As said in the title line, I've never posted on TV Tropes forums before so if this is in the wrong spot, I apologize.

I tried to make an edit to the Battleship entry on the above mentioned page. The original entry claimed that the movie "abandons all attempts at nautical terminology from the start" and lists the command of "Hard Left" as their defining example.

My response to the Trope entry was subsequently deleted and labeled as a Justifying Edit by the person who deleted said edit. In my opinion, the original entry was incorrectly labeled as an Artistic License based on my personal knowledge of the US Navy and the US shipping industry in general.

I sent a message to the person who deleted my entry that on the bridge of American vessels, the terms "Left" and "Right" are used in place of the (admittedly more nautical) "Port" and "Starboard". This has been the standard for quite some time and remains true to this day.

It IS true that on foreign flagged vessels the "proper" terms are used but since the movie Battleship features American naval vessels, their usage of "Left" and "Right" are actually correct and not a case of Artistic License. In lieu of simply deleting the Trope entry altogether, I felt it was a better idea to list a rebuttal to show that not ALL mindless movies are riddled with inaccuracies.

On a personal note, I used to work for the US Navy as a Civilian Mariner with a USCG license. I stood many an in-port watch with only the TV Tropes website to keep me company (our ship had blocked access to anything BUT .org and .gov addresses). Onboard that ship is actually how I found out about TV Tropes. So thanks to all of the Tropers out there who work hard to keep this place going!

Your edit violates Repair Dont Respond by being a lone second-level bullet to an example. Natter is discouraged on the page. It would be best to delete that trope with the American English nautical customs in the edit reason.
