Sorry to Bother You

Wow. Just got back from watching this in a theater with my wife and a friend. I honestly can't tell if the film is trying to be a sincere critique about race relations in employment, or if the entire joke of the movie is that you think it's going to have a serious theme and then BOOM, there's <item elided due to spoiler tag failing>!

I had a ball watching it, but mainly because there were so many parts where I was laughing because I couldn't tell if they were taking themselves seriously or not.

*ahem*

Hide that part in spoilers!!

But yes, it is a sincere critique of capitalism and exploitation of race, and the climax is part of that metaphor. Seriously, if Amazon could turn laborers into horse-people, you know they would.

Here's a good thread on the movie, and a good article on its depiction of code-switching. And I enjoy this adorable review by critics Kyle Kallgren and Jourdain Searles.

[up][up], [up] is right. I was probably going to wait until it shows up on Netflix or something, but now I'm not sure after reading a certain...thing.

Also, the hyperlink to the movie's page is wrecked. Had to get rid of some "/" and apostrophes that aren't needed.

No.

Why would anyone click on a discussion thread about a movie and expect to not find out the details about that movie?

[up] Because people tend to have discussions before the movie's out based on pre-release materials like trailers and would save spoilers until people either saw the movie or have the means to watch it at home?

At the very least, the OP should've said in advance he'd be spilling spoilers, like in his first post or in the title of the thread...

Because if they haven't watched the movie, they deserve to have an unspoiled experience the way the director intended. There's a spoiler policy precisely for these forums. And hey, sometimes they click by accident. I've done that many times.

I'm really interested to see what Riley does next.

Because if they haven't watched the movie, they deserve to have an unspoiled experience the way the director intended.

Then they can not click on the discussion thread specifically dedicated to the movie they want to be unspoiled for.

Sorry. I actually put in the tag, but for some reason, it was not applying, so I took the more extreme method of eliding it.

In further reflection, I wonder if my reaction to seeing this film isn't the same as seeing Brazil back in the day. Both are very surreal movies which start out with serious commentary and just gradually get wackier and wackier until you find yourself wondering how seriously you're supposed to take the themes.

You're supposed to both find it funny and take it seriously. Like a lot of science fiction, it uses a heightened reality to get across a real point.

I'd give this movie a 9/10—the satire of how corporations treat their employees was spot-on, and most of it was really excellent in terms of comedy, buuut... I understand what the movie was going for with the horse-people, in terms of the dehumanization of workers, but it really took me out of the movie, and I wasn't really feeling the last 20 minutes or so.

they're gonna find intelligent life up there on the moon/and the canterbury tales will shoot up to the top of the best-seller list
