Some people technically guessed right the sign this girl was Death were a misdirect, but barely got any closer to the truth. Although a minority did suspect she was Death at first, I can't recall a single post doubting her claim to be the Famine Devil. In hindsight, details kept making this assumption flimsier:
- Yoru initially refused to identify Death to Asa, . When Death claimed to be Famine, Yoru suddenly believes her, and later on agreed and insisted "I hadn't seen her in so long I didn't recognize her". Later, we find out all the Horsemen are outright faceblind. Even if Yoru'd seen Death and this incarnation of Famine before, she couldn't identify them without seeing their powers. And she's inclined to assume Death wouldn't be strolling about.
- It really seem like the Horsemen didn't know each other well before Part 2. Yoru does call Death "madwoman/crazy" before and after she claims to be Famine, which seems like Yoru's remembering the real one correctly.
- Nayuta described Fami to Denji as separate from the Death Devil, but Death's name wasn't brought up when they talked. Again, I think Death started out testing if Nayuta could recognize her.
- Devils generally spread destruction under their own name to increase their power, but Part 2 shows why they would do otherwise. In the Fire Devil's case, it was because they had a power source different from regular fear. The Aging Devil showed Primal Fears are so confident in their power, they don't need more.
- Death used her powers as little as possible, justifying it with secret "limitations". Even though she summoned any outright unstoppable avatar of a Primal Fear without anything noted cost—something I'm not sure anyone but Nayuta learned about.
- Death's summoning powers have no relation to hunger, and she actively compensated in theming through rhetoric ("starving" into compliance) and habit (wild overeating).
I have to wonder if her constant overeating was just an attempt to reinforce the idea she was the "Famine" devil for her ruse, or if it was also her attempting to invoke Death by Gluttony on herself.
Rodimus: Self-sacrifice, Magnus— It's cheap. It's a cheap way out. I need to live so I can make amends.Could be that. Could be her taking a chance to enjoy life. Could be a little bit of both.
I also realize it gives another meaning to the fact she wore scale earrings when Asa first met her. At the time it seemed to be just a misdirect to the idea she was the "Justice" Devil, since the scales are often associated with figures of "Justice" like "Lady Justice" or Astraea due to their being meant to represent justice being impartial, but the use of balanced scales harkens to a phrase regarding death: "All Are Equal in Death".
Rodimus: Self-sacrifice, Magnus— It's cheap. It's a cheap way out. I need to live so I can make amends.Death probably does enjoy food, even if literally goes straight through her. But the super-heavy gorging is probably less enjoyable.
This does make sense but now I’m a bit confused by her motives. She seemed to sincerely be invested in stopping the prophecy because she genuinely enjoys humanity and its culture indulging in them, but how does that track with wanting to die? Also how does this prophecy work since now it’s apparent it’s not actually in her control.

Once again, if going by the literal prophecy:
From the sky will come the great king of terror
To resuscitate the Great King of the Mongols
Before and After Mars reigns by good luck"
And since we see now that Death has direct control over literal Primal Devils without needing to "starve" them like she claimed she needed to as "Fami", this may all have been a means to get Nayuta killed so she could control the new Control Devil, take Denji out of the equation by either tricking Yoru into turning him into a weapon or making him an Unwitting Pawn, and then go after Yoru herself when she least expects it.
- Or, alternatively, make Denji hate her so much by warping Nayuta into the "Great King of Terror" so that Denji would actually erase Death by devouring her, making this a massive Suicidal Cosmic Temper Tantrum.

Rodimus: Self-sacrifice, Magnus— It's cheap. It's a cheap way out. I need to live so I can make amends.I do think Death really has been planning on making Asa and Denji stronger with the intent to kill her. But would that fulfill the prophesy or break it? And how could Pochita eating her, rather than killing, factor in?
My current theory on Death is that it's a Who Wants to Live Forever? situation. No matter how hard she tries, she can't figure out a way to die, as shown by the organs. Perhaps this is a "last resort" of sorts - she wants to be killed by Denji and Asa, but if they can't manage it, maybe she will just go the wipe out humanity route, in turn destroying their ability to fear, in turn finally being able to die. Essentially, a Xanatos Gambit to kill herself.
"..."So if we presume the death devil isn't lying(that's no guarantee), the prophecy is beyond her control and she would be forced to destroy humanity. Thus she tried the option of removing her organs to commit suicide, gave up on that because her next incarnation may want to destroy humanity unlike her. There's a weird pause when Famine said she should let Chainsaw man eat death, so either she trying to say that's impossible, or that the idea is stupid, or saying that's already the plan. Either way, somehow controlling famine and fake chainsaw man and making them cause terror would help her plan. God knows what causes the prophecy to happen because I originally thought that was just something Death made up.
Death says it's "due to humanity's fear of death reaching it's peak" - I assume due to the prophesied apocalypse. The most literal Self-Fulfilling Prophecy ever.
"..."Whatever causing that fear is presumably not something devil related because otherwise the plan would just be to kill said devil. I also don't see fear of death to increase dramatically just because people start believing in a prophecy. Then there's the option that Death is just lying about everything for another reason.
Why would she lie to people she was going to kill anyway? She has no incentive here, and from the food to the festival she does seem to like human culture...Maybe this ties into the powers that humanity holds? We saw with the aging devil humans have abilities that they simply die too fast to unlock, and of course human's fear is the source of basically all devils...could humanity really be some sort of reality bending force, unaware its leading to its own destruction? Wouldnt be the first time ive heard of it.
Despite the festival preparation strongly implying this is the present, I'm getting more into the idea this is secretly a flashback between the Falling Devil and Chainsaw Man Church arc. Among other things, Death reacts as if she hadn't considered feeding herself to Chainsaw Man, but Barem says using that power was exactly what he killed Nayuta for.
Asa shooting at the sunset, meanwhile Americans losing fingers with every shot. At least, if she's actually activating the power.
You know, we do need more of this, the couple(triple? Throuple?) together dating and having fun on the same wavelength. Shame Man Chainsaw (let's call him that) gotta ruin the fun.
I wouldn't assume Fake Chainsaw Man knows Denji is the real thing, rather than a different impostor. He showed up before Denji transformed, but could have at least seen the starter cord in hiding. The Fire Devil could also be lying to him again. Either way, I'm curious if becoming the Death Devil's puppet will let him regenerate the arm, but it wasn't clear what options Fire pseudodevils have aside from some imitation of Denji's revival ability only used offscreen.

"Fake Chainsaw Man" was just written on-screen last chapter.

I mean, yeah, money isn't real, but it still lets you buy things. So he got the right answer but still came to the wrong conclusion.
Anyway, I'm seeing all the posts about how, in hindsight, this makes so much sense. One thing I'm unclear on: Does the Horsemen facial blindness apply to each other? Was Yoru fooled too?
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.
