Well, criticism isn't everything.

I have been watching the Fast and Furious franchise, and one thing I noticed about the reviews was that they were very negative for the first three movies, with a persistent complaint about unrealistic plots... but as the series went crazier, the critics suddenly started loving it all. Meanwhile, viewers consistently liked these movies.

That sort of critical turnaround and hypocrisy makes me not take them as seriously.

I don't know if that makes sense. Aside from the fact critics aren't a monolith, the first three Fast and Furious movies took themselves significantly more seriously so the outlandish plots were just laughable. Critics generally started being kinder on the series once the films stopped giving a shit and started wearing the batshit insanity of itself on its sleeve in a very self-aware, audience-winking manner.

Per this article, Warner Bros. replaced original director Terence Nance because they wanted someone with more experience to helm the movie. They gave Malcolm D. Lee only four days to meet the cast and crew, review the VFX department and work, storyboards and animatics, and watch the first film before shooting started.

All of that, in just four days.

WB gonna WB.

There's also an 8-year gap between F&F1 and F&F4, enough time for some turnaround.

Anyone else find it weird how the court for the big game looks like a street court?

Compared to how the first movie had it take place in a stadium.

The audience reactions aren't much better either. It currently has 3.7/10 on IMDb based on 1841 votes. For reference, that's worse than the likes of The Last Airbender, Fifty Shades of Grey, and Catwoman (2004). Granted, those three films have more votes, but things don't seem good for Space Jam 2 if audiences are rejecting it to such an extent.

IMDB audience scores mean nothing because they're easily subject to dipshit reviewbombing, and for some reason I've seen a lot of people really wanting this film to fail. Ultimately, we will see if the movie was successful or not when the box office numbers start rolling in. That's the only tried-and-true test.

[up]x4: Yeah, the IMDB page has been hit with a severe review bombing phase since July 13, to the point the slate had to clean because it was clear majority didn't actually receive early access to the film.

It's stuff like that which forces sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic to timelock reviews until on release.

Regardless of your opinions on certain choices, can we as a people agree that the biggest contribution Space Jam made to modern basketball was getting Jordan ready for his second NBA run? Say what you will about the film and the intensely competitive man, he pretty much buried his attempts at playing baseball and credited the film for getting him into shape to win more titles. For a film that was essentially Character Shilling, that is an intense amount of humility.

Is it really character shilling if he really is the greatest basketball player ever?

Even to a guy who doesn’t do sports like myself, I know he’s an all-star legend.

Space Jam is the only reason I even knew Michael Jordan's name as a kid since sports didn't interest me at all. The Looney Tunes were the main draw for me. I did find some parts of the real Jordan's life interesting in regards to his sports career.

[up][up]It kind of is by design when he's the only one who can save the day and the entire sport of basketball. Chuck Jones utterly despised the film for that reason, because he felt it rendered the Looney Tunes impotent at the altar of His Airness.

It's actually why I find his portrayal as completely incompetent in baseball to be so interesting. The film frames it as something he thought about because his father liked it, and he can't hit the ball even when the opposing team's catcher tells him what ball is coming.

Then again, it isn't like Jordan went unscathed in the movie either.

Don't forget, Jordan only actually scores the winning throw thanks to a power the Tunes make him aware of.
