The cookie/tracker popup keeps reappearing even though I've saved my choices

It's good that TV Tropes has added the option of opting out for cookies and trackers, since EU law states you should be able to do that... However, the popup where you choose which cookies and trackers you accept has appeared for three days in a row for me, even though each time I've clicked the "save your choices" button. Is there anything I can do about this?

~Tuomas: Please check your own cookie settings. We're using stock code from the GDPR site, so the cookie it creates should be standardized as well. If you're using an incognito browsing session or clearing your cookies, you'll get the popup again in your next session.

If you know how to look at your cookies for tvtropes.org, find the one titled "euconsent" and check its properties. In Chrome:

  1. Open Settings, then click Advanced.
  2. Click Content Settings, then Cookies, then See all cookies and site data.
  3. Enter "tvtropes.org" in the search box. Select our site from the results.
  4. Brows for "euconsent". If present, look at the "Expires" property and report what it says.

I'm having the same problem, the cookie currently says it will expire on the 7th of February next year but the message box is still appearing every few days. My browser isn't set to clear cookies or anything.

Yeah, the same with me. I use Firefox, no incognito browsing, the cookies are set to be cleared only when they expire, and the cookie in question only expires on February 7th next year... But the pop-up still keeps showing up. It happens once a day, every time I open this site for the first time that day. Happened again just now.

I forgot to mention before, this also occurs on my phone, so it's not just limited to one device or browser.

Yeah, the same with me, the popup appears once a day on my computer and my tablet.

Ditto. As far as I can tell it's the only website I visit where this happens. Firefox on Win 10, latest update, no adblocker.

Same problem as Tuomas, using Chrome, cookies set to expire the 16th of February of next year but I still get the pop-up once a day.

I'm having the same issue as the others. The cookie is set to expire February 16th, but it repeats every day. I get this on both my desktop (Windows 7 with Firefox) and my phone (Samsung Galaxy S7, Android 7.0, Samsung stock browser).

I only get this on my phone, never saw it on my Win 10 desktop. Both are using Chrome.

This might actually be fixed now, at least for me.

It's still happening to me, got the popup again when I opened the site just now.

It's still happening for me, too.

Ditto, just popped up for me again.

Btw, I see no option to save the choice.

When the popup first appeared, it had the option to choose which cookies to accept and to save your choices, but since then it has changed, now you can only choose "accept" or "reject".

It only stopped for me once I chose "accept". It seems if you click "reject", they'll just keep asking until you cave.

[up] That's not intended. I'll see if the admins recognize this issue.

Although... if you opt out of having data collected and/or cookies saved to your computer, how is our site supposed to record that you opted out?

Okay, so I've confirmed that the purpose of the dialog is not to offer you the chance to opt out of data collection, but to acknowledge that we collect data as a condition of using the site. You cannot choose not to have this done, other than by not using TV Tropes.

If you are closing or ignoring the dialog, then it will return periodically. This is intended. Your acknowledgment is stored per-browser, so if you access the site from multiple devices/browsers or clear your cookies between sessions, then it'll return.

If you are acknowledging it and it's still returning on the same browser, we need to figure out what's going on with that.

Thanks. That makes sense, but maybe it could be worded more clearly in the pop-up? I assumed that this was one of those "If you don't choose to accept we can't show you ads relevant to your interests" that a lot of sites seem to have, and frankly I couldn't care less if the ads I ignore are relevant to my interests or not.

Yeah, if the point of the popup is to confirm you accept the cookies, then it shouldn't have the "reject" option at all, because that makes it sound like you can opt out.

Although... if you opt out of having data collected and/or cookies saved to your computer, how is our site supposed to record that you opted out?

After the EU law changed, on many sites you can now choose to only accept the necessary cookies (which include your login cookie, and whether or not you've opted out of non-necessary cookies), or to accept optional (ad-related) cookies as well. It would be nice if TV Tropes had an option like this too, though I understand it's not your number one priority.

If that is what's happening then the popup is outright lying.

We and our partners use technology such as cookies on our site to personalise content and ads and analyse our traffic. Click I ACCEPT below to consent to the use of this technology across the web. You can change your mind and change your consent choices at anytime by returning to this site's privacy policy. If you choose I DO NOT ACCEPT we will continue to use cookies for features of this site and non-personalized ads. You can find out more about how google uses cookies here Google Cookie Policy. You can find a list of additional advertising partners and how they use your data here Additional Vendor Policies.

(emphasis mine)

This implies the choice is between essential cookies only (which, by the way, would include remembering the choice made) or all cookies (essential and commercial). But there's actually no choice, and data is collected anyway? If that is the case, then the popup is a lie.

Other things to note:

  • The "euconsent" cookie is present even if "I do not accept" was chosen. So the choice, whichever it is, should be remembered.

  • Clicking "I do not accept" results in much less cookies being present in the browser than "I accept", suggesting that the choice is, in fact, genuine.

  • Clicking "I do not accept" results in being redirected to the front page. Clicking "I accept" does not.

This last bit of what feels like passive-aggressiveness leads me to think that the behavior might be voluntary, i.e. that finding a "do not accept" cookie will prompt the popup anyway, as a punishment of sorts.

Or, it might be a bug, for example if the code for "do not accept" is not consistent across the program and as a result the cookie is mistaken for having an unknown value.

The popup didn't appear for a few weeks, but now it's back again, I got it on Monday, and again today. On Monday I clicked the on "additional vendor policies" link, opted out of cookies except for the one that's supposed to remember my consents choices, but I still got the popup again today. Is there nothing you can do about this?

Bumping this, cos I got the popup again. Is there really nothing that can be done about it?
