I always wanted to write a story similar to cult classic Beat 'em Up games like Final Fight or Double Dragon. But, I wanted to make it interesting and a little bit creative by avoiding the use of Excuse Plot and giving protagonists their own reasons for fighting against bad guys. But, I need small help with deciding certain factors. Mainly the magic system used in the setting, potential races and gangs ruling the city where the story takes place.
First off - magic. There is no Masquerade and almost everyone has access to magic. I was thinking of using elemental magic system and stick to basic elements - Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Light, Darkness and Non-Elemental. Each character would have better grasp of certain element than the other due to their natural affinities, etc. I could use a tip or two here.
Secondly - races. I'm not sure if I should include nonhumans. If so, what races should I use? If I would go for it, then main characters would be a Wolf Little Bit Beastly Beastmen, Dhampir, Elf and a Human.
Lastly - the gangs. Unlike in Final Fight and Double Dragon, there would be a couple of gangs roaming the street and fighting for the control over city districts. In the main story, all the gangs coexisted in a tentative peace, kept by the best street fighter in the city. Usually, the disputes were resolved by honorable duels between quarreling members of different gangs, watched over by Street Judges. But, that ended when a new gang called Reapers came one day and mercilessly killed the leader of Street Judges, who was arguably the best fighter in the city, and scattered the group. With the Judges out of the picture, new gang war erupted. So far, I had this ideas for gangs:
Animals: A gang of graffiti writers and general thrill-seekers. Their district is often called "The Jungle".
Street Angels or Saints (do not mistake them with those from Saints Row): A biker gang keen on keeping the streets safe. Formerly a women-only gang. Their leader owns Aphrodite Gym, their main source of income and their headquarters.
White Fangs: A gang consisting of reformed Yakuza members. It's in a way a gang
for vigilantes. The most secretive of all gangs, as no one knows where is their main base of operations or who even is their leader.
Bricks: A gang of athletes. Often called "Meatheads" because of their many Dumb Muscle members. They turned an abandoned warehouse into their private gym/HQ.
'Diamonds: The richest and most influential. Although with the least members compared to other gangs, ALL members are talented martial artists. They own a Black Bunny nightclub, which also functions as their HQ.
Reapers: The main antagonists, who started a gang war by basically destroying the Street Judges. Because they are new in the city, no one knows how strong they truly are. They are deemed a huge threat, as they have managed to kill arguably the best fighter in a city. I want to add one more gang, but I'm not sure what their gimmick should be. Also, I'm still not sure about the name for the gangs. I'm open for suggestions.
