Sure, but as a plot device, the whole tutor thing is still needed. Futaro, as a character, may be more than just a tutor, but the story still needs him in that role to progress, at least for now.

Of course, I could be wrong and we could be in for a big swerve in the story, and I'll be delighted if that's the case, but thus far, I don't think this is the kind of story that plays with it's own narrative that way.

All I'll say is don't expect the predictable result.

The beginning of this episode is very true to the whole sibling experience, especially around twins.

...there's a really jarring cut in the middle of the episode. Like, I get how the story follows, but it's weird that they chose to do that transition there/the way they did it.

So, as expected, the story finds a way to keep Futaro as the tutor. It seems to be this anime's thing to find enjoyable ways to execute on old cliches of the genre, so it happens as a result of Nino making a last-minute save, which I can appreciate, as it comes rather organically to her character. I also like the swift dodge of the cliche it set up at the end of last episode. The way Futaro finds to teach Ituski is also very standard for this kind of show, but well-executed enough that I don't mind.

With all the siblings (sort of) on side now, I wonder where the story will go next.

[up][up]Not really. My expectation was that the threat of Futaro being fired would be something the story wouldn't really follow on. Which it didn't. He's still the tutor, even though he failed. I never said the father was just kidding.

Episode 8, in which Yotsuba further proves why she's best quintuplet. Nino also gets a few shots in, surprisingly. I've been warming up to her recently.

Also, the childhood promise rears it's head again. Here's hoping it's well-handled. Thus far it's been fine, with Nino being into Futaro's "relative" and a picture showing that the quintuplets used to be way more identical. It also really highlights how they changed the hair colors to make them stand out more in the anime, which is a decision I'm starting to dislike a bit more now.

The hair colors in the anime are the same as in the manga's color illustrations though.

The color change has been evident in color pages in the manga too, though it's hard to say when exactly that decision was made (and thus whether the artist always intended them to have different hair colors, or whether he adopted it after it came up for the anime).

It's been fun.

It first came up in chapter 33, way before the anime was announced.

Either way, I don't find it to be a great decision. The girls have different enough styles in jsut about every area that telling them apart would have been easy even without the different shades of hair, and it could have made the times they're supposed to be impersonating each other more fun.

Also, interesting that in that picture Nino's hair is less purple and Miku's hair is more brown than they are in the anime.

Episode 08 (plus episode 07 thoughts):

If you thought that wedding scene Cold Open wasn't enough, here's a childhood promise subplot to shake things up!

I actually thought that out of all the quintuplets, the one I'd dislike the most would be Nino. Mainly because of how she reminded me of one of my least favorite tsundere characters, Kirino. (Seiyuu connection aside.) But then came her saving Fuutarou from being fired as the quintuplets' tutor by lying to her father that they all passed their exams (when the truth was they only passed one subject each)... All of a sudden, Nino's like Sagiri Ameno, a tsundere that I disliked at first, but warmed up to later on—more so after reading the latest chapters of the manga.

Damn, I can hear the voices of the Nino Gang calling to me... ("Oh, no!")

Also asking a spoilery question on the manga thread pertaining to this episode.

Nino kind of flip flops on likability through the series.

So, episode 8. Let's hope I'm talking about the right series this time around.

So it's a big setup episode for the camping trip. We have Ichika starting to notice she's not as okay with leaving Futaro to Miku as she thought, Miku trying to understand what this whole dating thing is all about, Nino being very dense, Itsuki finding out one of the twins is into Futaro, and Yotsuba just wants everybody to have fun. This'll be interesting, especially since we won't be so focused on getting everyone to study for a change, which will be very refreshing for the series' comedy.

I do like to see how the group has become more friendly, even having their own in-jokes at this point. It's far better than most harem situations, where you can't help but wonder why all these people hang out with each other.

Animation was a bit off in some places, though. Well, more than usual at any rate.

Nino kind of flip flops on likability through the series.

Well, I got myself ready for any Kirino-like moments (the moments that made me dislike her in the first place) as soon as I got around to watching episode 09... That bird flip, though... To Nino's credit, at least she's not the biggest 2D b-word this season. (Shield Hero fans will know who I'm referring to.)

Is it me or did the animation take a considerable dip in quality this time around? The show has always been a bit inconsistent, but this time was really bad.

Anyhow, this episode is, to my mind, the weakest one so far. Maybe for Nino fans it works better, since a large section of the episode is based around her story, but even then, there were few jokes that landed at any point. The biggest thing in the episode actually comes at the end, where Futaro makes the blunder of the day, and Ichika gets a real wake-up call as to how much she actually likes him. And now they're stuck on a shed for the night, which should be interesting, seen how this show likes to subvert these kinds of tropes.

So there wasn't much to this episode other than that part at the end. Hopefully the next two episodes make it up for the more lackluster entry this time around.

That feeling when you fall for a guy so hard you go back to manga. Twice in the same episode, even.

Interestingly, this episode has some really good animation. Guess last episode was the tradeoff for that. As for story, things are advancing nicely. Ichika gets fully informed of the legend about the campfire (and maybe cancels the dance? I don't think they confirm it), Miku makes up her mind regarding Futaro, Itsuki is still being tsundere about the whole thing, and the other two are still completely uninvolved. I'm not a great fan of how they set this episode up after Ichika and Futaro are found, but it's not all that bad or exaggerated. I guess that's mostly how the show's been handling things, so it's to be expected.

Thread's been bare these days, eh... oh well. It's the last episode anyways.

It's not particularly striking. The comedy takes the backseat for the ending, but then most of the episode is just wrap-up for the arc, to different levels of quality (nothing particularly bad, just some anticlimaxes). Par for the course.

Honestly, that's been about my opinion on the series. It's funny, and it absolutely loves taking the normal tropes for this kind of thing and giving them a bit of a spin, and for what it's worth, it does that well. But I don't think this is a show that'll blow anybody's socks off. It's a fun romcom.

I think it's worth coming over to the manga thread now, if you're feeling like continuing.

It's been fun.
