Hate Sink cleanup

Go To

The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

Please note that we do not use Effort Posts.

The final episode for Cioccolata just dropped and the manga was already done with it back in the 1990s, so today I'll do an effortpost for Cioccolata.

What is the work?

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Vento Aureo takes place in the year 2001, in Italy about a 15 year old boy Giorno Giovanna wanting to stop the mafia and protect the city from drugs. After rebelling from The Boss they encounter a numerous of his elite guards, but none of which are more sadistic than Cioccolata.

What does he do?

Cioccolata's backstory is revealed by Diavolo in the manga and the narrator in the anime. He is shown at the ages of 14 to be giving poor drugs to the elderly, causing them to feel ill and die. He then tells some of them that their family would never love them, so they commit suicide. He recorded a lot of videotapes and filmed each of these suicide attempts. Later, he became a doctor and seemed to have accidentally killed someone. But it wasn't malpractice, it was on purpose. He committed surgery on normal healthy people, and reduced the aesthetic for the person so they would wake up and die while seeing their innards be pulled out. Sometime later he joined Passione after being fired from his job. At one point before the story starts, two members of another mafia group tried to find The Boss's secret identity and Cioccolata cutted Sorbet into 36 pieces, with Gelato committed suicide. Keep in mind, Cioccolata's Stand allows the user to be kept alive while doing all of this. In the present day, he goes on rampage first through a fishing village, killing several innocents along the way but makes himself to Rome to find Giorno and the group. There are over 3 million people in Rome and Cioccolata didn't care from killing all of them, in fact he enjoyed it. When Giorno seems to have beaten him, he uses his right arm and Stand to slit Mista's throat as a cowardly act before being beaten by a rush of punches of Gold Experience for 7 pages in the manga/40 seconds in the anime killing him as he then gets sent through a garbage truck disposal.

What makes him hateable?

He's a complete total sadist who enjoys seeing people die, and has the highest attempted kill count in the series aside from Dio Brando. So honestly, I'd say every act he does makes him awful.

Any Freudian Excuse or Evil Is Cool moments?

His last lines to Secco were "I love you" but he treats Secco not as a legitimate person, but more of a pet dog.

Oh and if you think there's anything else in him where he's got mitigating factors, HA HA HA—No.

Verdict? [tup][tup][tup][tup][tup][tup][tup][tup][tup][tup][tup] What a shitty sadistic rotten son of a bitch. Diavolo/The Boss even has seeming standards against him killing for his sadism, and he attempted to kill his daughter out of pure paranoia. I'll get to him next, but his arc isn't finished yet.

[up] Well I thought that because of the fact that it was in the manga for so long and would have been talked about before in the Complete Monster thread (And I'm pretty sure everyone here views that other thread) that it wouldn't have mattered, plus the anime didn't make any big changes. Sorry if I was wrong.

These entries are added. A heads up, I have a trip to China between June 8 to June 18, so I would not be as active I would be otherwise:

  • The Strange Thing About the Johnsons: Isaiah Johnson is a violent abuser who sexually abused his father for 14 years and later tried to kill his mother after deflecting the blame of his father's death from him.
  • Judy: Jack is a target in Judy's crusade against Abusive Parents. He openly neglects his ex-wife and son, laughs at his son's bullying and hospitalization even though it nearly killed him. On top of that, he openly sexually abusing his stepdaughter, Jamie. When Judy tortures him for his abuse, he's completely unrepentant, cowardly trying to justify himself and arrogantly acting like he's untouchable.
  • Teeth: Brad is abusive to his girlfriend and has openly lusted after his stepsister, Dawn, since childhood. When Dawn's mother is dying a slow and painful death, he leaves her to die to have sex with his girlfriend. When his father finally tries to throw him out, he turns the tables on him with a gun and sics a dog on him. When his father asks if he's upset about his mother, he says he doesn't even remember her and just wants to have sex with Dawn.

What's the Work

Radiant is a recently aired anime in Fall 2018 based on the French Comic Book of the same name by Tony Valente that tells us the story about Seth, Melie and Doc who tries to fight against mysterious monster known as "The Nemesis" and both of them are trying to destroy their nest known as Radiant. Now here's the interesting thing about Seth, Doc and Melie: They were known as "The Sorcerer" or better known as people who are better on using magic but with physical deformation due to the contact with the Nemesis (such as Seth's horns, Melie with split personality and so on) and as a result, they were horribly discriminated by the common folk and were considered as a mere abomination. Oh! And fun fact that Seth and co. were hunted by The Inquisition who clearly dislikes the existence of the sorcerers and desires to purge them.

Now, the Discrimination in question? Takes turn for the worst as both Seth and co. went into a place known as "Rumble Town" to hunt some Nemesis. Unfortunately, during their quest, they met the most racist and the most evil Inquisitor of them all, Konrad De Marbourg.

Who is He/What Has He Done

Alright, so Konrad De Marbourg is the Inquisitor who guarded the Rumble Town and claimed to be their "protective wall". He was infamous for his racist behavior and hates two things in his head: "Immigrants" and "Infected People". At his first appearance? He was played as a joke character, getting outsmarted and trolled by Dragunov several times. But in his next appearance? None of his actions following this are played for laughs at all.

See, here's the thing. Considered Konrad's hatred of Immigrants and Infected People, in the next episode during the nemesis attack, Konrad then begans to rile up the common folk against both Immigrants and the Infected against each other so that he could get rid of the Immigrant easily.

And during the crusade, Konrad then intends to purge the immigrants and innocent people that he riled up with his cannons which caused the Rumble Town getting almost destroyed and has no hesitations to sacrifice his subordinates if he defy against his orders. Oh! And in addition, his subordinates capture Doc which resulted on him getting deprived and getting his skin to mold. And also, in the next episode... We also revealed the truth regarding the nemesis attacks in Rumble Town and Konrad's most heinous crime.

It was revealed that he conspire together with a sorceress who could control the Nemesis—or better known as the Domitors—named Hameline in order to trapped both Immigrants and Rumble Town citizens to murder all of them because why not? And this also happened during the incident 15 years ago. (Although Konrad didn't know it was Hameline and just treat her as a random mercenary to be paid so uh)

Needless to say, it was revealed that he is also truly responsible for Hameline's misanthropic state as he frequently abuses her and her friends and as a result, Konrad riled some of the citizens to murder all of her friends in front of her and then it was revealed that he also murders his boss due to the latter's compassion with the infected people. This resulted on Hameline to snap especially in the present day.

Oh! To add on his laundry list, it was also revealed that before the Nemesis attacked The Rumble Town, Konrad then lies to the innocent citizens in Rumble Town including the Immigrants so that they could evacuate into the Inquisitor headquarters until it was revealed that he murders said innocent people by bombing the chains that hold the island that has the Inquisition Headquarters altogether which causes them to fall into their deaths and then Konrad pinned all of his crimes to innocent Immigrants because why not?

Oh yeah, I also should note that he also murdered a benevolent Inquisitor who treats Hameline pretty nicely to the point he gave her a flute that is important to her later on and keep in mind this guy used to be Konrad's superior when Konrad works as the Inquisition Soldier. Why did he do this? Because he hates the man and he saw him as nothing but hindrance to his plans

This caused Seth to getting enraged of course after seeing Hameline in a sorry state and also seeing the abhorrent actions that Konrad had committed in the past and present. Fortunately during the fight against Inquisitor, Seth wins against Konrad. However, it was unknown if Konrad is still alive or not and even then, due to Konrad's actions, it affects the reputation of The Inquisition badly so yeah...

What Makes Him Hatable

Konrad is a racist bigoted piece of shit who hates both Immigrants and the Infected because they "soiled" his beautiful town. He is also a callous and hypocritical person who doesn't care to destroy his own town just to further his plans. And according to Tony Valente himself? His dirtiest lines are almost verbatim quotes from French's most disliked Prime Minister, Manuel Valls, and this was truly confirmed by the author so let that sink in for a second. Sure, the Inquisitor also tries to murder all of the Infected but none of them is as bad as Konrad and even they can show a standard after seeing Konrad's actions.

Evil Is Cool or Freudian Excuse moments?

The only thing you can say is his cool mustache but that doesn't mitigate his character though tongue Aside from that...No. Even his claims at being Well-Intentioned is a farce at the end of the day.

Speaking of characters named Konrad...

What's the work? Warhammer Fantasy is the awesome Dark Fantasy universe which predated 40,000 by a number of years, although the other quickly became more popular. Anyways, I'll specifically be focusing on the Vampire Counts portion of its storyline for my EP, taking from the Von Carstein Trilogy and some portions of the army books and the wiki. Shall we begin?

Who is Konrad von Carstein? What does he do? Konrad von Carstein stands out for being an absolute contrasting Villain Protagonist to his father, the badass and somewhat noble Vlad von Carstein. Sired by Vlad as what seemed to be a sick joke, Konrad quickly proved himself an embarassment and mistake, being a mass-slaughtering, absolutely insane monster of a vampire who literally once shot an alley cat with a crossbow for fun. Konrad killed his own (human) mother for giving birth to him, went on excessive, bloody rampages, and eventually... took over the whole family? (Checks notes) Yeah, that happened. He also, even before taking over, consumed blood from

Konrad became the Count of Sylvania thanks to a combination of his incredible combat prowess and the scheming of his much more competent brother Mannfred, this idiot somehow ends up in charge of the von Carstein bloodline, not to mention the forces of Sylvania. Wanting to relive Vlad's accomplishments despite not having any Evil Sorcerer talents, Konrad starts forcibly conscripting necromancers and sorcerers. He goes on a massive military campaign, pretty much killing anyone and everything in his path.

Yeah, Konrad is the incarnation of Stupid Evil, barely keeping a lid on his own military campaign, and killing a lot of people, many his own, for excessively petty reasons. All he succeeded in was being so Ax-Crazy that all the warring peoples of the Empire against him. He then flew into a rage, again, and attacked them, before getting his ass kicked so thoroughly by the dwarves he just threw a fit and walked away. He was then killed in the woods, and achieved nothing. Overall, nothing he did mattered. He just killed a lot of people, temporarily united his enemies, and gave a free spot for Mannfred. Oh, also in there, he feeds on underage girls at massive feasts, noting that "beauty is only in the taking."

Yeah, he's that sorta guy.

Evil Is Cool qualities? Great fighter, very strong, but so absurdly Stupid Evil and pointlessly nuts that it undoes everything, not to mention the fact he amounts to The Bully in the grand scheme of things. It also bears mention that Warhammer Fantasy is a World of Badass, and if he weren't a great fighter, he'd have pretty much no place in that world. Even among the Vampire Counts, he's the least competent among them in almost every way.

Redeeming Qualities? He's insane, but he's capable enough of tactics that he's more stupid, violent, and petty than could be justified by his insanity. He's a Villain Protagonist who even gets perspective focused on him, but no on redeeming qualities.

Pass? Yeah.

Does anyone mind if the Cinder entry from RWBY is rewritten? The original write-up reads more like a YMMV entry than an objective one and it's basically a wordy ZCE as it doesn't bother explaining what it means by her treatment of Emerald, how she mocks Pyrrha's death or what counts as 'petty sadism'. A couple of people have tried to rewrite the entry from its original wording, so can I suggest a rewrite here?

Suggested rewrite:

Cinder has few redeeming traits that put her at odds even with her allies. She 'teaches' Emerald her place by slapping her when Emerald tries to question Cinder's decisions; when Jaune confronts her about Pyrrha's murder, Cinder mocks his lack of ability to protect the people he cares about then tries to make him suffer just for having the audacity to try and defeat her; after unleashing the Grimm and White Fang upon Vale, she watches the citizens dying with undisguised pleasure. Cinder's lack of loyalty causes Mercury to call Emerald deluded for being so loyal to a woman who doesn't return it and even estranges her from Salem, whose orders she is only willing to follow until they conflict with her own desire to kill Ruby. Cinder is self-aware, revels in her cruelty and shows no higher ideals, not even in distorted forms. Beneath her facade of a strong warrior, Cinder is a petty, sadistic bully who needs others to suffer so that she can feel powerful.

[tup] both Konrads. There is a reason we try to emulate the write-ups similar to those of Complete Monster entries, and that is because they focus on the Hate Sink's actual loathsome traits and actions, rather than the characters who do not qualify. That said, yes to the rewrite.

I suggest you use Cinder's full name on the Hate Sink page proper/RWBY main trope page, first name only on her personal character page. Keep the Ambition Is Evil pothole for her name, and a RWBY: Salem's Faction pothole for "her allies".

I also suggest that you cut the "few redeeming qualities" as she has been approved by the monster thread.

Instead, maybe say "Cinder Fall displays numerous negative traits that put her at odds with even her allies."

Anyways, please add the entry to the drafts for revisions.

Come to think of it, I would try at my best to write my entries in a little bit of an objective manner. Can "what the writer has done to this character", "creator and the fanbase thoughts?" also included on the writeup?

Ok, now two from Kaiserreich: Legacy of the Weltkrieg

What is the work?

Kaiserreich legacy of the Weltkrieg is an Alternate History mod where Germany won WWI and western Europe went socialist due to various successful socialist revolutions. However Germany helped the White Army and this, combined with Lenin being assassinated, led to the failure of the Bolshevik Revolution. The socialist nations of Western Europe shifted to less totalitarian ideologies such as Syndicalism and anarchism instead of Marxism-Leninism. In America, the Berlin stock market crash leads to a far right movement led by Huey Long and a far left movement led by Jack Reed and the Socialist party and this rise of radicalism leads to a civil war. If the far right movement, the American Union State wins then while Huey Long is a Well-Intentioned Extremist, the same cannot be said for two of the candidates, one of them being a group, in the mod. First we will talk about William Dudley Pelley.

Who is he?

(note that this character is a CM, so this is a summary of his CM entry)

William Dudley Pelley is the leader of the National Populist(fascist) Silver Legion faction within Huey Long's America First Party. During the Second American Civil War, Pelley allies with Huey Long as a part of his right-wing American Union State, fighting against the left-wing Combined Syndicates of America and the Federal Government.

If the AUS wins the civil war, Pelley will launch a coup if Huey Long rejects measures to enforce Prohibition.

Afterwards, Pelley purges everyone in the AUS government that's not in his faction, and executes Huey Long, turning America into a white supremacist Christian fundamentalist nation driven by an insane anti-Semitic AND anti-German form of Christianity. Pelley enacts policies such as enforcing Jim Crow laws across all of America, absorbing The KKK into the government and forming a Klan-led Secret Police, and sends dissidents to forced labor camps.

Pelley also enforces acts to restrict African-American freedom of movement, cuts African-American education to only focus on labor education, and expands African-American criminalization and penal labor to the point where slavery is all but relegalized.

Pelley also fosters rabid anti-vaccination conspiracy theories by promoting politicians with worldviews that vaccines are a socialist conspiracy, leading to the biggest polio outbreak in American history and leaves the population permanently crippled as a result.

What makes him hateable?

He's a total racist that turns America into an cross between Nazi Germany and the Republic of Gilead. He even stands out as particularly vile for national populist leaders in the setting, many of which actually avoid being Nazi stand ins despite the fact that National Populism is an expy of fascism(apart from a few like in Romania and Argentina, and they don't have much characterization to be considered hate sinks)—Kaiserreich is one of the few media that treats both fascism and socialism somewhat sympathetically despite their historical reputation. He makes Huey Long, who's actually a Well-Intentioned Extremist playing the far right fanatics following him to get into power, but then purge them to establish a benevolent dictatorship, look sympathetic in comparison.

Evil Is Cool or Freudian Excuse moments?

None for the latter. As for the former, he does seem to be a fan favorite to play as because of how over the top crazy he is but apart from that...nothing too concrete. And Love to Hate and even people liking a villain because of how crazy evil over the top they are aren't disqualifiers for this.

Verdict?

Now the second Kaiserreich candiate, or rather candiates since this is a group.

Who are they?

The War Powers Committee is a group of shady businessmen aligned with Huey Long's faction. They operate through various frontmen such as George Van Horn Mosley and Charles Lindburgh.

In the opening days of the Second Civil War, many large corporations will move their production out of the rebellious states, depriving many thousands of jobs. In the midsts of this economic catastrophe, Huey Long is approached by a group of industrialists sympathetic to his cause. They propose to set up a committee of loyal business owners to best defend American values, composed of mostly industrialists like Henry Ford and Fred Koch.

If Huey Long wins the civil war, then the War Powers Committee will plan to launch a coup, inviting him to dinner and murdering him. If they maintain their control and are not overthrown by a popular uprising exposing them and Mosley, the WPC will place George Van Horn Mosley in command of the nation and declare perpetual martial law by utilizing J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI to monitor the nation for the phantom assassins responsible for Huey’s disappearance—in reality to keep the nation in a perpetual state of fear, deporting left leaning immigrants using the Alien and Sedition Acts. The WPC then implements Counter Intelligence Program, or COINTELPRO, to hunt down leftists and anyone opposed to them. Paramilitaries such as the American Legion are deployed all over the nation to hunt down their enemies. They then enact policies screwing over unions while solely enriching themselves.

What Makes them Hatable?

The leadership of the War Powers Committee are self-interested businessmen that only want to enrich themselves at the expense of others, even if it means placing America into perpetual marshal law and going Big Brother Is Watching You on every suspected leftist. They aren't loyal to Huey Long at all, taking the opportunity to overthrow him as soon as they can. Even worse is what is revealed of the WPC if you play as the Socialist Party and win the Civil War as the Combined Syndicalists of America—the socialist leadership discover documents indicating that they were playing all the anti-socialist sides(Huey Long, the federal government, and the pro-democratic forces in the Pacific states), along with right wing unions like the American Federation of Labour from behind the scenes and planning to take over the winner. This essentially makes them the Greater-Scope Villain for the entire Second American civil war, and shows they were willing to let thousands if not millions die to fill their own pockets by doing all it takes to prolong the war and ensure the defeat of the far left forces.

Evil Is Cool or Freudian Excuse moments?

No to both. The WPC justifies their actions by claiming that "America was never a democracy, only a republic, and that it should be protected from the common masses" but it's just a excuse to enrich themselves at everyone's expense. As for redeeming qualities, they are presented as a Lighter Shade Of Black in contrast to Pelley and can launch a coup against him using Charles Lindbergh as their frontman, but given that they're selfish greedy businessmen that enforce corporate rule, it isn't seen as redeeming or a improvement but more "one oppressor overthrowing another".

Verdict:

Yea on the above. And finally I finished reading the manga with the same username as mine. With that being said, I have two candidates to propose on because why not?

What's the Work

Elfen Lied is a manga that's becoming one of my favorites of all time (Thanks to Lucy). The story tells us about Lucy, a beautiful girl who is revealed to be the queen of a horned humanoid species known as Diclonius that are capable to telekinetically control invisible hands known as "Vectors" that could brutally kill people, who escaped the research facility that experiments on Diclonius while brutally slaughters people in her own way.

During her escape however, she lost her memories after getting shot by an anti-tank rifle that leaves her injured and unconsciously fell into the ocean. However, after her body was found by two people, Kouta and Yuuka, in a nearby beach, Lucy lost her memories and only could speak "Nyuu". However, this is just the tip of the iceberg and things will start going interesting from there...

Now, since I finished the manga. The first candidate I want to bring is from Lucy's childhood and is one of the reasons why Lucy is in her misanthropic state in the present. Say hello to Tomoo everyone!

Who is Toomoo/What Has He Done

Ah yes... Before Lucy escaped to the outside world, she was put in an unknown orphanage and he met with a child named Toomoo. See, here's the thing about him: He loves to make Lucy's life a living hell along with his other friends by belittling her, calling her as an animal that supposed to not co-exist with humans, due to the little horns that she had.

What makes him hatable however and the action that pushes him over the edge is that when Lucy befriended a puppy, Toomoo overhears it and then teased Lucy about the puppy and throw it against the wall. In addition, he also brutally murdered the dog with a rock until it stopped moving and shown no regrets regarding it. This resulted on Lucy brutally murdered Toomoo and his friends and developed a seething hatred towards humanity as a result of the incident.

Now, before going to What Makes Him Hatable section, I want to present you guys with my second candidate: The Unknown Man

Who is The Unknown Man/What Has He Done

Well, The Unknown Man is one of the hitman who work for Dr. Kakuzawa and also trying to participates in Kakuzawa's plans to become a god. Both he and the other researcher in the facility, Dr. Arakawa, made a bet to capture Lucy and if Dr. Arakawa lose, she will become a sex slave for him and this is just a tip of the iceberg...

See, here's the thing: In order to find Lucy, he used an unknown Diclonius as a radar but before that, he raped her and brutally amputates her so that he could use her as a radar. The horrifying thing about him? Is that he also raped the other Diclonius before her.

And after performing that kind of horrifying thing, The Unknown Man then tries to search Lucy in a place known as the Maple House, a place where the main heroes resided, but in there, instead of founding Lucy, he found another diclonius named Nana and a human named Mayu and her dog, Wanta.

Disappointed by not founding Lucy, he slammed down the satchel that holds the brutally amputated Diclonius which killed her, knocking Nana with a neurotoxin spiked ball and then attempts to rape Mayu because why not? Fortunately however, another mercenary named Bando was able to stop The Unknown Man as Mayu had called the former earlier and even Bando was disgusted by Unknown Man's attempt to rape Mayu. His last fate is that he attempts to protect Lucy from Bando for pragmatic reasons but fortunately he was killed by Lucy once and for all.

What Makes Them Hateable

Well, for Toomoo, what makes him hateable is because of the fact that he torments the innocent Lucy by comparing her as an animal and murdering her only friend that could keep her sane, a puppy. This truly earns a scrutiny towards the fanbase to the point he would ended up being labelled as a Complete Monster (But in all honesty, I don't think he counts as one due to flunks in heinousness when you set him next to the likes of Lucy or The Unknown Man)

As for the Unknown Man...His brutal amputation towards an innocent diclonius so that he could use her as a radar and before that, he raped her and other diclonius girl and his attempt to rape Mayu? Need I say more.

Evil Is Cool or Freudian Excuse moments

Hahahahaha no. The only thing about Unknown Man is his attempt to save Lucy but that's all for Pragmatic Reasoning as without her, he won't become a god to rule the human race. And oh yeah, his artstyle resembling Alucard from Hellsing is kind of cool but his actions? Is a big no-no...

Tomoo is already on the trope. Isn't he?
