After several years of internet rumors Capcom confirmed last Thursday that Fox will produce a live-action movie based off the Mega Man franchise.

On one hand, it has some good production talent like the Catfish directors and Peter Chernin, who has produced some decent works for Fox like the rebooted Planet of the Apes movies and the TV series New Girl.

On the other hand, one of the producers is Heroes star Masi Oka. Guess what he produced?

On one hand, I'd love to see a live action Mega Man film, and I think one could work well in theory. On the other hand, if this movie is good, it'd be the first good movie of its type.

The good news is that this will take a few years for production and the Disney buyout is scheduled for 2019.

I have very little confidence in Fox's ability to do an adaptation justice, but Disney-owned Fox might well be another story.

I have no confidence in Capcom's cinematic endeavours considering the track record of the Resident Evil films. In fact as a Monster Hunter fan, I am on the brink of crying, whenever I think of the mess that probably will come out of that film project.

I am a simple man, I like stories therefore I dissect and discuss them.

[up][up] I did like the Prince of Persia movie, whitewashing aside. And while it wasn't a film, Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist, a web series, was great. I think from 2010 onwards we're starting to see that video game movies don't have to suck.

So I presume this will somehow end up with Paul Verhoven directing and Milla Jovovich as an OC that’s the main character.

While I would have preferred an animated feature, Mega Man can still transition to live action better than Sonic due to the presence of more humanoids.

Don't really have an opinion on this yet—it can go either way.

As I stated before, just adapt The Protomen's rock opera.

Hey, remember how this was going to be a thing?

It isn't anymore.

Honestly, I'm not very torn up about this. Most adaptations from Fox turn out very well. (*glances at Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li*)

I doubt Mega Man would really work all that well in a feature film format anyway.

Not every video game needs to be a film.

Not every video game needs to be a film.

Most games don't. They're just structured too differently.

Shadow of the Colossus is probably the worst example, but I doubt that movie will ever make it out of Development Hell.

I wouldn't be shocked if another studio picks it up. Capcom seemed very dedicated to getting this film off the ground.

Eddie Lebron's fan film will always be THE adaptation of the game. Why can't Capcom just approach him and Blue Core Studios?

Aww. I think the plot of Mega Man has some solid room for an engaging and insightful film series about the nature of robotics.

...

Let me rephrase.

I think The Megas have created an interesting and nuanced take on the Mega Man mythos without completely overwriting it with grimdark the way The Protomen did, which would make for a very interesting and compelling set of films.

I've tinkered with the idea, m'self.

Producer Peter Chernin has left 20th Century Fox, taking most of the projects he had there that aren't based on 20th IP with him. I presume this means the Mega Man movie will be shopped elsewhere.

Matt Tomlin, writer of the upcoming The Batman, is penning the script.

[up][up]Nope. From the article:

Tomlin is writing Mega Man, which is being developed by Chernin Entertainment.

I'm still shocked they're having so much trouble with the SAO movie. It's not a particularly difficult concept to make live-action, and they could even save some money on effects by handwaving obvious CGI as "well, they're inside a game, so of course the CGI isn't perfect." My biggest worry is like with Death Note (2017), that they'll make everyone American and miss a lot of the points of the original.

Anyway, I could see Mega-Man being good live-action, but it's definitely not a guaranteed hit. There's a lot of ways it could go wrong. Hasn't most of the recent Mega-Man stuff been Netwarrior anyway?

Last I checked, SAO was being turned into a series, not a movie. I haven't heard of any production issues, it just hasn't come out yet.

Also they confirmed Kirito and Asuna won't be whitewashed for what it's worth.
