No wars anywhere isn't an achievement? As I've said before, I've wondered whether the Brothers would even consider this to be "fighting among yourselves."

'

Rasing Atlas was clearly a mistake that allowed the creation of an elitist, exploitative society'

I dont if I'ed put that on Opzin to be honest. To me that ignores the fact that the people of the region have always been...going to be nice and say abit flawed.

It was Mantle who had the bright idea of trying to shut down curtural expression to keep the Grimm at bay after all.Plus World of Remant shorts show that some of the kingdom problems (Slave labour for example) existed long before Altas was founded.

Necessity may be the mother of invention. But it seems to have dulled the Kingdoms moral compass in the process

Do you guys think things have gone From Bad to Worse so far in this volume?

I don't think so? Everything's followed a pretty logical progression this volume. From Bad to Worse is for things like the Flood, where the bottom abruptly falls out of an already bad situation.

I'd say things have actually gone from "Oh my god we are fucked up the ass!" to "There's a 75 percent chance that we are gonna fucking die". Salem frankly was the bigger issue with her never ending waves of Grimm zerg rushing Atlas and pushing the defenses back, but she's been taken out of commission for the moment, and Monstra's been blown up. Right now, the only threat still here is the (comparitively) less dangerous Ironwood threatening to bomb a city so he can do his nonsensical "Fuck off into space" plan. It's a lot easier to fuck over Ironwood than it is to fuck over Salem. When Salem comes back, then we'll likely be in From Bad to Worse territory.

I really gotta wonder what the people of Remnant had for long-distance communication before the CCT, I really do - for all we know they had Dust-powered telegraphs or radio back during the Great War.

Prior to the CCT, it was radio.

It's covered in the CCT WoR episode. To quote the relevant sections:

Prior to the invention of the CCTS, long range communication was extremely limited. The discovery and development of radio technology allowed for communication within the boundaries of most Kingdoms. But communication with other parts of the world was restricted to the physical delivery of messengers. With every alternative form of communication that was proposed, there seemed to be the perfect obstacle: the destructive nature of the creatures of Grimm severely limited the reliability of ground-based technologies.

It was revolutionary. Like radio, signals were sent and received wirelessly, though the contents of these transmissions were not nearly as limited. Audio, video, images and text were all capable of transmission. Eventually, an entire online web of information was at mankind's fingertips.

Currently, the system is supported by four primary relay towers, each located within a safeguarded area of the kingdoms. These towers allow for wireless communication within a Kingdom through the use of devices such as Scrolls. The signals become less reliable the farther a user travels from the CCT Tower. And although smaller support towers do exist outside of Kingdoms, they are constantly at risk of destruction by the creatures of Grimm.

The indication is that it's considered a mystery in-universe as to where Mantle got the idea from to suppress self-expression and emotion as a method of fighting the Grimm. Of course, the implication is that it was Salem who poisoned the ear the of the King of Mantle, which is how he came up with this idea and became so gung-ho about enforcing it on his kingdom and others.

It's also worth remembering that, at the time Atlas was created, the situation between the two cities was not as it currently is. After the war, Alsius was renamed Atlas and made the seat of the all the soldiers coming back from the war. So, the soldiers were drafted to 'give back' to the people of Mantle by training Huntsmen to protect society. Meanwhile, Mantle would concentrate on R&D, which had been phenomenally successful during the war at revolutionising Dust technology and weapons, to produce technology and innovation for the betterment of society, starting with developing technology to help the new Huntsman Academy.

So, at the time Atlas was raised into the sky, Mantle was still the seat of government and R&D while Atlas was the 'give back to society' plan — Huntsmen training to protect society.

The Atlas WoR episode suggests that this idea wasn't simply successful, it was too successful. The Academy expanded at an unprecedented rate, which allowed them to secure the surrounding territory, so the military decided to move from Mantle to Atlas. Because the military had abandoned Mantle in favour of Atlas, and R&D was already focussing itself on improving the Academy, R&D decided to follow suit and relocated to Atlas.

Once R&D had moved to Atlas, residential areas began cropping up. At this point, Atlas was becoming so self-sustaining that the government decided it was being left behind. Its solution was to move from Mantle to Atlas. What was left behind in Mantle was a gutted shell of people who couldn't afford to move to Atlas.

So, basically what happened was that Atlas was created as an aspirational project centred on the Huntsman Academy creating a space for Mantle to breathe and grow in a new society-focussed way. The Huntsman Academy was so successful, the military decided to move in and take over. They pulled R&D after them, which created the need to start providing residential housing for all the academy, military and R&D workers. So, Atlas was suddenly the military and Big Tech region, which made the government nervous enough to move into the area to join them.

So, instead of a peaceful society that used Atlas as a way of learning from its mistakes prior to and during the war, the military decided to take over the Academy and begin the process of ensuring that Atlas would repeat all of Mantle's mistakes.

It's no wonder the other kingdoms didn't like the military's stranglehold on the Academy. They could see history repeating itself.

But I agree that it's not entirely right to blame Ozpin for how things turned out. He tried to separate the military from the system, but ultimately failed. The truth here is that Salem got her claws into Mantle so deeply that Ozpin couldn't quite flush all the poison from the wounds she left behind.

What we're seeing unfold in the Atlas Arc — and Ironwood himself — is part of the kingdom's still-festering wounds from the Great War.

Episode's out.

That was a really, really, really intense fight scene, for all that it lasted less than a minute. And that was in the first five minutes?! And the Vault, the Staff, the dude, the everything! PENNY! Holy fucking shit. I think this might be my new favorite episode, or at least tying with The Lost Fable.

It's weird how the solution was there staring us in the face the whole time. Ruby and pals just jack the Staff of Creation and use it to cheat code their way to victory.

Lol Ironwood got smashed within the first few minutes.

I have no idea if I should be calling this clever of a cop out.

[up]Honestly I was talking more about the staff cheat code, more than Ironwood losing.

For Ironwood just bum rushing him with the element of surprise and superior numbers, was a pretty fun solution and I'm not so sure he won't get a proper showdown in the next couple of episodes.

Honestly, I don't think we'll get much more from Ironwood this season. I think most Atlas character arcs will continue in Vacuo. I think he's going to turn hero again.

HOLY CRAP THAT WAS TOTALLY WICKED.

Ironwood knows Penny's going to self-destruct right?

The length of the fight is going to piss people off, but Reality Ensues, 6 versus one is too hard for anyone to handle. Ironwood holding back a beast like that was dope though.

The fandom was right after all, RWBY couldn't save Atlas and Mantle. Technically. But, as a certain ninja show once said, it's the children who would grow up to take care of the future. And as a quote from someone that's probably famous once said, "it's not the place, but the people." So save the people who make the place a reality, not the other way around. So in the end, RWBY was right, they just needed to take a different approach.

Who shut down CCT...Watts?

We're going to see Sun speaking again soon! A Sun vs Mercury fight would be so cool!

There's this discussion that in RWBY, that I've seen spiral with Emerald that only the women get Heel–Face Turns and that just makes me ask the question, why is RWBY like the only show people want this to be a requirement too? Avatar had 6 redemptions that were equally 3 and 3, Gravity Falls had Gideon and Pacifica, Star had Bullfrag, the Diamond in Steven Universe still aren't liked, Bakugan's redeemed villains throughout all 6 (yes I'm counting the reboot) has had like 20 guys and 3 girls, Dragon Ball was mostly guys, Precure's usually redeems most of the villains regardless of gender, hell Konan was the only girl from Naruto and people were pissed she didn't get to do more, and One Piece & and Yu Gi Oh have so much, it doesn't even matter. No other show I've watched has had this debate this heated before.

Crap I just realized what happened to Pietro and Maria? Are they still stuck in Atlas?

Someone's going to fall, aren't they. Already, place your bets everyone, who's going to be the victim?

...I actually wasn't expecting the Emerald scene. I feel like I really should have. And while it was obvious that Marrow was at least coming close to the last straw for Winter, I had to scroll back when she attacked.

I'm... still not sure what happened with Penny? The "do hugs always feel this warm" bit makes me think she's more organic now, but why would her organic body be permanent? When Ambrosius made the pocket dimension, I was half expecting her skin to slough off like a Terminator, but it's what's left of her old chassis that disappears? Didn't Pietro make that?

Are we going to Vacuo already? I had thought we'd be in Atlas through the end of V9. Unless V9 is going to take place in the pocket dimension, the same way V6 took place on the road/in Argus.

...that was a joke, but come to think of it, we know someone is going to fall, and we don't know what'll happen when they do...

So we are doing Ragnarok. I guess V9 opens with half of them being killed by Carmine.

[up] Pietro and Maria are on Amity.

I think it's clever. This is thinking laterally, taking everything that they already had, and putting all the pieces in the right order.

The show's main theme shines through - when they work together, people can do amazing things; divided, they are vulnerable. You can't even say that Ironwood did a bad showing here - it was a six vs one ambush/betrayal, but that just shows how much the cast considered him a threat.

It was established last volume that the Staff can create any one thing at a time, so it makes sense there'd be other limitations - and 'you gotta have a clear idea of how you would make that' is a pretty big one, along 'he cant destroy anything' and 'no bringing people back from the dead' (ironic how Ambrosius is so much more like Genie than Jinn is).

Taking those into account, the solutions to the virus and Atlas falling feel right. They have Penny's schematics, and they have the strange otherworldly spaces of the Vaults along the city's evacuation plans. I've seen some posts saying this is essentially using the Ship of Theseus to save Penny.

I guess if Ambrosius had been a Jackass Genie he could have gone 'without her robot parts she's a soul without a body, your destruction isnt technically my responsibility, off to the afterlife you go'. But he wasn't - he's a Literal Genie who went out of his way to warn the users of this fact, and who clearly appreciated Penny's entire existence.

It could have gone terribly wrong if this was any other kind of story, but it was worth the risk - if team RWBY had tried anything else Penny would probably have self-destructed anyway - so they might as well have tried it.

God, and there's still two episodes left.

Now, I might be wrong, but hasn't the Staff of Creation been built up for 2 whole seasons now?

[up]yep. I would classify it as such if the Relic was introduced in this chapter but it was brought up multiple times. Just because its unexpected or not the end result that they want doesn't make it a Deus ex Machina

[up][up]A lot of people use that term without actualy knowing what it means

[up][up][up][up][up] It's funny you mentioned Precure there since the last season redeemed none of it's villains and killed them all off instead (although that's pretty outside the norm for that franchise).

[up][up][up][up]Penny's organic body is just a side effect of whats left behind when her new body was made, the robotic one that shut down was what he created (you can see it denigrating when they use the staff again). How that somehow turned her real body human wasn't well conveyed though. It's arguably the only thing about the staff that's truly an ass pull.

[up][up]Reminds that back during the V3 final I saw someone unironically say that "a Deus Ex Machina that is foreshadowed, is still a Deus Ex Machina" lol.

I mean if someone just wants to complain about the staff being a convenient get out of jail free card then maybe they have a point. But any one who throws around the term Deus Ex Machina has no idea what they are talking about.

Okay, I love Ambrosius. Dude is eccentric beyond belief, but he is such a Large Ham it's amazing. Though, considering his design, I guess all of the spirits look like genies. Especially since he seems to be bored at the idea they thought everything through to the letter, making him look more like a Jackass Genie.

I guess there was no way around it. Atlas had to fall. It's just the Unspoken Plan Guarantee is broken. Cause at that exact moment, the signal is cut thanks to Watts. And while this gateway to Vacuo is a good idea, the fact Ambrosius says "Don't fall." is not a good sign. Especially since, with Cinder hiding amidst the refugees and Watts cutting the signal, it's more than likely Neo is in the refugees too, and a fight will break out there, with the protags at a disadvantage due to not wanting to fall or knock any civilians off, but Cinder, Neo, and Watts not caring about that.

I would say the Ironwood fight was an Anti-Climax, but I'm fairly certain that's the point. That for all his talk and grandstanding, he was just a Big Bad Wannabe. That when he runs out of troops, out of leverage, he's nothing more than a single man with a pair of guns. No combat oriented Semblance, no real fighting tricks, even his cybernetics aren't much to help him. He's just a single man, alone, against six skilled fighters. It's only natural he go down easily. Granted, I fully expect him to wake up as Atlas finally crashes, so he can watch as his kingdom falls to ruin. At least Jacques gets to die too.

And making Penny human just fucked everyone over. The Maiden Powers are tied to her soul. Penny is now purely human. Pietro's ability to revive Penny worked because she was a Robot Girl and had cores that maintained her memories. But now she's human, she doesn't have the cores anymore, and it looks like she doesn't have her enhancements or even Floating Array anymore, making it that much easier for her to be killed and the powers to be taken by someone like Cinder, and likely impossible for Pietro to revive her. Meaning, if the whole "Winter Maiden Nora" theory is to pan out... Penny has to be Killed Off for Real.

  • It may still be possible for Pietro to bring her back, but she'd need immediate medical attention then since she can't just have damage repaired anymore. Chekhov's Gun and all would note that Pietro showing he only has a certain level of aura left before it kill him being brought up should have relevance in the long run, so it may be possible for Pietro to bring Penny back one more time... of course at the cost of his life and the caveat they need to get her to a doctor ASAP.

Nice Freeze-Frame Bonus showing Atlas propaganda with a younger Cordovin but the exact same looking Colossus. That thing is really out of date, and it just shows why she is the way she is, since she's pretty much Atlas' propaganda poster child. She is quite literally a relic of a bygone age.
On a lighter note, Penny going hug crazy was adorable. As was Marrow trying to look over Winter's shoulder and failing at being nonchalant.
