Will Ferrell is Sherlock Holmes

John C. Reilly is Dr. John Watson

They solve crimes.

I would like to take this opportunity to recommend Miss Sherlock, which kicks ass.

[up] Never knew about that until now.

Does it appear in any English versions of HBO?

[up]You can see it on the HBO Go app if you have a subscription.

Anyway, regarding the actual topic, there have been comic takes on Holmes and Watson before but this is some real talent, looks promising.

The bee scene was hilarious, mocking the Sherlock Scan trope seen in Downey's and Cumberbatch's versions.

I can never unhear what Ferrell said: "Angle of approach compensates for warp in floor. Termination of mosquito." [lol]

As someone who hates Will Ferrell with a passion I can't wait for this to get thrashed critically.

Because I saw in a trailer that they just had to throw in the "No shit Sherlock" line.

So. Apparently this movie stinks. A lot. Like it's at 6% as of this typing.

[up] While I thought it was greatly executed in the trailer, I'll admit it was harrowing hearing it come from the girl who just recently starred in one of my favorite Netflix cartoons.

Speaking of Netflix, H&W was testing so badly, Sony tried to lump it onto Netflix to no avail.

And audiences are just up and walking out of the theater.

Can you say "that escalated quickly?"

One of the Coens wrote this thing? Surprising.

[up] Actually, it's from Etan Cohen, whose references include Tropic Thunder and Men in Black 3.

So there’s Joel and Ethan Coen, and their evil twins Joel and Etan Cohen.

[up][up][up] Huh, I thought those films were pretty good to be honest, well, they cant all be great. I may still check this out if it shows up on cable or streaming.

I bet aside from it being a Will Ferrel movie people are avoiding it because it's taking one of the most distinguished fictional detectives and turning him into a dumbass.

[up] There have been comedic takes on Holmes before, heck Mad did one back in the 50s (and there were probably parodies of Holmes long before that as well).

There have been comedic takes on Holmes before

I give you The Mystery of the Leaping Fish, 1916.

Mark Twain wrote a Sherlock Holmes parody as well.

This is one of the most scathing review of a movie I've ever seen

RE: Comedic Holmes Film: Probably the most seminal is 1973's "Without a Clue" starring Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley. It's actually legitimately funny.

Here is the Mark Twain Sherlock Holmes parody.

I once saw a weird Holmes play where the Big Bad was Watson, who over the years had become outright murderous toward Holmes because he got all the credit for their adventures.

I didn't like it.

A friend of mine directed a short film where Watson was the culprit, but not out of malice; he simply immediately found the ring the family had reported as missing, and he and Holmes used that as a means to investigate the relatives' growing hostility towards each other.

So apparently the British and American cuts of the movie have different openings. And the British version makes less sense because the later parts of the film reference the american film's opening but lacks the scenes in question.

Dan Olson, Film Brain and Petros Ioannou (Who was an extra on this) discuss watching the movie, and the different cuts.

That was the premise of Sherlock Gnomes except Watson wasn't murderous but just got sick of Holmes' attitude and taught him a lesson. They then ruined the ending by introducing Moriarty.

Holmes and Watson sweeps the Razzie nominations, including Worst Picture.

Already I can picture H&W winning Worst Picture by a landslide. That makes two in a row for Sony!

Are people saying this movie is bad because it's actually bad or because they're Sherlock Homes fans?

Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.

[up] I believe it was bad and unfunny by general audience level. It bombed at the box office and CinemaScore gives it a D+ which, if you consider the fact that audiences are much more lenient than critics in regards to movies, is pretty much an F-.
