Tired of having to resort to a thread barely anyone's using.

I don't know much about Foxx's work. The last thing I saw him in was The Amazing Spiderman 2 and it was... not exactly something to write home about.

Foxx can deliver some pretty damn good performances, when the material is good.

There's a reason he's one of a handful of people ever nominated for two acting Oscars in the same year.

His most recent best work was probably Baby Driver.

My bigger concern is Todd Mc Farlane directing (And writing the screenplay). The man has no directing experience beyond music videos. And he's also... not that great as a writer. Sure, it's cool to have Spawn's creator at the head, but I do worry.

I'd have rather seen a continuation of the Spawn Animated Series, but alas.

And he's also... not that great as a writer. Sure, it's cool to have Spawn's creator at the head, but I do worry

I can't tell if this implies that Mc Farlane is a bad writer or that Spawn is poorly-written.

Spawn, like any comic, has ups and downs. I don't consider it all that good, but it's more personal taste than anything.

I find Mc Farlane to be more of an ideas guy than a good writer. He comes up with interesting concepts and premises, but I find his ability to execute those to be severely meh.

He's great with ideas, but putting those ideas into a coherent narrative has always been a problem. It's one of the reasons why the TV show is usually considered the best iteration of Spawn. It takes the best ideas from the comic but applies them to actual nuanced and legible storytelling.

Thought the series also gave us those Vignettes of McFarlane trying to wax philosophical and sound edgy.... And those are so bad. Half the time he's spouting platitudes or veering straight in gothic Ice-Cream Koan

[up]It always came off to me as a TV-MA version of Gargoyles. Look at cartoon Jason Wynn and try not to be immediately reminded of Xanatos. That’s a good thing BTW.

I’m not going to say anything about this till we see a trailer. There’s been way too many stop/start pushes for Spawn projects that go nowhere.

[up] Beyond a degree of physical similarities and that both are rich businessmen, there's not that much in common. Xanatos is a genius and master planner. Wynn never really was that clever.

I actually wonder if we'll see a redesign of Spawn.

It's no secret that both Spawn and Venom were designed by McFarlane and share a lot of similarity visually (Black, organic and symbiotic costume with white details. White eyes of similar shape, white chest markings)

With the Venom movie coming out, I wonder if the Spawn movie might re-interpret spawn to avoid him looking too close to Sony's Venom. Perhaps doing like the first movie where he spends most of the movie without his mask on.

[up]Maybe some early Spawn, but most modern depictions have Brilliant green eyes for Spawn, creating a better contrast with the brighter colors on pages/screen, such as the white and light yellow of Lightning, explosions, and gunfire. The newer symbiote patterns with white on the suit and face also make that a must. In any case, the cape has always been the most significant design difference.

Even old Spawn has the green eyes. But nonetheless, even McFarlane has mentioned Spawn's design draws from that of Venom. And while yes Spawn has the cloak, one still doesn't want to end up with just "Venom with a cloak". So it'll be interesting how they realize that design.

[up][up][up]Todd pretty much confirmed Spawn will be redesigned to some degree.

Does Spawn have a dark mask and his body dark and then does he have a cape in the comic books? Yes, yes, yes. Will he have all of that in the movie? Yes, yes, yes. So it's not like I'm going to give him wings instead of a cape and I'm not going to give him no mask instead of a mask. There's no going to be any of that. It just won't be exactly what a hardcore fan is used to.

But I’m hoping that people who just go and are familiar with Spawn will say, ‘Yeah, it’s in the box.’ And people who know nothing about Spawn will go, ‘Wow, that’s cool.’ And I have to design for filmgoers not for comic book fans because the filmgoers are going to be bigger than the pool of the comic book fans.”

[up]Heh, Called it I guess.

Not surprised. Like I said, they'd not want to look too similar to Venom. Especially if Venom bombs coz no one will want to see "Venom, but with a cape".

So, do you think this will be a regular or demon/angel plot? Which would you prefer.

Please.

[up]IIRC, the idea was to follow the two human detectives Sam and Twitch and their observing of Spawn, trying to piece together what he is and why he’s going after Wynn and his associates.

So Spawn will be about two characters who aren't Spawn.

Fund it!

[up]Well, if you're going for a horror movie approach, and the titular Spawn is the monster, then you don't want to see things from the perspective of the monster, because it dilutes the impact when it shows up. The monster is the star of the film, but it's not the POV character.

I'm spitballing here, because it is a unique idea, but also REALLY easy to mess up if the focus isn't on Spawn as a monster. No one wants a repeat of the 96 film.

To be fair, they sold an entire line on that premise.

Well, Mad Max Fury Road pulled off a non protagonist focused plot, so maybe Spawn can pull.it off too.

I still got my doubts. Todd McFarlane is also allegedly writing the screenplay. And while he's a inexperienced director, he's kind of a shitty writer. There's a reason the man had to have people like Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman come and write for him (and heck, Gaiman is the one who created Cogliostro).
