Honestly, why didn't this film take notes from Detective Pikachu if they wanted to set it in the modern world so bad?
They could've given us a modernized hunting world instead of a glorifying military documentary

I think the script for this was being written before Detective Pikachu was announced.

Who would you rather watch fighting a giant monster: A bunch of medieval knight weilding giant weapons in glorious melee combat or a bunch of soldiers with guns shoot it from a far?

Well the Hunters do use cannons on the bigger monsters. Plus the Bowgun.
But seriously, this could be way cooler if it was Attack On Titan style acrobatic combat against the monsters like normal.
My guess is that the filmmakers don't think people would take the medieval style knights and tiny cat people seriously so they do this instead, which makes people even less likely to take them seriously and angers existing fans of the games.

This movie looks worse with The Suicide Squad completely embracing the more ridiculous elements & costumes of its source material.

It's always strange to me when film makers take out all the things that are interesting and unique about and IP and then expecting people will love the film despite it have nothing that made people love that IP in the first place in it, the latest victim probably the Artemis Fowl series.
E.T technically is a Isekai movie
A lot of times what happens is that they have an existing original script (say, "modern military fights monsters") and then they get the rights to an IP and merge them together. I have no idea if that's what happened this time, but it could be.

Probably both. It's like how originally the Paramount executives said "Well yeah, the Sonic design looks creepy, but the general public will love him, who cares what the Sonic fans think?"
And then not only did the general public not love the Sonic design but then SEGA got involved too and said "This looks really fucking creepy, please don't make our mascot be a creepy goblin, change it."

Huh, looks like Gore Magala is in this, if I'm not mistaken. Doesn't seem like the Frenzy Virus is present in the trailer; could've made some jokes about Milla Jovovich having to deal with another virus in a Paul Anderson-directed film.

Credit where its due. The militaries are getting pretty much destroyed and I'm all for it. Plus, the monsters being done justice in the design department is nice.

God, I've never played Monster Hunter and even I feel insulted.
... Of course, these people already crapped over a franchise I am deeply familiar with, so I'm not really surprised about that.
