Event Horizon is 2/3 of a fantastic movie. He's capable of making good movies, he just... doesn't most of the time.
In fairness, "normal person gets transported to a strange world" is a pretty common plot and is successful in some regards. Even Mortal Kombat technically does this with characters like Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Jax Briggs and Kurtis Stryker.
Seriously, how easy would it be to just make an action movie about the Hunters taking down some enormous and threatening monster like an Elder Dragon or something?
That'd take the suits not being idiots looking down on an entire medium.
True, it's so simple.
How can directors and writers not do something so simple?
Actually, does anyone else think the plot of this movie is more of a Spiritual Adaptation of Gate? A modern military force going into a strange and fantastic land?

Given what I've heard about Gate, that's even worse.

Yeah, Gate has the misfortune of being written by a right-wing man in Japan, which means that Japan is always right, everyone else is trying to steal its glory, and the military is the most badass thing ever.
Done correctly and without political bias, it might have been interesting, but "Modern military stampedes over primitive civilization" can only be interesting for so long, not to mention it smacks of colonialism, especially given the author's political views.

Don’t forget the otaku pandering. I recall the main character has a harem of attractive women after his dick.
Plus I’m pretty sure watching a modern technologically advanced military stomp a relatively primitive fantasy army should start getting old after the 1st battle or so. What’s the point of it if there’s no actual conflict or tension?

That is not entirely true, there are medieval worlds that are indeed powerful, like the Diablo video game.

That’s true but that’s not what’s going on in Gate.
The medieval fantasy setting portrayed there is completely impotent in the face of a modern military.
But yeah, the harem thing is also a problem with most isekais. Guy from our world goes to a fantasy world and often gets a group of female companions in the space of the first few episodes.
It's one of the things I hate the most about the genre.
Monster Hunter: Has interesting lore, set ups for good plots set in it's world and various lands to explore.
Execs: LOL Military Isekai

Ever wonder if some people in Hollywood just have a US military fetish or something?

I mean, with how many pro-military movies get released, it's kinda obvious.
The military does offer them a sizable grant.
x3 I don't think it's even the US military in this case. Wasn't it the UN?
Yeah, the Pentagon plays big money to portray the military positively.
To the point where when one movie portrayed a soldier fragging his sergeant after an entire movie of him fucking up, the Pentagon pulled funding.
Michael Bay gets a lot of military funding especially in his Transformers movies.
We got posters featuring Milla Jovovich◊ and Tony Jaa◊ now.
Yeah, you forgot this movie was happening, didn't you?
Well people were trying to forgot I think.
I admit my needs from Paul Anderson movie are sexy ladies kicking ass and game homages.
Lifelong Resident Evil fan and completely confused why people don't love the movies as much as I do. Then again, I'm trying not to go with the idea they actually wanted a note for note adaptation of the games which I can't understand as a reason.

I don't like them as movies because I think they're kind of nonsensical and difficult to follow. Even as "popcorn films", I just find them unfulfilling. The fact that they have little connection to the games beyond the surface level is just more reason.
