What's the work?

Carmen Sandiego 2019, a Netflix cartoon

Who are they Carmen Sandiego of the 2019 Netflix series, aka "Black Sheep."

Julia Argent from the same series, an Interpol agent.

Coach Brunt, an instructor at V.I.L.E. academy.

Gray aka Crackle, one of Carmen's former classmates.

Shadow-san, another V.I.L.E. instructor.

Basic description on who the character is.

Carmen is a noble thief. She steals from V.I.L.E. hideouts to draw attention to their wrongdoings and to take them apart from the outside.

Julia in this continuity is an introspective agent more versed in archaeology and history. She takes an objective approach to Carmen's modus operandi and trying to understand her methods for stealing.

Coach Brunt teaches at the academy, on combat training. She is also the most motherly.

Gray is a classmate at V.I.L.E. academy who specializes in weaponizing electricity.

Shadow-san is a teacher at V.I.L.E. academy, for Stealth 101. Also a samurai and expert pickpocket.

What is their predicament?

Though Carmen would probably beat up anyone who pities her, she needs a hug after she finds out that Shadow-san failed her on his pick-pocketing final, and infers that he did it on purpose because the other teachers favor her. Then it goes From Bad to Worse when she learns that working for V.I.L.E. would mean killing recklessly, and she makes the decision to defect and run away, turning her back on terrible people who love her. The only clue she has about her past is Russian nesting dolls, but she's questioning if the story V.I.L.E. told her about being an abandoned baby in Argentina was true. It also doesn't help that compared to most of the students, she's a Child Prodigy, which makes her seem more alone when she defects.

Poor Julia; no matter what she does to convince Chase that Carmen has good intentions, she is brushed off every single time. In Chase's defense, he does realize he's been rude to her in the season finale.

Coach Brunt. Carmen admits that the woman was like a mother to her, who doted on Carmen. She's still a criminal mastermind that enabled Carmen to become a Spoiled Brat. Neither of them saw it coming that "Black Sheep" would turn on Brunt and all of V.I.L.E.

Gray also has this; he just wanted to make more money stealing than fixing lightbulbs. He's genuinely hurt when Carmen defects, and when interrogating her seems to be asking if he did something wrong. It turns out he did, because [[spoiler:it was him firing on an innocent that led to Carmen to defect, and he can't comprehend why Carmen would take issue with it. spoiler:Then he gets caught by Interpol, and V.I.L.E. wipes his memories, so he forgets any criminal behavior that he did while with the agency. Carmen decides it's better if she leaves him alone in his new life and stands him up at a cafe.

Shadow-san when it's revealed that his reason for failing Carmen on purpose was not because of her receiving favoritism from the other teachers, as he claimed, but because he believed she could do better with her life than become a thief. Of course, he could have just told her this upfront rather than angrily telling her that the recklessness and immaturity she shows in class means she'll get killed or become a liability. Turning to crime would change her life forever, and not in a good way. He's regretful when Carmen does defect from V.I.L.E., only to become their most wanted enemy due to her determination to take them down, because she did what he wanted in a dangerous fashion

Can they defend themselves/are they a Jerkass?

Carmen physically can fight — most of her fellow classmates. She cannot measure up to her former instructors, however, including her mother-figure Coach Brunt, who nearly squeezes her to death when Carmen asserts she's not coming home to V.I.L.E. island.

Julia is a non-action agent. It's unclear if she can fight. Her superior Chase usually runs ahead and initiates any fighting. Most definitely a Nice Girl.

With Brunt, she is a criminal who will use brute force . . . but she also loved Carmen like a daughter. Her evil qualities are reduced to off-screen, until she tries to crush Carmen to death in the first season finale. And yes, she can fight.

Gray was a Jerkass given he fired on an innocent man. He was taught to fight, but Carmen can outclass him. But after his mind-wipe he has become a non-violent person and a Nice Guy.

Shadow-san is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. He's very blunt to Carmen about not wanting her to become a thief because of her impulsive nature, because he thinks she shouldn't throw her life away. He can fight, but he can't control Carmen. And he regrets that he encouraged her to take the most dangerous route.

Sympathy Standard?

Fairly high on the sympathy list. Carmen is a kid, compared to most people in the show, and at oldest she can be twenty-one. She also sacrificed her security, status and family to do what's right.

Highly sympathetic. Julia is trying to do her job but she gets no respect. And she comes the closest.

Brunt is very sympathetic. Her care of Carmen never falters until the end, when Carmen refuses to come back to her. And compared to the other teachers, her torturing Chase is the only evil thing we see her doing.

Gray of the five is the least sympathetic. He is nice to Carmen at first and is hurt that she defected, but did fire on an innocent man and was enjoying it. Losing his memory

Shadow-san becomes sympathetic with hindsight. He wants the best for Carmen but was unsure how to express it, and thus didn't tell her outright that she could do better with her life. And he ended up sabotaging the helicopters.

Verdict?

Here's another character for Weight of the World. There is one recent spoiler in here but I'm only mentioning it for context. I'm also covering it because I'm paranoid.

Ruby:

Who is she?

Ruby Rose is a Huntress-in-training and the leader of Team RWBY (Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang). She is two years younger than the other people on her team, and the youngest of the heroes other than Oscar. She was fifteen at the start of the series and is now sixteen or seventeen. She was let into Beacon early because of her skill and because she has Silver Eyes. Her sister is Yang, and her Huntress partner is Weiss.

What has she endured?

Ruby watches her friend Pyrrha accidentally kill her other friend Penny. She recklessly jumps into the fight between Neo and Japan and loses an eye in the process. Her team splits up after the Fall of Beacon and she leads a mission to Mistral. On that mission, every single one of her friends (with the exception of Jaune, Nora, Ren, and WBY who are elsewhere) seemingly die in Kuroyuri, causing her to activate Silver Eyes for the first time before passing out.

She is left out of the Kuchinashi mission and can only listen as Yang (her sister), Jaune, Nora, and Ren are captured by Roman. Ruby has to choose between saving her sister and friends or going after the Relic. Ozpin wants to leave the four to die but Ruby refuses to leave them behind. They rescue Yang and co and head to Haven to save the Relic of Knowledge. Ruby runs in alone to find Neo (Mistral) bleeding out on the floor. The villains retrieved the Relic of Knowledge days ago (three days before Yang was captured). The mission Ruby took part in over the past month was All for Nothing. She finds out her friends are alive, but in turn finds out her beloved uncle lied to her about their deaths.

Ruby overhears her sister confront Ozpin about his secrets and discovers Ozpin foolishly sent Summer (Ruby's mother) on a mission to kill Salem. The mission was a trap set by Salem, which resulted in Summer's death. Ruby also discovers Silver Eyes are a Superpowered Evil Side that make the Silver-Eyed Warrior go berserk and kill every living thing in sight. That is the real reason Ozpin did not allow her to go to Kuchinashi: he feared she may lose control and slaughter her team.

In the Transformation Institute, Qrow is impaled and seemingly killed protecting Ruby from Atlas. Ruby loses control of Silver Eyes and rips Atlas's arm off before going after Weiss and Japan. She throws Weiss through a wall and tortures Japan (by disintegrating patches of his skin with her Eyes) before being knocked out by Italy.

Qrow survives, but is paralyzed from the waist down. Ruby leaves him behind to go on the mission to save Remnant. She hears from America that the town Qrow was in was attacked and everyone in it was killed. A few days later, Ozpin tries to kill America, Pyrrha, and Penny. This makes Ruby activate Silver Eyes once more, though she is quickly stopped by Italy. A couple days after that, Blake is killed while protecting Yang.

Her response?

Ruby tries to keep moving forward and not think about tragedies. "Tries" being the key word. She likes to pretend everything is okay and look at the bright side but cannot always manage it.

It takes her time to adjust to losing an eye and she panics when a Grimm jabs at her other eye with its beak. She blames herself for Pyrrha and co's "deaths". Being left out of the Kuchinashi mission causes her to question her abilities as a Huntress and leader. She comforts Neo as she dies and breaks down into tears upon realizing RWBY etc failed to save the Relic. She notably does not intervene when Yang punches Qrow after the girls find out their friends are alive and he lied about their deaths.

Ruby is shaken by the reveals about Silver Eyes and her mother's death. She is uneasy about losing control but is comforted by her friends. After losing control, she shuts herself in her room and refuses to see anyone. She tells Weiss she recalled everything that happened while she used Silver Eyes and that she enjoyed hurting them. Weiss's reassurances that it wasn't really her and she was not in control fail to reach her.

Ruby feels guilt over Qrow's injury and blames herself for his paralysis. After some encouragement, she pops back to her usual cheerful self though she remains terrified of Silver Eyes. She relies heavily on the talisman England gave her to help suppress Silver Eyes and has half-a-mind to do everything she can to avoid trying to train Silver Eyes (since said training would involve activating them). She would rather not think about them at all.

Ozpin's betrayal really shakes her. She was the last person to defend his questionable actions and think he has good reasons for doing what he does. His betrayal upsets her so greatly England's talisman is completely ineffective. She barely has enough time to point herself away from her friends before she activates Silver Eyes.

As for how she reacts to Blake and Qrow's deaths...

Is she a jerk? Any jerk moves?

The few times Ruby is a jerk, it is through big jerk moves.

First she secretly blames America(Alfred) for Qrow's death since (in her mind) "Salem attacked Frontier to hurt Alfred and that is why Uncle Qrow died". She is the only one awake and lays there while she allows Russia to drag America into the woods. This is after she knows Russia has been harming America whenever they have been alone. (For example, America once gets visible handprint-shaped bruises around his throat, which is one of the mellower things Russia did to him). She could stop them simply by sitting up and letting Russia know someone else is awake, but she doesn't. She acknowledges it was wrong, but is too angry to regret it.

After Blake's death, she denies her grief and lashes out in anger out of a desire to see someone hurt like she's been hurting. She projects her own self-loathing at being unable to save her uncle and friend onto America. She openly blames him for Blake and Qrow's deaths, screams that their deaths were his fault while blaming him for everything else that has gone wrong, and rubs salt in the wound by claiming Neo died waiting for him to save her (which is a flat-out lie). She also comes just short of saying You Should Have Died Instead.

When America runs off a few days later, Ruby sourly thinks "Good riddance". She snaps at and is resentful towards Pyrrha, who tries to guide Ruby into letting herself grieve in a more healthy way (while hinting Ruby is not alone and has people to lean on). Even after Pyrrha loses her temper and chews her out for her behavior, Ruby still silently blames America. She's cold and curt with him, avoids speaking to him whenever possible, and is angry when people try to take his opinion into account on decision-making.

The hypocrisy in Ruby's anger is even more paramount since Blake died for Yang, not Alfred. Ruby just wants someone to lash out at and sees America as the best target. Ruby only stops blaming America, and admits she was projecting and wanted someone to blame after the plan to capture one of Salem's henchmen fails miserably. She gets little if any sympathy points from her actions during this period, in part because her words were a factor in America considering suicide to "keep more people from dying for him" (Ruby's exact words and insults are echoing in America's head as he considers "sacrificing" himself).

The narrative itself also treats her actions during this period as a major jerk move. Ruby is young, and has not dealt with grief of this caliber before, but it does not excuse her behavior.

Verdict?

I'm not sure, but I think Iron Woobie with a mention and explanation in the write-up that she was briefly a Jerkass Woobie. The jerkass part is brief in the grand scale of things (it happened over the course of one book out of five) and came from grief, but her "way of grieving" almost pushed another sympathetic character to commit suicide. Some readers still have not forgiven Ruby for it.

Also, I think I still need a couple more votes for America (Alfred).

Edit: I meant context, not clarification.

Yes to America, Raphtalia and Ruby.

Also expanding the Carmen Sandiego E Ps would be helpful, I wonder if Carmen is too cool to be a Woobie, it seems like a lot of the episodes want us to see Carmen as this cool protagonist rather then someone we are supposed to feel sorry for, sure there are times we are supposed to feel sorry for her, but the show wants to make her cool and impressive instead.

The thing with Carmen is that she's written to be more relatable and sympathetic than cool, compared to her games counterpart. At least in the pilot, we see her as a teen learn that her classmates have been ordered to kill innocents, and finds out that her upbringing was a lie because V.I.L.E. stands for evil. Her escape was also not easy; she had to improvise, use brute force when necessary, and impersonate someone about two heads taller than her. It would have been easier to stay on V.I.L.E. island and ignore what she had seen. Yes, she is cool, but also she sacrificed a lot to do what was right. Carmen reminds me of Rose Quartz from Steven Universe, actually, because their origins are similar.

Carmen from the games is pure evil, cool, and dangerous. Word Detective shows her at her worst, where she kidnaps ACME agents and subjects them to her Babble-On machine. Series Carmen refuses to hurt the Interpol agents going after her, though she can troll them.

Heres my writeup on Ikki after I got some P Ms from Joseph:

Chivalry Of The Failed Knight: Ikki Kurogane, or better known as "The Worst One", is a low-ranked Blazer who is discriminated by his schoolmates. Prior to the main story, he was ignored by his father which resulted on him getting beaten up and gone away from home during the snow after he can't take much of the abuse. Despite being abused, tortured and ignored by several people alike due to his seemingly lack of talent, Ikki manages to get back on his track due to the motivational support from his friends, his lover, Stella and also his great-grandfather, Ryoma Kurogane.

Here are the writeup drafts for America and Ruby. I have also posted them on the Drafts page.

America (Woobie)

  • America is the personification of the United States and brother of Canada and England. He is captured by Atlas, experimented on, vivisected, and has Vale's Aura forced into him. This makes him a target of Salem and other factions since Vale's Aura is the only thing that can unlock the Relic Of Choice. He cannot inform anyone of this and must face a possible Death of Personality on his own. His brothers and best friend are ignorant to what he has gone through and misunderstand his motives, believing he wants to help Remnant so he can save the day. They chide him for his "selfishness", causing him to run off in tears. Throughout the series he is betrayed by Neo, Roman, Mercury, England, Russia, Penny 2.0, and Ozpin, the last of whom attempts to murder him in order to gain more power. He is also tortured by Atlas and the ex-soldier, who leaves him with permanent scars. America endures emotional, physical, and verbal abuse from both enemies and friends. Some berate him for being willing to sacrifice too much for Remnant, while others believe he is not doing enough and should be willing to kill himself to keep Remnant safe. Ruby also blames him for Blake and Qrow's deaths and tells him You Should Have Died Instead. His attempts to heal and recover (which includes going to therapy) all end with more betrayal and trauma. All the trauma he suffers causes America to eventually break down. He loses all sense of self-worth, falls into a depression, and begins to genuinely believe his life is worth nothing so he should do what Ozpin says and kill himself to stop Salem from winning. Despite this, he continues fighting, though he can no longer deny he is uncertain whether he wants to live anymore.

Ruby Iron Woobie

  • Ruby is the young, optimistic, and cheerful leader of Team RWBY. She loses an eye when she recklessly tries to fight Neo. Her team splits up after the Fall of Beacon. She suffers from flashbacks and panics when a Grimm jabs at her other eye with its beak. All of her friends (with the exception of JNR and WBY) seemingly die in Kuroyuri. She blames herself for their "deaths". Her team fails to get the Relic of Knowledge before Salem's forces and she breaks down in tears. She finds out Qrow lied about her friends' deaths. Ruby also discovers Silver Eyes are a Superpowered Evil Side that make the user go berserk and kill every living thing in sight. Ruby is terrified of losing control. When Qrow is impaled protecting Ruby, making her use Silver Eyes, she hurts and tortures Weiss and Japan before being knocked out. After losing control, she shuts herself in her room and refuses to see anyone. She tells Weiss she recalled everything that happened while she used Silver Eyes and that she enjoyed hurting them. Weiss's reassurances that it wasn't her fail to reach her and she remains afraid of Silver Eyes. She briefly becomes a Jerkass Woobie after Qrow and Blake die. Ruby projects her blame and self-loathing at being unable to save them onto America, saying he should have died instead. Her insults and blame is a factor in him considering suicide. She does not regret her actions until it is too late to make amends since America has been captured.

Have any of these examples from Codename: Kids Next Door ever been discussed?

  • Jerkass Woobie
    • The Delightful Children. As it turns out, they were the former members of the KND called Sector Z.
    • Father, after Operation: Z.E.R.O. (and minor moments in "I.T." and "C.A.K.E.D.-F.I.V.E.") Turns out that he spend most of his childhood under an abusive father, constantly treated as The Un-Favorite, and is always afraid of standing up to his dad. After recommissioning Grandfather, he's repaid for his efforts with disdain and humiliated in front of his fellow villains. No wonder why Villain Decay set in, given that most of his self-confidence was shattered into pieces.
    • Chad following the reveal that his betrayal of the KND was a ruse. On one hand, he's still an incredibly egotistical and bitter person, to the point that he tries to kill Nigel in Operation T.R.E.A.T.Y. However, it's easy to feel some degree of sympathy for him given the fact that he willingly sacrificed his own reputation and friendships within the KND; for the sake of his mission.
    • Numbuh 86. Sure, she's an unpleasant Jerkass who constantly gets on people's nerves with her incessant nagging. However, "Operation S.L.U.M.B.E.R." reveals that she never really had any friends because of her unpleasant attitude, with Numbuh 12 being the only person then to befriend her. But once Numbuh 12 makes a Face–Heel Turn and defects to the teens, you can't help but feel a bit sorry for her.

  • The Woobie: Sector Z. "Operation Z.E.R.O." reveals that they were permanently transformed into the Delightful Children, with no hope of turning back into their former selves, robbed of their free will and ripped apart from their families and loved ones who have no idea what became of them. What's worse is that they've forced to turn on their beloved organisation, becoming one of the KND's greatest enemies. When they are forced to turn back into the Delightful Children, their last words to Numbuh 1 is to tell the KND that they missed them.

Help me!

Here is the second-to-last reevaluation for Weight of the World. This time it is Canada. After this one, only Yang is left.

Canada (Matthew/Mattie/Matthieu Williams)

Who is he?

Canada is the personification of Canada, the younger brother of England (Arthur) and the twin of America (Alfred). The Aura of Mantle is forced into his body using Atlas's Aura transfer machine.

What has he endured?

Canada was captured alongside his brother and forced to go through experiments to test which of the twins was "worthy" of getting Vale's Aura. Atlas decides Canada is the "weaker" twin, so the scientists use him as the guinea pig to see if he survives the Aura transfer. All of Mantle's Aura is forced into his body. The process is so painful that Canada screams himself hoarse and he is nearly catatonic when he is pulled out of the machine.

After the twins escape the lab, he and America are hunted ruthlessly for about a month until they collapse near a town called Westwind. Desperate to forget what they endured, Canada accidentally and unknowingly uses his Semblance to erase his and America's memories of the lab.

America withdraws from Canada and keeps secrets from him and Canada has no idea why. He does not find out about Ozpin's faction's ultimatum (that America accept the rest of Vale's Aura) until he finds a Video Will on America's phone (that America left in case the Aura transfer killed him). By the time this happens, America has gone missing since the Fall of Beacon. Canada tries to find him. During the journey, he discovers his memory-erasing Semblance after he accidentally uses it on Russia. He tests it on France (by making him forget America's middle name) and is horrified by his new power. Canada finds America, except America has complete amnesia and a new, wary outlook on life after being betrayed multiple times. One of the few people he still trusts is Canada.

The heroes return to Earth, taking Pyrrha along for the ride. Since America is amnesiac, a lot of pressure is put on Canada from the other nations and Al's boss, who all want answers he cannot give without risking starting a war between Earth and Remnant. He remembers his Semblance (again) and realizes he may accidentally be using it on himself. He also fears his power, though America reassures him that just because his power can be used for evil does not make Canada evil.

Canada begins getting sick and thinks it is because of stress. He soon realizes it is because Mantle (the Kingdom) is dying and killing him with it. He does not tell anyone and tries to hide his ailing health. His body slowly freezes (as in literally ices over) as the icy winds and snow of Mantle kill its dying citizens. It becomes bad enough that he can barely walk.

A mine in Mantle collapses and he nearly dies, but England uses a severance ritual to sever the connection between Canada and Mantle's people, saving his life but dooming Mantle's people to a Fate Worse than Death (They all lose a part of themselves, sicken, waste away, and die). America realizes England intended to use that ritual on him to sever his connection to Vale and runs, only to be captured.

Canada returns with the others to Remnant. In the Transformation Institute, he is overpowered by Atlas and Emerald, who torture him with an electrical baton. They do this because they hate him and want to get a reaction out of England. Canada fights them off and kills Atlas.

Canada finds out America is dying because of Vale just like he was dying because of Mantle. While under the influence of Salem's emotion-manipulating powers, he lashes out at America, calls him weak, and strikes him hard enough to nearly knock him out.

During a fight against Emerald, Canada is infected with Grimm essence. It painfully spreads through his body in vein-like tendrils, which cling to his organs like spiderwebs. He is captured by Salem's Warden Grimm. Emerald then uses the Relic of Destruction to torture him, while Salem also manipulates the Grimm essence inside him to cause him unbearable agony.

His response?

Canada becomes listless and mute after Mantle's Aura is transferred into him. He is in constant pain as his body struggles to adjust to having Mantle's Aura inside him. He spends days doing nothing but shivering and staring blankly at the wall of the twins' cell. When America is taken, Canada snaps out of his catatonia and frees his brother during the middle of the transference of Vale's Aura, escaping with him. After being chased by Atlas forces for weeks, they collapse in the woods. When they wake without their memories of the lab, Canada is cautious and jumpy but has no idea why.

Canada is distraught and angry that Ozpin's faction forced America to keep Vale a secret from him. He feels he should have noticed something was wrong and that so much pressure was being put on America. He puts his anger aside for the sake of finding America, though he remains wary when Qrow (a member of Ozpin's faction) joins the mission. He freaks out and has a minor panic attack upon realizing he has been accidentally using his Semblance on people for a while now. Semblances are an extension of one's soul, and he fears what that says about him.

He's horrified when he remembers it again because he fears he might be subconsciously making himself forget things. He also realizes the extent of what he can do: he could erase someone’s memory completely and utterly destroy their identity in the process. America's reassurances that he is a good person and would never do such a thing do not convince him otherwise.

He completely shuts down when he realizes he's dying with Mantle. He won't eat, stays in his room for days, and refuses to talk to anyone. He does not tell his family he is dying because he believes there is no way to save him. He waits around for death to claim him until his best friend comes and drags him out of bed, saying he does not have to deal with this alone. After the severance happens, Canada feels guilty about the deaths of Mantle's people (that occurred because of the severance) but acknowledges that if the ritual was not done, all Canadians would have likely died with him and Mantle.

Canada rakes Ozpin over the coals for forcing America to keep Vale a secret (and all the other shady actions Ozpin insisted on keeping to himself), revealing he has not forgotten or forgiven what Ozpin's faction did (though he has forgiven Qrow, who apologized). Again, he is willing to put his anger aside to complete their mission.

He is more concerned about England than himself after Atlas and Emerald tortured him. He cries in relief after he realizes Atlas (the person who is the reason for almost everything bad that has happened to him and America) is dead.

Canada goes blank-eyed and still when he is told about America's impending death. He does not notice he's crying at first but ends up sobbing when America reminds him they are supposed to go to Canada's house when they go home. Canada becomes very protective of America to the point where he will stand up to and threaten Russia to keep him safe. He feels guilty after he punches America and can't stop himself from looking in horror at the bruises he left on his brother. He knows Salem can enhance and create negative emotions but questions if some of those emotions came from him.

The Grimm essence makes Canada increasingly aggressive. He snarls that they should destroy Ozpin after he betrays the group and is instantly horrified by what he said. (In this case "destroy" means utterly destroy every trace of Ozpin's soul since Ozpin would reincarnate otherwise.) It only grows worse after Salem captures and tortures him.

Canada feels the violent urges growing more pronounced but is unable to do anything to prevent it. He grins while telling Emerald he should have hung Cinder's headless corpse from Beacon tower, while inside he is horrified by what he is saying. His thoughts jerk back and forth between pleas for the pain to stop and violent desires to see his tormentors strung up by their entrails. He is perfectly aware his mind is breaking and the Grimm essence is corrupting him, but nothing he does can stop it.

Is he a jerk? Any jerk moves?

His only "jerk" move is more of an "insensitive" move. Early on, he does not remember the lab and how it changed America/revealed the selfless side America tried to hide. This makes Canada act unintentionally dismissive towards his brother and see him as a Heroic Wannabe instead of someone trapped in a horrible situation who was trying to subtly beg for help without alerting Ozpin or Salem's forces. Canada later beats himself up over his dismissive attitude when he finds out the whole situation.

Verdict?

Iron Woobie.
