Netflix Animation General Thread

I am amazed that Leo was actually written at least in part by Adam Sandler, and is surprisingly good. It's pretty much an open secret he's a terrible writer and most of Hotel Transylvania's lesser quality can be atributed to him.

Yeah, it was pretty well written and very nice looking.

It’s honestly just the songs that don’t fully do it for me. Other than that, I like it.

The movie is opening at number one on Netflix too, which is cool.

Something interesting:

Not often you get cartoons with middle-aged female protagonists!

Leo was good? I heard it's an ego trip with awful messages filled and unpleasant characters. Should I still give it a shot?

Carol and the End of the World looks like a breath of fresh air. How is it?

Saw both. To summerize: yes Leo was a legite good Adam Sandler movie and the messages it present aren’t really bad.

And Carol & The End of the World is definitely a 10 out of 10 show that does a good exploration on being human trying to fit into society.

Watching The Sea Beast right now.

It’s a shame people still don’t talk about this movie, but at least it’s getting a sequel.

And honestly, yeah. Leo is one of the better Sandler movies.

This is the thing with Netflix productions (and films that are only distributed by streaming services): people vaguely watch them before going to bed and forget about them.

Nimona had more staying power as did Klaus.

Yeah, but also, like I said, Sea Beast sequel and Pinocchio got the Oscar and a physical release.

The Sea Beast was great, and very underadvertised. I only learned about it through a friend that really loves pirates.

I’m shocked it’s done well enough for a sequel.

Should give you hope for Nimona.

Random question: what happens to the DreamWorks shows when they leave Netflix? Because only half of She Ra is available on iTunes…

For some reason they only released half of the series on DVD too. And it's a very rushed DVD with only 720p.

Do we know if All Hail King Julian moved to Peacock or something?

Turbo Fast is gone, I think it was moved. It could have been deleted because the Turbo movie wasn't popular. I have thought about what if Dreamworks stuff left Netflix before but some may not be as worth preserving. I would want stuff to be preserved but this is the nature of the beast of Streaming.

I believe it was taken off of Netflix entirely some time ago. Not sure why and I'm not sure if it's on another streaming service or if it's just wiped entirely from being viewed by legal means.

Dreamworks does have Orion and the Dark coming on Netflix soon, though. Looking forward to that one myself.

This shows that kids stuff is FINALLY THRIVING at Netflix. Both Leo and Chicken Run 2 did wonders for family and kid viewing.

A relatively newer YouTuber, Smashed Tomatoes, did a herul task of reviewing (with some exceptions) every Netflix original animated series ever released to this date (ranging from Western to Japanese) This ultimately leads to putting them on a tier list.

Their thesis is that, despite Netflix's chronic troiblesome handling, their animated works tend to be fairly and surprisingly strong compared to their live action output.

The usual suspects are covered (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Carmen Sandiego, Bojack Horseman). Though they also cover some hidden gems (Tear Along the Dotted Line, City of Ghosts, Carol and the End of the World).

Also, yes this video's fairly long at roughly five hours, but it's also meticulously time-stamped with seperate spoiler sections for certain shows. It helps that the pacing is well-done considering the wealth of content, which is usually an issue with some inexperienced or outright shoddy long-form content.

So we think Netflix will be working with Annapurna again?

Netflix will be releasing a Woody Woodpecker movie Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp on April 12.

I've been watching the video, and while I don't want to take away from the monumental task that is reviewing such a huge amount of shows, his reasoning for excluding some shows is very flimsy and ill-defined. He says in the video that shows from established animated franchises aren't included, but then in the comments, he says he left off any pre-established (non-video game) franchise. But then he breaks that rule for plenty of shows on the ranking anyway.

Weird how just letting all of these cartoons and animated media shows brought back so many subscribers instead of cancelling promising stuff in favor of killing whatever you didn’t think would be successful, huh Netflix? -_-
