So, clarification...

Sabrina originally started as a comic in the same universe as the Archie comics.

Riverdale is an adaptation of the Archie comics.

However, since Sabrina is being done by Netflix and Riverdale is on the CW, not to mention that Riverdale is released on a weekly schedule compared to Netflix's binge drop, I doubt they'll crossover.

Okay, yes, in the comics, Sabrina is a spin-off of Archie. But the show Riverdale hasn't included anyone from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, so it should not be considered a spin-off.

Plus, CAOS is about magic and witches and demons, while Riverdale, for all it's soap opera antics, is still relatively realistic. It would be like, I don't know, saying Mork & Mindy was a spin-off of Happy Days.

[up]From that same trope page:

This 1978–82 Fantastic Comedy series on ABC, created by Garry Marshall and spun off from an episode of Happy Days

But even ignoring that, that sounds like a spin-off to me. There's no requirement of having or crossing characters between shows to be considered a spin-off that I'm aware of. You're spun-off if you come from the same universe or concept. The term can be applied loosely.

The Sabrina comics, at least this particular version of Sabrina, are a spun-off from the Archie comics. The show, while not taking place in the exact same universe, can still technically a spin-off of Riverdale in the same way that Count Duckula, Caprica, and Victorious are spin-offs of Dangermouse, Battlestar Galactica, and i'Carly respectively.

I don't expect this show to have any real connection to Riverdale, except for maybe mentioning that Riverdale is a place that exists.

In the Chilling Adventures comics, Betty and Veronica did make an experience but they were explicitly witches and not really supposed to be mainstream, regular B and V.

So I imagine people who have never seen Riverdale could watch this show and not lose a step and vice-versa.

This being connected to that world despite it being so different is exactly why I wanted it to be in the same verse. [lol] It's so batshit insane that it would sell me on it. Especially if they crossed over.

I never expected this show to be in the same world as Riverdale. Unlike the CW DC shows, that's to much genre overlap for any shared universe attempt to be believable to the casual audience.

[up][up] You might want to edit that link, right now its set up to start 14 seconds in and not at the beginning.

I agree that a crossover with Riverdale might be a bit more than the shows could bear. Especially since this show is already doing a careful balancing act in regards to tone.

But Michelle Gomez was in this trailer, so i'm more than psyched.

I'm debating being that annoying person who watches the whole first season the day it comes out and then giving my thoughts on the episodes somewhere, probably here.

The connection with Riverdale that the trailer advertises is that it's by the same Executive Producers. Which is basically meaningless, because Executive Producer is a fancy title for people the film or show couldn't exist without (financial backers, typically) but who don't have any real creative control or storytelling involvement with the product.

So, no, it's definitely not a spinoff of Riverdale. Still looks pretty cool, all the same.

That's misleading in general, and wrong in this specific case.

Riverdale and Chilling share a number of Eps-Berlanti, Schetcher, Goldwater. Now these three most likely have no real input.

However, both shows share another EP, who is the actual creator-Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. This is the guy who matters in this case. He's chief creative officer of Archie comics, and writes Afterlife with Archie and the Chilling Adventures comic.

Since he's the showrunner of both Riverdale and Chilling Adventures, he has much more input than the typical EP. He also writes episodes and no doubt has say over other episodes not written by himself.

Eps who are just Eps generally aren't responsible for creative decisions. But often people wear multiple hats.

The Stars of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Discuss the Show's Feminist Ideals

This is totally the Sabrina for 2018, in so many ways. She’s a woke witch,” said Kiernan Shipka, who plays Sabrina in the upcoming show. “Her entire grappling with signing her name away in the Book of the Beast and questioning a lot of the more patriarchal elements of what she was raised to believe and to go into. I think that in and of itself is very feminist and she’s a strong independent woman and she stands up for herself and she does what she thinks is right.”

Lachlan Watson, who plays Susie, a friend of Sabrina’s, echoed those thoughts, and related them in particular to their own identity. Watson is non-binary, and said that their character is well, and that a lot of personal intent went into translating that experience into the show.

“Susie provides a side of feminism that really represents that you really don’t have to be female to be a feminist. It really encompasses all minorities and all misunderstood people, or gender inequality as a whole, I think,” they said. “Throughout Susie’s sort of queer journey — specifically a bit of a genderqueer journey — which really speaks to me, it’s having that group of incredible feminists behind their back.”

It’s a thematic fit for the show in more ways than one. Witchiness—with its roots as a social category in the transgression and oppression of women—has long been an ideal claimed and toyed with by the LGBT+ community. A show about witches should be a feminist show, and it should be a broadly representative one, too.

I'm curious to see if they'll have Alexandra Cabot from Josie's series and her cat Sebastian as rival witches/warlocks to Sabrina and Salem.

[up] Yep. Sebastian is the reincarnation of Sebastian Cabot, a witchcraft-practicing ancestor of the Cabot family. By holding Sebastian in her arms, Alexandra could cast powerful magic spells. Alexandra was later shown to be able to cast spells on her own.

Apparently they've met Sabrina at least once.

Having finished the first episode, I can say this is very much a Aguirre-Sacasa show.

I like it so far, though I can definitely see it rubbing people wrong whose only experience with the characters is the 90s show.

On the second episode and this show has provided me with exactly what it promised when they said Michelle Gomez was going to play a character named Madame Satan so I'm very happy with it so far.

Shipka really shines here as the show's core and manages to anchor the show as the boundary between the mystic and material.

Also I haven't watched Riverdale yet but I don't think it's ever gonna provide anything as entertaining as the DARK BAPTISM which I honestly cannot take seriously despite their best efforts.

I don't know if the show realizes its message is as massively muddled as it is or not.

Which makes it both entertaining and not because of it.

I finished this yesterday. Definitely better than Riverdale season two but I think Riverdale season one beat this. Wasn't too fond of episodes 5, 8, and 9 but the rest of it was good.

For anyone else that finished it, was anyone else upset when Sabrina caved and signed the book after all? After she won the trial I was hoping she'd continue to find a way around that.

I'll admit I laughed at Sabrina's "make the jocks make out with each other" revenge thing more than I should have.

I also snarked "the only difference between this and their usual behavior is none of them said No Homo during the whole thing".
