A lot of people seem to be upset that Palicoes aren't in.

[up] My guess this that the filmmakers thought that nobody would take them seriously.

Really this movie might run on Just Here for Godzilla. No one will give a shit about Milla Jovovich or Tony Jaa and are just there to see what monsters show up. We already have the Rathalos and that sand burrowing one, after all.

[up][up] I rather hope not.

I... kinda... don't mind if people see it because it seems like "oh, a fine enough brain-turn-off-y popcorn flick that happens to be attached to some franchise" but I do not want the message to the studios to be "look, put in a couple elements from the games and you can do whatever. The fans will be okay."

So, I have zero knowledge of the source material beyond various conversations I've seen here, facebook and twitter. Decided to watch the trailer.

Broadly speaking, I kind of like the tone as it feels like intelligent characters dealing with a weird situation and not just goofballs who you are waiting to die. I like the monster designs, though it doesn't seem like a lot of variety beyond dragon/dinosaur types. The portrayal of the monsters remind me of Pacific Rim in a good way, the camera shots and rendering give them a sense of size, weight and menace.

I'm not too impressed with the on foot action, as stabbing toothpicks into a monster that big, even flaming toothpicks, doesn't convince me of how they will fight the monsters with archaic weapons. Looks like the weapons may be magical, but we didn't see anything too impressive being done in the trailer.

Someone didn't see Detective Pikachu or Sonic the Hedgehog... (Yeah, the latter had that "proto-Sonic" business, but they did a 180 on that and that's what counts.)

I'm still shocked that they got Detective Pikachu right. If not for covid, I'm sure we'd already have word of a sequel. Probably not a direct sequel, but definitely another live action Pokemon movie.

...A sequel was announced last year.

Anyway, given the relatively low budget of this movie, I figure it will do pretty well.

Maybe not enough for a sequel, but it's hard to tell just yet.

I'm torn as the graphic are great and the monsters look pretty good so I'd love to see what they could do with other films. On the other hand Anderson and mila are a recipe for disaster and her overshadowing everything.

I also wonder what sort of stunt is going to go horrifically wrong this time so that Anderson can try and screw any injured people out of worker's comp.

Speaking as another person with no knowledge of the franchise just going with the trailer, it looked... fairly competent? Everything with the soldiers looked painfully generic and while I think that was intentional at the outset, that doesn't make it a good decision.

The effects and some of the action looked solid, but I am worried about the human v. monster action on screen. Tony Jaa shooting a bow at a monster looked great, but Mila awkwardly spin-knifing at one looked terrible. If that's the action that makes it into the trailer, I'm a bit concerned.

But overall, I do think if I went into the trailer completely uncolored from past works (both franchise and the director), I don't think it looks bad. It wouldn't... excite me but I might catch it on streaming.

Well Monster Hunter franchise is more about setting than about plot, it's about human live in a world where these majestic and terrifying beast roam the land, how their culture built around taming and fighting these beasts. Great ships travel the sea of sand equipped with huge balista and cannon to deal with giant sand shark, giant fish-dragon thing that can cause a huge earthquake just because it horn grow to big and make it hard to see where it going, a rare beast going through it metamorphosis and spreading dangerous virus as the result,... An uncaring world full of godlike beasts than can't care less about the human on their pass. And then the tiny human kill those godlike beast and wear theirs skin to fight even more godlike beast. There no way this movie could capture that feeling base on what i saw.

"More about setting than plot" is a good way to describe the games.

The poster shows the main character wielding fire blades, but the monster featured on said poster is immune to fire.

Uh-huh-huh, uh-huh-huh, you said "shocked."

I know marketing people are probably not on the same level as the people actually making the movie and are prone to oversights like spoiling the movie or lying about context...

...but that's just plain stupid of them.
