riley one too many times, tries to convince a young Karl Verge to detonate Grizzly Lake with his assistance. When Riley and Clapton Davis interfere with his plan, Sander attempts to set off the bomb himself, only succeeding at killing himself. In the altered timeline, Sander attacks Riley and Clapton, breaks Riley's leg, then expresses his frustration with Riley's refusal to have sex with him, as well as his hatred for Grizzly Lake, killing fellow classmate Alexis when she walks in on him and Riley. Overall, Sander reveals himself as a petty douche who would murder a large number of people for immature reasons.
  • Van Wilder: Richard Bagg is an arrogant med student caring only about his own dreams and status as President of student government, seeing that as a license to talk down to and walk all over other students, even physically toying with his pledges. He is also Gwen's condescending boyfriend, who sees her as his "bitch" and when he sees Van and Gwen getting close, gets into a rivalry with Van. When Gwen, rejects his marriage proposal, he frames Van for serving alcohol to kids to get him arrested and expelled and later cheats on Gwen. This serves to make the humiliation and revenge pranks he's subjected to a joy to watch.

In any case, I am now going to effortpost one of my failed monster candidates; and just my luck, I happen to share a first name (more or less) with this fucker-I mean candidate.

What is the work?

Night Huntress, otherwise known as "Cat and Bones", is an Urban Fantasy novel series by Jeannine Frost. It entails the adventures of the half-breed Vampire Huntress, Catherine "Cat" Crawfield, and her sire/eventual husband, Crispin "Bones" Russell III, as they hunt the most evil of the vampires and other supernatural species.

Cat initially believes that all vampires are evil, due to the fact that she was conceived as a result of a vampire raping her mother, Justina Crawfield (or so she was told). She meets Bones, who helps her improve her skills, and they fall for each other.

After killing multiple vampires under the employ of Ian Flannery, the vampire who sired Bones, Cat gets unwanted attention from the former, who takes a group of people Cat cares about hostage. When this fails, Ian reveals that he has Cat's absentee father, Maximilian "Max" Williams, In his employ.

Earlier, Cat's employer, Donald "Don" Williams, was discovered to be Max's brother, or rather, Cat's uncle. It turns out that the story is a little different than Justina tells it, but it ends up making Max no less of a psychopath.

(Max is never outright referred to by his last name, but there is no reason to assume he does not share a last name with his brother, Don)

Who is Max Williams, and what has he done?

Before he was a vampire, Max Williams was an FBI agent; even before he was sired as a vampire, he was a psychopath who wanted to indulge his bloodlust. Accordingly, he is stated to have killed his and Don's parents. After the fact, Max goes to Ian Flannery, whom he had been investigating, to become a vampire.

Subsequently, Max encounters Justina Crawfield. Max seduces Justina, then psychologically torments her by revealing himself as a vampire, and claiming to be an unholy demon; subsequently, he abandons her and their child. As a result of his actions, Justina becomes a bitter, abusive parent to her daughter from the encounter, Cat.

In the following years, Max works as a mercenary under Ian's employ. However, upon discovering, to his chagrin, that his half-breed daughter is alive, Max sends a bounty hunter to kill the erstwhile occupants of Cat's childhood home, hoping to entrap her and have her killed, never once informing Ian of his intentions.

Eventually, when Cat confronts Ian, she gets a chance to confront Max as well. She expresses open hostility towards Max, accusing him of raping her mother. Max clarifies that his encounter with Justina was consensual, but additionally brags about the horror Justina felt after realizing she had a sexual encounter with a vampire. Max proudly proclaims that he made Justina believe that she was going to be pregnant with a hellspawn, due to his claims of being an unholy demon.

After Cat walks away from their encounter, Max decides to abandon Ian's agenda, working with someone else in order to kill his daughter. Accordingly, he ambushes Cat and Justina, shooting and torturing the former, threatening to sexually assault the latter if Cat screams. Max also expresses his intention to make Cat's death permanent, planning to dismember Cat so that Bones cannot raise her from the dead as a ghoul, and then rips out Cat's throat, only to be neutralized by Bones, who is fully intending on paying Max back for his actions. (Don't worry. Cat survives.)

What makes Max personally despicable?

Max murders his own parents, psychologically torments a woman after seducing her, works as a mercenary, kills two people to lure his own daughter into a trap and kill her, taunts his daughter about the circumstances of her conception, ambushes Cat and Justina, shooting Cat and then torturing her, intending on dismembering her so that there is no chance of reviving her. All of this because of his desire to inflict pointless cruelty on others. The traits that really make him loathsome are his willingness to murder his own daughter to rid himself of the indignity of fathering a half-breed, as well as torturing her and trying to kill her off permanently; another thing that may make him especially loathsome is the way in which he psychologically torments Justina.

Freudian Excuse? Mitigating Factors?

As stated prior in the monster thread, there is no nice way of saying this: Max was always an asshole. And vampires have moral agency in this setting. Additionally, Max is driven by a desire to inflict needless cruelty on others. He is never shown to care about anyone but himself.

Easy keeper, and father of the fucking year.

  • Night Huntress: Max Williams, the estranged brother of Don Williams, is a former FBI Agent turned vampire. Already a psychopath before being sired by Ian Flannery, Max is stated to have murdered his and Don's parents. Encountering Justina Crawfield after being sired, Max seduces Justina before psychologically tormenting her, claiming himself to be an unholy demon, then walking out on her and her child, actions which drive Justina to be an abusive parent to their daughter, Catherine "Cat" Crawfield. In the ensuing years, Max slakes his bloodlust as a mercenary under Ian's auspices. Disdainful of his half-breed daughter, Max has the erstwhile occupants of Cat's former childhood home murdered by a bounty hunter in order to lure her into a trap upon learning that she is alive, so he can have her killed, all behind Ian's back. Upon being confronted by Cat, Max taunts the former about the circumstances of her conception. Abandoning Ian in favour of ending his daughter's life, Max ambushes Cat and Justina, shooting and brutally torturing the former, and threatening to sexually assault the latter. Max expresses his intention to dismember Cat in order to prevent her from possibly being resuscitated as a ghoul, only to be neutralized by Crispin "Bones" Russell III before he can carry out his plans. A disgusting sadist, driven by a desire to inflict needless cruelty, Max demonstrates some of the most detestable qualities in humans and vampires alike.

I have another Hate Sink for Game of Thrones.

Who is the Character and What Does He Do?

Lord Harald Karstark (Paul Rattray) is the last surviving son of Lord Rickard Karstark, who was executed by Robb Stark in Season 3. He stayed behind at Karhold while his father and brothers went south to war, and withdrew his support when his father was executed.

Harald first appears in Season 6, Episode 2, titled “Home”. Harald reports that the Bolton soldiers sent to hunt for Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy have been found dead, agrees with Ramsay that they should attack Castle Black to retrieve Sansa and kill Jon, then reaffirms his loyalty to House Bolton by saying he won’t follow the Starks after Robb executed his father. When Maester Wolkan appears to announce that Roose’s wife Walda had given birth to a son, Harald does nothing when Ramsay stabs Roose to death, then orders the maester to refer to Ramsay as “Lord”.

In the next episode titled “Oathbreaker”, Harald appears again beside Ramsay when Smalljon Umber arrives at Winterfell with Rickon Stark, Rickon’s guardian Osha, and the head of Rickon’s direwolf Shaggydog. Smalljon implies that Harald has a “taste” for young boys, it’s left up in the air whether or not this is true.

Harald makes his final appearance in “Battle of the Bastards” at the parlay between Jon’s leaders and Ramsay’s forces. Harald leads the cavalry charge after Ramsay shoots Rickon dead, and is Killed Offscreen in the ensuing battle.

Personally Despicable?

On the one hand he’s cold and unfriendly and the other he’s a butt-kissing hypocrite. Harald is unbothered by Roose’s death despite the fact that Roose is his liege lord, and avenged his father’s death by killing Robb at the Red Wedding. He also has no problem siding with the Lannister-affiliated Boltons despite the fact that the Lannisters killed his brothers, making one wonder if he really cared about them. It’s left up to debate whether or not he’s a pedophile, but given his slightly angry reaction it isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Evil Is Cool? Complexity? Freudian Excuse?

None on the first two, and if he had a Freudian Excuse, he threw that out once he sided with Ramsay and allowed him to kill Roose, Walda and their son to pursue mindless vengeance.

I think he’s worse than Smalljon Umber. Smalljon Umber had a few good points, namely that he really doesn’t want to work with Ramsay and feels like he has no other choice because he fears that the wildlings will overrun his lands, and is effective on the battlefield by nearly taking out Tormund Giantsbane in single combat. Plus on his entry on the Northern Houses character page, he’s cited as a Token Good Teammate because he has mostly justifiable reason. Harald doesn’t even have those, and has no loyalties aside from Revenge Before Reason.

Attempt no. 2 at Roger's writeup.

  • ''Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice'

    • Roger Retinz is a sleazy television producer and former magician who was kicked out of Troupe Gramarye for injuring his arm. He sets up an elaborate frame plot and defamation to frame Trucy for the murder of his own apprentice, and drag her name through the mud. First he sets up a cruel prank and blackmails the de Famme twins to go along with it. Then he uses the prank as a ruse to cover up his own murder. Retinz then reposses the entire Wright Anything Agency, as part of his insurance to ensure Trucy is defenseless. Throughout the trial, Retinz is exposed for the snake he is and not a soul feels bad about him heading off to jail for his crimes. Cruel, and unfeeling till the end, Roger Retinz was truly one of the most despicable adversaries Phoenix's protege's have faced.

New proposal, from Army of Frankensteins.

Who's the candidate?

Mrs. Henderson, Alan Jones' landlady.

What does she do?

Henderson cones to collect Alan's rent, which is three months overdue. She offers to let Alan off the hook if he has sex with her, completely disregarding that he has a girlfriend he's planning to propose to. She sees the ring he intends to give said girlfriend, and demands it while accusing said girlfriend of adultery (which is untrue; see my next proposal for details on that), threatening eviction if she doesn't get the rent or the ring.

Personally despicable?

She's greedy, perverted, hypocritical (calls Alan's GF a slut not five minutes after sexually harassing one of her tenants) and abusive with power.

Redeeming qualities?

While it is true that Alan is several months behind on her rent, she loses all sympathy when she tries to abuse her power to have sex with him.
