First things first: this game was actually released a couple of years back, but I only got around to playing it within the last couple of months and thought it might deserve some more time and love in the limelight for how much retro fun I had.
If you've ever played Desert Strike, Crusader: No Remorse or one of the voxel top-down isometric games from the 90s, then you've already got a bit of an idea on what Brigador is all about. You play as one of the titular Brigadors, which are essentially turn-coat mercenaries for hire employed to help bring about the downfall of Solo Nobre's military Junta by causing as much havoc as possible... oh, and also destroy as much infrastructure as possible in the process. Helps the corporations who hired you gain more lucrative reconstruction projects after the conflict ends, you know?
The gameplay has you piloting one of three vehicle classes: Mechs, Tanks, or Agravs (the nickname for hover tanks in this world). While it sounds limited at first, realize that the classes are far broader than they appear and include vehicles you wouldn't expect: the mech class includes small power armor suits and lightly armored scout walker akin to the AT-RT from Star Wars, the Tank class includes AF Vs, APCs, wheeled vehicles, or even a tiny Tuk-Tuk(!), and Agravs run the gamut from being civilian utility vehicles re-purposed for military duty, proper hover tanks, to gigantic battle platforms bristling with firepower.
You can customize the loadout for your vehicles too, depending on which hardpoints they can mount. Obviously heavy tanks and mechs can mount the largest weaponry in the game, whereas the power armor suits can only carry smaller weapons, but in exchange receive a cash bonus multiplier at the end of each mission in exchange for the increased difficulty (whereas the heaviest of the vehicles typically receive none). Oh yeah, and they weren't kidding in the advertisements: you really CAN blow everything up, with the ONLY exception being the district walls at the corners of each level.
You can select which pilot to command your vehicle too, but don't expect them to come with any unique combat abilities or functions - all they serve to do is increase or decrease the difficulty, along with the end of mission payouts. For example, the cheapest of the pilots will receive little to no bonus multipliers, but in exchange the difficulty will only barely increase past a certain threshold. In contrast, the more expensive pilot contracts will contain amazing multiplier bonuses, but in exchange they may see the difficulty reach the highest setting possible.
There's a surprising amount of lore too, if you're the type that likes to read between the lines and figure out the implications of certain technologies, faction policies and behaviors, the motivations for certain characters and what they say about their organization, or why would somebody even sign up to be a Brigador when the contract stipulations are so utterly godawful.
Yeah, I have this game too after I saw Two Best Friends Play take a look at it, but havenít touched it.
