Shores of Tortoran

John hated sand. It was coarse, rough, irritating, and it got everywhere. As it happened, he also hated being thrown around in what had seemed like a hurricane, but he hadn't had much choice there.

He opened his eyes as something pinched his arm, coughing and hacking and gasping for breath like a fish out of water- quite the literal metaphor, as it happened.

The human flailed and desperately pushed himself to his feet, throwing the curious (and possibly hungry) crab that had woken him out of sight.

Once his lungs were mostly empty of water, he rubbed the water from his eyes, still breathing heavily. "What the- how the-" He began, but his ever so eloquent speech was interrupted by the sight of the turtle-man, and the realization that John was on a beach and there was also a guy with scissors for some reason.

Scrambling backwards, he stared at it in terror and awe, jaw dropping. "What- what are you?" He breathed. "Where... where the hell are we?!" The last thing he remembered was... being hit by a car. Oh fuck, he'd been- how was he alive?

Eastern Kingdom Town

"Well, if they didn't know you were a Guardian already a Switch seals the deal." Maryland said and rolled her eyes. "How do you even keep that thing charged? Wait no, magic, no doubt." She took a step back from the table and jerked her head at Aileeana. "I'd guess magic is why her shadow does that too. Speaking of magic. That woman Morganna told us to go here but I'm looking for, I guess, another wizard named Medan. Is he here or should I keep going? I'm magic like him but differently. I can build stuff and transmute stuff, I dunno." She shrugged. "Right now I'm still thinking it's fucked up we even have these powers though. You happen to catch if this town has a name before you showed these peasants your magnificent technology or whatever?"

Shuria's Castle

Now with a more clear head, the vampire considered the situation he was in fully for the first time. While Julian seemed certain this place was mere fantasy and wanted to escape as soon as possible, Dimitri’s was full of doubts. If this were a dream, something he was hardly sure of, well… so what? That didn’t mean there was necessarily any chance of escape.

One harsh reality Dimitri understood as a mentally ill person was that you don’t get to just say some inspiring words, go to some therapy sessions and then suddenly break break free from the bonds your mind places upon you. And that’s talking about ordinary, mundane psychoses. This was something far, far beyond that. If Julian thought he could break free from it all by punching things and shouting at fake people, he was probably just as crazy as Dimitri was.

So what was he going to do about all this? He didn’t know, to be honest. At any rate, he should probably stop staying inside his own head and actually say something.

“I’m not totally sure about this whole Guardian thing, really, but I’ll hold off on my skepticism for the moment. What’s the worst case scenario if we all just decide not to go along with this? I just want to know what the stakes are.”

Sepulchrum Swamp Socializing with Strangers - Nadia

When Reyna looked at her in confusion Nadia shrugged. "Hey, I'm as confused as you; I'm just reading off what this book is telling me."

As Reyna revealed more about herself, such as her track and gymnast experience, the details in the book began to fill in more and more, adding a picture of Reyna proper rather than the blur that was there before and more information about her capabilities.

A light blush fell on Nadia's face when Kirsti scritched her ear, and Nadia brushed aside her hair as she scrutinized her tome more. Ignoring the talk about possibly being dead (she really didn't want to consider that possibility), she nodded at Kirsti's directions. "Well, any direction is better than staying here I guess; maybe we can read up more about ourselves and why we're here - and where here is - as we walk?"

And so as they headed in completely the wrong direction to the castle, Nadia flipped through the pages of the book, asking it everything she could think of at that moment:

  1. Are we dead? Are we dreaming? Are we alive? Are we awake?
  2. Why are we here?
  3. Where are we and what is this place?
  4. Why do we have weird abilities all of a sudden?
  5. What abilities do we all actually have?
  6. The heck are these stats?
  7. Can we get back home?
  8. Where are Dmitri and grump-pa?
  9. What is Zakuun's Castle like?
  10. Who or what is Zakuun?
  11. Why did we end up here in this swamp, specifically, of all places?

Drifters into Marrow's Graw - Nadia and Company

Hoo boy, village of undead or ghouls or cannibals or something. What a place to take a wrong turn to. The exchange between Nagato and Canna didn't help set Nadia at ease, and her eyes quickly darted over to Kirsti to see how she was reacting to all this as well. Nagato, isn't that a Japanese name? Even more questions popped into Nadia's head.

  1. Who are these people here?
  2. What do they eat (hopefully aside from human flesh)?
  3. How come everyone speaks English in this undead fantasy village?

"We're, uh, lost," was all Nadia was willing to say, eyes glancing over to each corner to make sure the citizens here weren't eyeballing potential meat.

Shannon grumbled slightly as she went to the mines, but otherwise stayed quiet.

As they arrived at the entrance, Shannon clicked on her vintage lighter.

"Wow. It's quite dark in there," she noted, peering into the darkness.

Wooded Kingdom, Something-shire Probably

Tibalt happily took the console and started gaming, he needed something to get his mind off things and while back home there was a Switch, it belonged to a sibling and he was a little too lazy to try and get some time on it.

"We're supposed to be solving problems to make a far-off world flower stronger so the world doesn't like, outright end. That being said, wouldn't mind getting more info from Med'an on this, he seems like he's fine with the Guardian stuff..."

He glanced at the table again while a course loaded up.

"I've got an Izzet deck with me if that's any point of friendship."

It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.

Eastern Kingdoms, Applegem Town

"There is a sign over the inn that says what the town is called," murmured Amber to Maryland as she pointed towards the inn's sign, which had the words Applegem Town Inn etched into it. "No one's corrected me so far, so I can only assume the town is called Applegem."

"As for someone named 'Medan'... I have no idea, it's the first I'm hearing of such a name," admitted Amber as she sighed a bit. "As for what that is," she pointed towards her Switch, "It's a Nintendo Switch, you know, a handheld gaming console. You can have a turn after gloomy here has a turn."

Amber then turned towards Aileana, watching her contort her body a bit. She wasn't scared, more as she was intrigued and awed. "You're like a contortionist! C-Cool..." murmured Amber as she watched Aileana in awe, before composing herself. "I-I mean, that's a nifty power you have."

Hearing that Tibalt had a Magic deck, Amber smiled softly to herself. "I-I wouldn't mind playing a game of Magic with you later, if you're up for it."

Nadia's Book

As Nadia asked question after question, the book made a list with answers as the pages fluttered to life. The answers themselves seemed to write themselves without any pencil or pen.

1. You are awake and alive. This is no dream.

2. To Serve the World Lotus and to restore balance to the world.

3. You are located in the world of Lotus, and are currently within the undead lands of Sepulchrum.

4. Your powers are given to you by the Lotus, and are manifestations of your inner beings.

5. Such information is unknown at this time.

6. A manifestation of your current strength and power. The stats are rough estimations of what you can do, and your potential.

7. Yes, but in order to return to your own world, you must head towards the World Lotus.

8. They are currently located at Shuria's Castle.

9. There is no place known as Zakuun's castle anymore due to the Guardians Dimitri and Julian having defeated Zakuun and having taken his castle.

10. A demon lord of respectable strength who once ruled over half of Sepulchrum. He has been sent back to the demon lands due to his encounter with the Guardians Dimitri and Julian.

11. Such information is unknown at this time.

As the group arrived at Marrow's Graw, and more questions had been made, the book came to life again and started to scribble down some answers.

1. The people here are undead survivors, and followers of Shuria. They are rather peaceful, but are currently starving and decaying due to a lack of food.

2. The people of this village eat meat, specifically human meat. However, they can eat any type of meat as well to restore their strength and fix their decaying bodies.

3. They do not speak this 'English'. Thanks to the Lotus and being Guardians you are able to understand their foreign languages in a tongue that is understandable to you. In your case, 'English'.

Shuria's Castle

"Well, if you're so insistent on leaving, you'd best look for Medan first. He's a Guardian like you, and he knows more about this than anyone," spoke Shuria as she answered Julian's question to the best of her abilities. "You'd probably find him in the Elderless Woods this time of the year, negotiating with the Orcs."

Shuria turned towards Dimitri, her head tilted just a bit. "Surely you're joking, right? You were summoned and yet you don't want to fulfill your destiny?" She paused a bit, before bringing a finger to her chin in thought. "I suppose if a few of you refused to do your tasks, then nothing would happen... but if all of you did nothing? Well, I can only assume the World Lotus would wilt and we would all die."

"Now, if you're looking for transportation, I could assist you in getting out of Sepulchrum. If you're willing to assist me in a simple task first," said Shuria as she smiled at the two Guardians.

Shores of Tortoran

The Turtle-man immediately began to thump Simon on the head like a bongo drum, clearly upset at being called imaginary.

"No respect for elders it seems!" spoke the turtle as it let out a sigh. Turning his attention to John, the turtle let out another sigh. "You're in the lands of Tortoran, young one, and I am a Turtolo. You may call me Shulk though."

"Now then, what are you all doing so close to my village? Did your ship break or something while in a storm?"

Erix'aad

As Shannon decided to leave the group and head towards the mines herself, the others were left with the choice of gathering supplies and rest, or chase after the ten year old and assist her.

When Shannon arrived at the mines and flicked her lighter on, she would see that there were injured goblins and gnolls abound.

"Ugh..." murmured one of the goblins as they lifted themselves up. "...A-Are you here to clear out the elementals?" he groaned as he dragged himself towards Shannon. "You'll find them in the back. The Chief is probably holding off their elemental boss as we speak... please help him."

Without another word, the goblin collapsed into the sand, succumbing to its wounds.

Technazan Entrance

Skyler suddenly noticed that there were only three fellow Guardians nearby him. A certain girl was missing and when he had a look outside the entrance...

"Oh God dammit, Shannon." The dragon took off from the ground and said "Sorry, change of plans! Can't let somebody face those monsters alone, especially a child!" He quickly flew after the girl.

Erix'aad Mines

The dragon landed at the entrance of the mines soon after Shannon had entered and quickly went after her. Dragon night vision meant the cave didn't hider his sight too much. When he caught up, he heard the goblin's conversation, thought was not close enough for them to be seen. He had no medical experience and nothing within him said he could heal these possibly dying people. There was only one option for him. "Well, he said to help the chief so that's what I'm doing!"

Skyler went into a rush again, planning on rescuing the soul stuck with the elementals.

The Shores of Tortoran

"I, um... no," John told the.. turtle? Man? Turtle-man? "I... I wasn't on a ship, I was walking across the street and... I think I got hit by a car."

Saying that aloud made him realize how stupid it sounded, but he had been hit by a car, and now he was on a beach and there was a turtle-man named Shulk, and he was hitting the other guy.

It took a moment for that to sink in. There was a turtle-guy and he was hitting another guy and apparently he was in... Tortoran, apparently. It sounded like Turtle Land, which almost made him laugh- at the pun or the absurdity of the situation.

"... hey, man," he called to the other guy. "Who.. who are you? How did you get here?" He glanced nervously at Shulk, half-expecting him to start throwing some weird magic around, half expecting him to try to kill them. "I'm.. I'm John."

Erix'aad Mines

"Oh..." Shannon whispered quietly. She looked around. So many wounded...

She wanted to help. She wanted to help badly.

Her presence seemed to stem the flow of blood somewhat as her desires manifested into magic, and seeped outward. Flesh knitted back together slowly, agonizingly, but it would be enough to stabilize most of the dying ones.

"I-if you can walk, help the other wounded. Carry the bodies back to t-town," she whispered, then repeated it again, louder.

"I'm going in," Shannon's jaw was set as she followed after Skyler.

And she did go in, with nothing but a lighter as a light source.

Shores of Tortoran

"What the hell?!" Simon angrily responded to the sudden introduction of thumping to his skull. It didn't hurt as much as he would have expected, but it was the principle of the thing! And this weird turtle thing, real as it might have proven itself, had no right to demand respect just for being older than him! Just existing for longer than someone wasn't something that won any points from him.

To vent a tiny bit he began opening and closing the scissors quicker than before. His brother's wouldn't get angry now, they'd deal with it... oh how he hated that. And then, as if to rub it in, the turtle started explaining things to the other one who had woken up. Clearly Simon just didn't matter anymore!

Even in the midst of a slowly building internal anger, though, the teen paid attention to the exposition. That was all very interesting. He stopped fiddling around with the pair of scissors and began to focus. Alright, so if this wasn't some bizarre dream, which was looking increasingly likely, that made this another world. It was odd, but the idea didn't worry him much. Wasn't like he was any use back home either, after all.

At least the other man here, who clearly was in the same metaphorical boat as Simon, decided to talk with him. "I'm Simon Ca... Just Simon," the teen responded. "And I have no clue... I was studying, and I think I went to get some water..." He paused, trying to remember what had happened. Suddenly the realization struck him. Looking rather angry at himself, he continued "And then I rushed on the wooden stairs in socks and tripped headfirst! Oh my... I'm so pathetic!" Now he also sounded angry at himself. John had a much better story than him! Being hit by a car could've been anyone's fault, but this was simple clumsiness.

Shuria’s Castle

Dimitri was shocked by the idea that this ragtag group of people was responsible for the fate of an entire world. Back on Earth, he would’ve found the idea thrilling. But actually being faced with that proposition… well, here, he wasn’t sure he was really capable of handling that kind of responsibility. And yet, he would have to. Julian already made it clear he wasn’t going to be a part of this, and he had no idea how many others would follow in his footsteps. But Dimitri would never be able to live with himself if people died because of his inaction.

Road to Marrow's Graw

As the group went on their merry way, Kirsti began sneaking some glances at the book Nadia had been carrying. She doesn't exactly get a good read and she doesn't want to bother Nadia about it now because she feels it's rather rude but it gave Kirsti some relief that Nadia has some powers to rely on too.

Then they stumbled into Marrow's Graw, where Kirsti's attention was more directed at the creeps than the book. When the boy came up to her and asked the question, she jumped a bit, causing her ever-present wind to slightly blow harder. When she heard his question she opened her mouth to instinctively tell him that they are, in fact, human along with some sarcastic humor, but she stopped herself from speaking when even that question held up in some legitimacy in this world. Is Kirsti even human?

It was when the kid opened his empty eye socket that Kirsti fully freaked out enough that her wind is strong enough to pick up twigs and some dust. She realized what she did and said "I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to be offensive, I'm just scared of an empty eye socket and I...uhhh...Oh geez."

She frantically looked around, seeing the mad crowd of people who would rather eat them than talk to them and the strange lady asking why such outsiders came to a town like this. Kirsti had to admit, her feelings of spooks were also mixed with pity and while she does want to get out of here as fast as possible, she also feels as if she needs to stay around a little bit and at least improve the town.

When Kirsti's glance fell on Nadia again, she remembered something else and now's probably a good time to test the limits of her other power. She kneeled down to the kid and tried to touch his eye socket and see if she could heal back his eyeball, despite it being rather gross to her. While she was doing that she answered hastily "I'm...here to help."

"The Nintendo Switch?" At this point, Terry realized that 10 years of not playing video games has caused him to fall pretty far behind the new trends.

"What happened to the other one? The one with the... you know, the um..." Terry started swinging his right arm pretending to hold something as he tried to remember what that other Nintendo console was called.

It's white and I know it starts with a "W." But what is it?

"I swear to god that all brats seem to have a death wish." Mark hissed in frustration. Despite the harsh words, he didn't waste any time chasing after Shannon and Skyler. "My bleeding heart's going to be the end of my one day..." He grumbled under his breath. Reality bending summoning powers or not, Letting a 10 year-old face off against Earth Elementals didn't sit well with him right now.

Once the group arrived at the Mines, Mark provided everyone with a little more light using the flashlight on his phone. "Hey uh...kid." The slime man addressed Shannon. "You got any ideas on how to beat the Earth Elementals? Something in that head of yours that you can summon to face them? Because I'd honestly feel a lot better about you charging in without hesitation if you had something like that. Oh, and one other thing...what do I call you all? Mines

There goes the dragon going off after the child again. Lynn grumbled a little as she put the hospital garb over the undersized clothing to protect her decency a little better, and followed the remaining three on foot.

The darkness of the mines held a bit of a surprise for her; as she entered some sort of low-light camera mode in her ocular implant turned on, making everything visible in varying shades of green. To answer Mark's question she merely replied, "Lynn is sufficient. No need to overcomplicate a name." As if to chip in on Shannon's thoughts on how to handle the elementals Lynn added, "Could those elementals shake off those wyrms of yours, or would they get distracted by the all the earth around us?"

Shannon thought a bit, and shook her head.

"Wyrms can burrow into them, and even if you yank on them it'll just make their jaws rip more chunks out. You can't shake something off that's inside you. Also, they listen to what I say and eat what I tell them to eat, I think, so they won't get distracted."

Marrow's Graw - Nadia

Hmm. Inquiring with the book gave Nadia more questions than answers, it felt like, but it was certainly a start. She glanced over again to Kirsti and breathed a sigh of relief that she didn't seem too panicked (but rather, having the right amount of panic due for this situation where she still kept her head), even offering to help the strange boy with the missing eye.

"I mean, I'm not sure what I can do, but if there's anything I can help with too, I'm totally willing to give it a try," Nadia suggested to the elderly Canna.

Hmm, let me try something, Nadia thought to herself. Book, can you hear my questions? Can you answer them if I ask them only in thought?

You say they're followers of Shuria; who is Shuria and can we trust her? What are they survivors of?

Beat.

Also, are you alive? Sentient? Thoughtful? Just thought I'd ask.

Yuval glared at the Kingpin before leaving on his own, avoiding the possibilty of Gum-Gum's servants escorting him.

"Don't touch me, got it?"

As they returned to town he was reprimanded by the cyborg, he tapped his feet and answered quietly.

"I don't like businessmen, definitely not ones who accept child labor I doubt he'll helps us too, promises are nice, but rarely fullfilled"

Suddenly the kid went off on her own, causing Rosenberg to chase after her into the mine, what the hell is even going on here? Summoning wyrms? Water elementals? What the fuck is this dream? He stared at the ground as he tapped his feet quickly, speaking almost offhandedly to Mark. "My name's Yuval"

Yuval stood up, staring vacantly into the cave.

"Listen, if you can do all your magics from over here, fine, inside is a different story. We don't even know whether there's proper breathing conditions for an elementary school kid there. If it's dangerous you don't actually know how to fight on your own, or navigate, or get out if by some accident you cause a cave in, with your creatures, I can't in good conscience send a child into something like this. Even if you were some kind of god. If we have to do it, fine, I'll do it but I'd rather you stay somewhere safe"

Rosenberg stood at the entrance to the mines in front of the rest of the group.

"I used to be a soldier so I have a good chance, but if I have to protect a kid it'll turn difficult"

Nadia's Book

The book began to etch writing upon itself as Nadia thought carefully.

Yes, I can read your thoughts and answer your questions like so.

Shuria is a succubus that has allied herself with the undead and their blight because of her lover being a human who fell to the curse of an Old God's wrath. Shuria is a kind, if not sly succubus, and has abstained on preying on humans for sustenance. From my records, she can be trusted. As for the undead and why they are survivors, they are dying out due to a lack of sustenance. Despite numbering in the thousands, they are running out of food and have resorted to cannibalism among themselves.

The book paused it's writing as if contemplating something upon being asked if it was sentient.

I am but a book, your book. Whether or not I'm sentient should not matter.

Nagato simply blinked a bit as his missing eye restored itself to Kirsti's touch, shocking both him and Canna, causing the later to whistle in surprise.

"A Guardian, are you?" murmured Canna as she watched the healing process.

"What's a Guardian, Canna?" asked Nagato as he blinked with his new eye. "I can see normally now! Are Guardians helpful people?"

"They're beings who are meant to bring about great change to the land of Lotus," says Canna as she turned towards the three Guardians. "Whether for good or bad, that is what they are meant to be; changers of the land. It's been a while since I've seen one up close, ever since Medan retired that is."

"If you really want to help us further, I suggest you help get the factory up and running. It's a factory that was made by an old Guardian, and it'll allow us to reclaim what is rightfully ours," said Canna as she pointed off towards a large warehouse-like building at the edge of the town. "It'll also allow us to help Shuria when the time comes... if she hasn't been forced to marry that bastard Zakuun already..."

Apple Gem Town

"I'm not sure where we go from here... Though, if we really need to find some information, I suggest we go find this Medan person that Maryland mentioned... or head towards the nearby castle off over there," spoke Amber as she pointed off towards the distance, and off towards a rather majestic castle. "The locals say that the city of Stormguard is the main hub, and that the King is wise beyond his years. If anyone can help us, it'll probably be him."

"Before you all go, relax and have some of our famous Apple Gem Cider!" spoke the innkeeper as he hollered from the nearby window. A luxurious looking waitress immediately took the tray of Ciders and placed it on the table before the group.

Amber hesitantly took a mug, taking a sip before widening her eyes. "It's... sweet..." she murmured as she decided to continue drinking.

"Drink up! It's smooth and it's tasty! It's the least we can do now that we have new Guardians to assist us," spoke the innkeeper again as he waved towards the group.

Free Drinks never hurt anyone... besides, it might be helpful to have some fire in you all before continuing your adventure.

Tortoran

Shulk just looked over them as he tilted his head in confusion. "What strange humans... Look, if you're stowaways, that's fine, but don't go making up gibberish, you hear? We don't get many humans here, so I suppose I'll treat you kindly for now, just so long as you're not associates with the Naga... filthy savages they are."

Shulk started to walk towards the nearby village, his staff being used as a walking cane.

"Come along now, it is best we get you a change of clothes and to the inn," spoke the Tortolo as he signaled for them to follow.

Erix'aad Mine entrance

As the group decided on what to do, a creature made entirely of stone and dirt emerged from the cave with yellow beads for eyes. The creature's eyes turned red as it growled at the group, before throwing itself at them. Behind it, emerged three other Earth Elementals, all ready to fight and join their brethren in combat.

"You... don't belong here..." spoke the Elementals in unison as they started to swing their large arms.

As Skyler rushed in to help the boss among the miners, he would soon come to a large clearing in the mines and encounter a rather large looking goblin the size of himself fending off another Earth Elemental, this one much larger than the previous Earth Elementals.

"Dragon!" roared the hobgoblin as he swung with his pickaxe, "Assist me in taking down this elemental!"

"You come into our homes and mine our children for profit... Dragon!" the Earth Elemental turned towards Skyler who had just arrived. "You are a Guardian, I can tell by your aura... Assist me in retaking our home! Please... I beg of you!"

It would seem a dilemma had emerged before Skyler. With everyone else busy at the entrance with the rampaging elementals, it would seem the decision lied to Skyler alone.

Shuria's Castle

"Simply put," Shuria stood tall and readied herself to give instructions, "I need you both to destroy the gate to the North-East that is barring my people from gathering resources and supplies. If you do this for me, I will take you to Medan, who will answer all of your questions, I'm sure."

"Will you two carry out this task for me?" Shuria got to her knees and placed her forehead against the ground, begging. "Please... for my people to have a chance of survival we need you two to destroy that gate."

"Believe in the me that believes in you!"

Eastern Kingdoms, Applegem Town

With the drinks arriving Tibalt put down the console and took a drink.

"Hub city, always a good way to find some questing opportunities. Also a good omen that we're starting here within spitting distance of a big human capital of these lands..."

He tried to crack a smile and have some of his drink.

"We can play later, but maybe once we have some spare time during travel?"

It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.
