Push for more sales in Japan maybe. Rest of the world doesn't really care about dragon quest. Sure it would make money in Japan but it would be a harder sale than a FE rep as DLC. 2B is someone that is known in the west just as in the east. Plus I doubt that would get people hype for a port anyway, considering the DQ rep in question isn't even in XI, only his title as hero is.
Allegedly they're trying to increase visibility of the series in the west, but it's always been pretty visible over here, and I don't think a significant number of people rushed out to buy Bayonetta once she made it in.
I decided to get Bayonetta after she was in Smash.
There are DOZENS of us, DOZENS!
I would say the internet fireworks show in the fanbase that ensued after the conclusion of the December of 15' Smash Direct probably didn't help since not everyone were happy with her and Corrin, especially after the Smash Ballot created the assumption that longtime fan-favorites would be highly considered.
America you mean, it doesn't do all that badly in Europe and Asia.
And Dragon Quest has a long history with Nintendo, it's not an odd Choice.
Characters are released as they are completed. So if Erdrick is the closest to completion after Joker, it's still going to be him.
All hints point to Erdrick, especially with stuff like the new figurine he's getting which refers to the hero as Yusha, meaning Brave.
Sure we don't know anything officially, but this all can't be a coincidence.
You are exaggerating, since it's actually comparably easier than FF. They're dealing with less people. Three to be exact.
And Toriyama & Yuji Horii aren't hard to work with. Plus they aren't the right holder some have issues with.

I mean, strictly speaking, yes, it can all be a coincidence, in no small part because "Yuusha" can refer to several different characters in video gaming history and not just Erdrick/Loto or their descendants. It also could have been a deliberate ploy by Nintendo to see if they could catch a leaker/dataminer (for what reason, I couldn't say; I just won't completely dismiss the possibility).
Granted, I still lean towards Erdrick/Loto getting in (with a less-but-still-non-zero chance of it being a different DQ rep), but it's important to not dismiss the chance that apophenia is setting in here.
As for the release schedule... I mean, it's quite likely that they are going to release the characters in order of them being ready, but it's probably worth noting that, with what's been said, it's strongly suggested that they had the list of five chosen before any work was done, so the Smash team probably had their pick as to which order to work on the DLC characters. There may be meaning behind the reveals/releases after all. Of course, the meaning could simply be "it was easier/more fun to work on X character first."
Still, I know it hasn't been that long, but I am starting to get a bit hyped over what the next reveal will be. And when - I wouldn't be surprised if they deliberately held off to give Piranha Plant its own time to shine, but that still has me wondering if we're about to get more word, either on Joker or the next DLC character, in a few weeks.
Random thought for the day: What if 'Brave' is actually Razz from Psycho Nauts? Or whatever the main Character's name is?
Considering we're getting a new Direct tomorrow, we'll finally see who they are, but what if?
A western cult classic that didn't sell well anywhere and was never on a Nintendo console?
Razputin Aquato would be cool, he has a new game coming out next year, as well as rhombus of ruin coming out last year and it could possibly be ported to switch somehow, so it's not a stretch. Also I don't think "brave" is Raz. Isn't brave the same size as link? Raz would be about the size of ness or villager, but raz does have alot of projectiles, and he would be heavy on the ground and light in the air do to his psychic powers and whatnot. Also, psychonauts could possibly get a remaster on the switch much like on psn, xbla, and steam. Also Tim Schafer has not ruled out psychonauts 2 being on the switch, who knows? It's a far, far FAR stretch for sure, but if mr.g&w, a freakin' nes accessory, solid snake, joker and a fucking plant can make it in, almost any video game character is on the table. but at the same time raz has about a 20% chance of making it in, also doesn't help that psychonauts was never released in the land of the rising sun (despite the fact that the dev team added an extra finger to raz's model in order to not draw references to the yakuza or meat processing plants.) and was a flop everywhere else, but it got Vindicated by History in the early 2010's.
Also, as long as we're at it Eddie from brutal legend would make a good mii costume/assist trophy, somewhat acting as a replacement for barbara the bat in brawl, but with alot more axe swings, would serve as a fantastic excuse to get a few tenacious D songs in there as well. god and just imagine the possibility for psychonauts stages, assist trophies and spirits. but i'm getting too ahead of myself.
If Erdrick gets added as DLC but Dragon Quest sales don't really change, then perhaps Square needs to drop future attempts at making DQ a name in the West. If after all these years and even Smash can't improve its standing outside of Japan, then its never going to happen.
And Erdrick should be added for DQ's gaming history and importance, not just another attempt to win the West over.
Erdrick: Be a Marth, not a Corrin.
I don't even get that side of the argument for him. He has no other important appearances in the newer games that could really advertise something like DQXI, so it wouldn't really work out to do that using him specifically. Plus I doubt the west would pick up on the series like FE just due to the circumstance of how FE got popular overseas. There's just too much of a hurdle to cross compared to how FE slowly did it over the course of YEARS and DLC isn't really going to help DQ's case.
Plus in my own opinion, making a really Japan only liked character DLC is just an impractical move, considering you have to try and sell the DLC itself to a western audience who doesn't really care for the series in general. If he was in the base game, sure no problem, after all we had Ridley in the base game and only the west cared about him (though granted the west is far bigger than Japan, of course).
And on a third note, if we DID get a DQ rep, Slime would make much more sense in terms of marketing + greater moveset potential.
If they REALLY wanted to promote Dragon Quest that much, just make a bundle with it and the next Final Fantasy game to come out.
Then have that bundle release like a week before the individual releases.
Erdrick is in Dragon Quest XI, actually. And the whole game is a stealth prequel to III.
I mean, push comes to shove, the important question isn't whether or not Erdrick/Loto (or, for that matter, a Slime) getting into Smash would improve Dragon Quest sales around the world. The two questions that are important are a) does Square Enix even care (honestly, given how they've mostly handed off international release of the series to Nintendo for the remakes, I kinda suspect they don't), and b) if they do, do they think it would improve the sales.
Putting aside the wisdom of SE's management (of which I have little faith at the moment, to be honest), I think those are the ones worth asking regarding DQ in Smash.
I'm still honestly having more fun going through Bandai Namco's stable and trying to figure out who'd they pick from there. Taizo Hori, Yuri Lowell, Cress Albane, The Prince of All Cosmos, Kite (normal or Azure Flame version), Sanger Zonvolt, and an outside chance of Klonoa all strike me as reasonable choices, and there's about a dozen more I could easily be convinced of.
That said, I'm honestly hoping that NIS decides to get on board and Laharl gets added. I've said this before, but he'd be so much fun. Also, watching him go full Large Ham in both the announcement trailer (which should feature him deciding to go head-to-head against K. Rool, Bowser, Ganondorf, and Ridley all at once) and gameplay would be a treat.
If a Dark Souls character were to get in should it be the Chosen Undead, Solaire or Artorias?
None of the above. If I have to pick one, Solaire. He's more widely known and has a set look.
Rick taylor from splatterhouse would also be fantastic in smash

Oh, yeah, Bandai Namco owns Splatterhouse now. That said, if you thought they had to tone down Bayo to get her in Smash...
Looking over their creator page, I could also throw in Nightmare, Heihachi Mishima, and Haruka Amami (requisite "off the wall" inclusion).
Also, in terms of "testing the waters in terms of the 'video game first' rule," we can also note that Bandai Namco are the owners of the Digimon franchise (though that started with virtual pets, then the manga/anime, then the games). And it wouldn't completely surprise me if Bandai Namco wanted to finally set up a Digimon vs. Pokemon fight to please fans (and provoke endless arguments) who have wanted a crossover fight between them for over a decade. So technically a very outside chance, but I'd throw Agumon (or one of its digivolutions) as a possibility.
do virtual pets like tamagotchi count as "coming from a video game" if so then we could easily see it happen
Even though he comes from the accursed EA, I wouldn't mind if TY the Tasmanian Tiger appeared in a Smash Bros game.
Should the future DLC be nothing but 3rd party like it almost was in Smash 4?
I'm not opposed to it but I would slightly disappointed.
Really don't know, we just inply based on how Nintendo themselves seem to be doing with the DLC. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if we get more D La C after the 5 pack is done seeing as how monumental this game sold.
I don't think the datamined character codenamed "brave" is going to be Erdrick, from what I've seen of the datamined stats. For those saying that Erdrick effectively has to be the next character because "it all lines up" or because of external circumstances, please keep in mind the Grinch leak and how people thought everything lined up for that only to be struck with disappointment, as well as Joker's inclusion in the game despite Persona 5 having no Nintendo-related news beforehand. For all we know, brave has just as much a chance of being Tingle as they do Erdrick. I know speculating's fun and all and that's fine, but don't let yourself think it's a done deal and that brave absolutely will be Erdrick, because then you're gonna set yourself up to be disappointed...
I'm hoping the Square rep is Geno so I'm on cruise control to disappointment.
