Ah dammit. Seriously though, I'd say the other haremettes ending up alone and basically aimless is probably a bigger annoyance to even the otaku folks than them ending up with some offscreen never seen guy. Apart from the fact it is kinda lame to never develop that relationship. Pair the Spares is a thing for a reason, even if it can be badly handed.

If there's one thing that seeing the incel movement has taught me, it's that the only thing a certain subset of nerdy guys hate more than not getting laid is the idea that other guys are getting laid.

Nah, the thing that drives them nuts is not only seeing other guys getting laid but also being confronted with the fact that being decent to women is the bare minimum and you are not entitled to anyone's affections. Basically, if girls don't go near you, it's probably because you are not good partner material, so either change and make an effort or remain as you are and whine some more.

Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, maybe we should try to find the absolutes that tie us.

Not that harems don't perpetuate the "basic decency = free ticket to their pants" notion, mind you.

Personally, if I ever have to write one, I will make damn sure that whoever is the centre of affection is actually worth it, otaku's insecurities be damned.

I would, at some point, really like to write a hardcore deconstruction of harem romcoms, but I fear I wouldn't have the patience to deal with romcom fans.

For better or worse, these people are what fuel the sales. Its not exactly a good idea to piss them off intentionally.

Hey, it worked for Evangelion, why wouldn't it also work with this genre?

This topic is mostly interesting for the people I never thought would read a harem manga.

[up][up][up] You mean the same series that has indulged in Rei and Asuka merch for over 20 years?

Both genres have their own problems. For example, Ecchi tends to ignore consent while harems tend to ignore independence.

It's like how in the West, romcoms have a reputation of making all women love-obsessed whereas horror or action movies are known to make them helpess damsels. They all have unique issues that might bother certain people more or less.

It's especially annoying because the series Haruba is a big enough fan of to crib his pen name off of it, Negima, doesn't do this. While Negima's ending had other problems (many other problems), and I'm not even going to touch UQ Holder, it also made a point to show that all of the girls had more or less gotten into their dream careers and/or found other people to fall in love with. I always thought that was nice.

It's been fun.

But all of the girls here did get into their dream careers :V Ichika is a famous actress, Miku and Nino are running their bakery together, and Itsuki finally became a teacher.

They don't need no men :V

One thing I will 100% give We Never Learn over this is that while both have focal dreams for the girls, they don't fall under Acceptable Feminine Goals and Traits as cleanly as all of Quints' do.

Compare: astronomer, psychiatrist, professional athlete, teacher, doctor to actress, baker, baker, bride, teacher.

When does she say that? I don't remember her ever saying they she wants to pursue athletics as a career, or even that she has any one sport she's passionate about. literally one chapter ago she said her real dream was to be a bride.

She had a sports sponsorship two chapters ago.

Now whether she found a career in that is another question

You mean the eternally beloved classic, School Days?

Woah, no! Geez, I'm not that kind of writer [lol]

I just wanna take the genre and it's usual trappings and stock characters through their paces a little bit, see if I can introduce some new ideas to a very tired and old structure.

literally one chapter ago she said her real dream was to be a bride

That annoys me so much. Yotsuba can do all kinds of stuff, has all sorts of abilities, but no, now that she's the winner girl, she has to be reduced to just "bride". Easily the most annoying part of this ending for me. Cultural differences, I suppose.

I heard that Oresuki had some deconstruction going on? Haven't watched it though.

Anyway, the end of the chap scared me, I thought we were having a surprise harem ending for a second. evil grin But I can buy a final Quint game.

From left to right I'd say: Itsuki, Yotsuba, Ichika, Miku, Nino.

Hm... can't be the two on the right side, because neither has the earrings. From the smiles, I'm guessing leftmost sister is Miku, second from the left is Yotsuba. That leaves the other three, so I'm guessing...

Miku, Yotsuba, Nino, Ichika, Itsuki.

Kinda amazed at how Itsuki and Miku managed to hide all that hair, though.

There must be a way, unless Itsuki's hair can dodge scissors like Emma's.
