I asked this about a month ago and nobody responded, so I'm gonna ask again - since Nooroo from Miraculous Ladybug got 10 yeas and 0 nays for being The Woobie, can I (or someone else) put him back on the YMMV.Miraculous Ladybug page as a woobie?

All right, wrote him up. I don't know how you thought I'd need 300 words, I came in a little over 100.

  • Nooroo, the kwami of the Butterfly Miraculous, is enslaved by Hawk Moth and forced to aid him in a terrorist campaign against Paris against his will. His relationship with Hawk Moth is routinely shown to be emotionally and occasionally physically abusive; he is forbidden contact with the outside world, not allowed to be more than a few feet away from Hawk Moth, and yelled at whenever he questions Hawk Moth's decisions, and he has had his mouth magically shut on two separate occasions when he has truly angered Hawk Moth. Finally, he is completely powerless to save himself and can only wait for Ladybug and Cat Noir to bring him salvation.

Okay, I'm going to assume for now that we're in agreement re Karen (although technically she only has four downvotes, including mine; anyone care to make it official?)
I'm going to move onto the sixth Outnumbered candidate: Jane.

Who is Jane?

Jane is a neighbour of the Brockmans. At the start of the series she is (like practically every other adult character who isn't Pete or Sue, it seems like) going through a messy divorce, and it seems to have severely affected her self-confidence.

What is her predicament?

We first meet Jane in a Season 1 episode when they are babysitting her daughter, Alexa (a friend of Karen's), after school, but she's over an hour late picking her up, and when Sue tries to contact her, her phone keeps going to voicemail. When she eventually arrives, with an overly-apologetic can-you-ever-forgive-me smile and a flood of excuses, Sue — despite knowing it's probably a mistake — takes pity on her and invites her in for a cup of tea. She talks about the lousy week she's having; her ex, Nick, is putting pressure on her ("I won't bore you with the details...") When they finally do manage to ease her and Alexa out of the door, Angela turns out to be on the doorstep, and she and Jane start chatting about Spain. It looks like she's made a new friend, but after a fade out/in, Angela is clearly desperate to get away.
In Season 2 she reappears, this time having to drop off Alexa in the morning so they can look after her before school, but despite them giving her a time half an hour earlier than they wanted, she still turns up late. Her ex-marital problems are getting worse; Nick called her up to hassle her about child maintenance. She learns that Pete is attending a friend's funeral, which sets her off about how Nick couldn't relate when her uncle died because everything had to be about him. She also asks if they can look after Alexa in the evening ("I know it's cheeky of me...") They try to claim they've got an evening out planned and will be getting a babysitter in, but the story ends up unravelling; Jane demands to know if they have a problem with her. Sue tries to explain, as gently as possible, that it's hard for them to work around her bad timekeeping — which causes Jane to break down in tears, admitting she's a useless friend and a useless mother. At the end of the episode, we learn that Sue has now agreed to look after Alexa for the weekend.
In the Christmas 2009 episode Jane is invited over for dinner. She's on her own for the holidays, as Alexa is staying with her father, following threats of legal action. (Considering we don't see Alexa again, it's likely he manages to get sole custody.) He repeatedly texts her to gloat about this. We don't see the texts, but Pete does, and he describes the contents as "really nasty". As a present, she has bought a goat on their behalf for a village in sub-Saharan Africa, which doesn't impress Karen — although, once Jane admits it's more a present for the villagers than the Brockmans, she's satisfied, as she has plenty of presents of her own. Despite everything, though, Jane does actually manage to put her problems aside for a while and ends up having a good time, and joins them for a sing-song at the end; this is actually the only point in the show where she looks genuinely happy.
Jane's life in general is clearly one catastrophe after another. Following the breakdown of her marriage, she goes through a series of failed relationships; the only time she manages to find a decent boyfriend it very nearly gets ruined by, er, Pete and Sue (they got some details mixed up and provided her with erroneous information). This does get sorted out by the end of the episode, but it doesn't last. On one occasion she accidentally leaves the bath running and ends up destroying her house. In the Christmas 2012 episode she comes to the Brockmans' party despite having the norovirus, because she can't bear to be on her own; she takes what she thinks is Imodium, but is actually strong painkillers; on top of the alcohol she's consumed, this lands her in hospital.

Can she defend herself?

Nope.

Is she a Jerkass?

Jane is pretty self-involved and often neglectful of her daughter, but it's not really her fault, given how miserable her life is; she means well, but nothing ever seems to work out for her. While she can be somewhat of a chore, she doesn't really deserve any of the crap she goes through, and the show doesn't pretend otherwise.

Sympathy Standard?

Ordinarily I'd have no problem categorising her as a Woobie; her life is basically an ongoing disaster area. The trouble is that her problems are frequently (by design) so over-the-top it's impossible to take seriously. That list of failed relationships I mentioned includes a convicted thief, a bigamist, two jihadists and an accused Serbian war criminal. I said before that Outnumbered wasn't a Sadist Show, but if Jane were the main character, it probably would be. At the same time, though, there's some very real pathos there, such as when she says to Pete, "You're looking at what happens when all the confidence gets knocked out of a person."

Verdict?

Personally I want to say yes, but it's a difficult one; I feel like she skirts the line between this trope and The Chew Toy.

I'm looking to update the Woobie entry for Cytus II. The entry, Aroma White, has had more revealed about her in the most recent update that arguably make her even more tragic. There's also the fact that her true name was revealed.

Here's the original entry:

  • PAFF (real name Aroma White) is a Shrinking Violet with a traumatic past. On the day she was to make her debut as an Idol Singer, a car crash left her comatose for months and missing most of her memories after waking up. Although she went on to have a massively successful idol career after her awakening, the amnesia haunted her, to the point where she had an existential crisis: what if she wasn't the person she thought she was? The possibilities haunted her to the point where she ran away from home, leaving behind her life of fame and luxury out of fear that it wasn't hers. And then there are the implications that her fears may be founded and that she may be another person brainwashed into taking Aroma's place, or that she was sexually assaulted or even raped by Noah, who she saw as a parental figure. It's hard to not feel sympathy for PAFF's plight given all she had to go through.

It has since been revealed that the Aroma described here is actually a girl named Kaori Minamiya, meaning that her fears are actually completely founded. And that leads to the description of Kaori's life, in which she was kidnapped from her home as part of a human trafficking operation by a criminal organization known as the Mogura, then stripped of her original identity both physically via Magic Plastic Surgery and mentally via a memory transfer. There's also the revelation that the original Aroma was given only a month to live after a failed operation, meaning Kaori was intended to live Aroma's life, and her returning to her old self would mean Aroma basically dying.

There is also more, less spoiler-y content that can be added to the entry such as how she was subjected to some pretty vicious bullying after returning to The Academy due to a rumor circulating that she was faking her amnesia to create early publicity, or how her sister kept her from keeping contact with any of her few old friends or making any new ones because she was terrified of losing her again, meaning that she just lived for her career prior to running away.

Do I have permission to alter the entry?

Yes to Gorons, Tails and Jane.

And with that, here are my next two writeups.

Mother 3:

  • Lucas is the closest thing the game has to a main hero. At first, Lucas lives a happy life with his family, but all that changes when one of the previously friendly Dragos controlled by Pokey Minch's army, murders Hinawa, Lucas' mother. Then after the news is broken to his Doting father Flint, he breaks down in grief filled rage and nearly strikes his own sons with a stick. With both his mother and father out of commission or left the village of Tazmily, Lucas' brother Claus, goes to investigate but is kidnapped and brainwashed by the Pigmasks. Lucas goes on a seemingly hopeless journey to reunite with his brother and father. Through this he experiences many deaths by the Pigmasks including by the end having to kill his own brother, who was the Masked Man, but Lucas couldn't bring himself to do it, and so Claus ended his own life to spare Lucas when Pokey's control proved too much to handle. Throughout the journey, Lucas constantly breaks down in tears and just wants his family back as he is an emotionally crippled pre-teen.

The World Ends with You

  • Neku Sakuraba is the 15 year old snarky protagonist of the game. At first he's extremely cold to the party members on his journey through the Reaper's Game because as it turns out according to Another Day, he lost his best friend before dying and couldn't handle the grief so he shunted himself off from people. It's only through Shiki Misaki's coercing that he is able to trust anyone again. When they win the first game, Shiki gets taken as his entry fee because the Big Bad knew her connection to Neku and he is forced to play another game. There he examines Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu, his enigmatic new partner's memories and finds he was killed by Joshua. When he is about to confront Joshua about this, he is ignored and Joshua instead helps him defeat Sho Minamimoto but is supposedly killed by Minamimoto's Level i Flare, revealing that Joshua was shooting at Minamimoto who apparently shot Neku. Later on, it's revealed Joshua is the Composer and the guy who Neku stopped was trying to save Shibuya's UG. Then Neku finds out Joshua really did kill him, and after defeating Megumi Kitaniji, Neku is given a game of quick draw. Despite all the hell Joshua put him through, Neku is unable to shoot Joshua and gets shot instead... again. Afterwards though Neku returns to life and finally has friends again and truly trusts them now, and lamenting that while Joshua was a jerk, he still spared Shibuya.

Fair warning: I can get pretty emotional and take things too seriously.

    The Woobie
  • Danganronpa: Kiyotaka Ishimaru (a.k.a. Taka) is one of the most morally good students at Hope's Peak Academy, being a kind, albeit Hot-Blooded youth who is one of two victims in Case 3 of Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc. His life begins with his family's damaged reputation, resulting in Taka finding it hard making friends, instead focusing on becoming a model student to restore his family's honor. Hope's Peak scouted him and tried to avoid the other students. He started opening up to people when Makoto entered the academy. Like the other students, he was sealed within the academy, and also had his memory his academy time there prior to Makoto's arrival, to spare him the tragedy of losing his family, unaware that Monokuma(controlled by the real Junko Enoshima) infiltrated the school and murdered the headmaster. The other students see him found him an annoyance at worst, and hot-blooded at best. After a dare with Mondo Owada, with Makoto being too afraid to stay out of fear for their lives, Taka makes his first real friend at Hope's Peak and completely breaks when Mondo is convicted of Chihiro Fujisaki's murder, and subsequently executed by Monokuma. Kiyotaka even risked his life by voting himself as the culprit rather than Mondo. After that, he ended up completely mute until one day, he found out about Alter Ego. After taking parts of Mondo's personality (as in Kiyondo), Kiyotaka vowed to protect and apologized to Alter Ego for his master's death. Unfortunately, this caused Hifumi to grow jealous and kill Taka. When the murder was discovered, Taka even ends up forgotten, even by the one who vowed to bring his murderer to justice. The only one who didn't forget was Hina.
  • Miraculous Ladybug: Nooroo, the kwami of the Butterfly Miraculous, is enslaved by Hawk Moth and forced to aid him in a terrorist campaign against Paris against his will.
  • Weight of the World:
    • Oscar Pine was a shy, friendless farmboy until he woke up with Ozpin in his head. He joins the fight against Salem but knows he is not the best fit to be the group's leader like Ozpin expects. RWBY and the others mistrust Ozpin after finding out about his past and fear he may needlessly sacrifice their lives so they keep their distance from Ozpin, which makes them isolate Oscar too. Any time they approach Oscar, they want to talk to Ozpin. Oscar becomes very withdrawn after RWBY etc. isolate him. He can tell the others mistrust Ozpin and feels uncomfortable asking for anything from them. Oscar joins the team in invading the Transformation Institute as his first mission, and sees horrible things including the execution of innocent prisoners. He is traumatized by the Institute mission but is not comfortable asking for help, and keeps his trauma to himself. Americanote  is the first person to treat Oscar as only Oscar and approach him to talk to him, not Ozpin. When America inquires how Oscar is feeling after the Institute, Oscar starts crying and says he feels guilty about not saving anyone. America encourages Oscar, only for Ozpin to take control of his body mid-conversation. Oscar discovers Ozpin is slowly taking over his body and will soon take control permanently, —destroying Oscar's soul in the process— when he wakes up standing over America with a knife in his hand. Ozpin tried to murder Oscar’s only friend to get more power while Oscar was unaware. Oscar manages to wrestle control from Ozpin and saves America. He begs to be killed so Ozpin cannot harm anyone else.
    • Italy suffers from extreme self-confidence issues and anxiety. He wants to prove that he is strong, both to others but mostly to himself. His failure at the simulation causes him to break down in tears. Italy willingly returns to Remnant because his brother is among the captured nations. He is still terrified but can’t bear the thought of leaving Romano's rescue to someone else. He can barely make himself shoot America and has to keep telling himself that it is the only way America can "fall asleep" and heal. He weeps as he does it even though he knows America will be fine later. Weiss screams at him and demands to know what he’s done and he tonelessly says America will "sleep and heal now". Both times Italy faces Ruby, he’s terrified and crying as he distracts her but does not give up because he knows he has the best chance of surviving her assault. He suffers from guilt from all of his failures which include Germany and Prussia’s injuries, the failed Grimm simulation, accidentally leading Ruby towards his friends instead of away, and failing to save Canada from the Warden Grimm. Every time he tries to prove himself, he messes something up or needs to be rescued. He has never had a full "win". He learns to act despite his fear, though he still believes he is a coward.
    • America personifies the United States and is the brother of Canada and England. He is captured by Atlas, experimented on, vivisected, and has Vale's Aura forced into him. This makes Salem and other factions target him since Vale’s Aura is the only thing that can unlock the Relic Of Choice. He cannot inform anyone of this and must face a possible Death of Personality on his own. His brothers and best friend don't know about what he has gone through and misunderstand his motives, believing he wants to help Remnant so he can save the day. They chide him for his "selfishness", causing him to run off in tears. Throughout the series he is betrayed by Neo, Roman, Mercury, England, Russia, Penny 2.0, and Ozpin, the last of whom attempts to murder him in order to gain more power. He is also tortured by Atlas and the ex-soldier, who leaves him with permanent scars. America endures emotional, physical, and verbal abuse from both enemies and friends. Some berate him for being willing to sacrifice too much for Remnant, while others believe he is not doing enough and should be willing to kill himself to keep Remnant safe. Ruby also blames him for Blake and Qrow's deaths and tells him You Should Have Died Instead. His attempts to heal and recover (which includes going to therapy) all end with more betrayal and trauma. All the trauma he suffers causes America to eventually break down. He loses all sense of self-worth, falls into a depression, and begins to genuinely believe his life is worth nothing so he should do what Ozpin says and kill himself to stop Salem from winning. Despite this, he continues fighting, though he can no longer deny he is uncertain whether he wants to live anymore.
    • Yang, of Team RWBY, is Ruby's older sister and Blake's partner. She is tricked into attacking Alfred on live television for the whole world to see. She is put in jail and awaits either expulsion or trial depending on whether Alfred survives. The news circulates the story, with many condemning Yang and calling her a monster. Yang loses an arm protecting Blake from Adam. When she wakes up, Blake has left without a word. Civilians fear Yang because they think she escaped jail and is running to Mistral's criminal underbelly to escape justice. She copes with this by reassuring herself that Ruby knows she is innocent. Mercury mocks her about her attack on Alfred and congratulates her on her brutality, she holds back tears. Blake appears at Haven but Yang realizes Blake did not go there to return to Team RWBY. She was only there because of the White Fang. Blake admits she would not have returned to the team if they had not run into each other at Haven. She would still be chasing the White Fang. Blake does not trust RWBY to protect themselves, to help her, or to her secrets. This deeply hurts Yang, who thought she and Blake were close. Once Blake learns her lesson and changes her ways, Yang happily forgives her and their friendship is restored. Yang's Uncle Qrow dies in the attack on Frontier. She cannot believe he is dead but tries to remain strong for Ruby's sake. A couple of days later, Blake is killed protecting Yang from the Warden Grimm. Yang brokenly laments how Blake died needlessly after she promised to never leave her again. She keeps fighting in Blake’s memory but blames herself for her partner's death.

    Jerkass Woobie
  • Castlevania (2017):
    • Lord Dracula himself is a Tragic Monster much as he is in the games: a roaming, misanthropic monster who found a chance at happiness when he met the healer Lisa, only to witness Lisa cruelly taken and burned at the stake for supposed heresy. Left so broken and despondent he even turns against his own son Adrian—or Alucard—Dracula pledges to take humanity to the grave with him, reduced to depressed lethargy as he waits for an end long denied to him. Dracula's tragedy shines forth most prominently in the final battle where he completely breaks when his battle with Alucard takes him into his son's childhood bedroom: "I'm killing our boy."
    • Aide to Lord Dracula he may be, Isaac is presented as a much more tragic, vulnerable character than his caricatured video game iteration. Isaac was abused by his master when he was still a slave even despite his love for the man and ended up being driven to killing his own master in a hysterical fury when his master cruelly persisted in his abuse after Isaac confessed his feelings. Even as Dracula's unflinchingly loyal ward, Isaac is still thrown to the dirt again when Dracula forces Isaac to leave as the heroes converge to kill Dracula, with Isaac's final scene heavily indicating he's finally done with being kicked around once and for all.
    • Hector, Dracula's other Forgemaster, has been mistreated by society and even his own parents for his powers, with only the dead animals he brings back to life as his only friends. Much more vulnerable and naive than Isaac with standards Isaac doesn't have, Hector's own naivety is taken advantage of by Carmilla who convinces him to betray his own longtime friend, Dracula, before doubling back and ending the second season reducing Hector to her beaten-up slave and pet Forgemaster.
  • Weight of the World:
    • Vale (Amber), the strongest personification on Remnant, won the Great War almost singlehandedly. Her Aura unlocks the Choice Relic, meaning she's hunted by both Salem and Ozpin. Ozpin made Vale decimate the enemy during the war. Her King gets possessed by Ozpin and only she cares. Refusing to work with Ozpin, he tortures her into using her Semblance on what will become the lock for the Choice Relic and its Vault. He unintentionally uses the Choice Relic to make sure she can never speak ill of her "master" again. She flees her Kingdom and hides from Ozpin's men. Vale runs into an envious Mistral, who gets her ambushed by bandits. Mantle, Vale's brother, is the only one she trusts with her location. Thanks to him, Cinder finds Vale and takes part of her Aura, leaving her comatose but aware. She feels it when part of her Aura(her soul) is forced into America before Cinder kills her body. When Cinder dies, her remaining Aura goes to America, merging their souls. They are mostly-amnesiac when Roman, Neo, and Mercury pretend to be friends, but later attempted to kill them in the woods. America regains his memories, splitting their souls. Vale cannot access her Aura or Semblance, or take over America's body. She's rendered a voice in America's head, and cannot save him from danger. He begins suffering from nosebleeds and other ailments and Vale realizes her Kingdom is dying, taking both her and America with it. Vale becomes mostly cold, very pessimistic, and prone to giving up when she believes she'll lose. Rather than share emotions, she lashes out, becoming worse after she realizes she and America are dying. She eventually admits she's frustrated that she cannot help as a voice in his head.
    • England (Arthur Kirkland) is the elder brother of America and Canada, who were abducted within his country. Eventually reuniting with them in another world, America and England argue, and America storms off. Next, England sees his brother hospitalized after being shot. America disappears during the fall of Beacon, forcing England to search for him again. England learns about Vale's Aura being forced into America, which may have caused his brother's Death of Personality. He finds America, who remembers nothing about England except the time England pointed a gun at him. England blames his relationship with America on Vale's influence, also coldly distancing from him until Pyrrha points out how damaged his relationship with his brother was. He tries to abandon his prejudices towards Remnant but cannot quite manage it. He plans to sever America's connection with Vale without America's knowledge. He gains America's trust, which gets shattered when America learns England planned to remove Vale from him, resulting in all of Vale's people (including Ruby and Yang) suffering from Identity Loss. America calls him out and leaves, only to be captured by Atlas soldiers. Regretting what happened, England apologizes to America but finds out his brother is slowly dying inevitably because of Vale. He'd still try to separate America and Vale if he could, this time to save America's citizens from a Loss of Identity if he dies. England is terrified his brothers will be hurt by Remnant more but keeps it to himself. He deeply hates Remnant for what they did to his brothers and is infuriated whenever America does something Atlas "wants" (including keeping the Choice Relic safe from Salem). This causes England to treat America and other Remnant natives with scorn. However, he grows to care for them and their world.

    Iron Woobie
  • Castlevania (2017): Alucard, born Adrian Tepes, is Dracula and Lisa's son. In the first episode alone, with everything seemingly going well for his family after a happy childhood, the Church ransacks his mother Lisa's house and condemns her as a "witch" for being a practiced medic. Adrian's mother is burned alive and his father snaps, his one tether to humanity snapped. Adrian pleaded with Dracula but was tossed aside and horribly wounded, forced to go into hiding as his father rose up an army to destroy all humanity. Flash-forward to the present day and Alucard is awakened by Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades. After a battle with Trevor, and eventually, with Dracula's army on the rise, Alucard swears to destroy his own father, remaining stalwart and unflappable through the majority of the second season but with hints of pure misery he holds back like when Sypha talks to him in the Belmont library, described by Sypha as a "cold spot" sucking out all joy in his presence. In the end, Alucard is the one to stop his own father, witnessing Dracula break down before him when their pitched fight takes them into Alucard's own childhood room, using a board from his old bed to stake him before Trevor finishes the job. At the end of it all, Alucard collapses into tears.
  • Seraph of the End:
    • Yuichiro "Yuu" Hyakuya, The Protagonist, was abused by his biological family due to his supernatural nature. Sent to the Hyakuya Orphanage, Yuu was tested and experimented for them yet he found happiness on his fellow orphans. Surviving the apocalypse and being captured for Vampires, Yuu is forced to a serf life and tries to escape, leading to the murder of his family at hands of Ferid Bathory. Escaping thanks to the sacrifice of Mikaela, Yuu joins the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and trains to be able to avenge his loved ones. During the series, Yuu's true nature, use of his Cursed Gear and traumatic experiences start to erode his humanity, turning him into a danger to others and himself. While managing to achieve small victories such as reunite with Mika, befriend the members of the Shinoa Squad and kill important vampires, Yuu's obsession with family and his loss of humanity remains a question to be answered, yet he continues moving fowards, moved for his own desire to have a family.
    • Mikaela "Mika" Hyakuya, the Deuteragonist, is Yuu's last surviving family. Abandoned by his family and used for the Hyakuya Sect, Mika also loses his fellow orphans in an attempt to escape from the vampires before sacrificing himself to ensure Yuu's escape. Turned into a vampire and forced to work with a species that he hated, Mika started to hate both humans and vampires while also avoiding to drink human blood, surviving with the blood of Krul Tepes and being forced to work alongside his family's murderer. Wishing to reunite with Yuu, Mika manages to escape from the vampires and reunite with him before running away from the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, eventually completing his Vampire transformation after drinking Yuu's blood with his permission. Initially unwilling to work with anyone but Yuu, Mika is forced to accept the help of the Shinoa Squad to protect Yuu and eventually even with his hated Ferid Bathory. Hating his own nature and wishing to become human again, Mika just wants to protect his last surviving family.
  • Weight of the World:
    • Pyrrha Nikos is an aspiring Huntress and international celebrity of Remnant. She'd prefer to be a "normal" Huntress and have friends rather than fame. She accidentally kills Penny, her friend, while the whole world is watching. Because of Penny's death, people fear her, hate her, or blame her for the fall of Beacon since Penny's death drew in the Grimm. While on an airship flight, a little girl recognizes her as the "one who killed the girl with the bow" and calls her a monster. She's taken from her world and everyone she loves and dropped into a new, unfamiliar one, where she is forced to keep her powers in check or risk being arrested by the government. She finds out the people she has been fighting for (Ozpin and Ironwood) lied to her and have done terrible things she cannot justify, making her question her entire purpose in life. Her decision to tackle England and prevent him from stopping America from leaving helped lead to America's latest abduction. Pyrrha holds her emotions in and puts on a smile but is unable to repress the trauma she feels from what happened. She is terrified of her own Semblance because of what happened to Penny and occasionally breaks down but downplays her sorrow and does not let it affect her for too long. She suffers from graphic, bloody nightmares about Penny's death and America's near-Death of Personality, revealing she feels responsible for both. She also feels guilty for mistrusting England and stopping him from going after America (which led to America's recapture at the hands of Atlas).
    • Ruby is the young, optimistic, and cheerful leader of Team RWBY. She loses an eye when she recklessly tries to fight Neo. Her team splits up after the Fall of Beacon. She suffers from flashbacks and panics when a Grimm jabs at her other eye with its beak. All of her friends (with the exception of JNR and WBY) seemingly die in Kuroyuri. She blames herself for their "deaths". Her team fails to get the Relic of Knowledge before Salem's forces and she breaks down in tears. She finds out Qrow lied about her friends' deaths. Ruby also discovers Silver Eyes are a Superpowered Evil Side that make the user go berserk and kill every living thing in sight. Ruby is terrified of losing control. When Qrow is impaled protecting Ruby, making her use Silver Eyes, she hurts and tortures Weiss and Japan before being knocked out. After losing control, she shuts herself in her room and refuses to see anyone. She tells Weiss she recalled everything that happened while she used Silver Eyes and that she enjoyed hurting them. Weiss's reassurances that it wasn't her fail to reach her and she remains afraid of Silver Eyes. She briefly becomes a Jerkass Woobie after Qrow and Blake die. Ruby projects her blame and self-loathing at being unable to save them onto America, saying he should have died instead. Her insults and blame is a factor in him considering suicide. She does not regret her actions until it is too late to make amends since America has been captured.
    • Canada is the younger brother of England and the twin of America. Mantle's Aura is forced into his body in a process so painful that Canada screams himself hoarse. Desperate to forget what he endured, Canada accidentally uses his Semblance to erase his and America's memories of the lab. He is horrified by his power and fears what they say about him. He also realizes he may unconsciously be using it on himself. America's reassurances that he is a good person do not convince him otherwise. Canada gets sick and realizes Mantle is dying and killing him with it. He does not tell anyone and tries to hide his ailing health because he believes no one can save him. His body slowly freezes as the icy winds and snow kill Mantle's dying city. Eventually, he can barely walk. A mine in Mantle collapses and he almost dies. England severs the connection between Canada and Mantle’s people, saving Canada’s life but dooming Mantle's people. In the Transformation Institute, Canada is tortured by Atlas and Emerald with an electric baton. Later, he is infected with Grimm essence. It painfully spreads through his body in vein-like tendrils, which cling to his organs like spiderwebs. It makes Canada increasingly aggressive. He is captured by Salem's Warden Grimm. Emerald then uses the Relic of Destruction to torture him, while Salem also manipulates the Grimm essence inside him to cause him unbearable agony. Canada's thoughts jerk back and forth between pleas for the pain to stop and violent desires that aren't from him. He is aware his mind is breaking and being corrupted but cannot stop the process.

I'm back and since I'm finished a manga, it's time for bringing a character for discussion :P

What's the Work

Elfen Lied is a manga that's becoming one of my favorites of all time (Thanks to Lucy). The story tells us about Lucy, a beautiful girl who is revealed to be the queen of a horned humanoid species known as Diclonius that are capable to telekinetically control invisible hands known as "Vectors" that could brutally kill people, who escaped the research facility that experiments on Diclonius while brutally slaughters people in her own way.

During her escape however, she lost her memories after getting shot by an anti-tank rifle that leaves her injured and unconsciously fell into the ocean. However, after her body was found by two people, Kouta and Yuuka, in a nearby beach, Lucy lost her memories and only could speak "Nyuu". However, this is just the tip of the iceberg and things will start going interesting from there...

Yep, you know who's the character that I'm going to bring right? Meet Lucy everyone!

Who is She/What Has She Done

Considered her role as a Villain Protagonist and she had a bit of a sad moments, I'm going to condense her woobie moments in a sub-bullet but hopefully you can understand. This is in particular order btw:

  • Abandoned by her parents as a child to the point she was taken into the orphanage (Although it was revealed that her mother still tried at her best to find Lucy)
  • Bullied and shunned by the orphanage children, one of them was the infamous Toomoo who not only belittled her because of her horns but also murdered a puppy Lucy befriended, which not only resulted on Lucy brutally murdered most of the kids in the orphanage but also developing a misanthropic state in the present.
  • Manipulated by another personality so that she could become a mass murderer. This was shown as at one point, she was attempting to strangle a boy named Kouta. However, she made a promise to him that one day he need to kill her if she's become a mass murderer (But ended up becoming one for survival reasons as she had no place to return to)
  • Despite her moment with Kouta is considered to be her best day of her life, during the festival, she was seemingly "betrayed" by him considered the lie that he told to Lucy about his cousin so that Lucy's fragile emotion won't be shattered but it happened as she saw Kouta and his cousin together in the festival.
  • When making another friend, Aiko Takada, who is also an inspiring artist, she flees with Aiko so that she won't be captured by the police because of the accidental murder. Unfortunately, it didn't last as Aiko took the bullet to protect Lucy from the guys who wanted to capture her as an experiment despite making a promise that they would paint together. Made it worse that the head experiment, Kurama, said that her friend died (Though it was revealed that she's still alive)
  • Develop another split personality—which is an infant one—after she got captured by the institute for the next 3 years and escaped from it.
  • Even with her split personality and had a seemingly good life with Kouta, she was also a bit mistreated considered there are people who are interested in her. Case in point, the doctor who works at Kouta's college that wanted to rape Lucy so that she could bred an ideal specimens. Not even helping that this guy lied to Kouta about him founding her family.
  • Getting captured by Director Kakuzawa and his soldiers near the end of the manga and said Director also attempts to use Lucy as a new queen for the new race (Like father like son) and was also revealed that he also raped her mother.
  • After her escape however, she does wanted to apologize to Kouta for the things she had done in the past but after Kouta sees that Kurama's arm was ripped thanks to Lucy's actions (Considered she was controlled by her inner voice) and rejected Lucy's words, Kouta decides to protect her anyway because of Kurama trying to shoot her and as a result, Lucy ended up fell into despair and tries at her best to heal him which resulted on her body becoming a grotesque flesh. When the inner voice began to took over her personality, Lucy begs to Kouta that she wants her live to be ended and Kouta did it... Ending her painful life once and for all sad

Anyways, sorry if the summary of the story were in the bullets and correct me if I missed something else.

Sympathy Standard

Honestly, she's not a Complete Monster but you could argue that it's hard to sympathize with her because she's a mass murderer. But here's the thing: Lucy had a truly shitty life even in present and the past and even part of her regrets that she ended up becoming a murderer she ends up now and in the end of the manga, she wants to end her miserable life by letting Kouta killed her in order to prevent more casualties I'm not making this up. That happened in the manga btw so take that as you will.

Can She Defend Herself

No. Sure, she had a powers that could make her easily murder any person who annoyed her but no...She's emotionally fragile at best due to her mistreatment that happened to her.

Final Verdict

Your call. I personally wanted to EP Lucy to spice the cleanup thread up and it would be nice to debate a bit about her inclusion and I personally think she's a keeper for Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds.

Another second candidate to EP for a Woobie. This time is from my favorite Isekai of all time.

What's the Work

Jacking the description when I propose Gelmud as a CM in the CM cleanup thread: That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime is one of my favorite franchise of all time despite a bit overrated (I know they're not compatible with each other but who cares) that tells us the story about a worker named Satoru Mikami who essentially got reincarnated as a Slime in another world after he got stabbed by a criminal when trying to protect his co-workers from harm.

After he befriend a Storm Dragon named Veldora Tempest who become his ally at the end of the day and with the help of a Computer Mechanic known as "The Great Sage", Satoru, now renames himself as Rimuru Tempest, starts his own adventure and essentially becomes Jesus-kun in another world to the point he made a relationships with another monsters and build his own country because why not?

Now, before Rimuru attained a humanoid form, he met an adventurer that ended up becoming one of the most important figure for him. And said adventurer? Meet Shizue Izawa.

Who is She/What Has She Done

I'll be brief about Shizue's description because Mozilla's an asshole:

  • She was a child living in World War II. Got summoned by a demon lord named Leon Cromwell, however she was injured as a result and got separated by her mother. Even before that, she had no relatives and only living with her mother as her father was drafted.
  • Initially Leon didn't find her useful but changed his mind as he let one of the spirits, Ifrit, possess her. Initially doesn't seem bad to the point Shizu become a strong adventurer. But soon takes the toll for the worse as she accidentally burned the girl and the pet that she met which resulted on her resented Leon so badly and use a demon mask to sustain Ifrit's power.
  • Though she was still youthful and a skillful adventurer even in present day and was a teacher to otherworlders that ended up stuck in Slime's world, some of her children are unable to be saved due to their unstable magic powers until Rimuru came along and Ifrit's powers had taken a toll on her and took her consciousness
  • Dies peacefully and let Rimuru took over her body which earns him a new humanoid form. But before that, she was shown a wonderful country Japan has become.

Sympathy Standard

Let's see here: She's a World War II survivor that got summoned but got separated by her mother, possessed by a spirit which causes her to suffer and trying to teach the children who are having a short time to live...Does that answer your question?

Can She Defend Herself

Although despite what happened by her, she does tried at her best to remain confident and tried at her best to defend herself from trouble and accept her life until the end. So I think she's a decent contender for Iron Woobie.

I would like to add to Woobie Species the Nali from Unreal since they are a peaceful race that are being killed/tortured/enslaved etc by the Skaarj and their minions throughout the whole game

What's The Work Unreal

Who Are They/ What Have They Done? The Nali are a peaceful race of four armed aliens native to Na Pali. We don't actually know much about what they were like before the Skaarj invasion, but they apparently have a sort of Cargo Cult due to all the ships that have crashed on their planet, yet also have some gods of their own.

Sympathy Standard

  • Let's see, they are a peaceful race who don't even have weapons yet are constantly being enslaved by the Skaarj (mainly to mine for tarydium) and killed and/or tortured if they resist (including being crucified.) Doesn't get much more Woobie Species than that

Can They Defend Themselves?

  • No, as stated before they have no weapons and are entirely dependent on the Player to save them.
