Go To

Hey tropers, we are working hard on making consistent progress with the wiki and being better about updating everyone with what we are doing. Updates are listed under each staff member that worked on them. Expect to see more frequent updates on this thread moving forward. Please comment below if something was not fixed properly.

Note: Use Query Wishlist and Query Bugs for requesting new features and reporting new bugs, thank you!

     Releases from: 2020
  • We recently discovered that a non-US IP address was hitting us with thousands of SQL injection attempts, none of which succeeded. They did, however, put additional load on the database. This wasn't intended as a DDoS attack per se but rather an attempt to take control of the site.

  • The administrators activated additional security measures on our Cloudflare firewall that have had the unintended side-effect of causing frequent ReCAPTCHA prompts for users. We are aware of this problem and working on a resolution.

     Releases from: 2019
Apr 10th:
  • Improvements to new user registrations and the user experience when suspended or banned. See this post for details.

Mar 21th:

  • The adblocker bug (popup message) will now appear for logged-in users after a certain threshold of page views has occurred while blocking ads.
    • You may snooze the bug for up to 7 days at a time if you have contributed to the wiki (by editing articles) recently.
  • There is now a subscription option to use TV Tropes ad-free for certain periods (monthly, yearly).
    • You can use this link to access the subscription system.
    • Subscriptions use a third-party payment facilitator called Stripe. TV Tropes does not collect or store any of your payment information. You will be rebilled at the indicated interval unless you cancel.
    • Subscriptions are linked to your account. If you change accounts, or are banned, you will lose your subscription.
    • Additional subscription options are being considered or are in development.
    • The badge advertised as a reward for subscribing appears not to be working currently.
    • To unsubscribe, send a message to "The Staff" via our contact form. Additional cancellation options are forthcoming.
  • Users who received one year of ad-free usage as a perk for contributing to the Kickstarter campaign at the 25 USD tier or higher will no longer have that perk. (The 95+ USD lifetime perk is not affected.)

  • The edit lock icon now appears and performs correctly on all views of an article, not just the primary one.
  • namespace_index.php pagination now works as expected.

2. Got rid of bloated 3rd party adblock message and created our own to alert non-members when their adblock is on. To test, visit any two pages, while not logged in with your adblocker on.
== END: RICHARD ==

== CHRIS ==
1. Enable caching system for server - If you are NOT logged-in you'll receive a cached page from the server which can be as old as 3 minutes old. Unless you submit a form then it will bypass the caching system. This should greatly reduce the server load so it doesn't have to dynamically build the page for every pageview millions of times per day. The future versions should cache trope/forum pages for everyone and then rebuild it only when something changes.
2. Remove unused pixels (ie: comscore, retargeting, etc.)
== END: CHRIS ==

7. Fixed errors in the error log and slow query log.
8. removal of all anti-vandalism page-locking code.
== END TOM ==

A lot of sites do this, so you're going a BIT overboard. They DO have to pay for the site somehow.

That said...Do you know if it locks you out after having adblock on for a certain number of pages? That's something a lot of sites also do and not something I'm willing to put up with.

Also can you buy the Year subscription for someone else? Have someone in my group who has no disposable income and if this becomes a Thing™ I'd like to be able to help.

All I want is to not have a nagging pop-up on every page.

Everyone uses Adblock, be it for a browsing experience that's easier on the eyes, a less resource intensive one, or to protect themselves from viruses.

I get it, you want bills paid, but there are better ways to pay them than this.

And people will just block the pop-up anyway if they can, so all you're managing to accomplish here is annoy people for a few seconds.

I hope that the "number of pages without ads" thing doesn't lock you out of the site eventually. I have trouble using the site on mobile because it keeps redirecting me within about 10 minutes, no matter what. I might get the yearly subscription once I start getting a more disposable income though.

I posted this initially on the Advertising and Computer Security Issues on TV Tropes thread, because that's where I first saw this and saw people getting worked up over it. But having seen this thread this is probably the more appropriate place:

For the record, I'm actually okay with the ad-free pass. I'm on the site and active on it enough that it's a justifiable expense.

That said:

This will not change the experience of any registered user who has already received an ad-free pass, such as for their Kickstarter contribution.
I was a contributor to the 2.0 Update Kickstarter and my ad-block from that was working until just today. If that particular block has expired, then that's fine (I honestly thought it was supposed to long ago) but if it hasn't, then going by that quoted post I should still be sitting pretty and should let you guys know that I am currently sitting ugly.

Tv Tropes is the first site I've seen that puts the pop-up on EVERY DAMNED PAGE YOU VISIT.

I don't even have an adblocker, and I'm still a bit miffed about this whole thing, because it's another big change nobody has thought to warn people about beforehand. We get that the site needs money (hell, I'll even by the pass if I can figure out how to get it with no pre-existing adblocker), I think the outcry is here because the ads on the site are, let's face it, pretty irritating at best, and with no warning, I can see why people feel so strongly about this issue.

I just...I wish ya'll would let us know about upcoming changes beforehand so we can be prepared for it.

While it may have been inevitable, as per the need to keep the site up, we could and should have done more preparation before rolling this out. As Fighteer noted, we're discussing with the devs how to make this better.

Apologies, all around. This was very disruptive.

I'd be perfectly willing to turn off adblock if it were the text-based google ones (that I see when I search on mobile) and not the ghastly distracting image ads riddled with security issues. Or if they were on the sidebar like they were back in the 2000s.

Honestly, though I don't find the pop-up at the bottom that intrusive, mostly because it seems a lot smaller than it did before.

^ Me too. Text-based ads like Reddit has are fine. Those can't redirect you to phishing sites or run malicious code. I gave it a chance a while back, kept getting redirected to fake pages, then reinstalled my adblocker. Naggy popups aren't going to make me risk my computer's security, sorry.

Same.

I did click on the subscribe button anyway to see if it showed more information, but it didn't actually do anything. The page stayed the same.

Not blocking ads slows things way down when a bunch of tabs are open. For a site that works best with tabbed browsing, this is unacceptable.

I'm really glad you mentioned Reddit's ads, because they are noticeable yet generally unobtrusive to browsing the site as a whole. Especially the small block-sized ones on old reddit (which I primarily use) — stick one on the top and the bottom of the sidebar and we're good.

Everyone uses Adblock, be it for a browsing experience that's easier on the eyes, a less resource intensive one, or to protect themselves from viruses.
That's hyperbole. As the Advertising concerns thread can attest, I use this site from a variety of devices and have adblocker installed on none of them. Most of the auto-play ads have been removed/disabled, so only the auto-redirect ads (which only attack on mobile browsers) are still a problem for me. It's very rude to demand that you are allowed to have an ad-free experience when you don't fund the website in some other form.
I like the idea of reviving badges to pay for "no ad access". I'll probably find it more convenient to not do so, but I am more inclined to do that than I am to install an ad-blocker.

We are being pushed for our dislike of those pop ads from the beginning of the Internet. Now websites are loaded down with ads and scam ads at that.

I bought the ad-free-pass immediately because I had already decided to do so ages ago, as soon I could figure out where that feature was.

Actually, my complaint is that because it looks just like the old pop-up, it took me several pageloads to realize it wasn't just bugged out.

Also maybe it could have used some more positive phrasing like "hey we just unrolled a support system, you can pay some money for ad-free browsing", but I guess that ship has probably sailed by now.

Well, my Kickstarter ad-free ride ended, I got a nag about whitelisting the site, and when I did, I got a reminder of why adblockers exist.

As someone on another site said earlier today, advertising on websites is the delicate balance of harming users' experience enough to monetize their presence but not enough to drive them away.

I have to be frank: I've experienced several force-redirect ads when browsing this site on mobile, which I don't use an adblock on. What is the incentive to permit ads on this site if that's my recurring experience?

So, I'm guessing I ain't the first one to talk about this, but as a mobile user who uses Adblock to keep from being redirected to obvious scam sites, I keep seeing this thing that tells me how many pages I've visited without ads. Is there anything I can do to disable it, or are the mods already working on exactly that?

I sure would like to give the developer who made the adblock notice a stern talking to on the basis that the decision to extend it over has really upset too many people. It should also be noted that because of how many times the browser has been hijacked by a rogue advert is enough to make use of an adblocker on this site a Necessary Evil.

I know you need the money, but when your site has a reputation of malicious ads that never go away despite all attempts to defy it, then there are bigger problems.

Edit: Turns out there is a bug, but it does bring up the matter that is a better ad provider is needed, as someone brought up elsewhere. Some advertisement approval would be nice, and it wouldn’t drive visitors away.

Given the entire reason I got an adblocker in the first place, all those years ago, was due to a forced-redirect ad, with malware that the cheapo AV I was using back then didn't prevent...

Yeah no. Sorry, given the known history of this site's ads? A general rule: the harder a site tries to push against adblock, the more likely you NEED to block its ads for security reasons.

For ublock users, the filter provided by "tundrat" remains functional: https://www.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/comments/9hnfjh/tvtropes_unblock_ads_banner_keeps_appearing_even/?sort=top

I would prefer a system like Know Your Meme, where you only get bugged occasionally, rather than on every page.

I've experienced several force-redirect ads when browsing this site on mobile,
Those redirect ads are violating the agreement that tvtropes.org has made. We have a pinned thread in the FAQ Forum for users to report violations.
