Oh yeah, and we'll be hearing more info at the CrunchyRoll Expo this coming Saturday.

Is it okay if we keep the fact that Crunchyroll is poorly using its money and the controversy surrounding the creators out of this thread? If we don't, I just see this turning into a hate sink.

But... but... they are still using Flash for their video player!

[up][up] I don’t even understand the controversy surrounding this.

All I know is Crunchyroll is making a show, it’s reveal article’s comment section is a literal cesspool full of very racially charged language where every comment that is not a profane rant downvoted to Hell, & there’s a bunch of You Tube videos criticizing it too.

What the actual fuck is going on?

[up]x4 - At least the HTML 5 player is getting a full rollout in September.

Nothing else to say till the panel, although yeah, the initial reaction is not a positive one.

I don’t even understand the controversy surrounding this.

@ slimcoder: I think I have some idea, but I'm worried that mentioning it here could still turn this thread into a hate sink.

I'll private message you.

@ ParaChomp: Could I possibly get PM'd too? So I can actually state my idea to someone?

One thing I do feel safe saying on this thread is how I'm intrigued that one of the four leads (Parsley?) looks way taller than the other three. I wonder if anything comes of it...

All I've seen is a still image of the main cast, but that's through You Tube where it's often attached to negatively charged videos. The show looks rather innocent for all the hate it's gathering, but I know literally nothing else about it.

I'm in the same boat as slimcoder and don't know what the hell is going on outside of people being mad at Crunchyroll in general for some reason (and that's putting it lightly). So I am also asking for a PM explaining why this is happening, because the show is on the fast track to gaining notoriety solely for its backlash and nothing else (which would make it hard to keep a thread on it here if we can't keep it in check).

Eh, please copy-paste me a PM as well, if it's possible. I haven't really been following this controversy so far, and it seems like it will be something to keep an eye on.

You know what?

Maybe we should just have it posted here. Both to satisfy the curiosity (and explain to folks lurking or otherwise don't want to PM) and because eventually somebody's going to roll in just talking the controversy anyway, and it's better than having one troper PM a bunch of other people just to explain the same thing. Especially since right now the controversy seems to be the most noteworthy thing about (you know, instead of the fact that a bunch of talented folks are making their own anime/anime-esque show, only to have it Overshadowed by Controversy almost immediately)...

We should capable of being civil enough to carry on the conversation without it degenerating into something worth locking the thread for. And if the problem is specifically about people's opinion on Crunchyroll as a platform and service and not the show itself, then that needs to be taken somewhere other than this thread, which is about the show.

That said, given how hush-hush everyone is being, maybe we should have a mod weigh in on this, assuming any of them know what's going on. I'm more interested in learning and seeing discussion about the show anyhow.

Remember to be careful not to turn this thread into a complaint thread. That's against forum rules, and the mods won't hesitate to put their feet down if they feel like people are being too negative and not contributing anything constructive.

[up]So in other words, anything related to the staff and/or any potential message they may be conveying is basically off limits. Well, that really narrows the conversation material down, doesn't it?

Serious mode, though, aside from the premise of 'four girls go to school to gain employment as magical defenders' and the animation style which several people have compared to CalArts works like Steven Universe, we don't know jack. Allegedly there was a webcomic and a Newgrounds video tangentially related to the show, but aside from that what is there to discuss?

I can agree that pushing the 'diversity' of the staff in lieu of showing detail on the series itself, like animation or voice directing, was quite harmful to the embryo that is the show's reputation.

[up] You mean "art style", or "character design", not "animation style". They haven't released any animation. Also I take issue with calling Steven Universe a CalArts work. The creator isn't even from there.

I'm not sure how I feel about the character designs myself, but the background art lines looked good. I like the Simon & Garfunkel theme-naming of the four leads.

Y’know this is PROBABLY going to unintentionally turn into a complaint thread since it relates to the controversy over the show, but I somewhat question the whole complaint people give this show for not actually being an anime.

On one hand, yeah I agree, that Crunchyroll’s purpose is to be THE biggest platform for legally streaming anime outside of Japan and using portions of the subscriber money to fund this animesque non-anime does not fit its buisiness motto. But on the other hand there have been plenty of good fauxnime that anime fans often consider as anime like Avatar, Wakfu, Code Lyoko Castlevania and Voltron Legendary Defenders. Hell it would almost be hypocritical at times if said people complain about how this show is not anime because its western production yet unironically view Teen Titans as their favorite anime (even though it is based on an AMERICAN comic made by AMERICANS for an AMERICAN comapany IN AMERICA).

[up]In roughly 95% of cases you would be right. If this show was on Hulu, and people complained, it’d be just weird. “So what, a show is on you don’t like. Ignore it.”

I think the problem is the equivalence between Crunchyroll launching an originals service, and the first thing out the gate not being an anime, and from a person who had allegedly said unkind things about the medium in the past. Whether accurate or not, the feeling is that their subscription money is going to support this project when it could go to other things.

And that’s the most I’m going to say on the matter. Anything else would be excessive complaining, but I believe the show is a victim of circumstance.

[up]The staff apparently purged their social media accounts so I put an “allegedly” on there. It’s pretty much a dead end from there though so I’m gonna drop it.

Has anyone here seen the original webcomic? I haven’t which is why I’m asking.
