Quintessential Quintuplets [Anime]

From MAL:

A high school romantic comedy with five times the cute girls! A high school boy must work part-time to help five sisters study so they can graduate, but the only thing these quintuplets have in common is that they all hate studying!

Five girls who want to do anything but study, and their tutor: a high school boy who's got book smarts and not much else. Fuutarou Uesugi took the tutoring gig because he was desperate for cash, but when his students—the five beautiful daughters of a wealthy businessman—find five times the excuses to slack off, what can he do?! At this rate, the sisters won’t graduate, so if he wants to get paid, Fuutarou must think of a plan to suit each of them… Which feels hopeless when five out of five of them think he's a loser!

I was expecting this to be a guilty pleasure check-and-discard, but I'm actually really liking it so far. The main character has personality, as do all five of the sisters; the animation is well-done and the designs are nice; and the comic timing had me laughing out loud a few times. This is definitely one to watch.

Edit: This is the anime-only thread. The manga thread is here.

This one is definitely a pleasant surprise. If it keeps up the first episode's quality throughout the season, it'll be the best of it's kind I'll have seen in a while.

Also, Yotsuba is best quintuplet.

Yeah, definitely agreed. I'm pulling for an everybody wins ending as well, mostly because as you said, First Girl Wins is kind of meh. I do like Itsuki, but tsunderes aren't really my jam, and tsundere first girl wins is super cliche.

One thing I will say - I'm very, very glad that Miku's question about her jersey was a non-starter, because "sneaky bitch fakes sexual harassment to punish innocent guy" is a trope that needs to die.

I also really like Futaro so far. He's clever, and a good person - which I separate from the usual dishwater Nice Guy(tm) protagonists of shows like this. The kabedon apology was offbeat and funny. The 'kids say the darndest things' Licked by the Dog moment with his sister was a tiny bit cheesy, but I also appreciate that he's not trying to pull a ruse on them or anything. I like shows where characters are open with each other.

It's been fun.

I read the first chapter of this and had the same impressions you both did. I like all the main characters and I want to keep seeing them.

Been reading the manga for quite a while (which probably is further than the anime is going to get), but I've not picked up the anime. Yet. Actually, I've not been watching any any the last half year or so due to living circumstances, but anyway. This one's certainly on the list.

While I won't spoil anything, the manga is good and the characters get developed quite a bit. It's overall very good with handling the girls differently according to their personalities, in particular how that affects their relationship with Futaro. It's not like they turn into bog-standard haremettes.

I can't even say who's my favourite, but likely Miku, Nino, or Itsuki.

Also, gots a page: Go-Toubun No Hanayome.

Oh hey, Yoshitsugu Matsukoka as a harem lead? Looks like we're back in mid 2010's.

Well, I liked the first episode enough that I went and read all the chapters translated so far.

They definetly made the girls... "bigger" and changed their hair colors as well to make them more distinct. Weird, since they tend to pull the twins switch thing from time to time.

Hair colours are very often aesthetic for the audience only. The In-Universe hair colour is mostly black, regardless of what's shown. The most obvious example I can think of is probably Ranma ½, where Ranma always has black hair, but visually he has red hair when turned into a girl. Some characters find it hard to tell the difference, and there are cases where it's explicitly mentioned.

I'm assuming the case is the same here. Visual distinction is good for the audience, even if the characters are supposed to look the same. Getting confused about who's in the scene most of the time doesn't help the narrative.

I find the anime did a decent job making the girls seem all different enough to be recognizable while still being passable as twins. The different tones of red are the more difficult part to stomach, but still, I can overlook that.

No, me liking redheads has nothing to do with that.

Don't know why you would suggest that.

I would never. Especially not under suspicion that I'll give it a pass for the exact same reason, no sir.

That said, I do think the sisters don't feel quite as familial as one would expect, but maybe we'll see more of that in later episodes.

Also: anyone else realize that this show is basically The Royal Tutor but gender-flipped? Not that I mind, because I liked that show too.

It's been fun.

Saw the first episode. It was as awkward as I remember. Him not realising they're sisters kind of clashes with how they're supposed to look the same if you disregard clothes and haircuts. It does do a good enough job of introducing the characters, though, which is more important.

While it's been in the manga as well, I don't really like those wedding scenes. I want ending scenes at the ending, unless it's actually important. Which it isn't.

Yeah, those were pretty awkward. It's like... we don't really need a neon sign that says this is a romance anime!!! at the start there. Especially since he's introduced not even liking most of the sisters, so it doesn't make sense for him to be thinking it at that point.

Unless this is him explaining to their kids why they have five moms.

It's been fun.

[up][up]In fairness, one generally doesn't expect to meet quintuplets. It's far more likely to assume they're just look alike. Sure, fiver similar-looking redheads is also a stretch, but still.

And yeah, that wedding scene is indeed very unnecessary.

[up]Kids, this is the story of how I met your mothers...

I felt like the wedding scene is only there to create ambiguity on which sister he marries...ya know, what with the bride appearing with four separate reflections.

Interesting that they're supposed to all have the same hair color in the manga, because I swore on my life that was Itsuki in the Wedding scene.

Yeah, the anime version clearly has the wife looking like Itsuki. Didn't realize they were supposed to be much more identical in the manga, which makes sense, but is also kind of an unwinnable dilemma for the anime staff unless they wanted to do that one in black and white.

It's been fun.

[up]Well, they're all capable of looking exactly like one of their sisters with a wig.

[up][up][up]I think them looking the same is something that should probably be highlighted early on, especially since you can't tell in anime. On the other hand, it makes sense since he doesn't really care about what they look like, so he might just ignore it.

[up][up][up][up]I like that they don't immediately start out liking each other. And it takes various amounts of time for them to warm up to each other. That also goes for his side

I imagine the scene where he asks Yotsuba to frown at him was meant to highlight that, barring any more explicit comparisons later. If nothing else, it's now been established that in-universe, at least, the differences in their appearances are meant to be subtle enough that a change in expression or general bearing can make one sister look like another.

I can understand, but not necessarily agree with, changing their hair colour. This is anime, every design have to look unique and stand out. Just imagine Bleach's main cast all having Ichigo's orange hair.

Do I have to imagine Bleach at all? sad

I think in this case, considering I've read the manga without any trouble, it wouldn't hurt to have them have the same hair colour. They're distinct enough when they have different hair styles, and when they don't they're supposed to look the same.

I mean, unless the volume cover was changed after they decide to make an anime, it is consistent with the manga.

I would argue that that actually means their hair colors have been different the whole time, and the only reason it hasn't looked that way is due to limited screentones. I can definitely see how it might add a bit of bonus to the reading experience, though.

Without spoiling anything, them having the same hair color In-Universe is established in the manga, with the supposed-to-be-ambiguous bride now just plain looking like Itsuki being the first symptom of the anime changing that. Even when the manga color pages give them different tones, they're much closer to each other than the anime has them.
