No, that's why Julian's mom had only prepared two plates, and why Julian was complaining that she was killing him, ie tempting him with food that he can't actually eat, and why she snarks back that he should visit home then.

[up][up][up][up]She's said fucking already, let's hope they add cunt, wanker, bollocks, walloper, shite, twat, numpty, baw, jobby, scrote, nyaff to her list soon.

Preferably all in the same sentence.

Yo this shit’s pretty dope, looking forward to seeing how it goes. [tup] [awesome]

Funny thing about Sinclair, you can tell something was up with him solely by the color of his clothing.

He’s wearing blue but Chase already wears blue & you can’t have too characters dressed in the same color. It doesn’t make any sense.

Sinclair not being getting a robit was spoiled both by the opening and the focus on him when they were talking about how the tests weren't over yet.

At first I thought he was just going to fail and look like an idiot, so I prefer the spy route.

We got a cool action sequence out of it so indeed it was the better option.

[up][up] My assumption is that he'd be a Sacrificial Lamb who gets blown up early on by the inevitable Psycho Rangers. The traitor angle also works, and there's some people theorizing he might end up returning as the disembodied "pilot" of the union Holon shown in the opening.

[up]The only enemy mecha we see that looks a direct match for the Holons is the one unit in the intro that looks ripped from Virtual-ON. I think we’re a while away from an enemy team.

[up] Yes, but that was my first impression based on the opening.

[up]Fair enough assessment, because again, the Union is still rather nebulous through even the episodes critics saw. I’d like to see a speech from one of their leaders in a future episode, just to get some idea of what they want.

I wasn't too interested in this until I watched the opening, at which point I immediately resubscribed my RT first account and watched both episode.

Action is slick as hell and the world design is EPIC. I'm kinda surprised that Jordan's not a super great voice actor though, a lot of his delivery is actually pretty flat. That actually works in the post-injury scenes, emphasizing Chase's misbegotten situation, but he's not any different before it happens.

The Five-Man Band is shaping up to be really entertaining though I don't know who I like the most.

I watched the first two episodes last night. Went in mostly blind, I vaguely knew that Rooster Teeth was making a mecha show but hasn't watched any of the trailers or anything.

It was... alright? I wouldn't call it fantastic, but it kept my interest enough that I'll keep watching as new episodes come out.

The positives: the visual design is decent, a good mix of "futuristic, but not too futuristic". Stuff like holographic tech everywhere but architecture and fashion looking more or less "normal" does a good job of illustrating the 50-years-in-the-future setting. The voice acting is a mixed bag, but Chase and Miranda were both solid, which is good. Most of the dialogue was well written, it generally felt natural rather than "I will now deliver setting exposition" or "Insert witty banter [here]" (even when they were delivering setting exposition or witty banter). The action was okay, I'm glad they actually talk about mission objectives and having mechs get damaged without just exploding into a crater when their HP hits zero.

The negatives: The Ethnic Accent Squad is terrible to the point of being offensive. Miles Luna as Miguel is especially infuriating, given how bad his Hispanic accent is and the fact that it would have been ridiculously easy to find an actual Hispanic person to voice a Hispanic character. The genlock crew is clearly meant to invoke a Multinational Team, but so far it the only evidence of the "multinational" part is hamfisted accents (and the one Japanese guy who doesn't speak English), which is... bleh. The combat scenes have used a bunch of dumb action tropes (plot armor where a spider tank shot is an Instant Death Bullet for mooks but Scratch Damage for named characters, silliness like the slowly-charging EMP blast having an area of effect several miles across but characters insisting on charging it up within line of sight of the enemy), but that's so widespread in action shows that it's hard to blame RT for it specifically.

The wait-and-see: So far the Union has effectively no characterization beyond "the bad guys who are invading the east coast". We don't know where they're coming from, what their power base is, or why they're invading. We've gotten some hints, but nothing concrete, and that needs to change if they're going to be interesting antagonists in the long term. The Polity, for that matter, could use some exposition too. Most pressingly, though, the Union's nanotech needs to have some concrete limits set on what it can and can't do — so far it's been used as raw plothax, doing anything and everything the script needed at the time, which is deeply unsatisfying. This needs to be fixed ASAP — they probably should have done it during episode two (done an Exposition Dump on it to the genlock team newbies, for instance), and if they don't do it in episode three it's just going to become a bigger and more glaring problem.

Ultimately I'd say I'm cautiously optimistic about the show after the first two episodes. There are some problems, but nothing unsurmountable at this point. If they can get the Genlock team some decent characterization beyond their stupid accents and fill in some info on the Union and their nanotech within the next few episodes, then things will shape up pretty nicely. (I have little hope that Miles Luna will stop being terrible, though. Alas.)

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

Miles Luna as Miguel is especially infuriating, given how bad his Hispanic accent is and the fact that it would have been ridiculously easy to find an actual Hispanic person to voice a Hispanic character.

Just going to point out that Miles Luna is an actual Hispanic person, so saying "find an actual Hispanic person" is probably something you want to not say in this context lest you come across as denying a person's ethnicity because they're not x-enough in your opinion. (YMMV on the accent too since I thought it was good, although I thought it was stronger in his first two scenes).

Hispanic by definition refers to anyone with ancestry from a Spanish-speaking country, so being an American Citizen and from Texas has no baring on that (and 40% of the state of Texas is Hispanic or Latino). Miles' father is Hispanic, thus Miles is Hispanic. Incidentally this is why in The Eleven Little Roosters Miles' character is part of the Mexican Assassins.

I'm sorry but I'm laughing hard at the "This character doesn't have the accent I would associate with his ethnicity it's offensive that it's not more stereotypical." take. [lol]

I really do like the multinational team aspect, where the hell else are you going to find a mecha pilot from Iran outside of Mobile Fighter G Gundam?

This show definitely has an All-Star Cast. Michael B Jordan holy shit but also David Tennant and Dakota Fanning! Even Golshifteh Farahani is pretty big deal where she's from. This is all hollywood tier stuff.

Yeah, they certainly got a lot of names for the main cast.

On the accents, did other people have an issue with them? I thought they were good and not hamfisted. I found it amusing that the Scottish David Tennant is playing an Englishman and the English Maisie Williams is playing a Scottswoman.

Huh I just noticed that the Holons have two looks.

At first a blocky look that makes them all palette swaps seen in the episodes, promo, & start of OP & by the poster & end of the OP, smother & sleeker designs where they all look more distinct from each other.

That’s a clear sign of upgrades, question is when’s it gonna happen?
